Effect Of Fe Substitution On Structural, Magnetic And Electron-Transport Properties Of Half-Metallic Co2tisi, Juliana Herran, Parashu Kharel, Pavel Lukashev
Research in the Capitol
In recent years, research on magnetic materials has been one of the most technologically appealing developments in materials science. Among other applications, magnetic materials are essential components of data storage and information processing in computer hardware elements, such as hard drives and random access memories. Here, we present a theoretical study of structural, magnetic and electronic properties of ferrimagnetic Co2Ti1−xFexSi (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5), using density functional calculations. We show that the magnetic moment of Co2Ti1−xFexSi increases when Ti is substituted with Fe, consistent with experimental findings. …
A Low-Cost Arduino-Based Home Security System, Qi Lu
A Low-Cost Arduino-Based Home Security System, Qi Lu
Annual Graduate Student Symposium
Home security is important for every family, especially for the family which lives in a big house. Because the house is much bigger than apartment or dorm, it is hard for the owner to notice if someone is intruding into their house. On the other hand, the home security systems sell in in the market are usually expensive. To address this problem, a low-cost home security system is designed and implemented. When the system is armed, infrared sensors are used to detect intruders. When a person is detected, sensors will send the signal to the user wirelessly, and indoor alarm …

1975 - Sea-Water Intrusion In California, Inventory Of Coastal Ground Water Basins
Water Statutes
The primary purpose of this 1975 bulletin was to show, as completely as available information permitted the status of sea-water intrusion, to the end that local agencies could decide where they had to take steps to reverse the condition. A corollary purpose was to show the need for more information on intrusion in certain areas where the situation was particularly critical. The study was undertaken solely to determine the extent and location of sea-water intrusion into coastal basins and to compile an inventory that would assist local agencies in assessing the water supply conditions in their areas. The effort was …

A Novel Framework To Determine Physiological Signals From Blood Flow Dynamics, Prashanth Chetlur Adithya
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that more than 11.2 million people require critical and emergency care in the United States per year. Optimizing and improving patient morbidity and mortality outcomes are the primary objectives of monitoring in critical and emergency care. Patients in need of critical or emergency care in general are at a risk of single or multiple organ failures occurring due to a traumatic injury, a surgical event, or an underlying pathology that results in severe patient hemodynamic instability. Hence, continuous monitoring of fundamental cardiovascular hemodynamic parameters, such as heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, …
Over-Height Vehicle Impact Reduction On Bridges: A Case Study, Marc Alexander Hoffmann
Over-Height Vehicle Impact Reduction On Bridges: A Case Study, Marc Alexander Hoffmann
LSU Master's Theses
Over-height vehicle collisions are a growing concern as commercial vehicles, as well as their cargo, become taller. Engineers recognize the dangers of over-weight vehicles traveling on our bridges and are able to adequately predict the behavior of a bridge subjected to increased live loads. However, bridges are becoming more vulnerable to collisions from over-height vehicles. Not only are the time and place of over-height vehicle collisions difficult to predict, but also the exact response of the bridge subjected to the lateral impact force is difficult to predict.
Most states use early warning detection systems to alert over-height vehicles and/or crash …

Lyophilized Escherichia Coli-Based Cell-Free Systems For Robust, High-Density, Long-Term Storage, Mark Thomas Smith, Scott D. Berkheimer, Christopher J. Werner, Bradley Charles Bundy
Faculty Publications
Cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) is a versatile tool for rapid recombinant protein production and engineering. One drawback of cell-free technology is the necessity to store the major components—cell extracts and energy systems—below freezing in bulky aqueous solutions. Here we describe simple methods for lyophilizing extracts and preparing powdered energy systems for CFPS. These techniques allow for high-density storage of cell-free systems that are more robust against temperature and bacterial degradation. Our methods have the potential to decrease storage expenses, allow for longer shelf-life of cell extracts at room temperature, and enable durable portable protein production technologies.

Multitarget Joint Delay And Doppler Shift Estimation In Bistatic Passive Radar, Mohammed Rashid
Multitarget Joint Delay And Doppler Shift Estimation In Bistatic Passive Radar, Mohammed Rashid
LSU Master's Theses
Bistatic passive radar (BPR) system does not transmit any electromagnetic signal unlike the active radar, but employs an existing Illuminator of opportunity (IO) in the environment, for instance, a broadcast station, to detect and track the targets of interest. Therefore, a BPR system is comprised of two channels. One is the reference channel that collects only the IO signal, and the other is the surveillance channel which is used to capture the targets' reflected signals. When the IO signal reflected from multiple targets is captured in the surveillance channel (SC) then estimating the delays and Doppler shifts of all the …

Streamlined Extract Preparation For Escherichia Coli-Based Cell-Free Protein Synthesis By Sonication Or Bead Vortex Mixing, Prashanta Shrestha, Troy Michael Holland, Bradley Charles Bundy
Faculty Publications
Escherichia coli-based cell extract is a vital component of inexpensive and high-yielding cell-free protein synthesis reactions. However, effective preparation of E. coli cell extract is limited to high-pressure (French press-style or impinge-style) or bead mill homogenizers, which all require a significant capital investment. Here we report the viability of E. coli cell extract prepared using equipment that is both common to biotechnology laboratories and able to process small volume samples. Specifically, we assessed the low-capital-cost lysis techniques of: (i) sonication, (ii) bead vortex mixing, (iii) freeze-thaw cycling, and (iv) lysozyme …

Modeling And Simulation Of Particle-Particle Interaction In A Magnetophoretic Bio-Separation Chip, Manjurul Alam, Matin Golozar, Jeff Darabi
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
A Lagrangian particle trajectory model is developed to predict the interaction between cell-bead particle complexes and to track their trajectories in a magnetophoretic bio-separation chip. Magnetic flux gradients are simulated in OpenFOAM CFD software and imported into MATLAB to obtain the trapping lengths and trajectories of the particles. A connector vector is introduced to calculate the interaction force between cell-bead complexes as they flow through a microfluidic device. The interaction force calculations are performed for cases where the connector vector is parallel, perpendicular, and at an angle of 45 degrees with the applied magnetic field. The trajectories of the particles …

Mechanical And Physical Properties Of Fluorogypsum-Cement-Fly Ash Blends For Artificial Reef And Coastal Protection Structures, Yasser Bigdeli
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The State of Louisiana faces severe soil erosion along its coastlines. Coastal protection structures most commonly are made of limestone and concrete. However, in Louisiana, these materials are not widely available, which makes it significantly expensive to protect the coastlines and marine life. This study proposes to use locally available materials that have lower cost and lower density than limestone and concrete to reduce the economic burden of protecting and enhancing coastlines.
This study presents an extensive investigation of strength and durability properties of a low-cost concrete-like composite material made of pH-adjusted fluorogypsum (FG), class C fly ash (FA), and …

This study concerns development of a technology of utilizing metallic nanowires for a sensing element in nanofluidic single molecular (nanoparticle) sensors formed in plastic substrates to detect the translocation of single molecules through the nanochannel. We aimed to develop nanofluidic single molecular sensors in plastic substrates due to their scalability towards high through and low cost manufacturing for point-of-care applications. Despite significant research efforts recently on the technologies and applications of nanowires, using individual nanowires as electric sensing element in nanofluidic bioanalytic devices has not been realized yet. This dissertation work tackles several technical challenges involved in this development, which …

Thermogenic Gas Hydrate Formation In Gulf Of Mexico Offshore Environment- Results From Numerical Simulation, Sulav Dhakal
LSU Master's Theses
Development of civilization and the resulting quest for energy have led us to previously uncharted territory in exploration and production of fuel. As the demand continues to grow and conventional oil reserves become depleted, we are looking into unconventional resources such as gas hydrates. However, due to the volatile nature of the energy market and production technology yet to perfected, we are not able to fully utilize the potential of gas hydrates yet.
Reservoir characterization of hydrates have so far been limited to seismic mapping, well log interpretation and laboratory scale studies. This research uses numerical simulation to understand the …
1995 - Hydrogeology And Water Supply Of Salinas Valley, White Paper By Salinas Valley Ground Water Basin Hydrology Conference

Computational Discovery Of Energetic Polynitrogen Compounds At High Pressure, Brad A. Steele
Computational Discovery Of Energetic Polynitrogen Compounds At High Pressure, Brad A. Steele
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
High-nitrogen-content energetic compounds containing multiple N-N bonds are an attractive alternative towards developing new generation of environmentally friendly, and more powerful energetic materials. High-N content translates into much higher heat of formation resulting in much larger energy output, detonation pressure and velocity upon conversion to large amounts of non-toxic, strongly bonded N2 gas. This thesis describes recent advances in the computational discovery of group-I alkali and hydrogen polynitrogen materials at high pressures using powerful first-principles evolutionary crystal structure prediction methods. This is highlighted by the discovery of a new family of materials that consist of long-sought after all-nitrogen N 5 …

Characterization Of Mechanical Properties Of Battery Electrode Films From Acoustic Resonance Measurements, Kathryn L. Dallon, Jing Yao, Dean R. Wheeler, Brian Mazzeo
Faculty Publications
Measurements of the mechanical properties of lithium-ion battery electrode films can be used to quantify and improve manufacturing processes and to predict the mechanical and electrochemical performance of the battery. This paper demonstrates the use of acoustic resonances to distinguish among commercial-grade battery films with different active electrode materials, thicknesses, and densities. Resonances are excited in a clamped circular area of the film using a pulsed infrared laser, and responses are measured using an electret condenser microphone. A numerical model is used to quantify the sensitivity of resonances to changes in mechanical properties. When the numerical model is compared to …
Control Of Wave Energy Converters With Discrete Displacement Hydraulic Power Take-Off Units, Shangyan Zou, Ossama Abdelkhalik
Control Of Wave Energy Converters With Discrete Displacement Hydraulic Power Take-Off Units, Shangyan Zou, Ossama Abdelkhalik
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The control of ocean Wave Energy Converters (WECs) impacts the harvested energy. Several control methods have been developed over the past few decades to maximize the harvested energy. Many of these methods were developed based on an unconstrained dynamic model assuming an ideal power take-off (PTO) unit. This study presents numerical tests and comparisons of a few recently developed control methods. The testing is conducted using a numerical simulator that simulates a hydraulic PTO. The PTO imposes constraints on the maximum attainable control force and maximum stroke. In addition, the PTO has its own dynamics, which may impact the performance …
