Mechanistic Investigation Toward A Microkinetic Model For Decarboxylation Of Gamma Valerolactone Over Silica Alumina, Christian Suhngwa Jungong

Theses - ALL

γ-valerolactone (GVL) ring opening- and decarboxylation rates were measured over amorphous silica alumina (SiO2/Al2O3) catalyst in the gas phase, using a down configuration fixed bed reactor, operating under anhydrous and differential conditions. By varying temperature, space time and GVL partial pressure, measured rates were leveraged to determine kinetic parameters (apparent activation barriers and pre-exponential factors) for the ring opening and decarboxylation step, as well as thermodynamic parameters (enthalpy- and entropy of reaction) for the ring opening step. The experimentally measured parameters were applied for the development of a microkinetic model that quantitatively describes the overall kinetics involved in the decarboxylation …

A Study Of Scattering From A Layer Of Random Discrete Medium With Hierarchical Equivalent Source Algorithm (Hesa), Chan Fai Lum, Fu Xin, Hong Tat Ewe, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper is to present a new numerical method which can be used in computational electromagnetics in microwave remote sensing of random discrete medium embedded with irregular shape of scatterers. Current Radiative Transfer (RT) theoretical modeling is normally used to simulate wave propagation in the medium and wave scattering by basic shapes of scatterers, e.g., cylinder, disk, needle or sphere where the scattering of those scatterers was normally derived analytically with some assumption and approximation. To simulate the total backscattering coefficient from a layer of random medium, traditionally it was quite common that Mie phase matrix was used to compute …

Pepper Mild Mottle Virus As A Surrogate For Enteric Viruses: Implications For Assessing Water Quality, Erin Michelle Symonds Nov 2016

Pepper Mild Mottle Virus As A Surrogate For Enteric Viruses: Implications For Assessing Water Quality, Erin Michelle Symonds

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Less than 10% of the world’s domestic wastewater is disinfected prior to discharge into surface waters; therefore, human exposure to diverse wastewater-related pathogens results in millions of cases of illness each year. Among the enteric pathogens, viruses represent an important group of emerging pathogens and are frequently the cause of food- and water-borne outbreaks of illness. Although the World Health Organization and many government agencies mandate the use of bacterial indicators to identify poor microbial water quality, it is well known that these indicators poorly correlate with fecal pollution contamination events and risk of disease. The field of public health-related …

Formation Of Trihalomethanes (Thms) As Disinfection By-Products (Dbps) When Treated Municipal Wastewater Is Disinfected With Sodium Hypochlorite, Helene Kassouf Nov 2016

Formation Of Trihalomethanes (Thms) As Disinfection By-Products (Dbps) When Treated Municipal Wastewater Is Disinfected With Sodium Hypochlorite, Helene Kassouf

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Disinfection is an essential process in the treatment of municipal wastewater before the treated wastewater can be discharged to the environment. Hillsborough County's Northwest Regional Water Reclamation Facility (NWRWRF) in Tampa, Florida, currently uses ultraviolet (UV) light for disinfection. However, this method has proven expensive to implement and maintain, and may not be effective if the light transmission is poor. For these reasons, Hillsborough County is considering switching from UV light to sodium hypochlorite for disinfection. However, hypochlorite (chlorine) disinfection has disadvantages as well, such as the production of disinfection by-products (DBPs) such as trihalomethanes (THM) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), …

Cracking Potential And Temperature Sensitivity Of Metakaolin Concrete, Andrew Robert Williams

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Metakaolin is a pozzolanic material with the potential to reduce permeability and chloride ingress; however, quantification of the effects of metakaolin use on the cracking sensitivity of concrete mixtures is needed to ensure that these improvements in performance are not compromised. This study was conducted to investigate the early age cracking potential due to restraint stresses from incorporating metakaolin in concrete. Calorimetry testing showed that metakaolin was more sensitive to temperature than mixtures with only Portland cement. Results showed more shrinkage, less stress relaxation, and higher restraint stress from the inclusion of metakaolin, potentially increasing cracking sensitivity of mixtures.

Right-Hand Side Effect On The Convergence Of Integral Equation Based Systems, Qin S. Liu, Sheng Sun, Weng Cho Chew, Qi I. Dai, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A study of the right-hand side effect for an iterative solver is presented. The right-hand side determines whether a mode can be excited under certain excitation. Based on the matrix equation system Ā · x = b, different formulations are discussed including the electric field integral equation (EFIE), Calderón preconditioned EFIE with electro-quasi-static problems, and the magnetic integral equation (MFIE) with magneto-quasi-static problems. Detailed spectral analysis shows the importance of the weighted right-hand side effect in both the convergence and accuracy of iterative system.

A Low-Loss Metasurface Antireflection Coating On Dispersive Surface Plasmon Structure, Jiyeon Jeon, Khagendra Bhattarai, Deok-Kee Kim, Jun Oh Kim, Augustine Urbas, Sang Jun Lee, Zahyun Ku, Jiangfeng Zhou

Physics Faculty Publications

Over the years, there has been increasing interest in the integration of metal hole array (MHA) with optoelectronic devices, as a result of enhanced coupling of incident light into the active layer of devices via surface plasmon polariton (SPP) resonances. However, not all incident light contributes to the SPP resonances due to significant reflection loss at the interface between incident medium and MHA. Conventional thin-film antireflection (AR) coating typically does not work well due to non-existing material satisfying the AR condition with strong dispersion of MHA’s effective impedances. We demonstrate a single-layer metasurface AR coating that completely eliminates the refection …

In this paper we introduce a low-cost procedure and methodology for markerless projectile tracking in three-dimensional (3D) space. Understanding the 3D trajectory of an object in flight can often be essential in examining variables relating to launch and landing conditions. Many systems exist to track the 3D motion of projectiles but are often constrained by space or the type of object the system can recognize (Qualisys, Göteborg, Sweden; Vicon, Oxford, United Kingdom; Opti-Track, Corvallis, Oregon USA; Motion Analysis, Santa Rosa, California USA; Flight Scope, Orlando, Florida USA). These technologies can also be quite expensive, often costing hundreds of thousand dollars. …

Biomarker Detection At Risk Forecasting Level Using Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence Combined With Surface Acoustic Wave, Jun Liu Nov 2016

Biomarker Detection At Risk Forecasting Level Using Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence Combined With Surface Acoustic Wave, Jun Liu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) technique is used to lower the detection limit of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) which is able to be utilized in forecasting the risk of having certain kinds of cancers, especially colon and rectal cancer. By incubating silver nanocubes (Ag NCs) on the surface of the chips, the detection limit goes down to below 1ng/mL of CEA. Also, when combining MEF with surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices, the incubation time between antigen and antibody will decrease significantly with the fluorescence signal keeping similar or higher level.

The Effect Of The Antecedent Dry Conditions On Nitrogen Removal For A Modified Bioretention System, Mackenzie Peterson Nov 2016

The Effect Of The Antecedent Dry Conditions On Nitrogen Removal For A Modified Bioretention System, Mackenzie Peterson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Eutrophication is defined as the ‘over enrichment’ of a water body from nutrients, resulting in uncontrolled growth of primary producers, leading to periods of oxygen depletion from decomposition of the algal organic matter. According to the 2010 Water Infrastructure Needs and Investment (a U.S. Congressional Report), 40% of U.S. water bodies are contaminated with pollutants, including nutrients. Non-point sources of nutrient pollution are a major cause of this reduction in water quality. One way to decrease eutrophication is to manage nutrients found in stormwater runoff, before they reach a receiving water body.

Bioretention cells containing an internal water storage zone …

ODT (one-dimensional turbulence) simulations of particle-carrier gas interactions are performed in the jet flow configuration. Particles with different diameters are injected onto the centerline of a turbulent air jet. The particles are passive and do not impact the fluid phase. Their radial dispersion and axial velocities are obtained as functions of axial position. The time and length scales of the jet are varied through control of the jet exit velocity and nozzle diameter. Dispersion data at long times of flight for the nozzle diameter (7 mm), particle diameters (60 and 90 µm), and Reynolds numbers (10, 000–30, 000) are …

Abstract— Localization and mapping algorithms can allow a robot to navigate well in an unknown environment. However, whether such algorithms enhance any specific robot mission is currently a matter for empirical validation. In this paper we apply our MissionLab/VIPARS mission design and verification approach to an autonomous robot mission that uses probabilistic localization software.

Two approaches to modeling probabilistic localization for verification are presented: a high-level approach, and a sample-based approach which allows run-time code to be embedded in verification. Verification and experimental validation results are presented for two different missions, each using each method, demonstrating the accuracy …
