Business Intelligence And Data Analytics As A Driver Of Dynamic Capability Strategic Approach, Maoloud Dabab, Charles Weber

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Papers addressing the Dynamic Capability (DC) approach either support it as the best strategy or express its defects and impediments to implementation. However, this paper aims to promote the DC through the means of digital transformation from the angle of Business Intelligence and Data Analytics (BIDA). This article employs the logic of matching the essential components of the DC and BIDA to verify the extent of their conformity. A literature review methodology has been adopted since there are a considerable number of publications that focus on DC and BIDA. This paper posits that the main components of DC are sensing …

Assessing Photovoltaic Solar Technologies As A Solution For The Problem Of Power Shortage In Iraq, Ahmed A. Alibage Oct 2018

Assessing Photovoltaic Solar Technologies As A Solution For The Problem Of Power Shortage In Iraq, Ahmed A. Alibage

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

In a developing country like Iraq, where the infrastructure of the electricity public sector (production, transportation, and distribution) has suffered for a long time from the direct effects of successive wars; lack of technocracy; bureaucracy; neglect; massive corruption; and much more, have all contributed to the failure of this sector. Indeed, the electricity sector in Iraq has not been developed for more than forty years; or even properly rehabilitated and/or maintained its facilities, which has led to a huge gap between the demand and supply (demand is double than the supply). It is obvious that the alternative solutions that have …

Highly Thiolated Poly (Beta-Amino Ester) Nanoparticles For Acute Redox Applications, Andrew L. Lakes, David A. Puleo, J. Zach Hilt, Thomas D. Dziubla

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Disulfides are used extensively in reversible cross-linking because of the ease of reduction into click-reactive thiols. However, the free-radical scavenging properties upon reduction are often under-considered. The free thiols produced upon reduction of this disulfide material mimic the cellular reducing chemistry (glutathione) that serves as a buffer against acute oxidative stress. A nanoparticle formulation producing biologically relevant concentrations of thiols may not only provide ample chemical conjugation sites, but potentially be useful against severe acute oxidative stress exposure, such as in targeted radioprotection. In this work, we describe the synthesis and characterization of highly thiolated poly (β-amino ester) (PBAE) nanoparticles …

A Reliable Mems Switch Using Electrostatic Levitation, Mark Pallay, Shahrzad Towfighian Oct 2018

A Reliable Mems Switch Using Electrostatic Levitation, Mark Pallay, Shahrzad Towfighian

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship

In this study an electrostatic MEMS beam is experimentally released from pull-in using electrostatic levitation. A MEMS cantilever with a parallel plate electrode configuration is pulled-in by applying a voltage above the pull-in threshold. Two more electrodes are fixed to the substrate on both sides of the beam to create electrostatic levitation. Large voltage pulses upwards of 100 V are applied to the side electrodes to release the pulled-in beam. A high voltage is needed to overcome the stronger parallel plate electrostatic force and stiction forces, which hold the beam in its pulled-in position. A relationship between bias voltage and …

Novel Devices For Studying Acute And Chronic Mechanical Stress In Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells, Farhad Farjood, Elizabeth Vargis Oct 2018

Novel Devices For Studying Acute And Chronic Mechanical Stress In Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells, Farhad Farjood, Elizabeth Vargis

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is a major cause of blindness in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Overexpression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a potent angiogenic protein, by retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells is a key stimulator of CNV. Mechanical stress occurs during different stages of AMD and is a possible inducer of VEGF expression in RPE cells. However, robust and realistic approaches to studying acute and chronic mechanical stress under various AMD stages do not exist. The majority of previous work has studied cyclic stretching of RPE cells grown on flexible substrates, but an ideal model must be able to …

Product Popularity Versus Size Of Conversation In Social Media: An Analysis Of Twitter Conversations About Youtube Product Categories, Nitin Mayande, Charles Weber Oct 2018

Product Popularity Versus Size Of Conversation In Social Media: An Analysis Of Twitter Conversations About Youtube Product Categories, Nitin Mayande, Charles Weber

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

It has always been assumed that a large conversation about a topic on social media implies that the topic is popular. However, an empirical study of Twitter conversations about a variety of YouTube product categories, which is described in this paper, has shown that this is not necessarily the case. Popularity as measured by distribution volume is not necessarily a reliable indicator of the size of a community or conversation that is associated with a product category. This suggests that current online marketing practices are not nearly as effective as has been assumed to date. Novel, potentially more effective approaches …

Effects Of Future Connected Autonomous Vehicles On Freeway Congestion Using Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping, Hakan Kutgun, Vivian Du Pont, Henry Janzen

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Continuing population growth and urbanization are projected to add 2.5 billion people to the world's urban population by 2050 [1]. It is evident that this will increase traffic congestion especially in the urban areas, which will bring economic, safety, environmental and quality of life challenges. There are various organizations looking for possible solutions to reduce the impact of future congestion by long term planning [2], most of these studies don't take into account emergence of disruptive technologies. The concept of vehicles with autonomous driving and online connectivity capabilities, namely, connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) is an emerging technology [3] which may …

Framework For Building Integrative Scenarios Of Autonomous Vehicle Technology Application And Impacts, Using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (Fcm), Pei Zhang, Antoine J. Jetter

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Currently, Autonomous Vehicle (AV) technology is considered a potentially life-changing new technology that brings science fiction to life and can fundamentally impact how and where people live and work. As is the case with any new technology, it is unknown how the future will unfold. Instead, ideas about the future can be captured through scenario planning and used to develop a range of plausible, alternative futures (or scenarios). These scenarios can be used for strategic decision-making in technology and urban planning, transportation and business. Because policy makers, technology developers, and end-users all need to make assumptions about future AV technology, …

Introducing Competencies In Organizations, Henk Plessius, Anand Sheombar, Pascal Ravesteyn

Communications of the IIMA

In the fast-changing world of IT, relevant competencies are getting more important as these determine how successful you can function in practice. As a consequence, organizations are introducing competency frameworks like the European e-Competence Framework (e-CF, 2014) in their IT departments. However, for many organizations it is unclear what good practices and pitfalls are when introducing such a framework. In this paper this topic is studied by analysing 13 interviews with IT- and HR-managers who are (or recently have been) involved in a transition towards the use of competencies with their IT-staff.

Uncovering The Hidden Factors That Could Compromise Equitable And Effective Engineering Education, Idalis Villanueva, Janice Mejia, Renata A. Revelo

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

Literacies are central to the social and cultural practices that are intertwined with identities, who gets to participate in engineering, and the knowledge that is valued in the discipline. However, identifying these literacies is not a straightforward process for engineering faculty. The purpose of this workshop is to help engineering faculty identify equity- oriented literacies that challenge hidden curriculum frameworks in engineering and influence engineering identity formation.

Design Of A Thrust Stand For Low Power Electric Propulsion, John Norton Oct 2018

Design Of A Thrust Stand For Low Power Electric Propulsion, John Norton

Undergraduate Research Symposium - Prescott

Electric propulsion (EP) has been gaining popularity due to the high efficiencies and specific impulse. These thrusters all follow the same general idea of converting stored electrical potential energy to kinetic energy for the craft; typically, this is accomplished by the acceleration of gas particles through three main methods, electrothermal, electromagnetic, and/or electrostatic. The specific impulse is the change of momentum per unit of propellant expended. While chemical propulsion produces a high change in momentum, they use much more propellant mass than an electric thruster. EP devices will typically produce very low thrust, which makes it difficult to measure thrust …

Developing High Performance Grid Computing Systems On A Budget, Forrest Mobley Oct 2018

Developing High Performance Grid Computing Systems On A Budget, Forrest Mobley

Undergraduate Research Symposium - Prescott

High performance grid computing systems are essential for today’s engineering and research projects, as they make certain impossibilities possible, and save time and money as well. However, these supercomputers can cost upwards of a hundred million dollars and require large amounts of space and energy to keep, making them all but inaccessible to small engineering firms and universities. As most of these institutions do not require the massive level of computing power offered by these large grid computers, small scale versions are often built, with various setups. The purpose of this project was to set up a new small scale …

Unobserved Heterogeneity And Spatial Correlation: Statistical And Econometric Analyses Of Heavy-Vehicle Hard Braking And Crash Frequency, Jason Anderson Oct 2018

Unobserved Heterogeneity And Spatial Correlation: Statistical And Econometric Analyses Of Heavy-Vehicle Hard Braking And Crash Frequency, Jason Anderson

PSU Transportation Seminars

In heavy-vehicles (a truck with a gross vehicle weight rating of greater than 10,000 pounds), a hard braking event is described as an event that prompts the vehicle’s “black box” to record an abrupt change in speed. More specifically, this occurs when the driver applies excess force to the vehicle’s brake. These hard braking events can then serve as a proxy for several factors, such as economic impacts, environmental impacts, and impacts on safety. In the context of the present study, being that approximately one-third of all heavy-vehicle-caused crashes in 2014 were attributed to faulty brakes, there is a need …

Perspective Review Of What Is Needed For Molecular-Specific Fluorescence-Guided Surgery, Brian W. Pogue, Eben L. Rosenthal, Samuel Achilefu, Gooitzen M. Van Dam

Dartmouth Scholarship

Molecular image-guided surgery has the potential for translating the tools of molecular pathology to real-time guidance in surgery. As a whole, there are incredibly positive indicators of growth, including the first United States Food and Drug Administration clearance of an enzyme-biosynthetic-activated probe for surgery guidance, and a growing number of companies producing agents and imaging systems. The strengths and opportunities must be continued but are hampered by important weaknesses and threats within the field. A key issue to solve is the inability of macroscopic imaging tools to resolve microscopic biological disease heterogeneity and the limitations in microscopic systems matching surgery …

Water risk management is a ubiquitous challenge faced by stakeholders in the water or agricultural sector. We present a methodological framework for forecasting water storage requirements and present an application of this methodology to risk assessment in India. The application focused on forecasting crop water stress for potatoes grown during the monsoon season in the Satara district of Maharashtra. Pre-season large-scale climate predictors used to forecast water stress were selected based on an exhaustive search method that evaluates for highest ranked probability skill score and lowest root-mean-squared error in a leave-one-out cross-validation mode. Adaptive forecasts were made in the years …

The Fabrication And Characterization Of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 Solar Cell, Yasir Al-Rikabi Oct 2018

The Fabrication And Characterization Of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 Solar Cell, Yasir Al-Rikabi

Theses and Dissertations

The extremely large energy consumption rate on Earth today is likely to exhaust the conventional energy resources such as fossil fuels and coal in the near future. The need for new renewable energy sources becomes inevitable and urgent. Among various new energy resources, solar energy is the most promising one because it is abundant and environmentally clean. The Sun light can be converted into electricity by using solar cell devices. Even though the solar cell panels made of thin films are in competition with conventional single crystal solar cells, only four thin film solar cells, i.e. amorphous silicon (a- Si), …

A Parametric Study Of Wave Interaction With A Rotor Having Hydrofoil Blades, Yingchen Yang, Fredrick A. Jenet, Ben Xu, Juan Carlos Garza, Benjamin Tamayo, Yessica Chavez, Oscar Reyes, Samuel Fuentes

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Our recent progress on studying wave interaction with a lift-type rotor is discussed in this paper. The particular focus is on characterization of the rotor’s unidirectional responsiveness in waves. The rotor consists of six hydrofoil blades in two sets. One blade set has three blades laid out as a vertical-axis wind turbine of the Darrieus type. The other blade set has three blades configured like a Wells turbine. In combination, the formed rotor can be driven by flows in any direction to perform unidirectional rotation about its vertically mounted shaft. This unidirectional responsiveness of the rotor also holds in waves, …

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

Selective oxidation of biomass-based monosaccharides into value-added sugar acids is highly desired, but limited success of producing D-xylonic acid has been achieved. Herein, we report an efficient catalyst system, viz., Au nanoparticles anchored on the inner walls of hollow Al2O3 nanospheres (Au@h- Al2O3), which could catalyze the selective oxidation of D-xylose into D-xylonic acid under base-free conditions. The mesoporous Al2O3 shell as the adsorbent first adsorbed D-xylose. Then, the interface of Au nanoparticles and Al2O3 as active sites spontaneously dissociated O2, and …

Publications and Research

Modern marine biologists seeking to study or interact with deep-sea organisms are confronted with few options beyond industrial robotic arms, claws, and suction samplers. This limits biological interactions to a subset of “rugged” and mostly immotile fauna. As the deep sea is one of the most biologically diverse and least studied ecosystems on the planet, there is much room for innovation in facilitating delicate interactions with a multitude of organisms. The biodiversity and physiology of shallow marine systems, such as coral reefs, are common study targets due to the easier nature of access; SCUBA diving allows for in situ delicate …

High Performance Glad Nanorod Cuinxga(1-X)Se2 Arrays With Enhanced Carrier Collection And Light Trapping For Photodetector Applications, Matthew P. Brozak

Theses and Dissertations

Nanostructured arrays have become an appealing alternative to their thin film and bulk counterparts in photovoltaic and photoconductivity applications. Thin films have recently continued the evolution of efficiency and material sciences after taking over from traditional, doped silicon devices. Inside of the thin film revolution, CuInxGa(1-x)Se2 (CIGS) has emerged as a high efficiency p-type semiconductor with a wide band gap that is tunable based on the Indium to Gallium ratio and often deposited via expensive, high temperature deposition methods. While each of the aforementioned methods of construction have their disadvantages, the advantages of each can be combined to potentially increase …

Magnetoelectric Memory Cells With Domain-Wall-Mediated Switching, Kirill Belashchenko, Oleg Tchernyshyov, Alexey Kovalev, Dmitri Nikonov

Kirill Belashchenko Publications

A magnetoelectric memory cell with domain - wall - mediated switching is implemented using a split gate architecture . The split gate architecture allows a domain wall to be trapped within a magnetoelectric antiferromagnetic ( MEAF ) active layer . An extension of this architecture applies to multiple gate linear arrays that can offer advantages in memory density , programmability , and logic functionality . Applying a small anisotropic in - plane shear strain to the MEAF can block domain wall precession to improve reliability and speed of switching

Method To Provide Meta-Stable Operation Of Dc Microgrid Comprising A Pulsed Load, David G. Wilson, Wayne Weaver, Rush D. Robinett Iii, Ronald Matthews, Steven F. Glover

Michigan Tech Patents

A Hamiltonian surface shaping power flow control (HSSPFC) method is used to analyze the meta-stability and adjust pulsed power loads on a DC electric power distribution network. Pulsed power loads are nonlinear, time-variant systems that cause nonlinear limit-cycles. During the on periods of a pulsed load, the system can be in an unstable state and is damped back to stability during the off state of the load. Therefore, over the entire period of the pulse the system may only be assessed as meta-stable. As shown through simulation, HIL and hardware results, the HSSPFC method is more accurate than the other …
