Sulfate Free Solutions For Personal Care Applications, Prabhjyot Singh
Sulfate Free Solutions For Personal Care Applications, Prabhjyot Singh
Advances in Cosmetic Formulation Design [2018]
The personal care market is driven by consumer needs, where natural ingredients, safety awareness and free- from claims are main drivers. Free-from claims are continuing to grow and sulfate-free is a leading claim for this trend, particularly in the shampoo and body wash market. Sulfate-free cleansers are growing more than 8% CAGR. Sulfate- free surfactants present many challenges in product performance in comparison to sulfates, mainly in providing efficient thickening and desirable sensory and lather performance. Another challenge is to meet the crucial needs of the formulator by providing ingredients that are sustainable, able to be cold processed and delivered …

Novel High-Performance Ingredients Based On Functionalized Polysaccharides – The Role Of Enzymatic Catalysis., Stefan Ulvenlund
Advances in Cosmetic Formulation Design [2018]
Polysaccharides are interesting starting materials in the design of high-performance cosmetic ingredients, not only because of their generally low toxicity and “green” profile, but also because of their wide and exciting propensity to form complex self-aggregated structures. These structures have direct relevance for formulation science, since they provide us with the means to tailor and optimize rheological characteristics, solubilization efficiency, emulsification and other critical attributes of a formulation. However, in order to fully exploit this potential of polysaccharide-based materials we need not only the ability to extract, purify and refine them on an industrial scale. We also need cost-efficient tools …

Up to 30 mol% of acrylic acid (AAc) was incorporated into a pH responsive smart adhesive consisting of dopamine methacrylamide (DMA) and 3-acrylamido phenylboronic acid (APBA). FTIR spectroscopy and rheometry confirmed that the incorporation of AAc shifted the pH of catechol-boronate complexation to a more basic pH. Correspondingly, adhesive formulations with elevated AAc contents demonstrated strong adhesion to quartz substrate at a neutral to mildly basic pH (pH 7.5-8.5) based on Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) contact mechanics test. When pH was further increased to pH 9.0, there was a drastic reduction in the measured work of adhesion (18 and 7 fold reduction …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
SRAM-based PUFs (SPUFs) have emerged as promising security primitives for low-power devices. However, operating 8T-SPUFs at Near-Threshold Computing (NTC) realm is plagued by exacerbated process variation (PV) sensitivity which thwarts their reliable operation. In this paper, we demonstrate the massive degradation in the reliability and uniformity characteristics of 8T-SPUF. By exploiting the opportunities bestowed by schematic asymmetry of 8T-SPUF cells, we propose biasing and sizing based design strategies. Our techniques achieve an immense improvement of more than 55% in the percentage of unreliable cells and improves the proximity to ideal uniformity by 82%, over a baseline NTC 8T-SPUF with no …

Query-Constraint-Based Mining Of Association Rules For Exploratory Analysis Of Clinical Datasets In The National Sleep Research Resource, Rashmie Abeysinghe, Licong Cui
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Background: Association Rule Mining (ARM) has been widely used by biomedical researchers to perform exploratory data analysis and uncover potential relationships among variables in biomedical datasets. However, when biomedical datasets are high-dimensional, performing ARM on such datasets will yield a large number of rules, many of which may be uninteresting. Especially for imbalanced datasets, performing ARM directly would result in uninteresting rules that are dominated by certain variables that capture general characteristics.
Methods: We introduce a query-constraint-based ARM (QARM) approach for exploratory analysis of multiple, diverse clinical datasets in the National Sleep Research Resource (NSRR). QARM enables rule mining on …

Heat-Physical Calculation Of Constructions Of Building Foundations According To The Requirements Of Heat Protect Rate Of Buildings, E. Tulakov, Sh. Sirojiddinov
Problems of Architecture and Construction
Quite often, the foundations are combined with the walls of basements. Their reliable operation can be ensured only in the presence of thermal insulation of external structures in contact with the ground. The need for insulation is due to the fact that heat loss through the underground part of the building in some cases up to 20% of the total heat loss. In the presence of a heated basement, insulation will protect the walls of the basement from freezing, will help prevent condensation, dampness and mold development.

Some contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are known to survive conventional wastewater treatment, which introduces them back to the environment, allowing them to potentially cycle into drinking water. This is especially concerning because of the inherent ability of some CECs to induce physiological effects in humans at very low doses. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) such as TiO2-based photocatalysis are of great interest for addressing CECs in aqueous environments. Natural water resources often contain dissolved metal cation concentrations in excess of targeted CEC concentrations. These cations may significantly adversely impact the degradation of CECs by scavenging TiO2 surface generated electrons. Consequently, …

Fuel Flow Reduction Impact Analysis Of Drag Reducing Film Applied To Aircraft Wings, Damon Resnick, Chris Donlan, Nimish Sakalle, Cody Pinkerman
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present an analysis of flight data in order to determine whether the application of the Edge Aerodynamix Conformal Vortex Generator (CVG), applied to the wings of aircraft, reduces fuel flow during cruising conditions of flight. The CVG is a special treatment and film applied to the wings of an aircraft to protect the wings and reduce the non-laminar flow of air around the wings during flight. It is thought that by reducing the non-laminar flow or vortices around and directly behind the wings that an aircraft will move more smoothly through the air and provide a …

Phase Equilibrium Modelling And Implications For P-T Determinations Of Medium-Temperature Uhp Eclogites, North Qaidam Terrane, China, David Hernández‐Uribe, Chris G. Mattinson, Jianxin Zhang
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
In contrast to low-T eclogites (garnet growth zoning preserved) or high-T eclogites (garnet diffusionally homogenized at peak conditions), medium-temperature eclogites pose additional challenges to P-T determinations due to the partial preservation of garnet zoning. The Dulan area, in the southeastern part of North Qaidam ultrahigh-pressure terrane, exposes minor eclogites hosted by ortho- and paragneisses. Four fresh, medium-temperature eclogites contain the paragenesis Grt+Omp+Rt+Qz/Coe+Ph +/- Ky +/- Zo. In all samples, garnet X-Mg shows little zoning, suggesting diffusional modification, and precludes the use of pyrope+almandine+grossular isopleth intersections to determine a P-T path. However, in one sample, sharp zoning in grossular content suggests …

Rotational and oscillatory shear rheometry were used to quantify the flow behavior under minimal and significant solvent evaporation conditions for polymer solutions used to fabricate isoporous asymmetric membranes by the self-assembly and non-solvent induced phase separation (SNIPS) method. Three different A-B-C triblock terpolymer chemistries of similar molar mass were evaluated: polyisoprene-^-polystyrene-6-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (ISV); polyisoprene-6- polystyrene-6-poly(V,A-dimethylacrylamide) (ISD); and polyisoprene-Z>-polystyrene-h-poly(fer/- butyl methacrylate) (ISB). Solvent evaporation resulted in the formation of a viscoelastic film typical of asymmetric membranes. Solution viscosity and film viscoelasticity were strongly dependent on the chemical structure of the triblock terpolymer molecules. A hierarchical magnitude (ISV>ISB>ISD) was observed …

Stress-Assisted Corrosion Damage V
Light alloys allow us to have light components with interesting mechanical features. Ti-6Al-4V is a bimodal titanium alloy employed in aerospace, automotive, maritime and biomedical applications. This alloy has also a good corrosion strength which can be reduced by damages on the passivating surface layer. These damages can be due to an inadequate adhesion of the surface layer, variable loads and interactions with aggressive media [1,2].
For these reasons, quasi-static and fatigue tests on Ti-6Al-4V specimens in different inert, aggressive and very aggressive environments were carried out in the past. Air, air + beeswax coating, paraffin oil, 3.5wt.% NaCl-water solution …

Oxide-dispersed-strengthened (ODS) steel has excellent mechanical, thermodynamic and radiation resistant properties, which makes it an important candidate material for high-Temperature reactors applications. Radiation stability of oxide is very important to study at the atomic level. In present case molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is used to study stabilities of Y2O3 particles in ODS steel as a function of particle sizes. The size dependence is obvious for particle sizes larger than 2.8 nm. Furthermore, the stabilities depend on charges of Y and O atoms.
