Simulation Of Radiation Flux From Thermal Fluid In Origami Tubes, Robert R. Bebeau
Simulation Of Radiation Flux From Thermal Fluid In Origami Tubes, Robert R. Bebeau
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Spacecraft in orbit experience temperature swings close to 240 K as the craft passes from the shadow of the Earth into direct sunlight. To regulate the craft’s internal energy, large radiators eject unwanted energy into space using radiation transfer. The amount of radiation emitted is directly related to the topology of the radiator design. Deformable structures such as those made with origami tessellation patterns offer a mechanism to control the quantity of energy being emitted by varying the radiator shape. Three such patterns, the Waterbomb, Huffman Waterbomb, and Huffman Stars-Triangles, can be folded into tubes. Origami tubes offer greater control …
Evaluation Of Processing Variables In Polymer Projection Sintering, Justin Nussbaum, Nathan B. Crane
Evaluation Of Processing Variables In Polymer Projection Sintering, Justin Nussbaum, Nathan B. Crane
Faculty Publications
Purpose – Projection sintering, a system for selectively sintering large areas of polymer powder simultaneously with a high power projector is introduced. The paper evaluates the suitability of laser sintering process parameters for projection sintering as it uses substantially lower intensities, longer exposure times, and larger areas than conventional laser sintering (LS).
Design/methodology/approach – The tradeoffs in sintering outcomes are evaluated by creating single layer components with varied exposure times and optical intensities. Some of these components were cross-sectioned and evaluated for degree of densification while the single layer thickness and the maximum tensile force was measured for the rest. …
A Swing Generator Using Water Power Produced By The Wind, Ruka Ozaki
A Swing Generator Using Water Power Produced By The Wind, Ruka Ozaki
The International Student Science Fair 2018
I focus on various kinds of natural energy sources, especially wind. Wind power generation is the most-used method of electricity generation using wind power. Wind power generation has many merits; it achieves high efficiency of electric power generation, it can generate electricity even during the night, it doesn’t make any hazardous materials. However, there are not only merits but also demerits. It can cause bird strike, environment disruption from noise and low-frequency wave. And besides, we must comply building laws when we build wind power generators. Thus I built ‘a swing generator using water power produced by the wind power’, …

Seismic Vulnerability Assessment Of Buildings Using A Statistical Method Of Response Prediction, Ershad Ziaei, Amir Safiey, Weichiang Pang, Keivan Rokneddin, Mohammad Javanbarg, Mengzhe Gu
Publications
The seismic vulnerability functions for portfolio-level loss estimation are typically developed for general classes of buildings which may not be suitable to assess building-specific risks. Performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) provides the means to conduct building-specific seismic risk assessments. However, such assessments often rely on computationally-intensive analytical frameworks such as incremental dynamics analysis (IDA) which poses a challenge for many types of risk assessment projects. To expand its accessibility, FEMA P-58 outlines a simplified method to predict the nonlinear responses of buildings in which the scope is limited to lower levels of inter-story drifts (less than 4%). This limitation restricts its …

Influence Of Irreparability Fragility On Seismic Vulnerability Assessment Of Buildings, Amir Safiey, Ershad Ziaei, Mengzhe Gu, Weichiang Pang, Keivan Rokneddin, Mohammad Javanbarg
Publications
The probability that a building is sanctioned to demolition following an earthquake depends on several geotechnical, structural, strategic and financial decision variables. This paper explores the literature on post-earthquake reparability assessment of buildings focusing on structural characteristics and evaluates their approaches for four midrise code-compliant structural systems, namely, steel moment frame, reinforced concrete moment frame, light frame wood, and steel braced frame. The structural responses are estimated using incremental dynamics analysis (IDA) in accordance with FEMA P-695 provisions and the IDA results are relayed to a building-specific loss assessment framework to estimate their seismic vulnerability in terms of monetary losses. …
Effects Of Body Temperature And General Anesthetics On Intraocular Pressure In Rats, Aditi Pillai
Effects Of Body Temperature And General Anesthetics On Intraocular Pressure In Rats, Aditi Pillai
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Ocular hypertension has been identified as the fundamental risk factor in glaucoma which is the leading cause for irreversible blindness in the world. Understanding the different factors that affect IOP is of utmost importance in clinical management as IOP is considered as the fundamental factor in assessing the efficiency of glaucoma medications. Several studies have attempted to assess factors that could affect IOP including age, body position, blood pressure, anesthetics commonly used during eye operations, etc. However, in most of these studies IOP is measured under anesthesia using rodent models and these anesthetics could affect the IOP measurements directly or …

Weighting Function Effects In A Direct Regularization Method For Image-Guided Near-Infrared Spectral Tomography Of Breast Cancer., Jinchao Feng, Shudong Jiang, Brian W. Pogue, Keith Paulsen
Dartmouth Scholarship
Structural image-guided near-infrared spectral tomography (NIRST) has been developed as a way to use diffuse NIR spectroscopy within the context of image-guided quantification of tissue spectral features. A direct regularization imaging (DRI) method for NIRST has the value of not requiring any image segmentation. Here, we present a comprehensive investigational study to analyze the impact of the weighting function implied when weighting the recovery of optical coefficients in DRI based NIRST. This was done using simulations, phantom and clinical patient exam data. Simulations where the true object is known indicate that changes to this weighting function can vary the contrast …
Sr Flip-Flop Based Physically Unclonable Function (Puf) For Hardware Security, Rohith Prasad Challa
Sr Flip-Flop Based Physically Unclonable Function (Puf) For Hardware Security, Rohith Prasad Challa
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) are now widely being used to uniquely identify Integrated Circuits (ICs). In this work, we propose a novel Set-Reset (SR) Flip-flop based PUF design. For a NAND gate based SR flip-flop, the input condition S (Set) = 1 and R (Reset) = 1 must be avoided as it is an inconsistent condition. When S=R=1 is applied followed by S=R=0, then the outputs Q and Q' undergo race condition and depending on the delays of the NAND gates in the feedback path, the output Q can settle at either 0 or 1. Because of process variations in …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this work, chromium, copper, nickel, and yttrium-doped 3D-printed ZSM-5 monoliths were synthesized by doping the ZSM-5 zeolite paste with corresponding metal precursors. The physical and acid properties of the metal-doped 3D-printed ZSM-5 monoliths were systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR), N2 adsorption, temperature programmed reduction of H2(H2-TPR), and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD) techniques. The characterization of bare and metal-doped monoliths confirmed the presence of metal promoters within the zeolite matrix while their MFI frameworks were retained after doping and printing. It …

Force plates for human movement analysis provide accurate measurements when mounted rigidly on an inertial reference frame. Large measurement errors occur, however, when the force plate is accelerated, or tilted relative to gravity. This prohibits the use of force plates in human perturbation studies with controlled surface movements, or in conditions where the foundation is moving or not sufficiently rigid. Here we present a linear model to predict the inertial and gravitational artifacts using accelerometer signals. The model is first calibrated with data collected from random movements of the unloaded system and then used to compensate for the errors in …
Wave Attenuation By Constructed Oyster Reef Breakwaters, Jason M. Chauvin
Wave Attenuation By Constructed Oyster Reef Breakwaters, Jason M. Chauvin
LSU Master's Theses
Biloxi Marsh, located along the shoreline of Eloi Bay in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana has experienced significant shoreline erosion in recent years. The Living Shoreline Demonstration Project, completed in November 2016, constructed three miles of living shoreline structures to attenuate waves and thus combat marsh edge erosion along the shoreline of Eloi Bay. Several types of constructed oyster reef breakwaters were installed for this demonstration project. Due to the experimental nature of these products, available performance characteristics are limited.
This research measures wave attenuation across the constructed oyster reef breakwaters using bottom-mounted pressure gauges. Seven pressure gauges were deployed to …

Data and artificial intelligence (AI) are revolutionising the way customers interface with organisations and vice versa. However, there is limited knowledge regarding how data and AI are used as material during the design process. It is to this practice- research gap that this paper responds, by providing practical insight into a project between a Dutch airline, named AirlineX for the purpose of this paper, and a university-based design team. The project let to the development of a principle for personality-driven design that deeply personalises digital touchpoints within AirlineX’s operations. This principle is informed by ‘big five’ personality theory from the …
Hydraulic Performance And Vulnerability On Sanitary Sewer Overflow In Southern Pinellas County, Fl, Uchechi O. Akabogu
Hydraulic Performance And Vulnerability On Sanitary Sewer Overflow In Southern Pinellas County, Fl, Uchechi O. Akabogu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Rain-induced sanitary sewer overflow due to high infiltration is a significant challenge for many utilities, including Pinellas County utilities. The main aim of this study is to develop a hydraulic model to analyze the performance of the existing sanitary sewer system, especially during intense rainfall events.
To calculate the flow inputs for the model, a times series analysis was performed to separate the inflow and infiltration from the actual sewer flow. Using the Stevens-Schutzbach method, daily Base Infiltration (BI) was calculated and was subtracted from the total observed flow to give the Dry Weather Flow (DWF). Adjusting the DWF by …

An increase in the number of small quadrotors has created the interest in having performance data on the propellers used by these aircraft. With an aircraft size less than 5 in and propellers diameters less than 3 in, these quadrotors are typically referred to mini, micro, or nano by hobbyists and manufacturers. The size of the propellers used on these aircraft operate at low Reynolds numbers that are typically less than 50,000 for diameters up to 3 in and less than 20,000 for diameters up to 2 in. Static performance testing of the propellers used on 11 small quadrotors was …

Feco2o4 As An Anode Material For Lithium Ion Batteries, Chelsea Wong
The International Student Science Fair 2018
Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are commonly found in many portable electronic appliances due to their ability to be rechargeable. Currently, commercial anodes in Li-ion batteries (graphite) have a theoretical capacity of around 372 mAh/g, while FeCo2O4 that will be investigated as the anode material has a theoretical capacity of 901.985mAh/g, more than double of the current commercial anode’s capacity. Earlier work done by Sharma et al also showed that FeCo2O4 has a very promising initial capacity of 827mAh/g. As such, the engineering goal is to produce a battery that will have a higher capacity than the current commercial Li-ion batteries …

Thermal Barrier Coatings V
A set of analytical solutions has been obtained related to crack growth along the boundary of a layer adjusting to another layer or half-plane. In particular, for the second Dundur’s parameter vanishing the exact analytical solutions have been obtained for the two particular cases:
- semi-infinite crack separating two layers of equal thickness;
- semi-infinite crack separating a layers from a half-plane.
Two modes of stress intensity factors (SIFs) were obtained in terms of three force parameters: the total moment and two components (normal and shear) of the total force of stresses acting on the continuation of the crack line. …

Thermal Barrier Coatings V
The beneficial effect of Pt on the durability of aluminide coatings subjected to thermal cycling was studied by first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, thermal physical analysis, atom diffusion simulation and mechanics-based modeling. This presentation will highlight these analytical approaches and research findings in three subject areas. First, the effect of doping elements (S, Pt, Cr, Y, Zr, Hf) on work adhesion, Wad, of the β-NiAl coating/Al2O3 scale interface was investigated. S was found to significantly reduce, while Y, Zr and Hf to largely increase Wad of the interface, with Pt having a minimal …

Microstructural Characterization Of Shear Transformation Zones And Modeling Indentation Size Effect In Amorphous Polymers, Leila Malekmotiei
Microstructural Characterization Of Shear Transformation Zones And Modeling Indentation Size Effect In Amorphous Polymers, Leila Malekmotiei
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The first aim of this work is developing a procedure for experimental and analytical characterization of nano-scale microstructures which mediate large scale deformation in amorphous polymers. Glassy polymers are extensively used as high impact resistant, low density, and clear materials in industries. Nevertheless, their response under severe loading conditions is yet to be appropriately unraveled. Due to the lack of long-range order in the microstructures of glassy solids, their plastic deformation is different from that in crystalline solids. Shear Transformation Zones (STZs) are believed to be the main plasticity carriers in amorphous solids and defined as the localized atomic or …

Lean approaches to continuous improvement, originally practiced and perfected by Toyota Motor Company, have been widely used in the industry sector for many decades. There is a growing trend at universities to adopt lean practices to improve higher education processes. Reduced financial support and growing competition amongst universities and academic programs motivate the implementation of lean practices both at university and department levels.1 Colleges and universities that have adopted lean practices are driven by the need to strategically leverage resources to meet stakeholder expectations, reduce waste or costs, and improve satisfaction with under-performing processes.2 This paper presents an overview of …

Developing An Evaluation Tool To Examine Motivational Factors Of Non-Student Community Partnership Participants, Julia Thompson, Jinny Rhee
Faculty Publications, Mechanical Engineering
Research of engineering community engagement has primarily focused on the experiences and outcomes of students, yet it is often the faculty, administrators, and community partners who have a long-term commitment to the program’s success. In this study, we are developing and validating an assessment instrument that combines two previously identified aspects of community engagement programs: participant motivation and the nature of engagement relationships. Participant motivation refers to the reasons people stay engaged in the community engagement experience and can be categorized into: student learning and growth, personal and professional development, and benefits to the community organization. The nature of an …

Alumni Grassroots Leadership Enables Sponsored Course Development, Vladimir I. Prodanov, John Greene
Electrical Engineering
This paper presents a lab-centric course development where alumni, employed by an IAB member company, play a pivotal role. Recently the lead author of this paper qualified for a sabbatical leave and the college enthusiastically approved the proposal (a 400-level elective in networked sensors). He considered two class structures: lecture-only and lecture-lab. While lecture-lab is the desired mode of instruction, the development of such a course would take at least 2 quarters. Since extended sabbaticals are only partly funded by the university the creation of a lecture-lab course hinged on the availability of a sponsor. Simultaneously an alumnus, now with …
