Experimental Investigation Of Enhanced Damage Resistant Fiber Metal Laminates, Cannelle Metang Tefoung
Experimental Investigation Of Enhanced Damage Resistant Fiber Metal Laminates, Cannelle Metang Tefoung
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) are hybrid composite structures made from fiber reinforced polymeric materials sandwiched between layers of thin metal alloy sheets. FMLs combine the advantages of metallic materials and fiber reinforced matrix systems. Some of these advantages include: lighter weight, enhanced impact tolerance, improved corrosion resistance, better fire resistance, longer fatigue life, greater tensile strength, easier repair ability and maintainability, etc. The most well-known commercially available FML is GLARE (Glass Laminate Aluminum Reinforced Epoxy), however there are ongoing issues, which include a very high fabrication cost compared to many competing material systems and substantial delamination upon impact and failure. …
Low-Fare Flights Across The Atlantic: Impact Of Low-Cost, Long-Haul, Trans-Atlantic Flights On Passenger Choice Of Carrier, Jennifer Nicole Hunt
Low-Fare Flights Across The Atlantic: Impact Of Low-Cost, Long-Haul, Trans-Atlantic Flights On Passenger Choice Of Carrier, Jennifer Nicole Hunt
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Full-service carriers (FSCs) have long ruled the trans-Atlantic market, due to the absence of low fare competition, which has kept airfares high. However, renewed interest in low-cost, long-haul (LCLH) flights was prompted by efficient aircraft, low fuel prices, liberalization of air markets, and low-cost carriers’ growth opportunities. Since 2013, multiple LCLH carriers have commenced trans-Atlantic operations, and their market share has grown to 8%. In response, FSCs are establishing their own LCLH subsidiaries and/or introducing basic economy airfares to more effectively compete in the trans-Atlantic market. The purpose of this dissertation was to further the understanding of LCLH and FSC …

Effect Of Incubation Temperature On Phosphorous Release From Soils To Water, Seth Boles
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
In recent years, nutrient release into flood waters and runoff has been a major concern within the Illinois River watershed, as well as nationwide. This study investigated whether there was a change in the release rate of soluble reactive phosphorous (SRP) into overlying water from soil cores incubated at different temperatures. Soil cores were incubated at 4.4°C, 20°C, and 32°C. After inundation, water samples were taken periodically over a seven-hour period and SRP measured. Following the drainage of the water, the upper 5 cm soil from each core was dried and analyzed for Mehlich III-extractable and water-extractable P. The results …

Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The use of nanoparticles (NPs) has increased exponentially in the last 15-20 years, especially in the consumer market. NPs are currently found in over 1800 commercial products, including cosmetics, clothing, packaging, and toys. As a result, NPs can enter the environment via wastewater (WW) streams, leading to new challenges in WW treatment. This study focuses on the initial fate of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in WW. The AgNP interaction including aggregation and dissolution in both synthetic and real WW were studied. Real WW was collected from the primary-clarifier, secondary-clarifier, and effluent WW streams at two local WW treatment plants (Westside and …
Optimizing Genetic Manipulation Of Methanogens Through Faster Cloning Techniques, Merrisa Jennings
Optimizing Genetic Manipulation Of Methanogens Through Faster Cloning Techniques, Merrisa Jennings
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Methanogenesis is the biological production of methane. Only anaerobic archaea known as methanogens are capable of such a metabolic feat. They have strict living conditions and substrate sources which determine their rate of metabolism. This is of particular importance from a greenhouse gas reduction perspective or biogas capturing perspective. One of the best ways to optimize methanogen methane production is via genetic manipulation. The current procedures are timely though, therefore a faster cloning processes should be developed. The objective of this study was to optimize a premade genetic transformation kit known as the Gibson Kit. The Gibson Kit was supposed …

Chloride Salt Inhibition On Lipid Production In Wastewater-Grown Algae For Biofuel Production, Will Richardson
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Algae are increasingly being recognized as useful organisms for many applications in today’s world. Their ability to remove nitrogen, phosphorus, and trace metals from water while adding oxygen to water makes them an attractive tertiary treatment technology in municipal wastewater treatment facilities. At the same time, algae produce lipids and carbohydrates that are useful for biofuel production, and they are not a human food crop unlike many biofuel feedstocks. In this study the effect of increased chloride concentrations in wastewater was assessed on the ability of two species of algae, Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus dimorphus, to function as a …
Assessing Auto-Flocculation Of Microalgae In Wastewater Treatment, Alexander Parr
Assessing Auto-Flocculation Of Microalgae In Wastewater Treatment, Alexander Parr
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Biofuels produced from algae have the prospect to provide a cheap, carbon neutral alternative to fossil fuels. However, the high cost for harvesting algae limits its wide application, as the preferred algae strains for biofuel production are typically unicellular microalgae that do not settle in water very well. Recently, researchers have been focusing on developing a biological method to achieve the sedimentation of algae through flocculation. A recent study has concluded that introducing microalgae that self-flocculates increases the recovery of the desired microalgae, similar to the effect of using coagulant to flocculate the algae. This option can potentially be more …

In-Cage Surface Wetting System For Cooling Poultry In Transport, Ryan Clark
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Abstract
Poultry health and mortality rates are important considerations in poultry production, as companies can minimize product loss and appeal to a consumer base whose concern for animal welfare continues to grow. Although animal welfare is a consideration for the entire poultry production process, this project focuses on the live-haul phase of the process, specifically during transport from grow houses to processing facilities. During the summer months, broiler chickens being transported can suffer from heat stress that can lead to death. This project consists of the designing and testing of an in-cage surface wetting system to minimize heat stress incidents …

Optically Active Dye-Based Systems Templated By Dna Exhibiting Excitonic Delocalization, Brittany Lynn Cannon
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The concept of quantum computing was first developed in the early 1980’s. The attraction of quantum computers is their potential capacity to solve extremely complex problems, such as factorization, on a timescale far faster than that of classical computers. However, realization of quantum computation is currently in its infancy, and recent implementations possess serious drawbacks that reduce their appeal. Some challenges of current designs include the necessity to cool the systems using liquid helium to near absolute zero temperatures (15 mK) in order to maintain sufficiently long-lifetimes of the Qbits (i.e., unit of quantum information), difficulty with scaling up the …

Pid Algorithm Design For Automation Of Eukaryote Fermentation, Madison Mann
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Single celled eukaryotic organisms are advantageous in the production of proteins for use in biopharmaceuticals due to their ease of cultivation and manipulation. Because of high cell density during fermentation and an ability to allow post-translational protein modifications, yeast is particularly well-suited. To maximize the specific formation rate of the desired proteins, an optimum specific growth rate of the yeast should be found and maintained. This rate is dependent upon pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen content, and carbon feed rate. Fermentation can be done in a fed batch reactor system, and it is possible to use a Buglab (online biomss) sensor …

Sulfate Removal From Mine Impacted Waters, Luis Sagarnaga
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Woo Pig Sulfate (WPS) has developed two methods for reducing levels of calcium sulfate in mine impacted waters, a “hot process” and a two-stage nanofiltration process. Both processes were designed to treat gypsum saturated water that is currently being pumped via interceptor wells to prevent the spread of a sulfate plume into a nearby community. Each solution was designed for Freeport McMoran’s Sierrita mine in Green Valley, Arizona, which was visited in order to gain insight about the problem. Below 250 ppm on the treated stream, nanofiltration and the hot process achieve overall recoveries of 84 and 99%, respectively. The …

Many chemotherapeutic drugs are small, hydrophobic molecules that require water-soluble, biocompatible nanocarriers for enhanced vascular circulation. Existing polymeric carriers either conjugate the drug along a copolymer backbone or sequester drugs within a protected interior domain to be delivered to specific sites in the body. Such therapeutic systems must overcome a myriad of hurdles, beginning with complex, multi-step syntheses, followed by other inherent barriers that limit the efficiency of drug delivery at the targeted site. This work aims to circumvent a number of these issues using biocompatible, stimuli-responsive polysoaps that are capable of unimeric micelle formation, hydrophobic drug delivery, and triggered …
