An Empirical Study On The Capability Of Large Language Models In Learning Causality, Joseph Bergin Dec 2024

An Empirical Study On The Capability Of Large Language Models In Learning Causality, Joseph Bergin

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Large language models (LLMs), including Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s GPT series, and Meta’s Llama, have driven remarkable advancements in artificial intelligence, achieving complex, human-like performance across many fields. These transformer-based models are skilled at processing and generating many types of textual information, enabling them to perform a variety of tasks. However, an important question remains about their actual capacity to grasp causal relationships—whether these models can truly differentiate between causal directions or simply respond based on learned patterns. This thesis tests this ability by evaluating LLMs on tasks created to test their understanding of causal, anti-causal, and third-party reasoning. We conduct …

Leveraging P4 Programmable-Hardware Switches For In-Network Pmu Packet Recovery, Evan Michael Bonar Dec 2024

Leveraging P4 Programmable-Hardware Switches For In-Network Pmu Packet Recovery, Evan Michael Bonar

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) systems are essential for real-time power grid monitor- ing but often face data loss due to network delays, equipment malfunctions, or transmis- sion errors. Traditional centralized recovery solutions introduce significant latency and scalability challenges. This thesis presents a P4-based in-network recovery mechanism that embeds detection and recovery directly into the data plane of P4-enabled programmable switches, significantly reducing recovery time and infrastructure complexity. Using the Aurora 610 switch, the system detects missing packets via sequence number analysis and recovers magnitudes with an efficient register-based algorithm.

Evaluation demonstrates high accuracy and low latency, achieving a mean absolute …

Electrical Engineering

In recent years, the operation of the electric power grid has become more efficient and resilient due to the integration of renewable energy sources (RESs). Solar and wind energy are being incorporated aggressively into the main grid, while other RESs like biomass and geothermal energy are also on the rise. However, the intermittent nature of these RESs necessitates the use of energy storage devices (ESDs) as a backup for electricity generation such as batteries, supercapacitors, and flywheel energy storage systems (FESS). This paper provides a thorough review of the standardization, market applications, and grid integration of FESS. It examines the …

Interpreting Strain Caused By Transient Well Testing, Soheil Roudini

All Dissertations

Understanding reservoir properties and structure is essential to managing subsurface operations, such as geologic storage of CO2 or production of water, hydrocarbons or heat. Previous work demonstrated the potential of analyzing strain data during transient well tests by estimating hydraulic diffusivity using a type-curve-like approach. The following dissertation aims to pursue this potential by developing and evaluating methods for interpreting strain tensor data to improve subsurface characterization. The research advances the classic, intuitive method of using type-curves to interpret well tests, but it also brings together modern computational methods from machine learning, proxy modeling and Bayesian inversion, and it …

In agricultural contexts, the demand for continuous and precise measurement of multiple ions is crucial. While arrays of solid-contact ion-selective electrodes (SCEs) have been developed previously, there has been limited emphasis on their continuous and long-term monitoring of ions. Addressing this gap, our work introduces an innovative sensor array utilizing Ni-HAB MOF as an ion-to-electron transducer, enabling real-time detection of nitrate, potassium, and pH levels. The sensors exhibit exceptional stability, eliminating the need for frequent recalibration. For instance, the K+-selective sensor displays an unprecedentedly low potential drift of 0.05 µV/h, surpassing existing solid-contact sensors by two orders of magnitude. Similarly, …

Stress-Dependent Mohr–Coulomb Shear Strength Parameters For Intact Rock, Hao Li, Leo Pel, Zhenjiang You, David Smeulders

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Rock strength is imperative for the design and stability analysis of engineering structures. The Mohr–Coulomb (M-C) criterion holds significant prominence in geotechnical engineering. However, the M-C criterion fails to accurately capture the nonlinear strength response and neglects the critical state of rocks, potentially leading to inaccuracies in the design phase of deep engineering projects. This study introduces an innovative stress-dependent friction angle and cohesion (SFC) for the M-C criterion to capture the nonlinear strength responses of intact rocks, spanning from non-critical to critical states (brittle to ductile regions). A novel method for determining these stress-dependent parameters at each corresponding σ3 …

Stress-Dependent Instantaneous Cohesion And Friction Angle For The Mohr–Coulomb Criterion, Hao Li, Leo Pel, Zhenjiang You, David Smeulders

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The strength criterion of rock is essential for stability control and safety design of geotechnical engineering constructions. Due to its widespread adoption, the Mohr–Coulomb (M-C) criterion is prominent among strength criteria. However, the M-C criterion is constrained by three significant limitations: it fails to capture the nonlinear strength response, overlooks the critical state, and disregards σ2. This study introduces a novel Stress-dependent Instantaneous Friction angle and Cohesion (SIFC) model for the M-C criterion to represent the convex strength envelope of intact rock, covering the spectrum from non-critical to critical states. In pursuit of this objective, an innovative approach for calculating …

The optical fiber was integrated into specifically designed 3-dimensional printed mold, where manual polishing of the fiber took place. Microsphere Photolithography (MPL) techniques was employed to pattern periodic nanoantenna arrays on the polished surface, incorporating multiple disk diameters at a fixed periodicity. Subsequent gold deposition/lift-off were carried out to transfer the pattern from the photoresist to the fiber core, resulting in highly periodic hexagonal closed pack (HCP) arrays of nano disks. These arrays can significantly enhance the SERS signal intensity compared to …

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Slopes are a crucial structure in open pit mines. Their design has implications on the economic, safety and environmental operation of the mining industry. Designing stable slopes can be challenging due to the complexities introduced by the stratigraphy and hydrology of the strata. With rising commodity costs and inflation rates, mining operating costs are increasing. Reducing operational costs is necessary for mining industries to remain competitive. While steepening the pit slope can decrease stripping materials and save money, it also increases the risk associated with slope surges. Therefore, optimizing slopes is crucial for both financial and safety reasons. Numerical models …
