Network Economics-Based Crowdsourcing In Online Social Networks, Natasha S. Kubiak Apr 2023

Network Economics-Based Crowdsourcing In Online Social Networks, Natasha S. Kubiak

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This thesis addresses the challenge of user recruitment by various competing marketing agencies (MAs) in Online Social Networks. A labor economics approach, following the principles of contract theory, is devised to enable MAs to reveal the potential of each participating user to contribute a personalized level of quality and quantity of information to the crowdsourcing process. The MAs objective is to maximize their personal benefit, i.e., total utility obtained, given its budget. The latter optimization problem is formulated as a Generalized Colonel Blotto (GCB) game among the MAs, where each MA aims at incentivizing each user to report its information. …

Development Of Novel Electrodes And Electrolytes For Safer Aqueous Ammonium Ion Batteries With Enhanced Performance., Shelton Farai Kuchena Apr 2023

Development Of Novel Electrodes And Electrolytes For Safer Aqueous Ammonium Ion Batteries With Enhanced Performance., Shelton Farai Kuchena

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Lithium-ion battery (LIBs) system has dominated the battery market because of its superior energy and power density. Problems related to LIBs such as safety, scarcity of cobalt and lithium have led researchers to explore alternative battery systems. NH4+ ion is a nonmetal charge carrier with lower molar mass (18 mol g-1) and smaller hydrated ionic size (3.31 Å) which results in excellent electrochemical properties. Furthermore, NH4+ ion has a tetrahedral structure that has no preferred orientation as compared to spherical metal ions giving a different intercalation chemistry based on hydrogen bonding. These properties …

Seasonal Seepage Fluid Flow And Pressure Detection Beneath Flood Protection Levees In The Lower Mississippi River Valley Using Non-Invasive Geophysical Methods, Daniel Locci Apr 2023

Seasonal Seepage Fluid Flow And Pressure Detection Beneath Flood Protection Levees In The Lower Mississippi River Valley Using Non-Invasive Geophysical Methods, Daniel Locci

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study explores the use of shear-wave seismic reflection and electrical resistivity techniques to complement our understanding of seepage pore pressure variations and soil type estimation beneath earthen levees in the Mississippi River floodplain. The seasonal variations of water level in the river create changes in pore pressure in the adjacent aquifer, which can be detected using time-lapse shear-wave velocity analysis. The seismic reflection patterns during these pressure variations show changes in velocity that can be translated into changes in effective pressure, allowing us to distinguish between confined and leaky aquifers.

In addition, the integration of geophysical methods such as …

Influence Of Henna Extracts On Static And Dynamic Adsorption Of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate And Residual Oil Recovery From Quartz Sand, Mohd Syazwan Mohd Musa, Priveqa Yaashini Gopalan, Nurudeen Yekeen, Ahmed Al-Yaseri Apr 2023

Influence Of Henna Extracts On Static And Dynamic Adsorption Of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate And Residual Oil Recovery From Quartz Sand, Mohd Syazwan Mohd Musa, Priveqa Yaashini Gopalan, Nurudeen Yekeen, Ahmed Al-Yaseri

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The application of surfactant flooding for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) promotes hydrocarbon recovery through reduction of oil-water interfacial tension and alteration of oil-wet rock wettability into the water-wet state. Unfortunately, surfactant depletion in porous media, due to surfactant molecule adsorption and retention, adversely affects oil recovery, thus increasing the cost of the surfactant flooding process. Chemical-based materials are normally used as inhibitors or sacrificial agents to minimize surfactant adsorption, but they are quite expensive and not environmentally friendly. Plant-based materials (henna extracts) are far more sustainable because they are obtained from natural sources. However, there is limited research on the …

Structural Testing Of Concrete Walls On-Edge With Combined Axial And Out-Of-Plane Loading, Salam Al-Rubaye, Marc Maguire Apr 2023

Structural Testing Of Concrete Walls On-Edge With Combined Axial And Out-Of-Plane Loading, Salam Al-Rubaye, Marc Maguire

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Full-scale testing of structural components can be time consuming and difficult. The design of full- scale slender concrete walls is highly influenced and controlled by second-order and out-of-plane bending loads. Previous experiments on out-plane bending of slender walls and insulated walls have been performed with bending in the direction of gravity (with or against). Additionally, most of the research considering out-of-plane bending does not include an axial load and suffers from inaccurate results due to not simulating the actual loading and constraining conditions or safety issues. This testing method was developed expressly for the determination of slender wall behavior in …

Characterization And Amelioration Of Filtration Difficulties Encountered In Metabolomic Studies Of Clostridium Thermocellum At Elevated Sugar Concentrations, Bishal D. Sharma, Daniel G. Olson, Richard J. Giannone, Robert L. Hettich, Lee R. Lynd

Dartmouth Scholarship

Clostridium thermocellum, a promising candidate for consolidated bioprocessing, has been subjected to numerous engineering strategies for enhanced bioethanol production. Measurements of intracellular metabolites at substrate concentrations high enough (>50 g/L) to allow the production of industrially relevant titers of ethanol would inform efforts toward this end but have been difficult due to the production of a viscous substance that interferes with the filtration and quenching steps during metabolite extraction. To determine whether this problem is unique to C. thermocellum, we performed filtration experiments with other organisms that have been engineered for high-titer ethanol production, including Escherichia coli and Thermoanaerobacterium …

Neutrosophic Marcos In Decision Making On Smart Manufacturing System, Nivetha Martin, Said Broumi, S. Sudha, R. Priya

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Business firms prefer software-based smart manufacturing systems to monitor and supervise all production activities in a decentralized manner. The choice of software decides the degree of manufacturing robustness. This paper proposes a neutrosophic-based MARCOS (Measurement of Alternatives and Ranking according to COmpromise Solution) method of MCDM with single-valued triangular neutrosophic numbers to solve the software selection problem. The proposed neutrosophic method is applied to hypothetical data to test the efficacy of the method. The results obtained using the proposed method are compared with crisp, fuzzy, and intuitionistic data representations, and suitable inferences are acquired. The proposed method has several industrial …

The Intersection Of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy And Engineering Design In Secondary Stem, Mariam Manuel, Jessica Gottlieb, Gina Svarovsky, Rebecca Hite

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The instructional practices of the engineering design process and culturally responsive pedagogy have each garnered national attention and multiple decades of research. Findings from the respective literature bases call for educators and policymakers to integrate these two pedagogical approaches into K-12 classroom instruction. Scholars have argued that this integration would improve student engagement and academic achievement. There is a significant amount of research that supports the positive student outcomes associated with each approach, yet there remains a dearth of literature that addresses the integration of these two practices into the science and mathematics content areas. The movement around educational reform …

Improved Experimental Validation Of An Electromagnetic Subcell Model For Narrow Slots With Depth, Michael Anthony Illescas Apr 2023

Improved Experimental Validation Of An Electromagnetic Subcell Model For Narrow Slots With Depth, Michael Anthony Illescas

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The coupling of electromagnetic (EM) energy into a system can disrupt operation of essential electronics present within it. Metal enclosures are used to shield these systems from potentially harmful electromagnetic interference (EMI). Seams and gaps in such metal enclosures are minimized but unavoidable for reasons such as maintenance and repair. These seams and gaps create an entry point for EM energy to couple into the system. Entry points are often modeled by EM analysts as narrow slots defined by their length, width, and depth. The depth of these slots can become significant compared to the wavelength, introducing resonances associated with …

A Molecular Dynamics Study Of Atomic Diffusion Effects On Thermomechanical Properties Applying Laser Additive Alloying Process For The Cantor High Entropy Alloy, Mathew Farias, Han Hu, Shanshan Zhang, Jianzhi Li, Ben Xu

Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

High entropy alloys (HEAs) can be manufactured in many conventional ways, but it becomes difficult to fabricate heterogeneous materials and structures. The Selective Laser Melting (SLM) method generally melts pure elemental powders or prefabricated alloy powders without an alloying process. In-situ alloying in SLM, which is also called Laser Additive Alloying (LAA), using pure elemental powders becomes a promising method for creating HEA with heterogeneous structures. However, the effect of the diffusion of elements in the molten pool on the formation of HEA remains unclear. In this paper, the well-discussed Cantor HEA was studied in an in-situ alloying situation, where …

We consider the thermal, mechanical, and chemical contact of two subsystems composed of ideal gases, both of which are not in the thermodynamic limit. After contact, the combined system is isolated, and the entropy is determined through the use of its standard connection to the phase space density (PSD), where only those microstates at a given energy value are counted. The various intensive properties of these small systems that follow from a derivative of the PSD, such as the temperature, pressure, and chemical potential (evaluated via a backward difference), while equal when the two subsystems are in equilibrium are nevertheless …

Electronic air cleaning (EAC) technologies have garnered significant attention for use in buildings. Many EAC technologies rely on the addition of reactive constituents to indoor air to react with gas-phase compounds, enhance particle deposition, and/or inactivate microorganisms. However, limited data are available on the efficacy of many EAC technologies and their potential to form chemical byproducts during operation. Here we experimentally evaluate the indoor air quality impacts, specifically targeting particles and gases but not microbial constituents, of a commercially available additive oxidizing EAC that generates positive and negative ions and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Tests were conducted in a large unoccupied …

Large-Scale Testing Of Lightweight Cellular Concrete Backfill For Sliver-Fill Mse Wall Configurations, Meghann Dee Morgan Apr 2023

Large-Scale Testing Of Lightweight Cellular Concrete Backfill For Sliver-Fill Mse Wall Configurations, Meghann Dee Morgan

Theses and Dissertations

Lightweight cellular concrete (LCC) is an aerated or foamed concrete where 25-80% of the concrete matrix consists of air voids. The high volume of air voids reduces the strength but significantly decreases the weight of the material, which has made it an attractive alternative to soil for retaining structure backfills. Though the use of LCC has increased, little research has been performed on the large-scale behavior of retaining structures containing LCC as backfill. This research test attempts to fill knowledge gaps found with regard to the use of LCC in a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall with a trapezoidal or …

Bodyslam: Feasibility Of Tracking Human Kinematics With Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (Slam), Sepehr Laal

Dissertations and Theses

We evaluated a new wearable technology that fuses inertial sensors and cameras for tracking human kinematics. These devices use on-board simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms to localize the camera within the environment. Significance of this technology is in its potential to overcome many of the limitations of the other dominant technologies. Our results demonstrate this system often attains an estimated orientation error of less than 1° and a position error of less than 4cm as compared to a robotic arm. This demonstrates that SLAM's accuracy is adequate for many practical applications for tracking human kinematics.
