Diverse Lignocellulosic Feedstocks Can Achieve High Field‐Scale Ethanol Yields While Providing Flexibility For The Biorefinery And Landscape‐Level Environmental Benefits, Yaoping Zhang, Lawrence G. Oates, Jose Serate, Dan Xie, Edward Pohlman, Yury Bukhman, Rebecca Garlock Ong, Et Al. Jul 2018

Diverse Lignocellulosic Feedstocks Can Achieve High Field‐Scale Ethanol Yields While Providing Flexibility For The Biorefinery And Landscape‐Level Environmental Benefits, Yaoping Zhang, Lawrence G. Oates, Jose Serate, Dan Xie, Edward Pohlman, Yury Bukhman, Rebecca Garlock Ong, Et Al.

Department of Chemical Engineering Publications

Increasing the diversity of lignocellulosic feedstocks accepted by a regional biorefinery has the potential to improve the environmental footprint of the facility; harvest, storage, and transportation logistics; and biorefinery economics. However, feedstocks can vary widely in terms of their biomass yields and quality characteristics (chemical composition, moisture content, etc.). To investigate how the diversity of potential biofuel cropping systems and feedstock supply might affect process and field‐scale ethanol yields, we processed and experimentally quantified ethanol production from five different herbaceous feedstocks: two annuals (corn stover and energy sorghum) and three perennials (switchgrass, miscanthus, and mixed prairie). The feedstocks werepretreated using ammonia …

Chaotic Phase-Coded Waveforms With Space-Time Complementary Coding For Mimo Radar Applications, Sheng Hong, Fuhui Zhou, Yantao Dong, Zhixin Zhao, Yuhao Wang, Maosong Yan Jul 2018

Chaotic Phase-Coded Waveforms With Space-Time Complementary Coding For Mimo Radar Applications, Sheng Hong, Fuhui Zhou, Yantao Dong, Zhixin Zhao, Yuhao Wang, Maosong Yan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A framework for designing orthogonal chaotic phase-coded waveforms with space-time complementary coding (STCC) is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar applications. The phase-coded waveform set to be transmitted is generated with an arbitrary family size and an arbitrary code length by using chaotic sequences. Due to the properties of chaos, this chaotic waveform set has many advantages in performance, such as anti-interference and low probability of intercept. However, it cannot be directly exploited due to the high range sidelobes, mutual interferences, and Doppler intolerance. In order to widely implement it in practice, we optimize the chaotic phase-coded waveform set from …

An Application Of Game Theory In Distributed Collaborative Decision Making, Angran Xiao Jul 2018

An Application Of Game Theory In Distributed Collaborative Decision Making, Angran Xiao

Publications and Research

In a distributed product realization environment, new paradigms and accompanying software systems are necessary to support the collaborative work of geographically dispersed engineering teams from different disciplines who have different knowledge, experience, tools and resources. To verify the concept of collaboration by separation, we propose a generic information communication medium to enable knowledge representation and exchange between engineering teams, a digital interface. Across digital interfaces, each engineering team maintains its own perspective towards the product realization problem, and each controls a subset of design variables and seeks to maximize its own payoff function subject to individual constraints. Hence, we postulate …

Advanced Rheological And Tribological Methods For Cosmetic Products, Joerg Laeuger Jul 2018

Advanced Rheological And Tribological Methods For Cosmetic Products, Joerg Laeuger

Advances in Cosmetic Formulation Design [2018]

Many different rheological procedures can used to tailor cosmetic products in a way that they meet the desired properties. Simple flow curve measurements reveal the viscosity at shear rates prevailing at processing conditions. Strain sweep give information on the strength of the rest structure and the amount of elasticity. The end of the linear visco-elastic range which is measured in a strain sweep is in a direct correlation to with the yield stress and flow point which need to be overcome in order that a gel like material starts to flow. A frequency sweep can help to gain information on …

Sensory Kaleidoscope – Taking Skin Feel To The Next Level Taking Sensory From Nature, Anna Howe, Anne Mu, Brian Yang Jul 2018

Sensory Kaleidoscope – Taking Skin Feel To The Next Level Taking Sensory From Nature, Anna Howe, Anne Mu, Brian Yang

Advances in Cosmetic Formulation Design [2018]

The skin feel of a cosmetic formulation is one of the drives for consumers’ purchase decision and loyalty to care products. Traditionally, skin sensory evaluations on various attributes are often conducted in comparison among prototypes to predict/screen winning formulations with high probability of consumers’ acceptance. However, due to the large number of sensory attributes, it is a challenge to compare several products/formulations of interests with all attributes in one chart. A new interactive tool, developed by Evonik, using a scientific approach to describe and understand the skin sensory profiles, allows simple comparison of formulations in one chart. It also visualizes …

Pathfinder: Affordable And Effective Web-Books For First Year Engineering Courses, Jess Everett, Scott Steiner

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

This paper describes the implementation of PathFinder (https://pathfinder.rowan.edu/), a website that facilitates the creation and dissemination of affordable web-books for college students. The purpose of this paper is to describe its implementation in an introduction-to-engineering curriculum at a public university in the north east, and to discuss the use of Pathfinder (or similar websites) in first and second year engineering courses in general.

The PathFinder website allows professors to create, maintain, and access an electronic database of engineering topic folders. Each folder contains information on a single topic and may contain an article and other content, e.g., variables, equations, images, …

Process Mineralogy Of Iranian High Sulfur Iron Ore, Tonglin Zhao, Xiaoli Wang, Hongle Ai, Ahmed Sobhy Jul 2018

Process Mineralogy Of Iranian High Sulfur Iron Ore, Tonglin Zhao, Xiaoli Wang, Hongle Ai, Ahmed Sobhy

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Processing of Iranian high sulfur iron ore is problematic in minerals industry. The iron ores were studied by the means of polarizing microscopy, chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction. The study shows that the iron ores have high grade of iron, and complex structures. XRD showed that the iron ore consists of metallic minerals such as magnetite with a small amount of hematite and limonite and non-metallic minerals as serpentine, chlorite, and talc. The average particle size of magnetite crystals is 0.182 mm. The ore contains 1.62% sulfur as harmful impurity in form of pyrite mineral. Due to the isomorphism of magnesium …

Structural, Nanomechanical, And Nanotribological Characterization Of Human Hair And Conditioner Using Atomic Force Microscopy And Nanoindentation, Bharat Bhushan Jul 2018

Structural, Nanomechanical, And Nanotribological Characterization Of Human Hair And Conditioner Using Atomic Force Microscopy And Nanoindentation, Bharat Bhushan

Advances in Cosmetic Formulation Design [2018]

Human hair is a nanocomposite biological fiber. Maintaining the health, feel, shine, color, softness, and overall aesthetics of the hair is highly desired. Hair care products such as shampoos and conditioners, along with damaging processes such as chemical dyeing and permanent wave treatments, affect the maintenance and grooming process and are important to study because they alter many hair properties. Nanoscale characterization of the cellular structure, mechanical properties, and morphological, frictional, and adhesive properties (tribological properties) of hair are essential to evaluate and develop better cosmetic products, and to advance the understanding of biological and cosmetic science. The tensile response …
