Human Factors Issues And The Risk Of High Voltage Equipment: Are Standards Sufficient To Ensure Safety By Design?, Maria Chiara Leva, Roberta Pirani, Micaela De Michela, Luke Clancy

Articles

High voltage equipment is mostly designed according to technically prescriptive standards requirements based on electrical engineering safety principles. However a more risk-based approach to standards and regulation may be advisable to enable designer and user to take an active role in establishing that their installation is inherently safe. The use of Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) for instance is enabling the new substation to be housed indoors and condensed into around one quarter of the space. The manufacturers argue that design improvements in GIS make it virtually “maintenance free”, comply with all the relevant standards. However some of these improvements have …

A Biomimetic, Energy-Harvesting, Obstacle-Avoiding, Path-Planning Algorithm For Uavs, Snorri Gudmundsson

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This dissertation presents two new approaches to energy harvesting for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). One method is based on the Potential Flow Method (PFM); the other method seeds a wind-field map based on updraft peak analysis and then applies a variant of the Bellman-Ford algorithm to find the minimum-cost path. Both methods are enhanced by taking into account the performance characteristics of the aircraft using advanced performance theory. The combined approach yields five possible trajectories from which the one with the minimum energy cost is selected. The dissertation concludes by using the developed theory and modeling tools to simulate the …

Articles

The Total Operations Management for Safety Critical Activities (TOSCA) project is aimed at developing a safety management framework that integrates best practices, tools and methods for functional analysis, risk assessment, interactive emergency scenarios analysis, performance monitoring, design review, training and knowledge management. The TOSCA approach is described by a T-model based around a central ‘Common Operational Picture’ (COP) that holds information regarding the operational system, and is used to support risk assessment and management. The information held in the COP may be represented in different ways but should be accessible to all stakeholders in order to analyse and communicate risk, …

Maximizing The Spatial Representativeness Of No2 Monitoring Data Using A Combination Of Local Wind-Based Sectoral Division And Seasonal And Diurnal Correction Factors, Aoife Donnelly, Owen Naughton, Bruce Misstear, Brian Broderick Jan 2016

Maximizing The Spatial Representativeness Of No2 Monitoring Data Using A Combination Of Local Wind-Based Sectoral Division And Seasonal And Diurnal Correction Factors, Aoife Donnelly, Owen Naughton, Bruce Misstear, Brian Broderick

Articles

This article describes a new methodology for increasing the spatial representativeness of individual monitoring sites. Air pollution levels at a given point are influenced by emission sources in the immediate vicinity. Since emission sources are rarely uniformly distributed around a site, concentration levels will inevitably be most affected by the sources in the prevailing upwind direction. The methodology provides a means of capturing this effect and providing additional information regarding source/pollution relationships. The methodology allows for the division of the air quality data from a given monitoring site into a number of sectors or wedges based on wind direction and …

Molecular Simulation Studies Of Hydrophobins Near Gas, Oil And Water Interfaces, Yuwu Chen Jan 2016

Molecular Simulation Studies Of Hydrophobins Near Gas, Oil And Water Interfaces, Yuwu Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation contains fundamental, classical molecular simulation studies of the properties of hydrophobins (a unique family of surface-active proteins produced by filamentous fungi in soil) near interfaces involving gas, oil, water, organic solvents and polymers. These studies are relevant to possibly using hydrophobins as natural oil dispersants and in processing of polymers. Preliminary studies by the Russo group suggest that these small surface-active proteins can encapsulate oil, gases and polymers in cylindrical structures. We have performed classic molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and potential of mean force (PMF) calculations of a class I hydrophobin EAS using both all-atom and coarse-grained representations. …

Growth Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons During The Supercritical Pyrolysis Of N-Decane, Subramanian Venkateswaran Kalpathy Jan 2016

Growth Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons During The Supercritical Pyrolysis Of N-Decane, Subramanian Venkateswaran Kalpathy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In order to serve a dual role as a propellant and as a coolant, fuels in the pre-combustion environment of future high-speed aircraft will be exposed to temperatures and pressures of up to 700 °C and 130 atm—conditions that are supercritical for jet fuels. Under such conditions, fuel can undergo pyrolytic reactions leading to the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which are precursors to fuel-line solid deposits that can hinder safe operation of the aircraft. Therefore, to prevent solid deposit formation, it is extremely important to understand the PAH formation pathways in the supercritical fuel pyrolysis environment. To better …

Conjunctive Management Of Water Resources Under Climate Change Projection Uncertainty, Amir Mani Jan 2016

Conjunctive Management Of Water Resources Under Climate Change Projection Uncertainty, Amir Mani

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Goal of this study is to investigate the impacts of climate change projection uncertainty on conjunctive use of water resources. To pursue this goal first, a conjunctive-use model is developed for management of groundwater and surface water resources via mixed integer linear fractional programming (MILFP). The conjunctive management model maximizes the ratio of groundwater usage to reservoir water usage. A conditional head constraint is imposed to maintain groundwater sustainability. A transformation approach is introduced to transform the conditional head constraint into a set of mixed integer linear constraints in terms of groundwater head. A supply network is proposed to apply …

Statistical Reservoir Characterization, Simulation, And Optimization Of Field Scale-Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (Gagd) Process With Uncertainty Assessments, Watheq Jasim Mohammed Al-Mudhafar Jan 2016

Statistical Reservoir Characterization, Simulation, And Optimization Of Field Scale-Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (Gagd) Process With Uncertainty Assessments, Watheq Jasim Mohammed Al-Mudhafar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Unlike the Continuous Gas Injection (CGI) and Water-Alternative Gas (WAG), the Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (GAGD) process takes advantage of the natural segregation of reservoir fluids to provide gravity-stable oil displacement. The gas is injected through existing vertical wells to formulate a gas cap to allow oil and water drain down to the horizontal producer (s). Therefore, the GAGD process was implemented through immiscible and miscible injection modes to improve oil recovery in a sector of the main pay/upper sandstone member in the South Rumaila oil field, located in Iraq. A high-resolution geostatistical reservoir characterization model was constructed to model …

Increasing Off-Chip Bandwidth And Mitigating Dark Silicon Via Switchable Pins, Shaoming Chen Jan 2016

Increasing Off-Chip Bandwidth And Mitigating Dark Silicon Via Switchable Pins, Shaoming Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Off-chip memory bandwidth has been considered as one of the major limiting factors to processor performance, especially for multi-cores and many-cores. Conventional processor design allocates a large portion of off-chip pins to deliver power, leaving a small number of pins for processor signal communication. We observed that the processor requires much less power than that can be supplied during memory intensive stages in some cases. In this work, we propose a dynamic pin switch technique to alleviate the bandwidth limitation issue. The technique is introduced to dynamically exploit the surplus pins for power delivery in the memory intensive phases and …

3D geometric matching is the technique to detect the similar patterns among multiple objects. It is an important and fundamental problem and can facilitate many tasks in computer graphics and vision, including shape comparison and retrieval, data fusion, scene understanding and object recognition, and data restoration. For example, 3D scans of an object from different angles are matched and stitched together to form the complete geometry. In medical image analysis, the motion of deforming organs is modeled and predicted by matching a series of CT images. This problem is challenging and remains unsolved, especially when the similar patterns are 1) …

A Software Application For Cardiac-Gated Computerized Tomography Scanning, Stephen Caldwell, Trevor Engelsman

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Computerized tomography (CT) scans are a common clinical imaging procedure used worldwide. Operating in the X-Ray spectrum, these machines rotate scanners around a stationary body in order to compile two-dimensional images into a unified three-dimensional image. With adjustment to scan frequency and intensity, internal features such as muscles, organs, and tendons can easily be viewed. However, the heart has long evaded CT use due to its near-constant motion. Recently, cardiac-gated scans have entered the market as a technique to image the heart at a specific moment in time when it is nearly still - the quiescent period. Occurring during rapid …

Automated Solid-Substrate Cultivation Of The Anaerobic Bacterium Clostridium Thermocellum, Mathew J. Ruwaya

Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering

The organism Clostridium thermocellum grows on cellulosic substrates and produces ethanol, acetate, lactate, formic acid, and CO2. The organic acids produced alter the growth environment in which the bacteria grows and ultimately inhibit bacterial growth. One method which has been used successfully to maintain the system at acceptable growth conditions is to intermittently flush out the spent media and metabolic products and replace with new fermentation media. Our goal was to design and build an automated system that will automatically flush the spent media from the growing culture and resupply new media without manual intervention. An automated control …

Understanding Home Networks With Lightweight Privacy-Preserving Passive Measurement, Xuzi Zhou Jan 2016

Understanding Home Networks With Lightweight Privacy-Preserving Passive Measurement, Xuzi Zhou

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Homes are involved in a significant fraction of Internet traffic. However, meaningful and comprehensive information on the structure and use of home networks is still hard to obtain. The two main challenges in collecting such information are the lack of measurement infrastructure in the home network environment and individuals’ concerns about information privacy.

To tackle these challenges, the dissertation introduces Home Network Flow Logger (HNFL) to bring lightweight privacy-preserving passive measurement to home networks. The core of HNFL is a Linux kernel module that runs on resource-constrained commodity home routers to collect network traffic data from raw packets. Unlike prior …
