Inelastic Pushover Response Characterization And Prediction Of A Dual Performance High-Capacity Hybrid Frame-Wall, Salih Can Rakici
Wayne State University Dissertations
The inelastic behavior of a dual performance high-capacity hybrid frame-wall system intended for cold formed steel construction is presented. The investigated frame-wall system features cold formed steel studs to support gravitational loads and a combination of cold formed steel straps and nonprestressed strands to provide braced frame action for lateral loads. In addition, hollow structural steel chords are used to resist overturning moments. The chords can be either hollow structural steel sections or steel tubes filled with ultra-high performance concrete. System behavior when subject to lateral loads or lateral displacements is characterized in terms of failure mode, ultimate strength, initial …
Investigation Of Biomechanical Thresholds Of Mild To Severe Brain Injury Using An Anisotropic Visco-Hyperelastic Finite Element Head Model: Model Development And Simulation Of Impact Injury And Blast Injury, Ding Lyu
Wayne State University Dissertations
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a significant cause of death and disability in the United States, with approximately 2.5 million emergency department visits, 288,000 hospitalizations, and 56,800 deaths reported to be related to TBI. The majority of TBIs are caused by blunt impacts resulting from falls and motor vehicle crashes. The head injury criterion is the only standard used to assess the safety related to vehicles, personal protective gear, and sports equipment. A new brain injury criterion assessing rotation velocity effect was recently proposed by the US government. Unfortunately, it derivation from animal data scaled to a computer model of …

A serious risk to the production safety of coal mines is coal dust. The wettability of coal may be successfully changed by adding surfactants to water. However, the creation of very effective dust suppressants is constrained by the lack of knowledge about the microscopic interaction mechanism between coal dust and surfactants. In this investigation, we explained macroscopic experimental phenomena from a molecular perspective. The lauryl polyoxyethylene ethers (C12 (EO)n, n = 7,15,23) were selected. The macromolecular model of anthracite with 55 different components was constructed. Surface tension experiments and hydrophilic lipophilic balance (HLB) calculations showed that the ability of surface …

It is well-known that the indentation hardness property is influenced by micro-fabric characteristics. The effect of textural characteristics on Vickers indentation hardness is attempted to be interpreted in this research. For this purpose, 12 fresh limestone samples from various quarries were tested to determine the Vickers hardness. Thereafter, quantitative textural parameters were identified and characterized using image processing techniques and micro-fabric analysis based on microphotographs of thin sections. Microphotographs of the thin sections were reviewed and digital boundaries of the grains were clarified and drawn. After preparation and filtering of the digitized thin sections, four basic properties of each grain, …

Scaled distance is used to predict blast wave overpressure surrounding the detonation of a known mass of explosive under the assumption that the charge geometry is spherical. Altering charge geometry from spherical overdrives regions of the blast wave resulting in areas of higher overpressures than predicted by scaled distance calculations. Empirical data can be used to scale the blast wave overpressure to cylindrical charges, but available overpressure data for more complex geometries is not available in published literature. In the present study the time of arrival of the blast wave was measured from high-speed video and the Rankine-Hugoniot relationship used …

The intelligent and autonomous learning of patients' activities will lead to an incredible progression toward future smart e-health systems. With the recent advances in artificial intelligence, signal processing, and computational capabilities; light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology can play a significant role in enhancing the current patients' activity recognition (PAR) systems. In this paper, we propose confidential and accurate patient arms behavior monitoring using a standalone three-dimensional (3D) LiDAR sensor. Due to the unavailability of LiDAR data, we use a computer-programmed 3D simulator to generate virtual-LiDAR (V-LiDAR) 3D point cloud data that simulates real patient movements. These virtual data are …

A simplified physical-based model for deep-snapback transient voltage suppressors (TVS) is developed in this article. While based on physics, the number of parameters and components is minimized, so the model can be tuned easily from available measurements of the packaged TVS. SPICE convergence issues seen in previous snapback device models are eliminated by adding nonlinear damping components to the model. No convergence issues were seen among any of the simulations performed for this study, which includes transmission-line pulse tests with multiple levels and rise times. The proposed model was used to represent two different TVS devices and was validated in …

The increasing penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) calls for an advanced active and reactive power (PQ) control strategy in microgrids. To enhance the controllability and flexibility of the IBRs, this paper proposed an adaptive PQ control method with trajectory tracking capability, combining model-based analysis, physics-informed reinforcement learning (RL), and power hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiments. First, model-based analysis proves that there exists an adaptive proportional-integral controller with time-varying gains that can ensure any exponential PQ output trajectory of IBRs. These gains consist of a constant factor and an exponentially decaying factor, which are then obtained using a model-free deep reinforcement learning approach …

This paper covers model-based fault detection and isolation for linear and nonlinear distributed parameter systems (DPS). The first part mainly deals with actuator, sensor and state fault detection and isolation for a class of DPS represented by a set of coupled linear partial differential equations (PDE). A filter based observer is designed based on the linear PDE representation using which a detection residual is generated. A fault is detected when the magnitude of the detection residual exceeds a detection threshold. Upon detection, several isolation estimators are designed using filters whose output residuals are compared with predefined isolation thresholds. A fault …

Radio frequency interference can degrade the receiving sensitivity of antennas. The interference is usually caused by certain coupling structures, such as layouts without adequate grounding for the radio frequency signal return path. Those structures can be modeled as a set of equivalent dipole moments when they are electrically small. Herein, the dipole moment model-based coupling framework is applied to a practical cellphone design case to devise an engineering solution. The coupling framework incorporates dipole moments as radiation sources and a coupling model based on the reciprocity theorem. Unfortunately, near-field scan probes often lack access to all locations, owing to the …

A Methodology For Statistical Mean Wave Climate Regime Characterisation In Oceanic Islands: The Case Of The Southern Coast Of Tenerife, Emilio Megías, Manuel García-Román
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Oceanic islands of volcanic origin tend to have peculiar characteristics, such as: exposure to many wave directions; grouping in archipelagos; steep coastal slopes; and small coastal shelves. All these features require certain considerations in wave climate studies. These types of studies, when wave spectra are not available and have to be performed with parametric data, can be unreliable without an adequate systematic treatment. In this work we propose a methodology consisting of pre-classification according to the peak period and subsequent separation into different sectors according to the geographical fetch. The island of Tenerife is the case study, and in particular …

The need for deepening students’ appreciation for the importance of engineering ethics remains ever present. However, accomplishing this learning outcome can be challenging, as the principles often come across as abstract and distant to many undergraduates. To combat these challenges, a group-based assignment and corresponding in-class role-playing activity were developed for an upper-level ocean engineering elective course, based on a local case study about offshore wind energy development. The new pedagogical approach aims to present engineering ethics in a more tangible and relatable way by requiring students to role-play a real-world scenario from their own university’s backyard. Students worked on …

Although nearly all households in Vietnam have connected to the national grid, electricity shortage in the residential sector is still an issue. One measure of residential electricity shortage is the micro-renewable energy system (micro-RES), but little is known about the drivers for household adoption of such system and whether the presence of a micro-RES can help to reduce household energy consumption. This paper examines the characteristics of households that have adopted a micro-RES and investigates whether the presence of micro-RES would result in a decrease in energy demand by using fixed-effects models. Analysis was carried out on the 2016 and …

Peer review of grant proposals is critical to the National Science Foundation (NSF) funding process for STEM disciplinary and education research. Despite this, scholars receive little training in effective and constructive review of proposals beyond definitions of review criteria and an overview of strategies to avoid bias and communicate clearly. Senior researchers often find that their reviewing skills improve and develop over time, but variations in reviewer starting points can have a negative impact on the value of reviews for their intended audiences of program officers, who make funding recommendations, and principal investigators, who drive the research or want to …
