Design And Testing Of A Composite Compressor Rotor, Mauro Noel V. De Leon
Theses and Dissertations
Additive manufacturing (AM) and molding are manufacturing methods known for building representations or replicas of conceptualized engine components, but was considered impractical for manufacturing operating engine components. More recent technology has rendered composite materials (combining high-temperature polymers and fiber reinforcement) capable of withstanding the temperature and structural requirements to compete with conventional turbomachinery metals. This study explores the application of several high-temperature polymers (ULTEM 9085, Onyx-Carbon fiber, and Epoxy-Carbon fiber) and their survivability in the operating conditions of a P400 Engine compressor. The tests conducted for this study determined their viability as compressor materials. This study required conducting tensile specimen …
Leveraging Xgeo Orbits For Cislunar Space Domain Awareness, Jay Laone
Leveraging Xgeo Orbits For Cislunar Space Domain Awareness, Jay Laone
Theses and Dissertations
With recent interest in using cislunar orbits for a variety of missions, it is more important than ever to also have cislunar space domain awareness. This thesis aims to bridge the gap between traditional LEO/GEO architectures and the new cislunar orbit architectures with orbits higher than GEO but still within the Earth sphere of influence, called xGEO. This research effort first explores the feasibility of xGEO orbits by examining the errors that the two-body assumption builds over time. Findings suggest that the two body assumption can be used to varying degrees depending on the orbit radius. This study has found …

Theses and Dissertations
The process of creating metal components through additive manufacturing is changing the way different industries can avoid the shortcomings of traditional metal production. Metals such as tungsten, molybdenum, and rhenium have many advantages for different applications, especially when alloyed together. In this study, an additively manufactured alloy containing 70% molybdenum, 25% tungsten, and 5% rhenium (70Mo-25W-5Re) is tested for its strength, ductility, hardness, and porosity. The 70Mo-25W-5Re alloy is printed through Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) under different conditions such as printing speed and printing atmosphere. Additionally, the effects of post printing heat treatment are conducted to understand the advantages …
Effects Of A Nitrogen And Hydrogen Build Atmosphere On The Properties Of Additively Manufactured Tungsten, Dana C. Madsen
Effects Of A Nitrogen And Hydrogen Build Atmosphere On The Properties Of Additively Manufactured Tungsten, Dana C. Madsen
Theses and Dissertations
Additively manufactured tungsten was printed in pure nitrogen, nitrogen-2.5% hydrogen, and nitrogen-5% hydrogen atmospheres as part of a 2^3 full factorial designed experiment and subjected to room temperature and high-temperature three-point-bend testing, chemical analysis, hardness testing, and microstructural imaging techniques. The pure nitrogen specimens exhibited the highest strength and ductility at both high temperature and room temperature. Chemical analysis showed a 2-8x reduction in compositional oxygen relative to unprocessed powder. Hardness values for all samples was between 306.8 and 361.5 HV1. It is proposed that adding hydrogen into the build atmosphere reduced the available energy density for tungsten melting by …

Performance Assessment Of Navigation Using Carrier Doppler Measurements From Multiple Leo Constellations, Michael J. Hartnett
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this work is to characterize a novel navigation method which uses carrier Doppler shift measurements from LEO satellites. An ever-growing reliance on the GNSS has coincided with an increase in ways it can be degraded or denied, whether naturally occurring or man-made. These potentially disastrous threats to traditional navigation and timing have necessitated new technologies to augment GNSS in the case of an outage. LEO constellations, whose size and higher signal power make them potentially useful for navigation, are one technology that has been explored. The navigation algorithms detailed in this research use Doppler measurements from 8 …

Neutron Spectral Effect On Microelectronic Performance Response, Wade Kloppenburg
Theses and Dissertations
Response of 2N2222 bipolar junction transistors to neutrons from a pulsed thermonuclear or pulsed fission source are researched. Measurements used for comparing performance included the base-collector junction current-voltage and capacitance-voltage characteristics and device gain degradation. Little change was detected in steady-state operation of the base-collector junction, but evidence in the dynamic and capacitance measurements establish effects based on environment. Experimental results are compared to literature results and parameters are explored using a device model simulation code.
Formulation And Characterization Of Fast-Curing Plastic Scintillators With High-Z Loading, Theodore W. Stephens
Formulation And Characterization Of Fast-Curing Plastic Scintillators With High-Z Loading, Theodore W. Stephens
Theses and Dissertations
Development of novel fast-curing plastic scintillators is highly advantageous due to their potential to be manufactured via 3D printing. Several formulations were developed that exhibit enhanced photon sensitivity, producing modest but discernible photopeaks at an incident gamma energy of 122 keV. The photon sensitivity is achieved via bismuth high-Z loading; however, this practice typically results in diminished light yields. Subsequent formulations, which varied the photoinitiator concentration and curing time, demonstrated successful curing with sufficient plastic hardness, reduced purple discoloration, reduced heat buildup during curing, and resulted in less cracking during the curing process, all of which were correlated with lower …
Examining Failures Of Kc-135s Using Survival Analysis, Vanessa I. R. Unseth
Examining Failures Of Kc-135s Using Survival Analysis, Vanessa I. R. Unseth
Theses and Dissertations
The United States Air Force manages an inventory of 396 KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft. With mission capability rates falling and total non-mission capability supply rates increasing, it is necessary to take a deeper look at recurrent failures. The study applies non-parametric and semi-parametric survival models to a dataset retrieved from LIMS-EV to look at the duration(s) until failure for the KC-135. Results of non-parametric models show cumulative failure rates increase as sorties or flight hours increase. In addition, semi-parametric models or Cox proportional hazards models with frailty confirm that locations or air bases are not associated with recurrent failures.

Determining Allowable Parametric Uncertainty In An Uncommon Quadrotormodel For Closed Loop Stability, Mehmet Baskin, Mehmet Kemal Leblebi̇ci̇oğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this article, control oriented uncertainty modeling of an uncommon quadrotor in hover is discussed. This quadrotor consists of two counter-rotating big rotors on longitudinal axis and two counter-rotating small tilt rotors on lateral axis. Firstly, approximate linear model of this vehicle around hover is obtained by using Newton--Euler formulation. Secondly, specific uncertainty is assigned to each parameter. Resulting uncertain model is converted into a linear fractional transformation framework for robustness analysis. Next, the most critical uncertain parameters in terms of robust stability in a proposed quadrotor model are investigated using $ \mu $ sensitivities. Finally, skewed-$ \mu $ analysis …

Scattering Analyses Of Arbitrary Roughness From 2-D Perfectly Conductiveperiodic Surfaces With Moments Method, Yunus Emre Yamaç, Ahmet Kizilay
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, a periodic-MoM-based code with high accuracy performance is developed to calculate electromagnetic scattering from a periodic conductive surface in two dimensions with any degree of roughness. Firstly, the existing separate methods in the literature are reviewed step by step to compose a periodic-MoM solution for 2-D periodic surfaces. Then, the dynamic selection of optimal formulation of the periodic-MoM solutions created using these existing methods is evaluated to reduce solution time and obtain high accuracy. In this study, the performance parameters of the existing methods are investigated in solving a real 3-D scattering problem by a periodic-MoM for …

On An Electrostatic Micropump With A Rigorous Mathematical Model, İbrahi̇m Efe, Fati̇h Di̇kmen, Yury Tuchkin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The novel electrostatic micropump model for applications such as in biomedical drug delivery is presented. The geometrical arrangement of the coupling rigid electrodes lets us exploit our mathematically rigorous boundary integral equation formulation and its solution. Thus, the charge densities involving the fringe effects on the plates are obtained by means of analytical regularization method (ARM) constructed for annular strips earlier. The efficiency of the constructed method is demonstrated with respect to the direct integral equation solvers implemented via the entire domain Galerkin method and point matching. The main physical characteristics of the suggested system and their deviation from that …

A New Classification Method Using Soft Decision-Making Based On An Aggregation Operator Of Fuzzy Parameterized Fuzzy Soft Matrices, Samet Memi̇ş, Serdar Engi̇noğlu, Uğur Erkan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Recently, a precise and stable machine learning algorithm, i.e. eigenvalue classification method (EigenClass), has been developed by using the concept of generalised eigenvalues in contrast to common approaches, such as k-nearest neighbours, support vector machines, and decision trees. In this paper, we offer a new classification algorithm called fuzzy parameterized fuzzy soft aggregation classifier (FPFS-AC) to combine the modelling ability of soft decision-making (SDM) and classification success of generalised eigenvalues. FPFS-AC constructs a decision matrix by employing the similarity measures of fuzzy parameterized fuzzy soft matrices fpfs -matrices) and a generalised eigenvalue-based similarity measure. Then, it applies an SDM method …

Defect Classification Of Railway Fasteners Using Image Preprocessing And Alightweight Convolutional Neural Network, İlhan Aydin, Mehmet Sevi̇, Mehmet Umut Salur, Erhan Akin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Railway fasteners are used to securely fix rails to sleeper blocks. Partial wear or complete loss of these components can lead to serious accidents and cause train derailments. To ensure the safety of railway transportation, computer vision and pattern recognition-based methods are increasingly used to inspect railway infrastructure. In particular, it has become an important task to detect defects in railway tracks. This is challenging since rail track images are acquired using a measuring train in varying environmental conditions, at different times of day and in poor lighting conditions, and the resulting images often have low contrast. In this study, …

The Analysis And Optimization Of Cnn Hyperparameters With Fuzzy Tree Modelfor Image Classification, Kübra Uyar, Şaki̇r Taşdemi̇r, İlker Ali̇ Özkan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The meaningful performance of convolutional neural network (CNN) has enabled the solution of various state-of-the-art problems. Although CNNs achieve satisfactory results in computer-vision problems, they still have some difficulties. As the designed CNN models are deepened to achieve much better accuracy, computational cost and complexity increase. It is significant to train CNNs with suitable topology and training hyperparameters that include initial learning rate, minibatch size, epoch number, filter size, number of filters, etc. because the initialization of hyperparameters affects classification results. On the other hand, it is not possible to make a definite inference for the hyperparameter initialization and there …

One of the current pressing problem for all DOTs is the corrosion-oriented deterioration of the existing metal culverts. These metal culverts typically are designed for a life of 50 years. However, corrosion is making them last no longer than 30years. Here we propose use of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) pipe section as a fit-in GFRP profile liner for complete repair and rehabilitation of the corroded metal culvert with an expected life of 75 years. This is mainly because of the corrosion free nature of the GFRP material. In the current study, the design method for using glass fiber-reinforced polymer …

Using Google Trends As A Proxy For Occupant Behavior To Predict Building, Chun Fu, Clayton Miller
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
In recent years, the availability of larger amounts of energy data and advanced machine learning algorithms has created a surge in building energy prediction research. However, one of the variables in energy prediction models, occupant behavior, is crucial for prediction performance but hard-to-measure or time-consuming to collect from each building. This study proposes an approach that utilizes the search volume of topics (e.g., education or Microsoft Excel) on the Google Trends platform as a proxy of occupant behavior and use of buildings. Linear correlations were first examined to explore the relationship between energy meter data and Google Trends search terms …
