This short communication highlights the value of drone mass and its distribution, a topic that despite its importance has received scant attention in the rapidly growing drone literature. In particular, the focus is on the impact of mass distribution on drone viability, performance, and sustainability.

Implementing Super-Resolution Of Non-Stationary Tides With Wavelets: An Introduction To Cwt_Multi, Matthew Lobo, David A. Jay, Silvia Innocenti, Stefan A. Talke, Steven Dykstra, Pascal Matte
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Tides are often non-stationary due to non-astronomical influences. Investigating variable tidal properties implies a tradeoff between separating adjacent frequencies (using long analysis windows) and resolving their time variations (short windows). Previous continuous wavelet transform (CWT) tidal methods resolved tidal species. Here, we present CWT_Multi, a Matlab code that: a) uses CWT linearity (via the “Response Coefficient Method”) to implement super-resolution (Munk and Hasselman 1964); b) provides a Munk-Hasselman constituent-selection criterion; and c) introduces an objective, time-variable form of inference (“dynamic inference”) based on time-varying data properties. CWT_Multi resolves tidal species on time-scales of days and multiple constituents per species with …

E-commerce and house deliveries have experienced a rapid growth in the last two decades. The return of online shopping products is an undesirable side effect of online shopping that has not been properly studied in the transportation literature. Utilizing binary logit models, this research answers two novel research questions focusing on the online shopping channel: (i) What household characteristics are associated with a higher or lower propensity to return online purchases? and (ii) What type of products contribute to positive return delivery rates? To answer these questions models are developed using data collected from a household online survey of e-commerce …

Strong And Ductile Al–Mn–Mg–Sc–Zr Alloy Achieved In Fabrication-Rate Enhanced Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Hao Zhang, Lai Chang Zhang, Hongyu Liu, Xiaodong Niu, Marcus C. Lam, Wenzhe Zhang, Xiaojie Jin, Fuzhong Chu, Xinhua Wu, Sheng Cao
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The high cost of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) fabricated high-strength Sc containing aluminium alloy hinders its applications. To reduce the cost, we reported a LPBF fabricated strong and ductile Al–Mn–Mg–Sc–Zr alloy using large layer thicknesses to improve the fabrication efficiency on coarse powder particles. A high relative density exceeding 99.2% was achieved at layer thicknesses up to 120 μm. In post-process heat-treated specimens, the yield strength only had a slight 6% decrease from layer thickness of 30 to 120 μm; such a decrease in strength was attributed to the larger grain size resulted from the adopted larger layer thickness. …
Comparative Study On Development Of Novel Catalytic Oxidation For Removing Emerging Contaminants, Abdul H. Asif
Comparative Study On Development Of Novel Catalytic Oxidation For Removing Emerging Contaminants, Abdul H. Asif
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
‘Wastewater treatment’ is not itself a new concept, where global water bodies have been polluted since the evolution of mankind. As a result of human activities including domestic, industrial and commercial practices, levels of water pollution through aqueous contaminants are increasing every day. Moreover, rapid industrialisation and recent human progress has given rise to a new classification of pollution, that of emerging contaminants (ECs). Further, these chemicals are highly resistant to biodegradation and are capable of travelling, where they can penetrate from one part of the world to another. Whilst traditional wastewater treatment techniques, such as adsorption, might be effective …
Experimental Investigation Of The Interface And Wetting Characteristics Of Rock-H2-Brine Systems For H2 Geological Storage, Mirhasan Hosseini
Experimental Investigation Of The Interface And Wetting Characteristics Of Rock-H2-Brine Systems For H2 Geological Storage, Mirhasan Hosseini
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The projected rise in demand for hydrogen (H2) production is a response to several factors, including greenhouse gas emissions caused by burning fossil fuels, depletion of fossil fuel reserves, and their uneven distribution around the earth. Thus, increased requirement for large-scale hydrogen storage solutions is anticipated to overcome imbalance between energy demand and supply. Deep underground formations such as salt caverns and porous reservoir rocks (e.g., depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs and deep saline aquifers) are necessary to achieve such volumes in practice. This process is known as underground hydrogen storage (UHS) which is technically very similar to underground natural gas storage. …

Natural Manganese Ores For Efficient Removal Of Organic Pollutants Via Catalytic Peroxymonosulfate-Based Advanced Oxidation Processes, Zhengxin Yao, Roufei Chen, Ning Han, Hongqi Sun, Ngie Hing Wong, Lusi Ernawati, Shaobin Wang, Jaka Sunarso, Shaomin Liu
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs) for in situ persistent organic pollutant (POP) remediation in aqueous solutions can be a promising technology. However, this technology is constrained by its high toxicity and cost of metal oxide and non-metal catalysts for PMS activation. Here, we investigated the catalytic performance of a widely available natural mineral, manganese ore (MO), for PMS activation. A series of natural MO samples in an aqueous solution were prepared via the Fenton-like reaction. The samples' crystalline structure, surface morphology, textural properties, and other surface characteristics of the selected MO were systematically characterized. The effects of PMS concentration and …
Closing The Modern Irish Municipal Wastewater Phosphorus Cycle, Ciaran O’Donnell
Closing The Modern Irish Municipal Wastewater Phosphorus Cycle, Ciaran O’Donnell
Theses
Phosphorus (P) is an essential life-supporting nutrient for which there is no substitute. P naturally cycles within nature. Modern farming practice and food production have altered the natural P cycle. Successive crop harvests remove P from the soil as crops and transport them to urban areas to feed the population. To replace P removed from the soil through these crop harvests, mineral P fertilisers are applied to the soil to sustain crop production. Mineral P fertilisers are derived from finite phosphate rock. The European Union does not have an indigenous supply of phosphorus rock, which poses a significant issue for …

The Parasitic Inductance of a Capacitor Depends on its Physical Structure. Due to the Geometry of 3-Terminal Capacitors, They Boast a Lower Parasitic Inductance Compared to 2-Terminal Capacitors of the Same and Possibly Smaller Package Sizes. While the Parasitic Inductance of a Single 3-Terminal Capacitor May Be Lower, using Multiple 2-Terminal Capacitors May Result in Similar Performance. in This Work, the Inductance of 2-Terminal (0201, Nominal 2.2 UF) and 3-Terminal (0402, Nominal 4.3 UF) Capacitors is Extracted and Compared through Measurements. from Our De-Embedding Method and Characterized Capacitors, the Inductance of 2-Terminal Capacitors is Only About 20 PH Higher Than …

A Statistical Shmoo For A Decision Feedback Equalizer (Dfe), Junyong Park, Donghyun Kim

This article proposes a statistical shmoo for a Decision Feedback Equalizer (DFE). A statistical shmoo shows a Bit-Error Rate (BER) distribution of a system depending on conditions such as a threshold voltage and sampling time. The previous statistical eye diagram can be converted to a statistical shmoo except for the case of a DFE. In the shmoo, rows and columns represent different threshold voltages and sampling times, respectively. Thus, the DFE operation also depends on each row and column. Furthermore, a DFE may have error propagations because of substantial noise. Therefore, this article proposes a statistical shmoo for an ideal …
