An Origami-Based Thickness-Accommodating Bistable Mechanism In Monolithic Thick-Sheet Materials, Larry L. Howell, Spencer P. Magleby, Nathan A. Pehrson
Faculty Publications
Origami-based mechanisms can provide useful capabilities in folding large structures to stow in small volumes. However, when using monolithic thick-sheet materials for these types of mechanisms, accommodating the thickness proves challenging. One approach to solve this is to create compliant mechanisms along the fold lines that inherently store energy when actuated and causes the mechanism to tend toward its low energy state. This tendency can be used to create bistable states. We outline a method to use this stored energy to achieve bistable states and name the resulting mechanism an origami-based “Thickness-accommodating bistable interior vertex” (TABIV) in monolithic thick-sheet materials. …

Kinematic/Static Model Of Complex Compliant Mechanisms With Serial-Parallel Substructures: A General Approach, Larry L. Howell, Mingxiang Ling, Junyi Cao
Faculty Publications
Kinematic and static analyses of compliant mechanisms are crucial at the early stage of design, and it can be difficult and laborsome for complex configurations with distributed compliance. In this paper, a general and concise kinematic/static modeling method of flexure-hinge-based compliant mechanisms with arbitrary serial-parallel substructures is presented to provide accurate and efficient solutions by combining the matrix displacement method with the transfer matrix method. The transition between the elemental stiffness matrix and the transfer matrix of the flexure hinge and the flexible beam is straightforward, enabling the condensation of a hybrid serial-parallel substructure into one equivalent element simple. Then, …

The hydration of cement can release a substantial amount of heat that can be problematic in mass concrete structure. This heat of hydration (HH) can produce thermal stresses that can crack the concrete and compromise the integrity of the structure leading to its failure. Throughout the years, different methods have been developed in order to mitigate the negative effects of the HH on mass concrete structures. This study presents a comprehensive review of the previous methods documented in the literature that have been utilized in controlling the temperature rise due to the HH in mass concreting. The reviewed methods were …

Initial Investigation Of Generating Electricity From Concrete, Mohamed Abdel-Raheem, Ofsman Quintana
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Cement heat of hydration (HH) can be problematic especially in mass concrete structures as it causes thermal stresses that can lead to failure. Previous and current research has focused on minimizing the HH and mitigating its effects. The methods currently used for treating the HH in mass concreting varies between using: adding supplementary material to concrete, precooling of aggregates and mixing water, post-cooling of concrete, insulation of concrete members, and placement of concrete in thin lifts. These methods result in adding more cost and time to the construction project. This research sheds the light on a new approach in treating …

A Two-Dimensional Finite Element Model Of The Grain Boundary Based On Thermo-Mechanical Strain Gradient Plasticity, Yooseob Song, George Z. Voyiadjis
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
In this work, a two-dimensional finite element model for the grain boundary flow rule is developed based on the thermo-mechanical gradient-enhanced plasticity theory. The proposed model is temperature-dependent. A special attention is given to physical and micromechanical nature of dislocation interactions in combination with thermal activation on stored and dissipated energy. Thermodynamic conjugate microforces are decomposed into energetic and dissipative components. Correspondingly, two different grain boundary material length scales are present in the proposed model. Finally, numerical examples are solved in order to explore characteristics of the proposed grain boundary flow rule.
Probabilistic Analysis And Resistance Factor Calibration For Deep Foundation Design Using Monte Carlo Simulation, Thuy Vu, Erik Loehr, Douglas Smith
Probabilistic Analysis And Resistance Factor Calibration For Deep Foundation Design Using Monte Carlo Simulation, Thuy Vu, Erik Loehr, Douglas Smith
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
The method of incorporating the sources of parameter uncertainty is crucial when conducting probabilistic analysis for service limit state (SLS) design of a deep foundation. This paper describes the method of using Monte Carlo simulation for probabilistic analyses and for calibration of resistance factors of drilled shafts at SLS. The paper presents discussions on the finding of an impossible case, where the different combinations of load, variability of soil strength and target probability of failure made it impossible to calibrate the SLS resistance factors. Resistance factors for drilled shafts in shale are introduced, and were found to be responsive to …

Cryptocurrencies have gained wide adoption by enthusiasts and investors. In this work, we examine seven different Android cryptowallet applications for forensic artifacts, but we also assess their security against tampering and reverse engineering. Some of the biggest benefits of cryptocurrency is its security and relative anonymity. For this reason it is vital that wallet applications share the same properties. Our work, however, indicates that this is not the case. Five of the seven applications we tested do not implement basic security measures against reverse engineering. Three of the applications stored sensitive information, like wallet private keys, insecurely and one was …
Complete Measurement System For Measuring High Voltage And Electrical Field Using Slab-Coupled Optical Fiber Sensors, Nikola Stan
Complete Measurement System For Measuring High Voltage And Electrical Field Using Slab-Coupled Optical Fiber Sensors, Nikola Stan
Theses and Dissertations
A slab-coupled optical fiber sensor (SCOS) falls into a narrow class of all-dielectric optical fiber electric field sensors, which makes it a perfect candidate for measurements of high electric fields in environments where presence of conductors is highly perturbing to the system under test. Its nonlinear response to high fields requires a new nonlinear calibration technique. A nonlinear calibration method is explained and demonstrated to successfully measure high electric fields, as well as high voltages with dynamic range up to 50 dB. Furthermore, a SCOS can be fitted into narrow spaces and make highly localized measurements due to its small …

Image Super-Resolution Technique Using Deep Inception Based Residual Networks, Wazir Muhammad
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Recently, deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have achieved exceptional performance over the past few years, in the area of image processing and computer vision task, especially on single image super-resolution (SISR). It is an immensely challenging task and has multiple practical applications, such as medical image processing, satellite imaging, facial image enhancement, and compressed image improvement. However, the majority of the existing image super-resolution CNN-based methods have been developed by stacking an innumerable number of layers and blindly increasing the size of the network architecture. Conversely, this leads to an increase in the model sizes and higher computational complexities. Furthermore, …
Computational Dynamics And Virtual Dragline Simulation For Extended Rope Service Life, Muhammad Wardeh
Computational Dynamics And Virtual Dragline Simulation For Extended Rope Service Life, Muhammad Wardeh
Doctoral Dissertations
"The dragline machinery is one of the largest equipment for stripping overburden materials in surface mining operations. Its effectiveness requires rigorous kinematic and dynamic analyses. Current dragline research studies are limited in computational dynamic modeling because they eliminate important structural components from the front-end assembly. Thus, the derived kinematic, dynamic and stress intensity models fail to capture the true response of the dragline under full operating cycle conditions. This research study advances a new and robust computational dynamic model of the dragline front-end assembly using Kane's method. The model is a 3-DOF dynamic model that describes the spatial kinematics and …

Auto-Locking Knee Brace, Kareena Hudson
Electrical and Computer Engineering
The Auto-Locking Knee Brace provides a support system for those with weak or otherwise unreliable knees. It functions by detecting sudden changes in direction and locking the brace into place to help prevent a fall. The knee brace is worn regularly and programmed to be able to identify the difference between normal movement and a fall risk. When a fall risk is detected the knee brace is programmed to lock into place preventing the fall. If a fall is falsely detected, or after stability is regained, the knee brace contains a lock-release mechanism. All the user has to do is …

The Pocket Generator A Self-Charging Backup Battery, Cadin White
Electrical and Computer Engineering
The purpose of this project was to provide a personal external power source for small electronic devices such as smart phones. The objective was to use triboelectric effects between materials with different electron affinities in order to store energy from mechanical movement. This effect allowed the pocket generator to collect energy as it was carried by a person throughout their daily routine. Directing that energy into a rechargeable battery allowed that energy to be used later for powering a personal electronic device.

This work intends to recover ions of heavy metal from wastewater using reactive extraction by nanofibers-supported liquid membrane (NSLM) in a microchannel. The use of supported liquid membrane enables simultaneous extraction and stripping (i.e., recovery of the extractant) processes. In this study, the NSLM was applied in a microchannel to minimize mass transfer resistance, hence improving overall performance of the extraction. Copper (II) ion was used as a model ion, while di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) dissolved in kerosene was used as the …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Diuron is one of the pesticides. Its residual can contaminate natural water resource resulting in environmental and human health problems. Several processes have been used to remove diuron contamination. Nowadays, an electrochemical advanced oxidation process (EAOP) in a microchannel reactor is used to degrade diuron owing to its high efficiency. In this research, the diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film was used as an electrochemical electrode because it has superior hardness and electrical conductivity. In this research, we have successfully synthesized the DLC thin films using graphite as target material on the surface of 304 stainless steel substrate by the direct …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of The Climate Inside A Chicken House, Nuttaphon Kanjanaudomsuk
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Nowadays, most of chicken products are from a closed house system. Climate inside such chicken house can significantly affect chicken welfare and its productivity. Moreover, Thailand is in a tropical region where thermal stress is easily occurred. Suitable operating condition and chicken house design can help improve interior climate which can be evaluated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling technique. In this study, realizable k-ε model, energy conservation and species transport equations were applied to simulate the air velocity, temperature and relative humidity, respectively, inside the chicken house. The model was validated with measured air velocity, temperature and relative humidity …

The Development Of Pt/Wox/Al2o3 For 1,3-Propanediol Production From Glycerol, Parama Uttraporn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In this work, the researcher studied the hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol, by compared the catalytic activity between AlOOH (boehmite) and g-Al2O3. The catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation method. To investigate the properties, catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, BET, H2-TPR, H2-TPD, H2-TPR, SEM-EDX, Py-IR, NH3-IR, and XAS. The type of support showed to be of significance in deciding the activity and the selectivity to 1,3-propanediol. It was found that 2%Pt/WOx/g-Al2O3 gave higher activity and selectivity of 1,3-propanediol, which due to a large amount of active site and Brønsted acid site in the catalyst. The effects of H2 pressure, …
