An Integrated Pcb-Based Heating And Auto-Ranging Platform For Volatile Organic Compound (Voc) Detection Using Carbon Nanotube Based Sensors, Thomas Kalach
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents the development, characterization, and integration of a novel low-cost, high-dynamic-range sensor platform for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), leveraging the unique electrical properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) thin films. The platform introduces a fully integrated auto-ranging analog front-end circuit capable of real-time resistance measurement spanning over eight orders of magnitude ranging from tens of ohms to hundreds of megaohms, without compromising signal resolution or precision. This was achieved through a digitally controlled, multi-path feedback architecture and controllable current source.
To further enhance sensor performance, the system incorporates a copper trace heater beneath the sensor array, …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
The escalating pressure on water resources in agricultural regions has become a catalyst for water conflicts. The adoption of innovative approaches to estimate actual evapotranspiration (ETa) offers potential solutions to mitigate conflicts related to water usage. This research presents the application of a remote sensing-based methodology for estimating actual evapotranspiration (ETa) based on a two-source energy balance model (TSEB) for riparian vegetation in Nebraska, US using the Spatial EvapoTranspiration Modeling Interface (SETMI). Estimated results through SETMI and field data using the eddy covariance system (EC) considering the period 2008–2013 were used to validate the energy balance components and ETa. Modeled …

Calving icebergs at tidewater glaciers release large amounts of potential energy. This energy—in principle—could be a source for submarine melting, which scales with near‐terminus water temperature and velocity. Because near‐terminus currents are challenging to observe or predict, submarine melt remains a key uncertainty in projecting tidewater glacier retreat and sea level rise. Here, we study one submarine calving event at Xeitl Sít’ (LeConte Glacier), Alaska, to explore the effect of calving on ice melt, using a suite of autonomously deployed instruments beneath, around, and downstream of the calving iceberg. Our measurements captured flows exceeding 5 m/s and demonstrate how potential …

Empirical Methods For Support System Design In Deep Serpentinite Excavations: A Critical Evaluation, Anas Driouch, Redouane Oubah, Abdelaziz Lahmili, Latifa Ouadif
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Underground mining excavations in fragile serpentinite rock masses represent a significant challenge today. The complicated features of these rock formations, especially at great depths, make it difficult to classify them using commonly employed methods. This paper focuses on the application of empirical methods for the classification of serpentinite rock masses and the design of support systems in underground mining excavations. Specifically, it concerns an access tunnel excavated entirely in serpentinite at a depth of 460 m. Geomechanical classification systems indicate that the Tunnelling Quality Index (Q-system) and Rock Mass Rating (RMR) evaluate serpentinites as rock masses of exceptionally poor to …

Streamflow forecasting in snowmelt-dominated basins is essential for water resource planning, flood mitigation, and ecological sustainability. This study presents a comparative evaluation of statistical, machine learning (Random Forest), and deep learning models (Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), and Spatio-Temporal Graph Neural Network (STGNN)) using 30 years of data from 20 monitoring stations across the Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB). We assess the impact of integrating meteorological variables—particularly, the Snow Water Equivalent (SWE)—and spatial dependencies on predictive performance. Among all models, the Spatio-Temporal Graph Neural Network (STGNN) achieved the highest accuracy, with a Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) of 0.84 …

Chplx: The Hpx Solution For Bridging Chapel And C++, Shreyas Swanand Atre
LSU Master's Theses
Historically, domain scientists faced steep learning curves due to low-level programming models and fragmented tooling. Between 2003 and 2008, Cray, now part of HPE, introduced the Chapel language as part of DARPA’s High Productivity Computing Systems (HPCS) program. Today, Chapel remains under active development and is used across research and production projects. In parallel, the STE||AR Group has advanced C++-based parallel programming through HPX, a standards-conforming runtime that provides lightweight tasking, futures, and distributed execution while abstracting much of the algorithmic “heavy lifting.” Yet for many domain scientists, C++ presents a steeper learning curve than Chapel. To close this complexity …

The current approaches for crash frequency and severity prediction in the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) do not employ vehicle mix information. In this research effort, we build advanced alternatives to HSM methods while incorporating vehicle mix information. Two model systems—(a) multivariate Poisson-lognormal model and (b) negative binomial-ordered probit fractional split model—are estimated by incorporating vehicle mix variables. The developed model systems can also capture the influence of observed and unobserved heterogeneity of different independent variables including vehicle mix variables. We estimate the models for three facility types including Urban Arterial 4-Lane Divided segments, Rural 3-Leg STOP-Controlled and Rural 4-Leg STOP-Controlled …

Resilience Oriented Distribution System Service Restoration Considering Overhead Power Lines Affected By Hurricanes, Kehkashan Fatima, Hussain Shareef, Flavio Costa
Michigan Tech Publications
In recent years, there has been an increase in the frequency of severe weather events (like hurricanes). These events are responsible for most power outages in power distribution systems (PDSs). Particularly susceptible to storms are overhead PDSs. In this study, the dynamic Bayesian network (DBN)-based failure model was developed for different hurricane scenarios to predict the line failure of overhead lines. Based on the outcomes of the DBN model, a service restoration model was formulated to maximize restored loads and minimize power losses using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)-based distributed generation (DG) integration and system reconfiguration. Three different case studies based …

The ability to electrochemically separate individual species in a pyrochemical reprocessing salt relies on first being able to detect a separation in their reaction potentials. This requires the ability to measure reaction potentials with extreme precision. In this work, we introduce a novel technique called serial open circuit potentiometry (SOCP) and demonstrate its effectiveness at precisely measuring metal deposition reaction potentials. SOCP has several advantages over traditional open circuit potentiometry, including its abilities to quantify the error of measured equilibrium potentials by averaging many individual OCP measurements, determine overpotential deposition nucleation potentials to instrument precision, and simultaneously determine the nucleation …

4th International Workshop on Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs
GEI worked with a Colorado district to design and construct a labyrinth spillway at a high-altitude reservoir west of Denver. The labyrinth spillway increased the reservoir normal water surface elevation 10 feet, increasing reservoir storage capacity by 120 acre-feet. This additional storage was achieved with the labyrinth with minimal modification to the existing embankment dam. The site presented challenges including significant ice loading on the weir structure, complex rock conditions requiring seepage control measures, and unique construction techniques.
A labyrinth weir configuration was chosen to increase discharge capacity with minimal adjustment to the existing spillway footprint and to pass the …

The Nachtigal Dam, part of the Nachtigal Amont Hydropower Project in Cameroon, features a 4917-meter-long labyrinth spillway, designed to safely manage floodwaters. This spillway was optimized for hydraulic safety, cost efficiency, and environmental considerations. Physical scale modeling (at a relatively rare 1:12.5 scale) and detailed design adjustments ensured robust performance under various flow conditions. Despite construction challenges for such a large-scale nonlinear structure, the project achieved reliable spillway operations, demonstrating the suitability of labyrinth weirs for large-scale hydraulic infrastructure.

Lessons Learned From The Hydraulic Design Of The Prado Dam Labyrinth Spillway, Yajayra Diaz, Mike Phillips, Brian M. Crookston, Julie D. Allen
4th International Workshop on Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has completed the design of a new labyrinth weir spillway at Prado Dam, in southern California. The proposed labyrinth weir would consist of an arced configuration, 7-cycles, with varying weir wall height from 28 ft to 41 ft with upstream head over the weir cycles of up to 30 ft. This paper highlights the key lessons learned from the hydraulic design of the new labyrinth weir, including significant fluctuating negative pressures at the weir wall resulting in hydrodynamic loads that should be considered during structural design and submergence of the weir at high heads.

The creation of virtual humans increasingly leverages automated synthesis of speech and gestures, enabling expressive, adaptable agents that effectively engage users. However, the independent development of voice and gesture generation technologies, alongside the growing popularity of virtual reality (VR), presents significant questions about the integration of these signals and their ability to convey emotional detail in immersive environments. In this paper, we evaluate the influence of real and synthetic gestures and speech, alongside varying levels of immersion (VR vs. 2D displays) and emotional contexts (positive, neutral, negative) on user perceptions. We investigate how immersion affects the perceived match between gestures …

Key Width Ratio Influence On Discharge Coefficients Of Trapezoidal Piano Key Weirs Via Openfoam Simulations, Lisa Lüddecke, Mario Oertel
4th International Workshop on Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs
Piano key weirs are characterized by complex three-dimensional flow structures with multiple parameters describing their geometry. The variation of these parameters can affect several flow characteristics such as efficiency, energy dissipation and air entrainment. Identifying the optimal geometry for enhanced hydraulic performance represents a significant challenge. Physical or numerical modeling of multiple geometric variants is necessary to identify the relevant optimal parameters. The key width ratio (between an inlet and an outlet key) represents one of the parameters that influences the hydraulic behavior of the piano key weir. In particular, it affects the discharge coefficient, which in turn affects the …
