Interaction-Sensitive Tree-Based Statistical Models, Xiaotong Sun
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation introduces a tree-based framework to improve the interpretability and modeling of interaction effects among variables, essential in fields like biostatistics, healthcare, science and engineering. Traditional regression methods often fail to clearly capture complex interactions, while tree-based approaches, despite their interpretability, face performance limitations and overfitting concerns. Our proposed interaction-sensitive tree-based method, designed for seamless integration, combines various statistical techniques tailored to different data types, leveraging ensemble learning methods to enhance accuracy and mitigate overfitting. We present methods for regression, survival analysis, and classification, validated with case studies and benchmarked against traditional models using metrics like BIC and R-squared. …

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) hold potential for low-cost, high-efficiency solar energy, but their sensitivity to moisture limits practical application. Current fabrication requires controlled environments, limiting mass production. Researchers aim to develop stable PSCs with longer lifetimes under ambient conditions. In this research work, we investigated the stability of perovskite films and solar cells fabricated and annealed in natural air using four different anti-solvents: toluene, ethyl acetate, diethyl ether, and chlorobenzene. Films (about 300 nm thick) were deposited via single-step spin-coating and subjected to ambient air-atmosphere for up to 30 days. We monitored changes in crystallinity, electrical properties, and optics over …

Evaluation Of 3d Beach Profiles: A New Method For Monitoring Changes In Beach Morphology And Grain Size, Kalinda Ellen Roberts
Graduate Masters Theses
Beach profiles are a simple and affordable approach to monitoring changes in beach morphology. However, traditional methods offer limited resolution and dimension. Recent advancements in technologies, particularly structure-from-motion (SfM) and grain size detection models (GSDMs), can be integrated into conventional beach profiling techniques, enabling more detailed spatial and temporal analysis of slope and grain sizes. This research introduces a new technique for coastal monitoring, termed “3D Beach Profiles,” which integrates SfM technology to create high-resolution three-dimensional digital surface models (DSMs) and orthomosaics of beach surfaces. These digital surfaces enable the extraction of beach slopes with orders of magnitude more data …

Neutrosophic Cox Proportional Hazards Model For Robust Variable Selection In Survival Analysis, Ibrahim Yasser, Aya A. Abd El-Khalek, A. A. Salama, Doaa A. Abdo
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
This paper introduces a novel approach for variable selection in survival analysis by integrating neutrosophic logic into the Cox Proportional Hazards (Cox PH) model to address the limitations of recent studies related to high dimensionality. Neutrosophic logic, is a mathematical framework that allows for uncertainty, indeterminacy, and inconsistency, and particularly well suited for handling the complexity and often-ambiguous nature of biological data. By incorporating neutrosophic sets into the Cox PH model, we aim to enhance model robustness, improve variable selection, and address the curse of dimensionality. We compare the performance of the neutrosophic-enhanced Cox PH model with traditional variable selection …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
The correlation coefficient between two factors is crucial in statistical computation, indicating the extent and evolution of the appropriate link. The precision of applicability evaluations frequently relies on the thoroughness and caliber of data obtained from a certain dataset. Statistical research sometimes entails data marked by intrinsic trade-offs and uncertainty. This study seeks to present m-polar interval-valued neutrosophic soft sets (mPIVNSSs) through the integration of m-polar fuzzy sets with interval-valued neutrosophic soft sets. The suggested mPIVNSS structure is a significantly generalized version of m-polar neutrosophic soft sets and serves as a substantial extension of interval-valued neutrosophic soft sets. In this …

Structural durability is critical for building and civil engineering safety, wherein the arrangement and distribution of reinforcing bar (rebar) is crucial. Improperly aligned rebar impacts bearing capacity, whereas uniform spacing optimally distributes loads, reducing stress. We introduce a computer-vision based Deep Vision Net (DVNet) model for real-time evaluation of rebar placement. A customized dataset is prepared in an environmental setup and augmented to address overfitting issues. This research conducts a comparative analysis of the learning performance exhibited by the proposed DVNet model against several other pre-trained models, such as Mask-RCNN and YOLOv5. The proposed DVNet model is built on a …

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The global deployment of solar photovoltaic and wind power is projected by the International Energy Agency as the primary pathway to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. However, these technologies face a critical bottleneck: their inherently intermittent power generation. For “intermittent renewables” to become the dominant source of electrical energy, efficient energy storage systems are essential. Current storage solutions are not viable on a global scale due to material scarcity, safety concerns, and high capital costs. Among emerging technologies, zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have garnered significant interest. ZABs offer a theoretical energy density five times greater than traditional lithium-ion batteries, utilize safe …

Impacts Of Stream Bed Adjustment On Local Bridge Morphology At Highway 281, Molly G. Likins
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Nebraska sand-bed rivers have long been a part of sediment transport studies and have been used in the development of numerous well-known empirical bedload equations. Some of these studies have shown how adjustments in streambed elevation led to changes in local stream morphology. The sand-bed rivers of Nebraska are highly susceptible to such changes due to their wide, shallow cross-sections and erodibility. The objective of our study is to synthesize a hydrodynamic model with high-resolution field data and improved methods of representing sediment transport to better predict both short and long-term channel adjustments for an aggraded sand-bed river.
The field …

Development And Evaluation Of Highly Thixotropic Uhpc Mixtures For Bridge Overlay Applications, Akbota Aitbayeva
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is an advanced construction material renowned for its exceptional strength and durability. However, conventional UHPC is typically self-consolidating, making it unsuitable for bridge deck overlay applications due to challenges posed by potential surface slopes. UHPC overlay construction requires a highly thixotropic material that not only responds well to vibration but also maintains workability over an extended period and remains stable on sloped surfaces. Despite the complex rheological properties of highly thixotropic UHPC, limited testing methods are available to effectively assess the workability and rheology of overlay mixtures. To address this gap, the present study provides a comprehensive …

Exploring Variably Saturated Flow Formulations For Modflow: Implementing A Fully 3d Richards' Equation In Modflow 6, Sebastian Vazquez-Gasty
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis explores the implementation of a fully 3D Richards’ equation solution into MODFLOW 6 to solve for saturated/unsaturated flow. Currently, MODFLOW 6 has limited capability for solving unsaturated zone flow problems by using the Unsaturated Zone Flow (UZF) package, which neglects capillarity and assumes vertical 1-dimensional flow. Various formulations of the Richards’ equation were first evaluated for their strengths and weaknesses. Various numerical solution approaches to Richards’ equation were also studied to understand the robustness and efficiency of different approaches and to select one that would best fit into the MODFLOW 6 framework. The MODFLOW 6 framework was also …

Improving Thermionic Power Generation Via The Reduction Of Emission Barriers, Chace E. Franey
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis investigates methods to improve the performance of thermionic energy converters (TECs) by reducing the emission barriers. A TEC generates electricity from thermal energy when electrons are emitted from a hot electrode (the emitter) through a vacuum gap and absorbed by a cooler electrode (the collector). Due to their lack of working fluids and inherently compact nature, TECs have garnered attention over the years for their potential as a means of power generation in space or high-grade waste heat recovery. Historically, however, the practical implementation of TECs has been hindered by significant technical challenges. Recent advancements in microfabrication techniques …

Dynamics Of Flexible Freestanding Structures Under Ground Motion Excitation, Seyed Mohammadreza Farooghi Mehr
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Freestanding structures are characterized by being unattached at the base, exhibiting rigid or flexible motion under ground motion excitation with various potential responses including rocking (rotation at the base about corner points), pure sliding, slide-rocking, and overturning. While rigid freestanding structures have been extensively studied, the behavior of flexible freestanding structures—particularly the interaction between modes involving sliding—remains underexplored. Existing literature has focused on the deformation and rocking motions of flexible freestanding structures through both analytical and experimental approaches, which have shown indications of sliding at the base. These findings highlight the necessity of incorporating sliding motion into analytical models to …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper addresses the challenge of optimal retail expansion in competitive urban environments through a novel approach to the Competitive Facility Location (CFL) problem. Traditional methods for solving CFL problems often struggle with large-scale scenarios, relying on manual pre-selection of candidate sites and imposing limitations on the number of new locations. Our approach leverages Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) enhanced with data enrichment techniques, including community detection on road networks and population weighting based on mobility data. We developed two ALNS variants: Community Geometric Centroid (CGC-ALNS) and Population Weighted Centroid (PWC-ALNS). These methods automate site selection, eliminating manual pre-selection while …
Cyclic Thermal Stability Of Native Oxide Solar Thermal Absorbers On Femnnialcr High Entropy Alloys For Energy Applications, Xiaoxue Gao
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
High entropy alloys (HEAs) are promising candidates for cost-effective high-temperature materials in high-efficiency power cycles. A potential application is in concentrated solar power (CSP) systems, where native oxides of cost-effective FeMnNiAlCr HEAs can also synergistically serve as a high-efficiency solar thermal absorber. However, the huge and repetitive temperature change of the CSP system in day-night cycles greatly challenges its thermal stability. In this thesis, we investigated the cyclic oxidation behavior of FeMnNiAlCr HEAs to improve the optical performance and thermal stability of their native oxides as a solar absorber for next-generation CSP systems. We found that the duplex oxide scale …

Work-Stealing Scheduler For Parallel Cache-Adaptive Algorithms, Chuqi Jiang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Modern computing systems with hierarchical memory structures, such as multiple cache levels, main memory, and external storage, pose significant challenges in optimizing memory usage for algorithm efficiency. Traditional models like the Disk Access Model (DAM) and advancements such as cache-oblivious algorithms have focused on minimizing memory transfers without requiring explicit knowledge of memory hierarchy parameters. However, these approaches assume fixed memory sizes and exclusive cache access, limiting their applicability in real-world, shared-memory environments where memory allocations fluctuate. To address these limitations, cache-adaptive algorithms were developed to dynamically adjust to changing memory profiles, enabling near-optimal performance even in multi-process systems. While …

Towards Verified Vision-Based Neural Network Controllers For Autonomous Lane-Following, Xinhang Ma
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Vision-based neural network controllers have shown promising results in autonomous lane-following tasks, but verifying their safety properties remains a significant challenge due to the high dimensionality of image inputs. This thesis designs an approach to enable formal verification of vision-based lane-following controllers by first developing an end-to-end autonomous system combining deep learning-based lane detection with reinforcement learning control. To enable formal verification, we introduce a generator-based framework that bridges the gap between high-dimensional image space and low-dimensional vehicle states, allowing us to leverage existing verification tools while maintaining the vision-based nature of the controller.
We further enhance our verification framework …

Fiber-reinforced composites are increasingly popular due to their specific strength and stiffness, making them ideal for high-performance applications. However, these materials primarily exhibit superior properties in-plane, while their out-of-plane characteristics remain comparatively weaker. Previous research has shown that the most effective method to enhance out-of-plane properties involves the incorporation of carbon nanotubes. Experimental tests have demonstrated significant improvements in properties such as tension, flexural, short beam shear, and fracture toughness. Alongside these experimental studies, analytical equations have been developed to predict the behavior of these composites under various loading conditions, including tension, bending, shear, and fracture. Existing models primarily address …
