Utilizing High Resolution Bus Gps Data To Visualize And Identify Congestion Hot-Spots In Urban, Nicholas B. Stoll, Travis B. Glick, Miguel Figliozzi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Congestion and travel delay on urban roadways can influence the roadways’ operating costs and service attractiveness. This research used high-resolution bus data to examine sources of delay on urban arterials. A set of tools was created to help visualize trends in bus behavior and movement; these tools allowed larger traffic trends to be visualized along urban corridors and streets. With buses as probes and examining aggregated bus behavior, contoured speed plots were used to understand the behavior of roadways outside the zone of influence of bus stops. Speed plots were used to discover trends and travel patterns with only a …

M2 Internal Tides And Their Observed Wavenumber Spectra From Satellite Altimetry, Richard D. Ray, Edward D. Zaron Jan 2016

M2 Internal Tides And Their Observed Wavenumber Spectra From Satellite Altimetry, Richard D. Ray, Edward D. Zaron

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A near-global chart of surface elevations associated with the stationary M2 internal tide is empirically constructed from multimission satellite altimeter data. An advantage of a strictly empirical mapping approach is that results are independent of assumptions about ocean wave dynamics and, in fact, can be used to test such assumptions. A disadvantage is that present-day altimeter coverage is only marginally adequate to support mapping such short-wavelength features. Moreover, predominantly north–south ground-track orientations and contamination from nontidal oceanographic variability can lead to deficiencies in mapped tides. Independent data from Cryosphere Satellite-2 (CryoSat-2) and other altimeters are used to …

A Comprehensive Model Of The Transport Phenomena In Gas Metal Arc Welding, Junling Hu, Zhenghua Rao, Hai-Lung Tsai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A comprehensive two-dimensional gas metal arc welding (GMAW) model was developed to take into account all the interactive events in the gas metal arc welding process, including the arc plasma, melting of the electrode, droplet formation, detachment, transfer, and impingement onto the workpiece, and the weld-pool dynamics and weld formation. The comprehensive GMAW model tracks the free surface using the volume of fluid method and directly modeled the coupling effects between the arc domain and the metal domain, thus eliminating the need to assign boundary conditions at the interface. A thorough investigation of the plasma arc characteristics was conducted to …

Creating Rigid Foldability To Enable Mobility Of Origami-Inspired Mechanisms, Alden Yellowhorse, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

Rigidly foldable origami crease patterns can be translated into corresponding rigid mechanisms with at least one degree of freedom. However, origami crease patterns of interest for engineering applications are not always rigidly foldable, and designers trying to adapt a crease pattern may be confronted with the need to add more mobility to their design. This paper presents design guidelines for making alterations to a crease pattern to make it rigidly foldable. Adding creases, removing panels and splitting creases are presented as potential alterations for increasing mobility, and approaches for determining the position and number of alterations are discussed. This paper …

Low-Velocity Impact To High-Temperature Low-Sag Overhead Conductors, Daniel Halka Waters Jan 2016

Low-Velocity Impact To High-Temperature Low-Sag Overhead Conductors, Daniel Halka Waters

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High-Temperature Low-Sag (HTLS) conductors, such as Aluminum Conductor Composite Core (ACCC), improve infrastructure to support the delivery of power to meet the nation's increasing demand for electricity. Their response to low-velocity impacts during transportation, installation or in service, however, has not been addressed in the past. Therefore, this study investigates both experimentally and numerically mechanical effects associated with transverse low-velocity impacts on energy dissipation by the conductors subjected to either free or constrained end conditions and large axial tensile loads. Impact experiments were conducted using a newly designed and manufactured testing apparatus. The experimental work was strongly supported by non-linear …

Anatomy, Implant Selection And Placement Influence Spine Mechanics Associated With Total Disc Replacement, Justin F.M. Hollenbeck Jan 2016

Anatomy, Implant Selection And Placement Influence Spine Mechanics Associated With Total Disc Replacement, Justin F.M. Hollenbeck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Through aging and injury, the intervertebral disc of the lumbar spine can undergo degeneration, leading to collapse of the vertebrae and low back pain, a symptom that affects half the adult population in any given year. In an effort to reduce low back pain, total disc replacement treatment removes the degenerated disc, restores natural height and lordosis of the segment, and preserves motion at the joint. Patient anatomy, implant selection, and implant placement play significant roles in a patient's outcomes after total disc replacement surgery. Thus, the objective of the work presented in this thesis was to develop a suite …

Regional Mechanical Properties And Microstructure Of Ovine Heart Chambers, Shahnaz Javani Jan 2016

Regional Mechanical Properties And Microstructure Of Ovine Heart Chambers, Shahnaz Javani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mechanical properties of cardiac tissue play an important role in the normal heart function. As a baseline for understanding of physiology and pathophysiology of the heart, and for development and validation of new therapies, it is crucial to first understand the mechanical behavior of the normal heart tissue. Although heart chambers have the same embryonic origin, differences in the development of mechanical properties are expected to manifest over time during the adulthood period. Therefore, the goal of this study was to determine the passive mechanical properties of all heart chambers through a paired comparison study in an ovine model. Ovine …

Multiscale Musculoskeletal Modeling Of The Lower Limb To Perform Personalized Simulations Of Movement, Alessandro Navacchia Jan 2016

Multiscale Musculoskeletal Modeling Of The Lower Limb To Perform Personalized Simulations Of Movement, Alessandro Navacchia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Computational modeling has been used for many decades to inform design and decision-making in several fields of engineering, such as aerospace, automotive, petroleum, and others. However, it still struggles to have a similar impact in fields of medicine, such as orthopaedics. Three of the challenges that have limited the use of computational modeling in the clinical practice and in product development are model validation, personalization, and realism. Validation is a challenge because several internal parameters of the human body, such as muscle forces, are not safely measurable in vivo and, consequently, a thorough comparison between model outputs …

Magnetoelastic Beam With Extended Polymer For Low Frequency Vibration Energy Harvesting, Alwathiqbellah Ibrahim, Shahrzad Towfighian, Mohammad I. Younis, Quang Su

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship

Ambient energy in the form of mechanical kinetic energy is mostly considered waste energy. The process of scavenging and storing such energy is known as energy harvesting. Energy harvesting from mechanical vibration is performed using resonant energy harvesters (EH) with two major goals: enhancing the power scavenged at low frequency sources of vibrations, and increasing the efficiency of scavenging energy by increasing the bandwidth near the resonant frequency. Toward such goals, we propose a piezoelectric EH of a composite cantilever beam with a tip magnet facing another magnet at a distance. The composite cantilever consists of a piezoelectric bimorph with …

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

The Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) satellite contains six science instruments that are integrated into a small volume on a single payload interface plate (PIP). Integrating these six instruments onto a single deck was challenging and complex in part due to their different physical configurations. After investigating various methods of reducing integration schedule and risk, an innovative approach of creating a high-fidelity full-scale mockup using 3D printed parts was chosen to address these concerns. This mockup included all instruments, the PIP, and associated harnessing, plumbing, and blanketing components. While the mockup integration effort yielded invaluable information for the flight payload integration, …

Period Batch Control - A Production Planning System Applied To Virtual Manufacturing Cells, Z. Tesic, B. Stevanaov, V. Jovanovic, M. Tomic, C. Kafol

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Period Batch Control (PBC) system has been known for its implementation with the classical group technology (GT) cells, and it has been known for its simplicity. The main production planning decisions concern the choice of the period length and the stage number and contents. Also, in order to better integrate the production planning with the application of GT cells at the shop floor, the concept of virtual manufacturing cells has been applied. Since virtual cells configurations are changing periodically, a model for implementing the PBC system into virtual manufacturing cells environment is developed. The model enables alignment of the PBC …

Recent changes in the needs of the military have caused the U.S. Navy to spend more time out to sea. Longer deployments limit the time available for performing maintenance and for training their technicians. The Navy is also steadily reducing the number of sailors manning each vessel, therefore requiring more automated systems to keep the ships at sea and in total readiness. To meet this need, industrial automation systems are being investigated as replacements and upgrades for the military systems that have been used for years in warship designs. This will require ship repair partners, both military and civilian, to …

Quantitative Assessment Of Secondary Flows Of Single-Phase Fluid Through Pipe Bends, Z. Kaldy, O. Ayala

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Single-phase fluid flow was simulated passing through various three dimensional pipe elbows. The simulations varied by Reynolds number, curvature ratios, and sweep angles and were all conducted using the k-e model available in COMSOL Multiphysics 5.1. The intent of this research was to qualitatively assess the flow characteristics under several different conditions. Many similarities were seen especially when comparing curvature ratios, the vorticity location for the turbulent cases show near identical behavior at the elbow midsection. One of the variables quantified in this paper is the maximum secondary velocity module which shows increasing values until the midsection of the elbow.

Secondary Flow Of Liquid-Liquid Two-Phase Fluids In A Pipe Bend, M. Ayala, P. Santos, G. Hamester, O. Ayala

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

A simulated study of oil and water in 90 degree bend was carried on COMSOL 5.1 to characterize flow pattern and analyze the secondary flow. The Euler-Euler k-e Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes model was used to represent the fluid motion. Changes in the Reynolds number, curvature ratio and direction of gravity were made to evaluate the effects in the intensity of the secondary flow. In the end, it was possible to see that the bend direction does not affect the formation of secondary flow for Reynolds above 100,000. It appears that the fluid behavior on the pipe bend is strongly related …

In this study, the authors developed three new approaches and models for improvements related to manufacturing processes. The main focus was on planning in a digital environment before the actual manufacturing process is carried out. The first approach is digital manufacturing, which gives affords the opportunity for performing an entire manufacturing process in a virtual environment. In this way, engineers virtually define, plan, create, monitor, and control all production processes. The planning phase can be done simultaneously, while other manufacturing processes are already in place. In this way, processes can continue with no interruption. Various product lifecycle management tools have …

Dissertations and Theses

Many mathematical models have focused on growth of a single tumor with their spreading rate with some have included its metastasis. Some of the earlier models focus on exponential growth and its shift with time on to a linear model. The Gompertzian model involves a quadratic terms and that limit growth. We looked into Iwata et al paper it discusses a different model and takes into account the growth and metastasis of a tumor population but does not look into tumor shrinking or chemotherapy. Our new model focuses on the extending Iwata et al model to take into account tumor …

Direct Current Stimulation Modulates Ltp And Ltd: Activity-Dependence And Dendritic Effects, Gregory Kronberg Jan 2016

Direct Current Stimulation Modulates Ltp And Ltd: Activity-Dependence And Dendritic Effects, Gregory Kronberg

Dissertations and Theses

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been reported to improve various forms of learning in humans. Stimulation is often applied during training, producing lasting enhancements that are specific to the learned task. These learning effects are thought be mediated by altered synaptic plasticity. However, the effects of DCS during the induction of endogenous synaptic plasticity remain largely unexplored. To model endogenous plasticity I induced long-term potentiation (LTP) and depression (LTD) at Schaffer collateral synapses in CA1 of rat hippocampal slices. When induction was paired with concurrent DCS, the resulting plasticity was biased towards potentiation, such that LTP was enhanced and …

Innovative System For Seismic Control Strategies, Seyed Ali Razavi Jan 2016

Innovative System For Seismic Control Strategies, Seyed Ali Razavi

Dissertations and Theses

Among various alternative approaches, installing auxiliary damping devices such as tuned mass dampers (TMDs) is a very reliable solution to mitigate wind-induced vibration of tall buildings. However, regardless of the different distribution strategies, installing TMD systems means adding additional masses to tall buildings. A valuable space on top of tall buildings is sacrificed to contain a large bulky mass, which is not aesthetically pleasing. Furthermore, increasing the mass of tall buildings by installing extra mass systems is not time and cost effective process. In order to address the issues, this paper investigates the utilization of feasible alternative for the purpose …

Facilitating Deployable Mechanisms And Structures Via Developable Lamina Emergent Arrays, Larry L. Howell, Robert J. Lang, Spencer P. Magleby, Todd G. Nelson, Nathan A. Pherson

Faculty Publications

A method is presented utilizing networks of lamina emergent joints, known as lamina emergent arrays, to accommodate large-curvature developable structures suited to deployable applications. By exploiting the ruling lines in developable surfaces, this method enables developable structures and mechanisms that can be manufactured with two-dimensional geometry and yet have a greater range of elastic motion than is possible with a solid sheet of material. Aligning the joints to the ruling lines also biases the structure to a specific deployment path. A mathematical model is developed to describe the resulting stiffness of the structure employing the lamina emergent arrays and equations …
