Effective Methods And Tools For Mining App Store Reviews, Nishant Jha Oct 2018

Effective Methods And Tools For Mining App Store Reviews, Nishant Jha

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Research on mining user reviews in mobile application (app) stores has noticeably advanced in the past few years. The main objective is to extract useful information that app developers can use to build more sustainable apps. In general, existing research on app store mining can be classified into three genres: classification of user feedback into different types of software maintenance requests (e.g., bug reports and feature requests), building practical tools that are readily available for developers to use, and proposing visions for enhanced mobile app stores that integrate multiple sources of user feedback to ensure app survivability. Despite these major …

Computational Aerodynamics And Anatomical Characterization Of Laryngotracheal Stenosis In Children, William Poynot Oct 2018

Computational Aerodynamics And Anatomical Characterization Of Laryngotracheal Stenosis In Children, William Poynot

LSU Master's Theses

Laryngotracheal stenosis (LTS) is a health condition in which an obstruction in the upper trachea can cause breathing difficulties and increased incidence of infection, among other symptoms. Occurring most commonly due to intubation in infants, LTS often requires corrective surgery. Currently, clinical methods of assessing the blockage region are simplistic and subjective, and it is challenging to determine the most effective surgical strategy for any given patient. In the present work, a comprehensive methodology is proposed for characterizing the stenosis region both in terms of its anatomical parameters and its corresponding aerodynamic properties. The combination of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) …

Coupled Chemical Pre-Oxidation And Aerobic Bioremediation Of Buried Mc252 Oil Across A Headlands Beach Profile, Olivia Bramlet Oct 2018

Coupled Chemical Pre-Oxidation And Aerobic Bioremediation Of Buried Mc252 Oil Across A Headlands Beach Profile, Olivia Bramlet

LSU Master's Theses

The release of MC252 crude oil following the Deepwater Horizon event has emphasized the need to investigate factors controlling the extent of contamination degradation in coastal environments. Dam structures created on Fourchon Beach, LA established conditions for PAH and n-alkane accumulation and burial along a vertical profile that persists today due to the anaerobic, often anoxic, and hypersaline conditions of the groundwater. The ability to remove the oxygen limitation present on in situ aerobic biodegradation of buried petroleum-based hydrocarbons in this environment was investigated through the coupled process of chemical oxidation and enhanced bioremediation using a proprietary formulation of activated …

Multidimensional Optimal Droop Control For Dc Microgrids In Military Applications, Kaitlyn J. Bunker, Michael D. Cook, Wayne Weaver, Gordon Parker Oct 2018

Multidimensional Optimal Droop Control For Dc Microgrids In Military Applications, Kaitlyn J. Bunker, Michael D. Cook, Wayne Weaver, Gordon Parker

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Reliability is a key consideration when microgrid technology is implemented in military applications. Droop control provides a simple option without requiring communication between microgrid components, increasing the control system reliability. However, traditional droop control does not allow the microgrid to utilize much of the power available from a solar resource. This paper applies an optimal multidimensional droop control strategy for a solar resource connected in a microgrid at a military patrol base. Simulation and hardware-in-the-loop experiments of a sample microgrid show that much more power from the solar resource can be utilized, while maintaining the system’s bus voltage around a …

A Mathematical Remodeling For Crop Portfolio Selection Under Limited Irrigation Resource, Li Zhang Oct 2018

A Mathematical Remodeling For Crop Portfolio Selection Under Limited Irrigation Resource, Li Zhang

S.C. Water Resources Conference

A mathematical model and optimization framework to aid farmers in selecting crop portfolios were proposed and discussed in (Bokhira et al. 2014; Chrispell et al. 2012). In this paper, we propose a refined mathematical model which reduces the number of constraints by nearly half while the number of decision variables is about the same. Also, the proposed model is easier to implement and maintain due to its generalized structure, and it provides more flexibility for us to expand the problem. Some key sensitive analysis is also provided.

Physical And Technological Aspects Of Microstrip Ebg Filter Design, Marina Koledintseva, Sergiu Radu, Joe Nuebel

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Some physical and technological aspects of the electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) common-mode (CM) filters are discussed. A simple EBG notch filter for CM in edge-coupled differential microstrip pair is designed using full-wave numerical electromagnetic software. Mixed-mode S-parameters of the EBG structure are analyzed as functions of its basic geometry, including size and number of EBG patches, gaps between them, geometry and position of signal traces across the EBG patches. In this work, one and two differential pairs crossing the EBG patches are considered. It is shown that the filter performance depends on various technological features, such as frequency-dispersive core and prepreg …

Detection Of Multiple Orbital-Angular-Momentum Beams By A Single Metasurface, Menglin L.N. Chen, Wei E.L. Sha, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An approach for the detection of orbital angular momentum (OAM) is proposed. By formulating the transmission function of an arbitrary aperture, desired field distribution can be generated. A geometric-phase based metasurface is used to implement the aperture that is designed to convert an OAM wave to a directional wave with distinguishable radiation direction according to the incident OAM. Therefore, by examining the directivity, we can tell the value of incident OAM. The effectiveness of our approach is validated by numerical calculation and full-wave simulation.

While machine learning is becoming a demanding request in every corner of modern technology development, we are trying to see if we could make computational electromagnetic algorithms compatible to machine learning methods. In this paper, we introduce two efforts in line with this direction: solving method of moments (MoM) can be seen as a training training process. Consequently, the artificial neural network (ANN) could be used to solve MoM naturally through training. Amazon Web Service (AWS) can be used as the computations platform to utilize the existing hardware and software resources for machine learning. Another effort regarding to the nonlinear …

Model Order Reduction Schemes In Solving Multi-Scale Electromagnetic Problems, Qin S. Liu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Qi Dai, Hui Gan, Tian Xia, Ting Wan, Sheng Sun, Weng Cho Chew

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Reduced-order models show significant advantages in solving multi-scale electromagnetic problems when the equivalence surfaces are used to enclose the dense-mesh features. With much coarse discretization on the equivalence surface, the computational complexities are largely reduced. Additionally, the scheme is suitable for the scattering problems especially when the location of radiator changes.

Noncontact Time-Domain Emi Measurement Of Two Adjacent Traces On A Pcb, Haimi Qiu, Chengyang Luo, Wenxiao Fang, Lijun Jiang Oct 2018

Noncontact Time-Domain Emi Measurement Of Two Adjacent Traces On A Pcb, Haimi Qiu, Chengyang Luo, Wenxiao Fang, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nonintrusive electromagnetic interference (EMI) detection is a powerful method for EMI diagnosis in high-speed links and multiple signal PCB designs. However, due to the dispersive nature of signal delivery passages and interferences from neighborhood signals, it is very difficult to locate exactly the EMI source of two adjacent traces without contact. In this paper, a noncontact time-domain voltage measurement method is proposed to detect the EMI signals of two adjacent traces on a PCB. A near-field electric probe is employed and a reconstruction algorithm is developed to recover the voltage signals without contact. Through experimental benchmarks, it is demonstrated that …

Situational awareness and indoor positioning of firefighters are types of information of paramount importance to the success of search and rescue operations. GPS units are undependable for use in Indoor Positioning Systems due to their associated mar- gins of error in position and their reliance on satellite communication that can be interrupted inside large structures. There are few other techniques like dead reck- oning, Wifi and bluetooth based triangulation, Structure from Motion (SFM) based scene reconstruction for Indoor positioning system. However due to high temper- atures, the rapidly changing environment of fires, and low parallax in the thermal images, the …

Equivalent Capacitance And Multilayer Models For Effective Roughness Dielectric In Pcbs, Marina Koledintseva, Tracey Vincent Oct 2018

Equivalent Capacitance And Multilayer Models For Effective Roughness Dielectric In Pcbs, Marina Koledintseva, Tracey Vincent

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effective Roughness Dielectric (ERD) is used to substitute copper foil roughness in printed circuit board (PCB) interconnects. In this work, the equivalent capacitance approach is used to get the ERD parameters based on the understanding that there is a gradual variation of concentration of metallic inclusions in the transition layer between the dielectric and foil. The metallic concentration profile can be extracted from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) or high-resolution optical microscopy. The proposed model of equivalent capacitance with gradient dielectric is applied to standard (STD), very-low-profile (VLP), and hyper-very-low profile (HVLP) foils, and the frequency-dependent dielectric parameters of the homogenized …

Influence Of Higher-Order Modes In Coaxial Waveguide On Measurements Of Material Parameters, Dmitry A. Petrov, Konstantin N. Rozanov, Marina Y. Koledintseva Oct 2018

Influence Of Higher-Order Modes In Coaxial Waveguide On Measurements Of Material Parameters, Dmitry A. Petrov, Konstantin N. Rozanov, Marina Y. Koledintseva

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of a coaxial air-filled line as a test fixture for measuring complex permittivity and permeability often shows odd resonance-like behavior of material parameters as functions of frequency. This effect is typically either ascribed to the half-wavelength resonance at the sample length, or erroneously misinterpreted as intrinsic resonance behavior of the material. However, as is shown in this paper, such behavior can be attributed to excitation of the higher-order modes on the surface of the sample resulting in resonance absorption of electromagnetic energy in the test fixture. Herein, analytical, numerical, and experimental results show that there can actually be …

Community Resilience Management : Reflections And Strategies From Corporate Sustainability, Jennifer Schneider, John Hummel, Joseph M. Rosenbeck 4756469, Sarah Dobie

Journal of Environmental Sustainability

Creating community resilience is a daunting task, both in scope and application, therefore it is useful to examine related efforts to inform our strategy. Sustainability, specifically corporate sustainability, has developed through similar challenges and provides insight into the possible trajectory of community resilience management. We find that both concepts reflect similar origins, developmental paths and merging goals at a scale that can be systematically managed. Therefore, we describe four strategies from corporate sustainability management that can be applied to community resilience 1) consider the community context while implementing an increasingly broad view of responsibility; 2) integrate and engage across constructs; …

Webinar: Addressing Bicycle-Vehicle Conflicts With Alternate Signal Control Strategies, Sirisha Kothuri Oct 2018

Webinar: Addressing Bicycle-Vehicle Conflicts With Alternate Signal Control Strategies, Sirisha Kothuri

TREC Webinar Series

There is nationwide interest in supporting sustainable and active transportation modes such as bicycling and walking due to the many benefits associated with them, including reduced congestion, lower emissions and improved health. Although the number of bicyclists is increasing, safety remains a top concern. In urban areas, a common crash type involving bicycles at intersections is the “right hook” where a right-turning vehicle collides with a through bicyclist. While geometric treatments and pavement markings have been studied, there is a lack of research on signal timing treatments to address right-hook bicycle-vehicle conflicts.

A Narrow-Wall Complementary-Split-Ring Slotted Waveguide Antenna For High-Power-Microwave Applications, Xuyuan Pan Oct 2018

A Narrow-Wall Complementary-Split-Ring Slotted Waveguide Antenna For High-Power-Microwave Applications, Xuyuan Pan

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A narrow-band, rugged, complementary-split-ring (CSR) slotted waveguide antenna (SWA) with significant size reduction is presented. The antenna is to be vertically front mounted on a land vehicle, with a horizontally polarized fan-beam radiation pattern. The radiation characteristics of a CSR slot in the narrow-wall of a rectangular waveguide are studied for the first time in this work. Both simulation and experimental results show that the complementary-split-ring slot radiates a linearly polarized wave with a total efficiency and gain close to those of conventional longitudinal slots, while the proposed CSR slots have a maximal outer diameter of 0.23λ0, much …
