Disaster Management And Recovery: Estimating The Disaster Impacts On Construction Costs And Evaluating The Policy Effects On Disaster Recovery, Sooin Kim
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
A rapidly increasing number of natural hazards pose an inevitable threat to communities. More than a hundred natural hazards strike the United States every year, causing numerous fatalities and billions of dollars of property and infrastructure damage. The total cost of U.S. weather and climate disasters since 1980 has already exceeded 2 trillion dollars. As the number of U.S. county-level disasters has approximately tripled in recent decades due to rapid climate change, a greater share of the population is now more likely to expose to natural disasters. Adequate and timely reconstruction and recovery in post-disaster situations are essential for the …

In the past decade, a new paradigm gained popularity among researchers aiming to protect structures from low-frequency seismic vibrations using metamaterials. However, developing a workable design for metamaterials is still challenging, given the various factors such as material availability, size, and shape of its components. This project proposes a new configuration that can widen the attenuation frequency of metamaterials and evaluates the attenuation ability of double-graded metamaterials. The project investigates unit cell parameters such as but not limited to size, density, and modulus of elasticity to finalize a unit cell with the broadest possible bandgap by using common construction material …

Topics In Optimization For Sustainable Energy Planning, Bahareh Nasirian
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
ABSTRACT: Due to the current trend of rising energy demand, finding alternate energy sources is vital. Many cities consider renewable energy as a component of a sustainable future. Typically, organic wastes are considered renewable energy sources. Wastes can be converted to proper energy forms using waste-to-energy technologies. On the other hand, more renewable energy sources in the power system may increase energy market stochasticity, alter system operation, and pose new problems for the current supply and demand equilibrium, which consequently requires new control methods. Hence, taking into account the issues mentioned above, in this research, we address organic waste conversion …

Wirelessly Powering A Sea Of Sensors For Perimeter Security Applications, Ian River Chavez
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
his thesis presents an innovative application of Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) technology for perimeter security systems. The approach leverages the physical properties of IPT to detect intrusions by monitoring voltage changes in wirelessly powered sensor nodes, which can double as components of an intrusion detection system. Disturbances in node orientation, indicative of potential intrusions, alter the sensor node’s resonant frequency and create measurable voltage shifts. This study explores the concept in-depth, from the analysis of resonant inductive coupling in various resonant inductive modes, to the design of transmit loops, sensor nodes, and the techniques required to ensure optimum power transfer. …

Tandem Peptides Targeting Her2 For Delivery Of Cd44 Sirna Into Her2+ Breast Cancer Cells In Vitro, James Kalogeros
All Theses
More than 300,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and approximately 48,000 women will die this year due to the disease in the United States. HER2+ breast cancer accounts for 20-25% of invasive breast cancer, and it has a worse prognosis and higher early-stage mortality rate than other breast cancer subtypes. Common treatments for HER2+ breast cancer involve surgical removal of the breast or systemic therapy with chemotherapeutic drugs, both of which cause damage to healthy tissue. Due to the lack of a natural ligand for the HER2 receptor, there is a need for improved targeting strategies for the …

Vibration Fatigue Of Leaded Solder Joint Interconnects For Pcb Electronics, John Crowder
All Theses
With the increasing prevalence of electronic equipment worldwide, there is also a decrease in the size of the components on their printed circuit boards (PCBs), leading to an increase in the density of these components. A significant amount of failure in electronic equipment is vibration fatigue of solder joints and their attachments. However, the complexity of these PCBs and their components has made finite element modeling (FEM) more complex, adding considerable time to create and analyze a model.
This paper aims to provide a literature review for the vibration fatigue of leaded solder components, create a test setup, and validate …
Glass Bubbles Grafted With Polymer Brushes For Liquid Hydrocarbon Fire Extinguishment, Randall Snipes
Glass Bubbles Grafted With Polymer Brushes For Liquid Hydrocarbon Fire Extinguishment, Randall Snipes
All Dissertations
The current most efficient solution to fighting liquid pool fires involves the use of firefighting foams containing fluorinated surfactants. The physiochemical properties of these foams are considerably different to all other currently available firefighting foams. Fluorinated surfactants lower the surface tension to a point where the foam solution draining from the foam structure forms a continuous aqueous film on the surface of a volatile hydrocarbon fuel, adding an additional barrier to fuel vapor diffusion to the burning fire. For this reason, these foams qualify as aqueous film forming foams (AFFFs). However, fluorinated compounds are extremely harmful for the environment due …

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
ABSTRACT: Bicycling is beneficial for health, the environment, road users’ flexibility, and personal expenses. Compared to motor vehicles, they are an active mode of transport, cause minimum pollution, are affordable, and can easily navigate through the increasing traffic all over the world. This increase in traffic, however, also increases the possibility of crashes with motor vehicles. Bicyclists, being more exposed to traffic than drivers, suffer fatal consequences from a crash. Therefore, a standard tool is required to understand bicyclist behavior on the road. This tool can provide insights into bicyclists’ behavior so that appropriate infrastructure or policy changes can be …

Medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction (MPFLR) has emerged as the procedure of choice for recurrent patellar dislocation. This addresses soft tissue injury but does not address underlying anatomic factors, including trochlear dysplasia, that are commonly present and increase risk of dislocation. Quantification of the stability offered by other surgical interventions, namely, medializing tibial tubercle osteotomy (mTTO) and trochleoplasty, with and without MPFLR, may provide insight for surgical choices in patients with trochlear dysplasia. We developed subject-specific finite element models based on magnetic resonance scans from a cohort of 20 patients with trochlear dysplasia and recurrent patellar dislocation. The objectives of this …

Investigation Of Issues Concerning Wellbore Leakage, Ishtiaque Anwar
Civil Engineering ETDs
A range of applications, such as subsurface fluid storage facilities, geothermal wells, and CO2 storage wells, are concerned about leakage along wellbores. The research described in this dissertation was largely directed toward wellbore leakage concerns for the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). For SPR wellbores, multiple fluids are likely to exist in fractures and flow paths associated with leaky wellbores, including liquids (e.g., liquid hydrocarbon - crude oil) and gases (e.g., gas ex-solved from liquid and/or nitrogen from MIT tests). Anomalous pressure records have been observed at the wellhead of SPR wellbores, indicative of wellbore leakage. In a few cases, …

In wellbore systems, the microannulus between the steel and the cement has been shown to be a critical leakage pathway. This microannulus offers unique roughness, aperture distribution, and wetting conditions, which are critical in understanding and explaining the potential sealing efficiency of a repair material. An experimental configuration was developed to better understand how a repair material would displace an existing material in the microannulus, visually evaluate potential instabilities on the flow patterns developed, and how efficient the potential repair would be. For that purpose, the experimental configuration consisted of a planar, rough cement surface and a transparent acrylic plate …

Prevention And Reversal Of Elastin-Associated And Phosphate-Dependent Arterial Calcification Using Targeted Nanotherapeutics In Pre-Clinical Models, Fatema Tuj Zohora
All Dissertations
Vascular calcification can be life-threatening, involving calcium phosphate crystal deposits in the blood vessels. The calcification in the intimal layer of the arterial wall is usually associated with atherosclerotic plaque build-up that, in the advanced stage, harbors ‘dispersed’ and ‘spotty’ deposits of calcium phosphate crystals in the necrotic core of the plaque. In contrast, medial arterial calcification (MAC) can form independently of atherosclerosis and appears as ‘Railroad-like’ calcific deposits along degraded elastin lamellae in the medial layer of arteries. The mechanisms of such elastin-associated medial arterial calcification and potential therapies are the key concerns of this dissertation. MAC is common …

Developing An Early Warning System Of Highway Slope Failure Based On In-Situ Hydraulic Conductivity Of Soil, Alinda Gupta
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Highway slope failure is globally a momentous issue. Highway slope failure poses a significant issue in transportation infrastructure. Several factors can contribute to slope failures, including geological conditions, weather events, and human activities. Weather events like heavy rainfall, cyclic shrinkage and swelling can trigger slope failures constructed on high plastic clays. It increases pore water pressure, causing soil saturation, and inducing failure. The consequences of highway slope failures are severe, ranging from traffic disruptions, road closures, and damage to vehicles and infrastructure, to potential injuries or loss of lives. Addressing and mitigating slope failure risks is crucial for ensuring the …

Low Internal Air Space In Plants With Crassulacean Acid Metabolism May Be An Anatomical Spandrel, Alistair Leverett, Anne Borland, Emma Inge, Samantha Hartzell
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) is a photosynthetic adaptation found in at least 38 plant families. Typically, the anatomy of CAM plants is characterised by large photosynthetic cells and a low percentage of leaf volume comprised of internal air space (% IAS). It has been suggested that reduced mesophyll conductance (gm) arising from low % IAS benefits CAM plants by preventing the movement of CO2 out of cells and ultimately minimising leakage of CO2 from leaves into the atmosphere during day-time decarboxylation. Here, we propose that low % IAS does not provide any adaptive benefit to …
