Multispecies Fruit Flower Detection Using A Refined Semantic Segmentation Network, Philipe A. Dias, Amy Tabb, Henry P. Medeiros
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In fruit production, critical crop management decisions are guided by bloom intensity, i.e., the number of flowers present in an orchard. Despite its importance, bloom intensity is still typically estimated by means of human visual inspection. Existing automated computer vision systems for flower identification are based on hand-engineered techniques that work only under specific conditions and with limited performance. This letter proposes an automated technique for flower identification that is robust to uncontrolled environments and applicable to different flower species. Our method relies on an end-to-end residual convolutional neural network (CNN) that represents the state-of-the-art in semantic segmentation. To enhance …

As the costs of Department of Defense (DoD) Weapon Systems increase, the ability to estimate the Operating and Support (O&S) costs accurately for the various weapon systems has become vital to long-term affordability. This research focuses on the O&S costs of the Air Force fixed-wing arsenal (i.e., platforms) for 1996–2016. First, the Cost Element Structure (CES) for 52 aircraft platforms and seven operational mission categories is analyzed to derive the descriptive statistics per aircraft category through examination of actual historical costs. Second, testing to identify statistical differences within the O&S CES construct across various Air Force aircraft categories is conducted. …

A Deterministic-Stochastic Method For Computing The Boltzmann Collision Integral In O(Mn) Operations, Alexander Alekseenko, Truong Nguyen, Aihua W. Wood
Faculty Publications
We developed and implemented a numerical algorithm for evaluating the Boltzmann collision integral with O(MN) operations, where N is the number of the discrete velocity points and M < N. At the base of the algorithm are nodal-discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of the collision operator on uniform grids and a bilinear convolution form of the Galerkin projection of the collision operator. Efficiency of the algorithm is achieved by applying singular value decomposition compression of the discrete collision kernel and by approximating the kinetic solution by a sum of Maxwellian streams using a stochastic likelihood maximization algorithm. Accuracy of the method is …

This article serves two purposes: first, to empirically model the annual percentage increase of operations and support (O&S) costs for fixed wing aircraft; and second, to place into the archival realm another reference for other researchers to consider when investigating other O&S topics. For this study of 21 different airframes grouped together at the Mission- Design Series (MDS), maintenance subcategories 3.1 Consumable Materials and Repair Parts, 3.2 Depot Level Repairables (DLR), and 3.4 Depot Maintenance accounted for an average 91.5% of annual organic maintenance costs. For contractor-maintained MDS, subcategory 3.7, Contractor Logistics Support (CLS) accounted for 96.6% of annual maintenance …

The major changes in distribution networks (medium and low voltage networks) over recent decades led to new challenges and issues in the operational management of these networks. Amongst others, issues such as load flow problems (power flow reversal, overloading of network equipment, network congestions), voltage problems (voltage limit violations, voltage increases and decreases, harmonics), power schedule management problems, network state estimation and problems with the operation of protection equipment could be encounterd. Besides, the control center staff which is confronted with new complex tasks, challenges and responsibilities, must be prepared and trained for the operational management of the future distribution …
Nanofluidic Applications Of Silica Membranes, John Michael Stout
Nanofluidic Applications Of Silica Membranes, John Michael Stout
Theses and Dissertations
This work presents membrane development applicable in nanofluidic devices. These membranes can also be termed suspended thin films, supported on two or more edges. I first discuss motivation and background for developing these structures. Then I derive the formative principles for nanofluidic systems. Following the derivation of the Navier-Stokes and Washburn equations, I discuss applying these theories to planar nanofluidic capillaries and finish the derivation by discussing the forces that drive liquid flow in nanochannels. I next discuss the membrane development process, starting with my work in static height traps, and develop the concept of analyzing nanoparticles using suspended membranes. …
A Hard-Real-Time Juggling Simulator To Shape Human Sensitivity To Cues And Coordination Of Muscles, Robert W. Nickl
A Hard-Real-Time Juggling Simulator To Shape Human Sensitivity To Cues And Coordination Of Muscles, Robert W. Nickl
Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports
Many virtual reality tasks incorporate auditory and haptic (or touch) feedback, in addition to visual displays of spatial information. Non-visual feedback modalities such as the former increase realism; but they may have an ancillary benefit of increasing human motor performance and learning. One task for which this has been exhibited is paddle juggling, or vertically bouncing a ball off of a rigid elastic planar surface. For the objective of hitting the ball toward a target height, visual feedback is sufficient. Yet, previous studies have shown that non-visual feedback----specifically haptic---both is sufficient in the absence of vision to maintain stable ball …
The Development Of A Novel Motion Cuing Algorithm For Flight Training Simulators Employing Objective Metrics For Evaluation, Ahmad Qasim Momani
The Development Of A Novel Motion Cuing Algorithm For Flight Training Simulators Employing Objective Metrics For Evaluation, Ahmad Qasim Momani
Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports
The value of a dynamic motion platform to the flight simulator is a controversial issue within the flight training community. The motion of the flight simulator platform has been shown to affect pilot performance and behavior. Moreover, its ability to provide the operator with the appropriate motion cues is essential for pilot training or research. Unwanted cues can cause the operator to develop inappropriate control behavior strategies that are not useful or might be dangerous in real flight. Performance studies show that the operator’s performance is enhanced when introducing motion which might indicate that the operator experiences a sensation closer …

Plasmonic Resonance Of Active Dimer Systems In The Presence Of Optical Binding Forces, Md Saber Nazim
Plasmonic Resonance Of Active Dimer Systems In The Presence Of Optical Binding Forces, Md Saber Nazim
Student Theses and Dissertations
Optical properties of metal nanoparticles are related to the collective oscillations of conduction electrons. In metals, these electrons are loosely bound with the lattice core and therefore oscillate freely with the incident electromagnetic wave. Such oscillations are popularly known as plasmonic resonance. The term nanoparticle, in general, refers to small cluster of atoms of size ranging from one nanometer to few hundred nanometers. Plasmonic resonance in metal spherical and core-shell nanoparticles yields a number of different properties and remarkably such resonances are tunable with both the geometrical parameters of the particles involved and also with the background. When more than …

Design, Simulation, And Construction Of An Ieee 14-Bus Power System, John Albert Boudreaux
LSU Master's Theses
Today’s bulk power system is massive, complex, and very dynamic. The U.S. power grid spans from coast to coast and even as far reaching as Canada. With the addition of new technologies such as renewable energies and power electronics to aid in power conversion and control, the power system grows more complex by the day. The most common approach of analyzing power system stability is through computer modeling and simulation. Due to the vast size and inaccessibility of transmission systems, real time testing can prove difficult. The motivation of this project was to design, simulate, and construct an IEEE 14 …

Batch Sizing In Sustainable Production Systems With Imperfect Quality, Farnaz Ghazi Nezami, Mojtaba Heydar
Batch Sizing In Sustainable Production Systems With Imperfect Quality, Farnaz Ghazi Nezami, Mojtaba Heydar
Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Presentations And Conference Materials
In classic Economic Production Quantity (EPQ), an optimal batch size is determined to minimize total production cost including setup and inventory holding costs, and defective parts are not allowed. In this paper an imperfect EPQ system is studied to minimize the overall cost, where setup cost, scarp rate, batch size, and electrical power demand are determined by the model. In this imperfect production system, a percentage of the batch is defective in each cycle, which will be reworked at an extra charge. In addition, the model considers electrical power demand charge which accounts for a large percentage of industrial utility …

This study aims to determine if light scatter parameters measured with spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) can accurately predict stromal, epithelial, and adipose fractions in freshly resected, unstained human breast specimens. An explicit model was developed to predict stromal, epithelial, and adipose fractions as a function of light scattering parameters, which was validated against a quantitative analysis of digitized histology slides for N = 31 specimens using leave-one-out cross-fold validation. Specimen mean stromal, epithelial, and adipose volume fractions predicted from light scattering parameters strongly correlated with those calculated from digitized histology slides (r = 0.90, 0.77, and 0.91, respectively, p-value× …

Finite-Time Sliding Mode And Super-Twisting Control Of Fighter Aircraft, Kaushik Raj, Venkatesan Muthukumar, Sahjendra N. Singh, Keum W. Lee
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
The development of two nonlinear robust higher-order flight control systems for roll-coupled maneuvers of fighter aircraft with uncertain parameters is discussed in this article. The objective is to independently control the output variables (roll angle, pitch angle and sideslip angle) using aileron, elevator and rudder control surfaces. For a nominal model of aircraft, first a finite time stabilizing (FTS) control law, based on the notion of geometric homogeneity, is designed. Then for robust control in the presence of parameter uncertainties, (i) a discontinuous sliding mode (DSM) control law and (ii) a super-twisting (STW) continuous control law is designed. It is …
Ozone-Surface Exchange And Transport And Transformation Near Ventilation Air Supply, Pradeep Ramasubramanian
Ozone-Surface Exchange And Transport And Transformation Near Ventilation Air Supply, Pradeep Ramasubramanian
Dissertations and Theses
Ozone in indoor environments can pose a health risk to human occupants; around half of exposure to this pollutant occurs inside buildings. One approach to reducing indoor O3 levels is to mitigate O3 as it enters a building via outdoor air ventilation supply. Often, mechanical systems that introduce outdoor air into buildings are placed on building rooftops. At the urban scale, greenery has been shown to reduce levels of some harmful pollutants, including ozone and cities like Portland, OR, are mandating green roofs be built on large commercial buildings to increase urban green surfaces. We investigate if rooftop …

Single-Use Technologies III: Scientific and Technological Advancements
The issue of plastic materials in our environment has been of recent interest. The biotechnology community has responded by examining the effects of single-use systems employed in biomanufacturing. It is natural to emphasize a particular set of environmental concerns over others, and especially the more visible ones. But, in supporting truly sustainable manufacturing systems, it is important to consider all relevant types of pollution or environmental stress. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a science-based approach for evaluating the environmental impacts, benefits, trade-offs, and burden shifts of a process in an objective format. It considers production process’ materials, equipment and …

Single-Use Technologies III: Scientific and Technological Advancements
Purpose built single-use fermenters enable production facilities to utilize the single-use technologies instead of traditional stainless steel fermentor vessels without modifying their existing procedures. The manufacture lead time of the single-use fermentor hardware is a fraction of traditional vessels. As each single-use bioprocess container ships sterile and validated, reducing down time between cultures and allowing for more production volume in less space. Here we demonstrate kLa studies and aerobic cultivations with up to 2vvm gas flow in comparison of the single-use fermentors to traditional stainless steel fermenters. These single-use fermentors covering 6L-300L working volumes are specifically designed to meet the …

A novel photothermal process to spatially modulate the concentration of sub-wavelength, high-index nanocrystals in a multicomponent Ge-As-Pb-Se chalcogenide glass thin film resulting in an optically functional infrared grating is demonstrated. The process results in the formation of an optical nanocomposite possessing ultralow dispersion over unprecedented bandwidth. The spatially tailored index and dispersion modification enables creation of arbitrary refractive index gradients. Sub-bandgap laser exposure generates a Pb-rich amorphous phase transforming on heat treatment to high-index crystal phases. Spatially varying nanocrystal density is controlled by laser dose and is correlated to index change, yielding local index modification to ≈+0.1 in the mid-infrared.

Comparative flame retardancy of micro wood fiber plastic composites (WPCs) with fire retardants (1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) ethane, metal hydroxides and nanoclay) was studied. The fire additives (1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) ethane as well as magnesium hydroxide) obviously enhanced the fire retarding properties of WPCs. Especially, 1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) ethane significantly reduced the total heat release as well as heat release rate. In addition, a synergistic effect of 1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) and nanoclay was achieved for the enhanced fire retarding performance of WPCs.

Single-Use Technologies III: Scientific and Technological Advancements
The complex interactions between biological components and polymer materials has an extensive technical history. Virtually every surface property has been invoked as being important to biological interfacial response: texture, roughness, topology, porosity, hydrophilic, hydrophobic, polar, apolar, (non)-wettable, non-fouling brushes, surface mobility, rigidity, flexibility, crystalline versus amorphous, aspect ratio. Few surface properties alone, however, provide consistent, global technical solutions to vexing biomedical technology problems, particularly with cell culture, blood, plasma, microbial milieu, and protein solutions. Bio-interface materials performance must therefore be tailored specifically to each application. Short-term contact use (minutes/hours) has different materials interface requirements than long-term (days) use; globular proteins …
