Nonlinear And Time-Modulated Metamaterials: Applications At Microwave Frequencies, Hady Mohammed Saied Sayed Moussa
Nonlinear And Time-Modulated Metamaterials: Applications At Microwave Frequencies, Hady Mohammed Saied Sayed Moussa
Dissertations and Theses
Metamaterials (the Greek prefix meta, means beyond) are artificially structured materials that interact with the incoming waves in extraordinary ways, beyond the properties of natural materials, yielding unusual and exotic electromagnetics phenomena. By careful engineering of the material properties, invoking nonlinear elements and/or time-modulating some of the material parameters, linearity and/or time-invariance can be broken in metamaterials, enabling extraordinary wave phenomena that open opportunities for the microwave engineering community, including the creation of nonreciprocal devices, frequency conversion, and more. In this dissertation, we explore, investigate, design, and fabricate metamaterials that open new applications for nonlinearity-based and time-varying devices, particularly in …

The Use Of The Pile Driving Analyzer For Piles Seated On Rock, William Eason
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The PDA Test has been used for mostly driven piles since the 1970s. The PDA test gets the capacity of the pile by measuring the displacement of the pile being driven into the ground by using sensors called accelerometers. For the case in Georgia, the pile is sitting on the rock and being struck by the hammer selected. This pile sits on a hole that is already pre-drilled into the ground. There are concerns when striking the pile on hard rock such as damaging the pile because of too much hammer energy or other safety concerns in the field that …

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
With the increase in availability, feedstocks, and properties of alternative fuels, compatibility issues emerge between current engine platforms often requiring a limit on the blend percentage of alternative fuel in conventional fuel or alteration to the engine platform. Two key metrics were identified, autoignition quality and lubrication characteristics, as vital for the proper function of a compression ignition engine, and if the blend of alternative fuels matches these two criteria for the diesel standard, then the resulting blend percentage can be considered as a viable alternative for complete replacement of conventional petroleum ULSD. Autoignition quality was matched using blends S-8, …

Piv Measurements Of Open-Channel Turbulent Flow Under Unconstrained Conditions, James K. Arthur
Piv Measurements Of Open-Channel Turbulent Flow Under Unconstrained Conditions, James K. Arthur
Faculty Journal Articles
Many open-channel turbulent flow studies have been focused on highly constrained conditions. Thus, it is rather conventional to note such flows as being fully developed, fully turbulent, and unaffected by sidewalls and free surface disturbances. However, many real-life flow phenomena in natural water bodies and artificially installed drain channels are not as ideal. This work is aimed at studying some of these unconstrained conditions. This is achieved by using particle image velocimetry measurements of a developing turbulent open-channel flow over a smooth wall. The tested flow effects are low values of the Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness Re …

Using Long Short-Term Memory (Lstm) Networks With The Toy Model Concept For Compressible Pulsatile Flow Metering, Indranil Brahma
Faculty Journal Articles
The metering of periodically oscillating pulsating flow has traditionally relied on eliminating pulsations, which is not possible for many systems such as internal combustion engines. Recent advances in the Deep Learning Suite of tools allow the extraction of useful information from complex signals acquired by inexpensive sensors. In this work, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks have been proposed to meter highly compressible pulsatile flow by learning the relationship between the average flow rate and the temporal patterns of standard orifice measurements. The model was built and evaluated with separate training and testing datasets that had different pulsation frequencies and waveforms. …

Spatial Ensemble Distillation Learning Based Real-Time Crash Prediction And Management Framework, Md Rakibul Islam
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Real-time crash prediction is a complex task, since there is no existing framework to predict crash likelihood, types, and severity together along with a real-time traffic management strategy. Developing such a framework presents various challenges, including not independent and identically distributed data, imbalanced data, large model size, high computational cost, missing data, sensitivity vs. false alarm rate (FAR) trade-offs, estimation of traffic restoration time after crash occurrence, and real-world deployment strategy. A novel spatial ensemble distillation learning modeling technique is proposed to address these challenges. First, large-scale real-time data were used to develop a crash likelihood prediction model. Second, the …

Safety Considerations For Setting Variable Speed Limits On Freeways, Md Tarek Hasan
Safety Considerations For Setting Variable Speed Limits On Freeways, Md Tarek Hasan
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
This thesis focuses on evaluating the appropriate speed at which vehicles should travel under different traffic conditions on freeways and its impact on crash frequency. The common belief is that the lower speed results in fewer crashes as reduced speed provides drivers with more time to react effectively and avoid collisions. However, this perspective overlooks the interplay among traffic speed, average spacing between consecutive vehicles, and the distance available for stopping a vehicle. Hence, we propose a safety parameter termed ‘Safety Correlate' (SCORE), which is defined as the proportion of average spacing relative to the stopping distance. To determine the …

Prediction Of Single Proppant Terminal Settling Velocity In High Viscosity Friction Reducers By Using Artificial Neural Networks And Xgboost, Xiaojing Ge, Rong Lu, Ghith Biheri, Abdulmohsin Imqam, Baojun Bai
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
High viscosity friction reducers (HVFRs) have been recently gaining more attention and increasing in use, not only as friction-reducing agents but also as proppant carriers. The settling velocity of the proppant is one of the key outputs to describe their proppant transport capability. However, it is influenced by many factors such as fluid properties, proppant properties, and fracture properties. Many empirical/physics-based models and correlations to predict particle settling velocity have been developed. However, they are usually based on certain assumptions and have applicable limits. In contrast, machine learning models can be considered as a black box. The objective of this …
