Effect Of Weld Nugget Size On Failure Mode And Mechanical Properties Of Microscale Resistance Spot Welds On Ti–1al–1mn Ultrathin Foils, Feng Chen, Shiding Sun, Zhenwu Ma, G Q. Tong, Xiang Huang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We use tensile–shear tests to investigate the failure modes of Ti–1Al–1Mn microscale resistance spot welds and to determine how the failure mode affects the microstructure, microhardness profile, and mechanical performance. Two different failure modes were revealed: interfacial failure mode and pullout failure mode. The welds that fail by pullout failure mode have much better mechanical properties than those that fail by interfacial failure mode. The results show that weld nugget size is also a principal factor that determines the failure mode of microscale resistance spot welds. A minimum weld nugget size exists above which all specimens fail by pullout failure …

Metasurface Base On Uneven Layered Fractal Elements For Ultra-Wideband Rcs Reduction, Jianxun Su, Yueyang Cui, Zengrui Li, Yaoqing (Lamar) Yang, Yongxing Che, Hongcheng Yin

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A novel metasurface based on uneven layered fractal elements is designed and fabricated for ultra-wideband radar cross section (RCS) reduction in this paper. The proposed metasurface consists of two fractal subwavelength elements with different layer thickness. The reflection phase difference of 180◦ (±37◦) between two unit cells covers an ultra-wide frequency range. Ultra-wideband RCS reduction results from the phase cancellation between two local waves produced by these two unit cells. The diffuse scattering of electromagnetic (EM) waves is caused by the randomized phase distribution, leading to a low monostatic and bistatic RCS simultaneously. This metasurface can achieve …

Comparative Study On Various Dielectric Barriers And Their Effect On Breakdown Voltage, Elham Foruzan, Amir A. S. Akmal, Kaveh Niayesh, Jeremy Lin, Desh Deepak Sharma

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Non-pressurised air is extensively used as basic insulation medium in high-voltage equipment. Unfortunately, an inherent property of air-insulated design is that the system tends to become physically large. On the other hand, the application of dielectric barriers can increase the breakdown voltage and therefore decrease the size of the equipment. In this study, the impact of dielectric barriers on breakdown voltage enhancement is investigated under both direct current (dc) and alternating current (ac) applied voltages. For this purpose, three kinds of dielectric barriers in two different high-voltage electrode structures are investigated. In the first structure, several experiments are carried out …

Elevated Temperature Dependence Of The Anisotropic Visible-To-Ultraviolet Dielectric Function Of Monoclinic Β-Ga2o3, Alyssa Mock, Jeremy Vanderslice, Rafal Korlacki, John A. Woollam, Mathias Schubert

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We report on the temperature dependence of the dielectric tensor elements of n-type conductive β-Ga2O3 from 22 °C to 550 °C in the spectral range of 1.5 eV–6.4 eV. We present the temperature dependence of the excitonic and band-to-band transition energy parameters using a previously described eigendielectric summation approach [A. Mock et al., Phys. Rev. B 96, 245205 (2017)]. We utilize a Bose-Einstein analysis of the temperature dependence of the observed transition energies and reveal electron coupling with average phonon temperature in excellent agreement with the average over all longitudinal phonon plasmon coupled modes reported previously [M. …

Flow Patterns Through Vascular Graft Models With And Without Cuffs, Chia Min Leong, Gary B. Nackman, Timothy Wei

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The shape of a bypass graft plays an important role on its efficacy. Here, we investigated flow through two vascular graft designs±with and without cuff at the anastomosis. We conducted Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) measurements to obtain the flow field information through these vascular grafts. Two pulsatile flow waveforms corresponding to cardiac cycles during the rest and the excitation states, with 10% and without retrograde flow out the proximal end of the native artery were examined. In the absence of retrograde flow, the straight end-to-side graft showed recirculation and stagnation regions that lasted throughout the full cardiac cycle with …

Dislocations Interaction Induced Structural Instability In Intermetallic Al2cu, Qing Zhou, Jian Wang, Amit Misra, Ping Huang, Fei Wang, Kewei Xu

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Intermetallic precipitates are widely used to tailor mechanical properties of structural alloys but are often destabilized during plastic deformation. Using atomistic simulations, we elucidate structural instability mechanisms of intermetallic precipitates associated with dislocation motion in a model system of Al2Cu. Interaction of non-coplanar <001> dislocation dipoles during plastic deformation results in anomalous reactions—the creation of vacancies accompanied with climb and collective glide of <001> dislocation associated with the dislocation core change and atomic shuffle—accounting for structural instability in intermetallic Al2Cu. This process is profound with decreasing separation of non-coplanar dislocations and increasing temperature and is likely to be …

Stent implantation is widely used to treat blocked lumen. Stents were meshed structure made of polymers and metal alloys, including stainless steel, cobalt chrome and nitinol [1]. Clinical studies had demonstrated that stents helped to scaffold the diseased lesion up to one year when tissue adapted to the stented environment [2]. However, the permanently implanted stents inside artery were associated with complications such as stent fracture, tissue inflammation, in-stent restenosis and thrombosis [3]. Currently, biodegradable stents are attracting more attention due to its potential long-term efficacy in treating blocked lumens. The detailed characterizations of biodegradable stents are essential for the …

Poulsen, Ryan M. Pedrigi, Nilesh Pareek, Ismail D. Kilic, Niels R. Holm, Jacob F. Bentzon, Hans Erik Botker, Erling Falk, Rob Krams, Ranil De Silva

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Advanced coronary atherosclerosis assessed by in-vivo optical coherence tomography (OCT) has not been directly compared with histology. In a porcine model with human-like coronary atherosclerosis we compared in-vivo OCT images with histology in five animals. We found a high sensitivity but modest specificity of OCT in classifying fibrous cap atheroma (FCA). The modest specificity was caused by misclassification of FCA lesions as pathological intimal thickening. The misclassification most frequently occurred when plaque burden exceeded ~20%. Compared with histology, OCT has high sensitivity but modest specificity for identifying FCA. The study suggests that plaque burden should be considered when interpreting OCT …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In the process of bone regeneration, new bone formation is largely affected by physico-chemical cues in the surrounding microenvironment. Tissue cells reside in a complex scaffold physiological microenvironment. The scaffold should provide certain circumstance full of structural cues to enhance multipotent mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) differentiation, osteoblast growth, extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition, and subsequent new bone formation. This article reviewed advances in fabrication technology that enable the creation of biomaterials with well-defined pore structure and surface topography, which can be sensed by host tissue cells (esp., stem cells) and subsequently determine cell fates during differentiation. Three important cues, including scaffold …

Heat Transfer Across A Nanoscale Pressurized Air Gap And Its Application In Magnetic Recording, Jinglin Zheng, Yung-Kan Chen, Qin Zhou

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this study, we investigated how a thermally actuated air bearing slider heats up a fast-spinning storage disk through a highly pressurized nanoscale air gap in a magnetic recording system. A Euleriandescription- based computational approach is developed considering heat conduction through a pressurized air film and near-field radiation across the gap. A set of field equations that govern the air bearing dynamics, slider thermo-mechanics and disk heat dissipation are solved simultaneously through an iterative approach. A temperature field on the same order as the hot slider surface itself is found to be established in the disk. The effective local heat …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this work, the apparent shear strength at the interface between a bamboo fiber and the surrounding poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix is quantified. A method for processing pull-out test samples within a controlled embedded length is proposed and the details of the test procedure are presented, along with a critical discussion of the results. Two series of samples are considered: untreated and mercerized bamboo fibers from the same batch, embedded in the same polyester matrix. Electron and optical microscopy are used to observe the fiber–matrix interface before and after the test, and to identify the failure mode of each sample, …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Poly (vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF), a well-recognized electroactive polymer, has been studied extensively over many decades. Recently, there has been increasing interest in tuning the electrical properties of PVDF from ferroelectric to piezoelectric and to pyroelectric, which can be attained via controlling the microscale structure down to the nanoscale structure [1-2]. To optimize the preparation conditions of PVDF and its copolymers, as well as to improve the performance for many applications, comprehensive analytical techniques are of great importance. In this paper, we demonstrate complementary nanoscale characterization and measurement techniques, by conducting a systematic and coordinated study involving scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high …

Reaction Kinetics Of Ethane Partial Oxidation To Acetic Acid, Sulaiman Al-Mayman, Moustafa A. Soliman, Abdulrhman S. Al-Awadi, Yousef S. Al-Zeghayer

Chemical Engineering

The partial oxidation of ethane to ethylene and acetic acid on supported MoVNbPd/TiO2 (P25 of Degussa) has been investigated. Pd was added in a nano-metallic form. The catalyst composition was also different from similar studied catalysts. This results in a better selectivity towards acetic acid formation. The reaction was carried out in a tubular reactor at temperature range 225–275 °C, total pressure range 0–200 psig and oxygen percentage in the feed gas of 10–40%. The feed gas contains ethane and oxygen. In this work, we develop a kinetic model for the reaction for the developed catalyst. In this model, we …

Irrigation Pumps - Preserving Performance, Derrel L. Martin

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

This paper describes how pumps must be matched to operating conditions and power units to provide the desired performance and efficiency. We have recently seen installations where one or more components are not properly matched causing higher than necessary pumping costs. Inspection and maintenance of systems and measurement of flow and pressure will go a long way toward monitoring if the proper conditions are being met. This paper also covers types of pumps, pump components, pump curves, impeller speed and trim, pump staging, affinity laws, pump drives, power units, cavitation, and net positive suction head.

Integration Of Hydrogeophysical Datasets And Empirical Orthogonal Functions For Improved Irrigation Water Management, Catherine E. Finkenbiner, Trenton E. Franz, Justin P. Gibson, Derek M. Heeren, J. D. Luck

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Precision agriculture offers the technologies to manage for infield variability and incorporate variability into irrigation management decisions. The major limitation of this technology often lies in the reconciliation of disparate data sources and the generation of irrigation prescription maps. Here the authors explore the utility of the cosmic-ray neutron probe (CRNP) which measures volumetric soil water content (SWC) in the top ~ 30 cm of the soil profile. The key advantages of CRNP is that the sensor is passive, non-invasive, mobile and soil temperature-invariant, making data collection more compatible with existing farm operations and extending the mapping period. The objectives …

Dynamic Rops Test For Tractors Over 6,000 Kilograms, Caleb M. Lindhorst, Roger M. Hoy, Santosh Pitla, Michael F. Kocher

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

OECD static tests (Codes 4, 6, 7, and 8) for agricultural rollover protective structures (ROPS) have become accepted standards for evaluating the ability of these structures to protect the operator during tractor rollover events. The strength properties of some materials typically used in ROPS change because of cold weather embrittlement at low temperatures. The static ROPS tests lack the ability to evaluate the strength of these structures during cold weather. The use of the dynamic ROPS test is well noted as a means for proving cold weather embrittlement resistance properties. Unfortunately, application of the OECD dynamic ROPS test (Code 3) …
