Strategies And Techniques For Fabricating Mems Bistable Thermal Actuators., Dilan Ratnayake
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bistable elements are beginning to appear in the field of MEMS as they allow engineers to design sensors and actuators which require no electrical power and possess mechanical memory. This research focuses on the development of novel strategies and techniques for fabricating MEMS bistable structures to serve as no electrical power thermal actuators. Two parallel strategies were explored for the design and fabrication of the critical bistable element. Both strategies involved an extensive material study on candidate thin film materials to determine their temperature coefficient of expansion and as-deposited internal stress properties. Materials investigated included titanium tungsten, Invar, silicon nitride …
An Integrated Economic Equilibrium Model For Electricity Markets., Swapna Pothabathula
An Integrated Economic Equilibrium Model For Electricity Markets., Swapna Pothabathula
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The increasing energy challenges worldwide are forcing researchers to explore ways for energy systems that work more efficiently on their own and with each other. This thesis develops an integrated electricity market equilibrium model (EMEM) as a mixed complementarity problem (MCP). In particular, we first develop an equilibrium model to study an electricity market consisting of coal producers, electricity generation firms, natural gas producers, natural gas marketers, natural gas pipeline owners, natural gas consumers and electricity consumers. The equilibrium model not only captures a decentralized optimization for each player but considers the interaction amongst players. Second, we formulate the equilibrium …
Experimental Observation Of The Relationship Between The Pressure Drop And Flow Rate Of Radial Flow Through Porous Media., Matthew William Okruch
Experimental Observation Of The Relationship Between The Pressure Drop And Flow Rate Of Radial Flow Through Porous Media., Matthew William Okruch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research experimentally observed the relationship between pressure drop and flow rate for high velocity, radial flow through porous media. The criterion for what represents high velocity is a function of the Reynold’s number of the flow. Pressure drop – flow rate curves were developed by flowing air and water through the porous carbon block samples. Each sample’s permeability was calculated from on the air test results. Each sample’s porosity was determined through digital microscope image analysis. Darcy’s Law, the Forchheimer equation, and the Ergun equation were converted to the radial flow domain and compared to the experimental data. The …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Order picking is the process of collecting goods and items in specified quantities from storage locations, in response to customer orders. Since many labor resources are involved in this process, finding ways to make it more efficient have been a primary goal for researchers and practitioners. Determining a better allocation of products to the storage areas, finding the best route and sequence to pick multiple products, and choosing the best picking policies to minimize congestion in the aisles are just a few of many objectives regarding order picking process. Due to regulatory compliances and the chance of product spoilage, additional …
Optimization Models And Algorithms For Demand Response In Smart Grid., Guangyang Xu
Optimization Models And Algorithms For Demand Response In Smart Grid., Guangyang Xu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For demand response in smart grid, a utility company wants to minimize total electricity cost and end users want to maximize their own utility. The latter is considered to consist of two parts in this research: electricity cost and convenience/comfort. We first develop a system optimal (SO) model and a user equilibrium (UE) model for the utility company and end users, respectively and compare the difference of the two. We consider users' possible preference on convenience over cost-saving under the real-time pricing in smart grid, and each user is assumed to have a preferred time window for using a particular …

Simulation Modeling For Energy Consumption Of Residential Consumers In Response To Demand Side Management., Prajwal Khadgi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Energy efficiency in the electricity distribution system continues to gain importance as demand for electricity keeps rising and resources keep diminishing. Achieving higher energy efficiency by implementing control strategies and demand response (DR) programs has always been a topic of interest in the electric utility industry. The advent of smart grids with enhanced data communication capabilities propels DR to be an essential part of the next generation power distribution system. Fundamentally, DR has the ability to charge a customer the true price of electricity at the time of use, and the general perception is that consumers would shift their load …

Study Of Spatiotemporal Rainfall Structure And Optimized Local Radar Rainfall Application To Urban Watershed, Louisville, Kentucky, 2010-2014., Jin-Young Hyun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In urban areas, a prevalence of combined sewer systems (CSS) exist that carry both storm water runoff and sanitary sewer flows in a single pipe, these system are considered combined sewers. In the absence of rainfall-runoff most of these systems function adequately, however CSS capacity is typically inadequate to carry peak stormwater runoff volume. In order to minimize sewage flooding into streets and backups into homes and businesses, most CSSs (as well as separate sanitary sewer systems) are designed to overflow into surface waters such as streams and rivers, lakes and seas. This occurrence is considered a combined sewer overflow …

A Reduced Labeled Samples (Rls) Framework For Classification Of Imbalanced Concept-Drifting Streaming Data., Elaheh Arabmakki
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Stream processing frameworks are designed to process the streaming data that arrives in time. An example of such data is stream of emails that a user receives every day. Most of the real world data streams are also imbalanced as is in the stream of emails, which contains few spam emails compared to a lot of legitimate emails. The classification of the imbalanced data stream is challenging due to the several reasons: First of all, data streams are huge and they can not be stored in the memory for one time processing. Second, if the data is imbalanced, the accuracy …

Determination Of Seismic Earth Pressures On Retaining Walls Through Finite Element Analysis, Michael Iannelli
Determination Of Seismic Earth Pressures On Retaining Walls Through Finite Element Analysis, Michael Iannelli
Master's Theses
Seismic pressures on displacing or rigid retaining or basement walls have been derived based on the original work of Mononobe and Okabe, who used a shake table to calculate dynamic pressures of displacing retaining walls existing in cohesionless soils. Since this original work was done over eighty years ago, the results of Mononobe and Okabe, colloquially known as M-O theory, have been applied to different conditions, including non-displacing basement walls, as well as changes in soil properties. Since the original work of M-O, there have been numerous studies completed to verify the accuracy of the original calculation, most notably the …

Design, Synthesis, And Characterization Of Nanoscale Optical Devices Using Dna Directed Self-Assembly, William Peter Klein
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Near-field energy transfer has great potential for use in nanoscale communications, biosensing, and light harvesting photonic devices. However, the light collecting and energy transferring efficiency of current devices is poor, resulting in few commercially available applications. Current human-made light harvesting devices lack the benefits of natural selection. Natural systems are typically highly optimized and highly efficient. For example, transfer efficiency in photosynthesis is greater than 90%.
In this work, two classes of optical devices were designed, synthesized, and characterized: Plasmonic waveguides and FRET-based photonic devices. In the case of plasmonic waveguides, a multi-scaffold DNA origami synthesis method was developed to …

For railway transport to be a sustainable component of the transportation infrastructure in the United States, adequate structural and functional design of track components is essential. This is primarily dependent on thorough understanding of track mechanics and track structural response under loading, and can be accomplished through mechanistic analysis of railway track structure response under loading. Considering the need for a mechanistic track analysis program that can serve as a link between the …
Kinetic Control Of Nucleic Acid Strand Displacement Reactions, Xiaoping Olson
Kinetic Control Of Nucleic Acid Strand Displacement Reactions, Xiaoping Olson
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Nucleic acids are information-dense, programmable polymers that can be engineered into primers, probes, molecular motors, and signal amplification circuits for computation, diagnostic, and therapeutic purposes. Signal amplification circuits increase the signal-to-noise ratio of target nucleic acids in the absence of enzymes and thermal cycling. Amplification is made possible via toehold mediated strand displacement – a process where one nucleic acid strand binds to a nucleation site on a complementary helix, which then displaces one of the two strands in a nucleic acid complex. When compared to polymerase chain reactions (PCR), the sensitivity and stability of toehold-mediated strand displacement reactions suffer …

Empirical Models For Structural Effects Of A-Site Point Defects And Ordering In Perovskites, Kevin Ross Tolman
Empirical Models For Structural Effects Of A-Site Point Defects And Ordering In Perovskites, Kevin Ross Tolman
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Composition-structure-property relationships are essential keys to unlocking the strength of predictive crystal chemistry. Awkwardly, the electroceramics industry largely relies on various time-consuming and expensive trial-and-error experiments to address new questions which often could otherwise be interpolated from published data. Indeed, predictive models, which can be derived from empirical evidence, can greatly aid the direction and support of future development in a meaningful, apt, and cost-effective way. Theory suggests that intrinsic properties on the scale of a unit cell may be estimated from the sizes and charges of the chemical constituents alone. Ultimately, researchers could be provided a compositional recipe for …

Coupled Numerical Analysis Of Variations In The Capacity Of An Energy Pile In Clay Soil, Daniel Patrick Zimmerman
Coupled Numerical Analysis Of Variations In The Capacity Of An Energy Pile In Clay Soil, Daniel Patrick Zimmerman
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Energy piles are an emerging alternative for the reduction of energy consumption to heat and cool buildings. The majority of the research to date focuses on thermodynamic properties or axial strain of piles. This paper concerns the effects of temperature fluctuation on the capacity of driven energy piles in clayey soils. Consolidation of clay (due to the dissipation of excess pore-water pressure in clay) surrounding piles affects the capacity of the pile (pile setup in clay). Reciprocally, it is reasonable to assume that heating and cooling periods will create or relax the excess pore-water pressure (EPWP) in clayey soils (due …
Electric Smart Load Meter, Johnny Tran
Electric Smart Load Meter, Johnny Tran
Electrical Engineering
This project details the design of an electric meter that reads the signals of any device plugged into an outlet and displays cost readings that may potentially reduce power consumption. The sensor monitors whether a plugged in device continuously consumes power after completely charging up. For a charging device, the current remains constant until the device reaches 100% charge. Once the device becomes fully charged, the current discontinues for proper power usage. A unique aspect of the meter is that it displays cost per hour, day, and year. Displaying the cost per unit of time creates awareness for customers, potentially …

The Effects Of Notch Geometry On Fracture Testing Of Asphalt Concrete, Rebekah Porter
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Asphalt concrete is commonly used as the surface layer on pavements because of its convenience, low cost, and smooth ride (Wagoner, 2005). However, there is a significant problem with the cracking and deterioration of asphalt concrete roads. The initiation of cracking in asphalt must be better understood in order to further improve pavement design. Fracture energy is the amount of energy needed to separate two surfaces. The semi circular bend (SCB) test can be used to measure the fracture energy of asphalt concrete. Currently, this method uses a semicircular specimen with a rectangular notch in a three-point bend compression test. …

A consumption of energy continues to increase at an exponential rate, especially in terms of automotive spark ignitions vehicles. About 40% of the applied fuel into a vehicle is lost as waste exhaust to the environment. The desire for improved fuel efficiency by recovering the exhaust waste heat in automobiles has become an important subject. The thermoelectric generator (TEG) has the potential to convert exhaust waste heat into electricity as long as it is improving fuel economy. The remarkable amount of research being conducted on TEGs indicates that this technology will have a bright future in terms of power generation. …
Real Time Implementation Of An Inertial Measurement Unit Based On Fiber-Bragg Sensor Array Using Legendre Polynomial, Taher Saifee Parekh
Real Time Implementation Of An Inertial Measurement Unit Based On Fiber-Bragg Sensor Array Using Legendre Polynomial, Taher Saifee Parekh
Theses and Dissertations
Missiles and launch vehicle are trending towards becoming more slender in shape to reduce aerodynamic drag. Bending vibrations of the rocket body occur when a flying object with a large slenderness performs pitch or yaw command. The onboard Inertia Measurement Unit (IMU) measures the attitude and the angular velocities of the deflected body as well as the rigid body motion and in turn feeds these signals back to the control loop. Feedback of the vibrating information degrades the control system stability and in the worst case makes the system unstable. These effects become more significant when the slenderness ratio of …
