Heterogeneous Dynamic Spectrum Access In Cognitive Radio Enabled Vehicular Networks Using Network Softwarization, Swetha R. Reddy

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Dynamic spectrum access (DSA) in cognitive radio networks (CRNs) is regarded as an emerging technology to solve the spectrum scarcity problem created by static spectrum allocation. In DSA, unlicensed users access idle channels opportunistically, without creating any harmful interference to licensed users. This method will also help to incorporate billions of wireless devices for different applications such as Internet-of-Things, cyber-physical systems, smart grids, etc. Vehicular networks for intelligent transportation cyber-physical systems is emerging concept to improve transportation security and reliability. IEEE 802.11p standard comprising of 7 channels is dedicated for vehicular communications. These channels could be highly congested and may …

Distributed Sparse Signal Recovery In Networked Systems, Puxiao Han Jan 2016

Distributed Sparse Signal Recovery In Networked Systems, Puxiao Han

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, two classes of distributed algorithms are developed for sparse signal recovery in large sensor networks. All the proposed approaches consist of local computation (LC) and global computation (GC) steps carried out by a group of distributed local sensors, and do not require the local sensors to know the global sensing matrix. These algorithms are based on the original approximate message passing (AMP) and iterative hard thresholding (IHT) algorithms in the area of compressed sensing (CS), also known as sparse signal recovery. For distributed AMP (DiAMP), we develop a communication-efficient algorithm GCAMP. Numerical results demonstrate that it outperforms …

Spatio-Temporal Progression Of Cortical Activity Related To Continuous Overt And Covert Speech Production In A Reading Task, Jonathan S. Brumberg, Dean J. Krusienski, Shreya Chakrabarti, Aysegul Gunduz, Peter Brunner, Anthony L. Ritaccio, Gerwin Schalk Jan 2016

Spatio-Temporal Progression Of Cortical Activity Related To Continuous Overt And Covert Speech Production In A Reading Task, Jonathan S. Brumberg, Dean J. Krusienski, Shreya Chakrabarti, Aysegul Gunduz, Peter Brunner, Anthony L. Ritaccio, Gerwin Schalk

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

How the human brain plans, executes, and monitors continuous and fluent speech has remained largely elusive. For example, previous research has defined the cortical locations most important for different aspects of speech function, but has not yet yielded a definition of the temporal progression of involvement of those locations as speech progresses either overtly or covertly. In this paper, we uncovered the spatio-temporal evolution of neuronal population-level activity related to continuous overt speech, and identified those locations that shared activity characteristics across overt and covert speech. Specifically, we asked subjects to repeat continuous sentences aloud or silently while we recorded …

A Frequency Hopping Method To Detect Replay Attacks, Guofu Tang Jan 2016

A Frequency Hopping Method To Detect Replay Attacks, Guofu Tang

LSU Master's Theses

The application of information technology in network control systems introduces the potential threats to the future industrial control system. The malicious attacks undermine the security of network control system, which could cause a huge economic loss. This thesis studies a particular cyber attack called the replay attack, which is motivated by the Stuxnet worm allegedly used against the nuclear facilities in Iran. For replay attack, this thesis injects the narrow-band signal into control signal and adopts the spectrum estimation approach to test the estimation residue. In order to protect the information of the injected signal from knowing by attackers, the …

Expandable Proppants For Hydraulic Fracturing, Livio Yang Santos Jan 2016

Expandable Proppants For Hydraulic Fracturing, Livio Yang Santos

LSU Master's Theses

Hydraulic fracturing is recognized as the primary technique to achieve economic oil and gas production from low permeability reservoirs like shale and tight-sand formations. One of the main challenges facing the oil and gas industry is maintaining the proppant functionality in the subsurface where replacement of proppant is only possible by expensive refracturing operations. Proppant crushing and proppant embedment have posed challenges for sustainable production from stimulated wells especially in soft and deep formations like Haynesville Shales. Experimental measurements show the strong impact of proppant stress and proppant embedment on reducing fracture conductivity. In this work, we introduce a new …

Enhancing Program Soft Error Resilience Through Algorithmic Approaches, Sui Chen Jan 2016

Enhancing Program Soft Error Resilience Through Algorithmic Approaches, Sui Chen

LSU Master's Theses

The rising count and shrinking feature size of transistors within modern computers is making them increasingly vulnerable to various types of soft faults. This problem is especially acute in high-performance computing (HPC) systems used for scientific computing, because these systems include many thousands of compute cores and nodes, all of which may be utilized in a single large-scale run. The increasing vulnerability of HPC applications to errors induced by soft faults is motivating extensive work on techniques to make these applications more resilient to such faults, ranging from generic techniques such as replication or checkpoint/restart to algorithm-specific error detection and …

Effects Of Temperature Segregation On The Denisity And Mechanical Properties Of Asphalt Mixtures, Pranjal Pravin Phaltane Jan 2016

Effects Of Temperature Segregation On The Denisity And Mechanical Properties Of Asphalt Mixtures, Pranjal Pravin Phaltane

LSU Master's Theses

Temperature differentials (TD) between the target laydown and actual laydown temperatures of asphalt paving mixtures have been noticed and measured since the late 1990s. Since then, numerous research studies conducted on the phenomena found inconclusive conclusions regarding the effects of TD on the initial pavement quality and the long-term performance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different levels of TD on the initial quality and the long-term performance of asphalt pavements by evaluating the core density and laboratory measured performance characteristics, respectively. Through the evaluation, it was also aimed to ascertain and establish allowable TD …

Hydrodynamic Modeling Of Newly Emergent Coastal Deltaic Floodplains, Alexandra Christensen Jan 2016

Hydrodynamic Modeling Of Newly Emergent Coastal Deltaic Floodplains, Alexandra Christensen

LSU Master's Theses

Coastal deltaic floodplains provide an important ecosystem service by removing or retaining nitrate from enriched riverine water. Wetland plants, soils, and microbes within these floodplains use nitrate through uptake, burial, and denitrification, thereby reducing the impact of nitrate on algal blooms and hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico. However, these processes depend on the physical, biological, and chemical conditions within the floodplain. Understanding and characterizing the hydrodynamics of these systems and the relative impact of river, tide, and wind forcings are the first steps in understanding the biogeochemical processes controlling nitrate removal. Motivated by the desire to identify biogeochemical hotspots …

Development Of Microfluidic Devices To Study Algal Chemotaxis And Long-Term Growth Dynamics, Benjamin Seth Roberts Jan 2016

Development Of Microfluidic Devices To Study Algal Chemotaxis And Long-Term Growth Dynamics, Benjamin Seth Roberts

LSU Master's Theses

Harmful algal blooms pose a threat to human health and the environment. Many complex factors influence their formation and development, and much is still unknown. One major influencing factor that is well-known yet poorly studied is algal chemotaxis. Many studies have examined chemotaxis in other organisms, but very little about chemotaxis in algae has been studied, largely because existing technology and assay techniques are inadequate. Microfluidics offers many possibilities for cell biology, and has been applied to the study of chemotaxis in other organisms already. These techniques can be applied to the study of algal chemotaxis as well. We present …

A Mixed Consensus And Fuzzy Approach To Position Control Of Four-Wheeled Vehicles, Bita Hasheminezhad Jan 2016

A Mixed Consensus And Fuzzy Approach To Position Control Of Four-Wheeled Vehicles, Bita Hasheminezhad

LSU Master's Theses

Autonomous driving is a growing domain of intelligent transportation systems that utilizes communications to autonomously control cooperative vehicles. This thesis presents a multi-agent solution to the platoon control problem. First, an adaptive controller on linearized longitudinal dynamics of a vehicle is applied to assure vehicles are able to track their reference velocities. Then, an agent-based consensus approach is studied which enables multiple vehicles driving together where each vehicle can follow its predecessor at a close distance, safely. To deal with unexpected events, a fuzzy controller is added to the reference signal of the consensus controller. Simulation results are provided to …

Hydrodynamic Simulations Of The Prototype Mississippi River And Expanded Small-Scale Physical Model To Investigate Impact Of Sea Level Rise, Linsey Brooke Olivier Jan 2016

Hydrodynamic Simulations Of The Prototype Mississippi River And Expanded Small-Scale Physical Model To Investigate Impact Of Sea Level Rise, Linsey Brooke Olivier

LSU Master's Theses

The Expanded Small-Scale Physical Model (ESSPM) is a distorted-scale, moveable bed model that will complement numerical and field studies studying management strategies in the lower ~140 miles of the Mississippi River and their effect on flooding, navigation and coastal restoration. It is recognized that relative sea level rise (RSLR), the combination of eustatic sea level rise (ESLR) and subsidence, will have an impact on the hydraulics and sediment transport in the lower River. However, it is physically impossible to replicate subsidence in the ESSPM; thus, future RSLR conditions will be experimentally simulated by raising Gulf of Mexico (GoM) levels commensurate …

New Archiving, Fingering, And Assessing Techniques For Sheet Music Using Advanced Signal Processing Approaches, Ting-Chen Hsu

LSU Master's Theses

In this thesis, advanced signal processing techniques are proposed to archive the musical scores, guide the novice pianists to play piano with appropriate fingerings, and assess the harmonization for musical composition. The mathematical frameworks for these three applications are established and the corresponding optimization problems are formulated. The optimal solutions are also provided. First, the hard- and soft-archiving approaches for storing and distributing musical scores are investigated. By use of the popular musical scripting language, LilyPond, as the intermediate data format, we propose to encode the LilyPond script, which is converted from the original musical score, to the two-dimensional quick-response …

3-D Printed Conveyor For Continuous-Mode Cryopreservation Of Individual Samples, Melissa Kaye Eskridge Jan 2016

3-D Printed Conveyor For Continuous-Mode Cryopreservation Of Individual Samples, Melissa Kaye Eskridge

LSU Master's Theses

Lack of standardization of terminology and protocols, combined with limited access to freezing equipment due to cost constraints and lack of portability, has created a need for inexpensive cryopreservation devices. Distribution of standardized methods of freezing cells would enable the development and adoption of standards on materials and protocols. Some cryopreservation methods are limited by the amount of cells available and the toxicity of certain cryopreservation agents. These studies would benefit from the ability to cool individual samples. All commercially available and proposed cooling devices operate by cooling batches of samples at the same time. The cryopreservation conveyor was designed …

In this study, the feedback signals are first collected …

A Comparison Between Functional And Traditional Interface Displays In Support Of Console Operator Performance And Workload, Sophie Lynn Schwartz Jan 2016

A Comparison Between Functional And Traditional Interface Displays In Support Of Console Operator Performance And Workload, Sophie Lynn Schwartz

LSU Master's Theses

In the petrochemical industry, schematic interfaces have been traditionally used as the main interface for console operators to monitor activities. There is limited research in this industry investigating alternative interface types to better support console operator’s decisions during alarm management. Furthermore, even less of that research includes eye-tracking as a measure for console operator situation awareness (SA). This research aimed to investigate an alternative interface, called a functional interface, in its level of support of console operator situation awareness, accuracy, subjective workload, and average response time. Additionally, eye-tracking was incorporated to explore its value as measure for situation awareness on …

Driver Engagement In Secondary Tasks: Behavioral Analysis And Crash Risk Assessment, Mengqiu Ye Jan 2016

Driver Engagement In Secondary Tasks: Behavioral Analysis And Crash Risk Assessment, Mengqiu Ye

LSU Master's Theses

Distracted driving has long been acknowledged as one of the leading causes of death or injury in roadway crashes. The focus of past research has been mainly on the change in driving performance due to distracted driving. However, only a few studies attempted to predict the type of distraction based on driving performance measures. In addition, past studies have proven that driving performance is influenced by the drivers’ socioeconomic characteristics, while not many studies have attempted to quantify that influence. In essence, this study utilizes the rich SHRP 2 Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS) database to (a) develop a model for …

The Influence Of Soil Properties On Marsh Edge Erosion, Cody Lee Johnson Jan 2016

The Influence Of Soil Properties On Marsh Edge Erosion, Cody Lee Johnson

LSU Master's Theses

Coastal Louisiana exhibits some of the highest rates of land conversion to open water in the world. This is most apparent in Terrebonne Bay, Barataria Bay, and Breton Sound (Couvillion et. al, 2011). The hypothesis is made that locally generated wind waves are responsible for the observed land loss. Recent research has attempted to relate the marsh edge erosion rate to wave energy flux density. Under the appropriate assumptions, this relationship is modeled reasonably well by a linear relationship between erosion rate and wave energy flux. Such a model is a valuable tool for coastal resource management. A deficiency of …

Biodegradation Of Buried Mc252 Oil In Coastal Beach Sands By Pah Degraders In Response To Oxygen Biostimulation, Leeann Renee Fitch Jan 2016

Biodegradation Of Buried Mc252 Oil In Coastal Beach Sands By Pah Degraders In Response To Oxygen Biostimulation, Leeann Renee Fitch

LSU Master's Theses

Six years following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, buried MC252 oil persists on a beach segment in Fourchon, LA due to the natural anaerobic conditions of tidal groundwater. A field trial of in situ aerobic bioremediation of buried oil began on July 2015. Oxygen was added to the subsurface using Waterloo emitters which deliver O2 through diffusion via pressurized tubing in fixed groundwater wells. The multi-well injection system provided sufficient oxygen concentration in the groundwater in the immediate area of the emitters, resulting in a shift in the composition of the diverse, halophilic, hydrocarbon-degrading microbial population. Stable isotopic and radiocarbon …

The FE models were validated based on field stress and strain …

Single-Family Housing Construction Cost In The Greater Baton Rouge Area, Justin Pierce Estes Jan 2016

Single-Family Housing Construction Cost In The Greater Baton Rouge Area, Justin Pierce Estes

LSU Master's Theses

Most research focused on housing costs has noted a paucity of empirical cost data for residential construction, and researchers have suggested that collecting these data for individual metropolitan areas is ideal. The goal of this study is to obtain these data and compare them to national average sources to determine how well national data represent local costs. Data collection included obtaining prices from big box stores and through a survey of local Baton Rouge residential contractors for material, square foot and assembly costs for the major components of a house (i.e. foundation, wall, roof). From the material cost data evaluated, …

An Architecture For Configuring An Efficient Scan Path For A Subset Of Elements, Arash Ashrafi Jan 2016

An Architecture For Configuring An Efficient Scan Path For A Subset Of Elements, Arash Ashrafi

LSU Master's Theses

LaTeX4Web 1.4 OUTPUT Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) have many modern applications. A feature of FPGAs is that they can be reconfigured to suit the computation. One such form of reconfiguration, called partial reconfiguration (PR), allows part of the chip to be altered. The smallest part that can be reconfigured is called a frame. To reconfigure a frame, a fixed number of configuration bits are input (typically from outside) to the frame. Thus PR involves (a) selecting a subset C Í S of k out of n frames to configure and (b) inputting the configuration bits for these k frames. …

The Supercritical Pyrolysis Of 1-Octene, Elizabeth Anne Hurst Jan 2016

The Supercritical Pyrolysis Of 1-Octene, Elizabeth Anne Hurst

LSU Master's Theses

In the pre-combustion environment, fuels for future high-speed aircrafts are predicted to take on increasing heat loads in their role as the primary coolant in order to remove excess heat from engine subsystems. While acting in this role, these fuels are expected to experience temperatures and pressures up to 700 °C and 130 atm, conditions which are supercritical for jet fuels and most hydrocarbons. Such extreme conditions can cause fuel decomposition and subsequent pyrolytic reactions, which can lead to the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). PAH are precursors to solids deposits that clog fuel-delivery lines, causing reduced engine performance …

Microfluidic Device For Motility And Osmolality Analysis Of Zebrafish Sperm, Jacob Ethan Beckham Jan 2016

Microfluidic Device For Motility And Osmolality Analysis Of Zebrafish Sperm, Jacob Ethan Beckham

LSU Master's Theses

An increasing number of laboratories are evaluating sample quality via motility analysis by means of computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) after sperm activation by manual dilution and mixing. Even with the use of CASA, due to user variation, there is a lack of control over the activation process, resulting in inconsistent motility analysis. Low sample volume (~1-2µL), and a short motility duration (burst motility of less than 15s) add to the complexity of these difficulties. The objectives of this study were to develop a microfluidic device with the capabilities to (1) standardize the method of activation for zebrafish sperm so that …

Extensive Sensitivity Analysis And Parallel Stochastic Global Optimization Using Radial Basis Functions Of Integrated Biorefineries Under Operational Level Uncertainties, Santiago David Salas Ortiz

LSU Master's Theses

This work presents a decision-making framework for global optimization of detailed renewable energy processes considering technological uncertainty. The critical uncertain sources are identified with an efficient computational method for global sensitivity analysis, and are obtained in two different ways, simultaneously and independently per product pathway respect to the objective function. For global optimization, the parallel stochastic response surface method developed by Regis & Shoemaker (2009) is employed. This algorithm is based on the multi-start local metric stochastic response surface method explored by the same authors (2007a). The aforementioned algorithm uses as response surface model a radial basis function (RBF) for …

Flood Damage And Shutdown Times For Industrial Process Facilities, Matthew Lane Flynn Jan 2016

Flood Damage And Shutdown Times For Industrial Process Facilities, Matthew Lane Flynn

LSU Master's Theses

The vulnerability of the Gulf Coast to inundation poses a real threat to both national security and the regional economy due to the concentration of the nation’s energy infrastructure throughout the waterways of the southeastern United States’ waterways. Mitigation efforts thus far have been qualitative and fail to provide raw, quantitative data to aid in the successful management of flooding liabilities. This paper proposes a novel approach to analyzing infrastructure susceptibility by means of a component-based approach to consequences posed by water-borne incursions. Systems are simplified to collections of components, each with a lowest-member elevation, thereby identifying the benchmark for …
