Active Permanent Magnet Attitude Control For Cubesats Using Mu-Metal Shielding, Maxwell Martin
Active Permanent Magnet Attitude Control For Cubesats Using Mu-Metal Shielding, Maxwell Martin
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Cube-Satellites (CubeSats) are nanosatellites composed of cube shaped units, each nominally 10cm to a side and around 1kg in mass. Due to their inherent size and weight limitations, it is often impractical to use conventional attitude, or rotational, control methods such as thrusters on these small satellites. Several methods, including magnetorquer rods and small reaction wheels, are often used instead of traditional methods to work around the size and weight limitations. As a new alternative to these methods, a permanent magnet mounted on a rotatable shaft could be used to achieve attitude control. In much the same way that a …
Phase Field Model Of Thermally Induced Phase Separation (Tips) For The Formation Of Porous Polymer Membranes, Ashley Green, Aria Green
Phase Field Model Of Thermally Induced Phase Separation (Tips) For The Formation Of Porous Polymer Membranes, Ashley Green, Aria Green
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Most membrane research and development has been done through experimental work, which can be costly and time consuming. An accurate computational model would greatly reduce the need for these experiments. The focus of the research presented in this paper is to create an accurate computational model for membrane formation using thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). A phase field model is employed to create this model including the Cahn Hilliard Equation and Flory Huggins Theory. This model produced computational results that correspond well with theoretical and experimental results. The model was then adapted to correspond to the PVDF/DPC polymer-solvent system by …

K-Means: A Revisit, Wan-Lei Zhao, Cheng-Hao Deng, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Due to its simplicity and versatility, k-means remains popular since it was proposed three decades ago. The performance of k-means has been enhanced from different perspectives over the years. Unfortunately, a good trade-off between quality and efficiency is hardly reached. In this paper, a novel k-means variant is presented. Different from most of k-means variants, the clustering procedure is driven by an explicit objective function, which is feasible for the whole l(2)-space. The classic egg-chicken loop in k-means has been simplified to a pure stochastic optimization procedure. The procedure of k-means becomes simpler and converges to a considerably better local …
Mitochondrial Mrna Translation Is Required For Maintenance Of Oxidative Capacity, David Lee
Mitochondrial Mrna Translation Is Required For Maintenance Of Oxidative Capacity, David Lee
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Oxidative metabolism is required to produce adequate energy to sustain human life. A primary example of deteriorating oxidative capacity is seen in the cardiac musculature during chronic heart failure. This suggests that by improving oxidative potential, chronic heart disease could be mitigated and one approach to accomplish this may be through targeting the mt-mRNA translation system. Purpose: This investigation’s purpose was to characterize disruptions in mt-mRNA translation machinery in multiple forms of cardiomyopathy and to determine if mitochondrial mRNA translation initiation factor (mtIF2) is necessary to maintain oxidative capacity in cardiomyocytes. Methods Using a combination of animal and cell culture …

Analyzing Requirements And Traceability Information To Improve Bug Localization, Michael Rath, David Lo, Patrick Mader
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Locating bugs in industry-size software systems is time consuming and challenging. An automated approach for assisting the process of tracing from bug descriptions to relevant source code benefits developers. A large body of previous work aims to address this problem and demonstrates considerable achievements. Most existing approaches focus on the key challenge of improving techniques based on textual similarity to identify relevant files. However, there exists a lexical gap between the natural language used to formulate bug reports and the formal source code and its comments. To bridge this gap, state-of-the-art approaches contain a component for analyzing bug history information …

Hydrothermal Pre-Treatment Process Of Phosphogypsum For Enhanced Rare Earths Recovery, Volha Yahorava, Eugene Lakay, Wilma Clark
Beneficiation of Phosphates VIII
Phosphogypsum (PG) is an industrial waste of phosphoric acid (H3PO4) production from phosphate ore by sulphuric acid (H2SO4) digestion, commonly known as the “wet acid” process. Phosphate rock often contains some valuable rare earth elements (REE) and it is well-established that from 70% to 85% of REE originally present in the phosphate rock end up in the PG, with an average REE content of ~0.4 wt. % [1-4]. PG is considered to be an attractive secondary resource of REE. However, processes available currently for REE recovery are often very expensive, sometimes impractical, …

Holding Pattern: An Analysis Of Heathrow Airport’S Capacity Quandary, Dudley G. Oscar
Holding Pattern: An Analysis Of Heathrow Airport’S Capacity Quandary, Dudley G. Oscar
Honors Program Theses and Projects
One of the most contentious topics of discussion in Aviation today revolves around what many describe as the “overcrowding” of Heathrow Airport in London. Operating at over 99% capacity between its only 2 runways, Heathrow is the world’s busiest airport, a title which it has had difficulty taking pride in due to its implications (“Airport Capacity in London,” 2013). This has also been an ordeal for passengers navigating through the airport and experiencing the often absurdly long delays as aircraft are kept in holding patterns over the congested airport waiting to land, but also for airlines that have had to …

Atlanta Traffic Optimization Final Design Review, Biram Nicol, Vick Abwavo, Brandon Harris
Senior Design Project For Engineers
To solve the Metro-Atlanta traffic problem, we have embarked in numerous efforts to find feasible goals that had worked in other states with similar situations. In dealing with the traffic problem around the Metro area, we have designed a rail system to counter if our proposed idea of eliminating trucks within the Metro area is realized. This will be a more cost-effective area as the rail system is set to pay for itself after a decade and half of operation.
This idea might be considered radical, but our findings showed that 39.50% of freight is transferred by rail according to …

Nanotechnology has significant economic, health, and environmental benefits, including renewable energy and innovative environmental solutions. Manufactured nanoparticles have been incorporated into new materials and products because of their novel or enhanced properties. These very same properties also have prompted concerns about the potential environmental and human health hazard and risk posed by the manufactured nanomaterials. Appropriate risk management responses require the development of models capable of predicting the environmental and human health effects of the nanomaterials. Development of predictive models has been hampered by a lack of information concerning the environmental fate, behavior and effects of manufactured nanoparticles. The United …

Horticulture Faculty Publications
Chemical genetics is increasingly being employed to decode traits in plants that may be recalcitrant to traditional genetics due to gene redundancy or lethality. However, the probability of a synthetic small molecule being bioactive is low; therefore, thousands of molecules must be tested in order to find those of interest. Liquid handling robotics systems are designed to handle large numbers of samples, increasing the speed with which a chemical library can be screened in addition to minimizing/standardizing error. To achieve a high-throughput forward chemical genetics screen of a library of 50,000 small molecules on Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis), protocols using a …

Sole active mining phosphate operation in European Union (EU) is in Finland Siilinjärvi with limited resources available for approximately next 20-30 years [1]. In this context it is important that Estonia holds the largest unused sedimentary phosphate rock reserve in EU. Estonian phosphate is a sedimentary rock composed of variegated sandstone that contains abundant remains (detritus) of (biogenic) phosphatic brachiopod shells [2]. Phosphate enriched beds occur stratigraphically at the transition between Cambrian and Ordovician and the phosphatic sandstones belong to Kallavere formation. The biogenic phosphate is dominated by francolite mineral phase. The P2O5 content of the sandstone beds is quite …
