Radio-Frequency Transmitter Geolocation Using Non-Ideal Received Signal Strength Indicators, Samuel Whiting
Radio-Frequency Transmitter Geolocation Using Non-Ideal Received Signal Strength Indicators, Samuel Whiting
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Locating a radio transmitter is important in a number of problems such as finding radio tags, people with radios, and devices that are collecting information in an unauthorized manner. Locating a radio transmitter is inherently difficult because the radio waves of concern are not in the visible spectrum, they reflect and distort easily, and they propagate at the speed of light.
A number of methods for locating transmitters are currently used, the majority of which require expensive hardware and extensive processing. This thesis presents a method of using simpler measurements to produce similar location estimates in order to augment or …
The Effects Of Surge Flows On Residential Water Meters, Ryan P. Weller
The Effects Of Surge Flows On Residential Water Meters, Ryan P. Weller
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
All residential water meters have published flow rates for which they will operate as designed. These specifications include a maximum operating flow rate, which is recommended not to exceed. However, there are situations which may cause a meter to flow above the maximum flow rate. This thesis explores what effect these surge flows have on residential water meters.
Twenty-one 5/8”x3/4” meters were tested in this study: three oscillating pistons, six nutating disks, nine ultrasonic, and three electromagnetic. Testing was done at the Utah Water Research Laboratory using a gravimetric test bench specifically designed for residential water meter testing.
The results …
Importance Of Exposure Time On Digital Image Correlation (Dic) At Extreme Temperatures, Thinh Quang Thai
Importance Of Exposure Time On Digital Image Correlation (Dic) At Extreme Temperatures, Thinh Quang Thai
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Extreme temperatures have increasingly played an important role in engineering applications, including leading edges during hypersonic flight, spacecraft re-entry, and propulsion systems. In order to design for such thermo-mechanical conditions, materials must be characterized using suitable measurement methods. DIC is a popular and versatile method in full-field measurement. In brief, DIC compares images of a sample between its undeformed and deformed state in order to get displacement and strain field maps. Since the images are acquired from digital cameras, it is important to have high contrast images for meaningful correlation. Exposure time is a pivotal camera setting relating to camera …

Effects Of Gsk101 Exposure On Astrocyte Mechanical Properties, Collagen Production, And Viability, Ethan Echols
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4) is a cation channel protein which is thought to facilitate extracellular matrix (ECM) modification and glial scar formation following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Activation of TRPV4 has been shown to correlate with an increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration. TRPV4 is subject to both chemical and mechanical activation. This study involved chemical activation of TRPV4 in cultured mouse astrocytes using GSK101, the primary agonist of TRPV4, and subsequent evaluation of mechanical and chemical changes to the ECM. Prior to GSK101 exposure, the cells were seeded into Matrigel Matrix, a gelatinous protein mixture intended to …
The Effect Of Elastin Degradation On The Biomechanical Properties Of Porcine Aortic Tissue, Caleb Nissen
The Effect Of Elastin Degradation On The Biomechanical Properties Of Porcine Aortic Tissue, Caleb Nissen
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) is currently the 13th leading cause of death in the United States [1]. AAA is characterized, in part, by an increase in presence of proteolytic enzymes which degrade the structural proteins collagen and elastin [6]. The goal of this study was to examine the effect that elastin degradation has on the biomechanical properties of aortic tissue. For this experiment, porcine aortic tissue was cut in the circumferential and longitudinal directions. These specimens were exposed to an elastase solution for varying time-intervals and then underwent uniaxial tensile testing. Elastase-treated tissue tested in the …
Extraction And Analysis Of Vector Flow Imaging Data In A Pediatric Population, Bailey Stinnett
Extraction And Analysis Of Vector Flow Imaging Data In A Pediatric Population, Bailey Stinnett
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Vector flow imaging (VFI) is a new ultrasound technology that provides real time, angle-independent visualization of flow velocities in the heart and great vessels. Thus far, VFI has been used for superficial applications due to the limited penetration depth of available transducer probes; however, this depth in smaller pediatric patients enables adequate aortic views. In this project, VFI was used to study pediatric aortic stenosis (PAS)—a congenital heart defect that results in the narrowing of the aorta and/or aortic valve. The decision to refer PAS patients for surgical or catheter-based intervention is initially based on Doppler ultrasound. VFI is potentially …
Analysis Of Biological Response To Ecm Hydrogel Injection, Grady Dunlap
Analysis Of Biological Response To Ecm Hydrogel Injection, Grady Dunlap
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Abstract
Under normal circumstances, skeletal muscle possesses the capacity to regenerate and heal via inflammatory and myogenic pathways. In cases of severe tissue loss or certain diseases, this capacity is lost, often resulting in loss of tissue function. Extracellular matrix (ECM), the protein scaffold which houses cells in physiological tissue, has been shown to have structural and chemical properties which influence cell migration and phenotype. This results in ECM’s capacity to encourage a regenerative response when implanted into severely damaged skeletal muscle. Additional advantages are apparent when an ECM scaffold is digested into a hydrogel, namely less invasive implantation via …

Theses and Dissertations
The Automatic speech recognition (ASR) system is one of most important technologies that used for human-machine interaction. The main goal of the ASR system is to recognize different natural languages that are spoken by humans. The difficulties of these recognition systems depend on many factors, such as noises, variability of the speakers, and problems of continuous speech. For that reason, many researchers and foundations have designed different kinds of licensed toolkits and software that are specialized in building speech recognition systems, including , Julius, Sphinx-4, RWTH ASR, and HTK toolkits. In this thesis, Kaldi toolkit, which is one of the …
Pollen Grains Recognition Based On Computer Vision Methods, Amar Idrees Daood
Pollen Grains Recognition Based On Computer Vision Methods, Amar Idrees Daood
Theses and Dissertations
The classification of pollen grains is a main task in many disciplines including ecology, forensic sciences, allergy control, and oil exploration. In these application areas, visual inspection is the common method used for classifying pollen. However, recognition by visual inspection consumes much time and effort. Even though some level of automation exists, the automatic recognition of pollen grains remains an open problem. Current pollen-classification solutions rely on measurements of visual cues such as contour or texture. However, these features do not capture the visual complexity of information needed for discriminating among various species of pollen, especially when both a large-scale …
Design And Optimization Of A Passive Magnetic Thrust Bearing, Thomas Matthew Lasko
Design And Optimization Of A Passive Magnetic Thrust Bearing, Thomas Matthew Lasko
Theses and Dissertations
High-speed turbomachines present a number of unique challenges and problems. Large centrifugal forces create high stresses in rotating components, friction leads to elevated temperatures and component failure, and rotordynamic instability makes control difficult. The weak link in these high-speed systems is often the bearings because they provide the interface between the rotating and stationary components. Traditional bearings often fail in these conditions, especially when relatively large force capacities are required. In miniature gas turbines for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications, traditional bearings exhibit a typical lifetime of only 25 hours due to excessive axial loading. This research presents a passive …
Development Of Recyclability Index: A Design For Assembly And Disassembly Approach, Darshan Yadav
Development Of Recyclability Index: A Design For Assembly And Disassembly Approach, Darshan Yadav
Theses and Dissertations
Designing products for recyclability is driven by environmental and economic goals. Several Design for Assembly(DFA) rules and parameters can be used to gauge the recyclability index of product designs. These indices can be used for comparative analysis of the recyclability of different products. This assists the designer in making design choices related to the product’s end of life. However, many of the existing recyclability indices are only available after design and manufacturing decisions are made. If such design decisions could be made earlier in the design process, when the design space is less bound, recyclability could be considered earlier. A …

Demonstrating Set-Based Design Techniques- A Uav Case Study, Colin Small
Demonstrating Set-Based Design Techniques- A Uav Case Study, Colin Small
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Department of Defense (DoD) and Engineered Resilient Systems (ERS) community seek to improve decision making in the Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) process by incorporating resilience and leveraging the capabilities of model-based engineering (MBE) early in the design process. Traditional tradespace exploration utilizing Point-Based Design (PBD) often converges quickly on a solution with subsequent engineering changes to modify the design. However, this process can lead to a suboptimal solution if an incorrect initial solution is chosen. Enabled by MBE, Set-Based Design (SBD) considers sets of all possible solutions and enables down-selecting possibilities to converge on a final solution. Using a …

A Multi-Objective Affinity-Based Savings Algorithm For Improving Processes In Centralized Warehousing Operations, Mckenlee M. Coco
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Traditional approaches to improving material management processes in warehousing operations tend to focus on one of three major areas: facility design, order picking and sorting, and order batching. In an effort to improve total system savings, a new affinity function is developed and applied to batching logic to create a multi-objective problem. The proposed multi-objective function incorporates user input to increase adaptability to changing demand and flexibility to changing requirements. Computational experience shows the new function leads to solutions that deviate no more than 25% from the most efficient distance based picking route by the same batching logic, while creating …

Phase Transitions In Monochalcogenide Monolayers, Mehrshad Mehboudi
Phase Transitions In Monochalcogenide Monolayers, Mehrshad Mehboudi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Since discovery of graphene in 2004 as a truly one-atom-thick material with extraordinary mechanical and electronic properties, researchers successfully predicted and synthesized many other two-dimensional materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and monochalcogenide monolayers (MMs). Graphene has a non-degenerate structural ground state that is key to its stability at room temperature. However, group IV monochalcogenides such as monolayers of SnSe, and GeSe have a fourfold degenerate ground state. This degeneracy in ground state can lead to structural instability, disorder, and phase transition in finite temperature. The energy that is required to overcome from one degenerate ground state to another …
Understanding The Evolution Of Surface Texture Under Boundary Lubrication, Salil T. Bapat
Understanding The Evolution Of Surface Texture Under Boundary Lubrication, Salil T. Bapat
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research was to understand the evolution of surface texture under boundary/mixed lubrication (BL). Significant material/energy losses occur during BL because of direct contact between the two surfaces. Traditionally, tribofilms have been studied extensively for BL while textures have been used as a static engineering design parameter to enhance lubricant film properties. However, texture is dynamic at the tribological mating interface, where both physical and chemical interactions are continuously modulated. The evolution and the interplay between the tribofilm and texture is least studied in the literature, which is the focus of this research.
MoS2-based lubricants, known for …

A Nanoindentation Study Of The Fatigue Properties Of Al/A-Si Core-Shell Nanostructures, Jason Steck
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Nanostructure-textured surfaces can reduce friction and increase the reliability of micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS/MEMS). For MEMS incorporating moving parts, the fatigue properties of nanostructures pose a challenge to their reliability in long-term applications. In this study, the fatigue behavior of hemispherical Al/a-Si core-shell nanostructures (CSNs), bare hemispherical Al nanodots, and a flat Al/a-Si layered thin film have been studied using nanoindentation and nano-scale dynamic mechanical analysis (nano-DMA) techniques. Fatigue testing with nano-DMA shows that the deformation resistance of CSNs persists through 5.0 × 104 loading cycles at estimated contact pressures greater than 15 GPa. When the a-Si shell …
