One of the main tasks solved in planning short-term and managing operational modes of electric power systems (EPS) is the optimization of their network modes on the adjustable parameters. For modern complex EPS, this task is often characterized by the multi-extremality of the objective function, the appearance of discontinuous functions, the presence of initial information of a probabilistic and partially uncertain nature. In such conditions, solving the problem by traditional algorithms using mainly linear and nonlinear programming methods, Lagrange, gradient, etc., is associated with a number of difficulties in simplifying them and bringing them to a convenient form for calculations. …

Cadmium silicon phosphide (CdSiP2) is a nonlinear optical material widely used in optical parametric oscillators. Intrinsic defects (vacancies and antisites) are responsible for unwanted broad optical absorption bands in these crystals that degrade the performance of the devices. In the present work, optical absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra are acquired (at room temperature and 12 K, respectively) from a neutron-irradiated CdSiP2 crystal. After the irradiation, the crystal is highly absorbing from the band edge near 600 nm to beyond 1.3 μm because of overlapping defect-related absorption bands. Heating to 550 °C removes nearly all the …

Insights From A Simple Mathematical Model Of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
This preliminary report explores insights about mechanisms of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) gained from a mathematical model of interconnected clusters of excitatory neurons. This local, integrate-and-fire, spiking neural network is subjected to random noise from other populations of excitatory and inhibitory neurons outside the network. Its emergent behavior in response to different ratios of inhibitory to excitatory noise mimics several aspects of ASDs. The spiking neural network functions according to rules of classical neurophysiology, involving resting membrane potential, threshold potential, excitatory or inhibitory post-synaptic potentials, action potential, and refractory period. Key parameters include the incremental change in membrane potential, p …

Manufacturing Of Origami-Inspired Mechanisms Via Sheet Lamination, Tyler R. Stevens
Theses and Dissertations
Origami-inspired mechanisms combine compact, lightweight, reconfig- urable devices, yet despite decades of growth in origami theory, industrial uptake remains limited. As a result, origami predominately appears as prototypes or in low-volume, bespoke applications. Manufacturing (which has received little development) remains the chief bottleneck: most origami fabrication routes are still under-explored, labor-intensive, and fundamentally unsuited to scale. This dissertation addresses that barrier by establishing a process-centric framework for origami manufacturing and demonstrates fabrication workflows capable of transitioning designs from prototypes to production. A survey of more than 180 publications on origami manufacturing approaches yields a manufacturing-oriented taxonomy that links each surrogate …
