Precision agriculture (PA) has been defined as a “management strategy that gathers, processes and analyzes temporal, spatial and individual data and combines it with other information to support management decisions according to estimated variability for improved resource use efficiency, productivity, quality, profitability and sustainability of agricultural production.” This definition suggests that because PA should simultaneously increase food production and reduce the environmental footprint, the barriers to adoption of PA should be explored. These barriers include: 1) the financial constraints associated with adopting DSS, 2) the hesitancy of farmers to change from their trusted advisor to a computer program often behaves …

Design Of Bamboo Reinforced Concrete Beams Considering Variability In Tensile Strength Of Bamboo, Bibek Bhardwaj, Michael Stoner, Weichiang Pang

Publications

In recent years, the price of steel has soared, making steel reinforcement in concrete structures unaffordable for households in low-income countries. Seismic activities in low-income households, particularly those in developing countries, pose a significant threat to life and property to unreinforced concrete structures. The application of bamboo as an alternative to steel in reinforced concrete is still in its early stages of development. Unlike steel, bamboo is a natural material, and its structural properties vary greatly based on species, location, age, and geometric properties. Thus, the design of bamboo-reinforced concrete involves more uncertainties than steel-reinforced concrete. This research investigates the …

The global water crisis growth has led to a tremendous increase in membrane technology research. Membranes are favored over many other technologies for water treatment because, in principle, they require no chemical additives and can be used isothermally at low temperatures. Membranes that can reject contaminants and salts, produce adequate permeate flux values, and require minimal cleaning are highly demanded. However, most synthesized membranes on the market have associated problems, such as membrane fouling; inverse relationships between flux and solute rejection; and the high cost of synthesis, operation, and maintenance. Therefore, there is a continuied need to produce membranes with …

Automated Pavement Construction Inspection Using Uncrewed Aerial Systems (Uas)—Hot Mixed Asphalt (Hma) Temperature Segregation, Reihaneh Samsami, Amlan Mukherjee, Colin Brooks

Michigan Tech Publications

Temperature segregation in Hot Mixed Asphalt (HMA) pavement construction leads to performance problems, such as reduced fatigue life. During construction, Quality Assurance (QA) inspection procedures are required to evaluate the pavement condition and detect the segregated areas. In traditional HMA highway construction inspection processes, temperature differences are investigated manually, by sampling the HMA behind the paver. In these processes, inspectors are required to work adjacent to traffic and alongside moving or backing equipment. These processes do not provide a complete temperature profile of the mat, endanger the inspectors’ safety, and require on-site experienced inspectors. An Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS) enables …

Enhancement Of Interlaminar Shear Strength Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites With Freeform 3d Printing Using Magnetic Compaction & Zt-Cfrp Technologies, Mohammad Rakibul Islam

Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) laminates often exhibit matrix-sensitive weaknesses and flaws when produced via conventional additive manufacturing (AM) techniques due to the introduction of voids and defects during the AM process. This thesis employs a new approach called Magnetic Compaction Force Assisted-Additive Manufacturing (MCFA-AM) to fabricate Carbon Nanofibers (CNF)Z-threaded CFRP (i.e., ZR-CFRP) composite laminates. This novel method utilized a magnetic force to simultaneously levitate, deposit, and compact Continuous Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (C-CFRP) composites in free space and rapidly solidifies the CFRP part without any mold; and effectively reduces the voids. Previous studies have demonstrated that the incorporation of …

Effect Of Surface Fluid Entrapment In A Laminar Flat Plate Boundary Layer, Abigail Hays Jul 2023

Effect Of Surface Fluid Entrapment In A Laminar Flat Plate Boundary Layer, Abigail Hays

Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations

For streamlined objects in laminar flow, the drag is dominated by friction drag. To counteract this, the boundary condition of the object can be changed to introduce an apparent slip on the surface. A number of approaches have been proposed for introducing surface slip to reduce drag and viscous resistance in fluid flows. This work investigates a novel approach to providing slip via fluid entrapment in a perforated domain embedded in the surface. The fluid entrapment system uses a cavity underneath the domain to allow entrapment of fluid of the same type, or supply air to the surface perforations in …

Dice: Blessed Or Cursed?, Warren Campbell, Cameron Miller, Xavier Simpson Jul 2023

Dice: Blessed Or Cursed?, Warren Campbell, Cameron Miller, Xavier Simpson

SEAS Faculty Publications

Every year, hundreds of millions of dice are manufactured and sold. Because of the impossibility of precise dimensional control and nonuniform density, none of these dice are fair. Polyhedral dice manufactured for role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons typically contain 4-sided, 6-sided, 8-sided, 10-sided, 12-sided, and 20-sided dice (D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, and D20). D20s are especially problematic. In 3000-roll tests of several D20s, only about one-quarter tested fair. In light of the inherent unfairness of most dice, we explored the possibility of using dice mechanics involving multiple dice to obtain fairer results. For D20s, summing three dice gave …

Numerical Modeling Of Rock Blocks With Nonpersistent Rough Joints Subjected To Uniaxial Compressive And Shear Loadings, Mostafa Asadizadeh, Mahdi Moosavi, Mohammad Farouq Hossaini, Ahmadreza Hedayat, Taghi Sherizadeh, Hossein Masoumi

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Characterizing the mechanical behavior of jointed rocks is important to understand the behavior of structures in rock masses. Jointed rocks can be composed of persistent and nonpersistent joints where the impact of nonpersistent joints requires careful consideration for an accurate rock mass mechanical characterization. Most previous investigations into nonpersistent jointed rocks focused on joints with smooth surfaces, and a few experimental studies focused on nonpersistent rough joints and nothing specific has been reported numerically. Therefore, this study investigated several synthetic jointed rocks with nonpersistent rough joints numerically under uniaxial compressive and shear loadings. The PFC2D-based synthetic rock mass (SRM) approach …

Near-Optimal Motion Planning Algorithms Via A Topological And Geometric Perspective, Aakriti Kumari Upadhyay Jul 2023

Near-Optimal Motion Planning Algorithms Via A Topological And Geometric Perspective, Aakriti Kumari Upadhyay

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Motion planning is a fundamental problem in robotics, which involves finding a path for an autonomous system, such as a robot, from a given source to a destination while avoiding collisions with obstacles. The properties of the planning space heavily influence the performance of existing motion planning algorithms, which can pose significant challenges in handling complex regions, such as narrow passages or cluttered environments, even for simple objects. The problem of motion planning becomes deterministic if the details of the space are fully known, which is often difficult to achieve in constantly changing environments. Sampling-based algorithms are widely used among …

A Non-Line-Of-Sight Mitigation Method For Indoor Ultra-Wideband Localization With Multiple Walls, Mengyao Dong, Yihong Qi, Xianbin Wang, Yiming Liu Jul 2023

A Non-Line-Of-Sight Mitigation Method For Indoor Ultra-Wideband Localization With Multiple Walls, Mengyao Dong, Yihong Qi, Xianbin Wang, Yiming Liu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ultra-wideband (UWB) ranging techniques can provide accurate distance measurement under line-of-sight (LOS) conditions. However, various walls and obstacles in indoor non-LOS (NLOS) environments, which obstruct the direct propagation of UWB signals, can generate significant ranging errors. Due to the complex through-wall UWB signal propagation, most conventional studies simplify the ranging error model by assuming that the incidence angle is zero or the relative permittivity's for different walls are the same to improve the through-wall UWB localization performance. Considering walls are different in realistic settings, this article presents a through-multiple-wall NLOS mitigation method for UWB indoor positioning. First, spatial geometric equilibrium …

Nonmonotonic Effect Of Chemical Heterogeneity On Interfacial Crack Growth At High-Angle Grain Boundaries In Fe-Ni-Cr Alloys, Yuchu Wang, Bita Ghaffari, Christopher Taylor, Simon Lekakh, Carlos Engler-Pinto, Larry Godlewski, Yang Huo, Mei Li, Yue Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An intermittent pattern is observed in the modeling of interfacial cyclic-loading crack growth at high-angle grain boundaries in ternary Fe-Ni-Cr alloys. Different from conventional wisdom of stress-intensity factor, the abrupt crack advances are found driven by extreme value statistics - namely, the aggregation of atoms with most compressive residual stresses. In addition, inherently non-affine atomic stress fluctuations are discovered, and the fluctuations peak at intermediate level of chemical heterogeneity, causing the fastest crack growth. Implications of such nonmonotonic mechanism in regard to the origin of intermediate-temperature embrittlement phenomena are also discussed.
