The Derived Equivalent Circuit Model For Non-Magnetized And Magnetized Graphene, Ying S. Cao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Albert E. Ruehli

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, for the first time the electromagnetic features of graphene are characterized by a circuit model derived instead of fitted from the electric field integral equation (EFIE). The atomically thick graphene is equivalently replaced by an impedance surface. When it is magnetized, the impedance surface is anisotropic with a tensor conductivity. Based on EFIE, the graphene's circuit model can be derived by the partial element equivalency circuit (PEEC) concept. The anisotropic resistivity is modeled using a serial resistor with current control voltage sources (CCVSs). From the derived circuit model, electromagnetic properties of graphene can be conveniently analyzed. This …

Uav As A Service: Providing On-Demand Access And On-The-Fly Retasking Of Multi-Tenant Uavs Using Cloud Services, Justin Yapp

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

As commercial roles for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) become more well-defined and demand for the services provided by them increases, UAVs rely more on new cloud computing services and co-operative coordination to provide mission planning, control, tracking and data processing. We present UAV as a Service (UAVaaS) framework, which brings features commonly found in traditional cloud services, such as Infrastructure, Platform, and Software as a Service, to the domain of UAVs. Our work aims to conceptualize and design UAVaaS for commercial applications. Specifically, a cloud-provided orchestration framework that allows multi-tenant UAVs to easily serve multiple heterogenous clients at once and …

Walking Simulator Mechanism, Titus Lungu, Igor Tachynskyy, Omri Tayyara

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

This paper presents the design, simulation, and kinematic evaluation of a mechanism aimed at simulating both the motion and ground reaction forces produced by a human foot while walking. Such a mechanism can be used to test the durability of shoes through life cycle analysis. In attempting to mimic the physical motion of the human foot as closely as possible, the forces experienced by the human foot were also accurately replicated through the incorporation of a non-stationary testing platform. As is shown in the paper, this testing environment allows for simple adjustments to be made in order to simulate different …

Dr. Hadi Soroosh Research Presentation | Biological Engineering, Usu College Of Engineering

College of Engineering News

Rise of human population causes an increase of freshwater use and wastewater production worldwide. Wastewater contains various pathogens injurious to health and nutrients (mainly N and P) which would support photosynthesis of chlorophytes and terrestrial plants but can be also an ecological threat to the environment. The conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) require a large amount of energy (for mechanical aeration) and causes emission of CO2 and secondary contamination (by use of flocculants). Microalgae-Bacteria (MaB) biocoenosis can improve the capacity of the treatment system by simultaneous removal of the nutrients and carbon from wastewater with minimum carbon footprint and energy …

Pwm-Controlled Dc-Dc Converter Designs In 3d Ics Using Through-Silicon-Via Inductors, Prateek N. Kankonkar, Umamaheswara Rao Tida, Cheng Zhou, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There has been a tremendous research effort in recent years to move DC-DC converters on chip for enhanced performance. To reduce the large area overhead induced by conventional spiral inductors, existing literature has used through-silicon-vias (TSVs) inductors in basic DC-DC converters without feedback control. In this paper, we further study the possible application of TSV inductors in DC-DC converters with Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)-controlled feedback. The DC-DC converter with TSV inductor is at par in terms of performance with other conventional designs in the literature. Experimental results show that by replacing conventional spiral inductors with TSV inductors, up to 4.3x …

Order Reduction Of Dae Models, John Hedengren, Thomas F. Edgar May 2016

Order Reduction Of Dae Models, John Hedengren, Thomas F. Edgar

Faculty Publications

This report outlines a technique for the order reduction of differential algebraic equations (DAEs). The order reduction is accomplished in two steps. First, algebraic states are partitioned into successive implicit sets of variables and equations by reconstructing the sparsity pattern into lower triangular block form. Second, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is used to reduce the number of differential states. As a test case for the theory, a dynamic binary distillation column model is analyzed with the generalized approach. The index 1 DAE model of 52 differential and 178 algebraic states is reduced to an ODE model of 26 differential states.

A Cyber-Physical System, Andrew Davis, Dustin Bowe, Josiah Nagel May 2016

A Cyber-Physical System, Andrew Davis, Dustin Bowe, Josiah Nagel

Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship

The team was tasked with the creation of an autonomous cyber-physical system that could be continually developed as a post-capstone class by future STEM students and as a means to teach future engineering students. The strict definition of a cyber-physical system is a computation machine that networks with an embedded computer that performs a physical function. The autonomous aspect was achieved through two sonic sensors to monitor object distances in order to avoid walls and obstacles. The integrated system was based on the Intel Edison computation module. A primary goal for future addition is automation capabilities and machine learning applications.

Stabilizing The Cold Plasma-Stimulated Medium By Regulating Medium’S Composition, Dayun Yan, Niki Nourmohammadi, Ka Bian, Ferid Murad, Jonathan H. Sherman, Michael Keidar

Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Over past several years, the cold plasma-stimulated medium (PSM) has shown its remarkable anti-cancer capacity in par with the direct cold plasma irradiation on cancer cells or tumor tissues. Independent of the cold plasma device, PSM has noticeable advantage of being a flexible platform in cancer treatment. Currently, the largest disadvantage of PSM is its degradation during the storage over a wide temperature range. So far, to stabilize PSM, it must be remained frozen at −80 °C. In this study, we first reveal that the degradation of PSM is mainly due to the reaction between the reactive species and specific …

Development And Validation Of An Empirical Temperature-Dependent Voltage Model For Diode Laser Characterization, Grant Matthew Brodnik May 2016

Development And Validation Of An Empirical Temperature-Dependent Voltage Model For Diode Laser Characterization, Grant Matthew Brodnik

Graduate Theses - Physics and Optical Engineering

This work investigates the effects of temperature on the operation and performance of indium-phosphide (InP) based high-power broad-area laser (BAL) diodes operating in the eye-safe regime (1.5 μm – 2.0 μm). Low temperature (-80C to 0C) operation using a cryogenically cooled system enables investigation of temperature-dependent parameters such as threshold current, slope efficiency, diode voltage, and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of devices. Building upon established empirical models that describe threshold current and slope efficiency as functions of temperature, a key additional parametric model is developed to describe diode voltage incorporating a temperature dependence. With the inclusion of this temperature-dependent voltage …

Manipulation Of Surface Plasmon Resonance In Metal And Alloy Thin Films Using Dielectric Media, Benjamin Dubray Hall May 2016

Manipulation Of Surface Plasmon Resonance In Metal And Alloy Thin Films Using Dielectric Media, Benjamin Dubray Hall

Graduate Theses - Physics and Optical Engineering

Surface plasmon polaritons are coherent electron oscillations that propagate along an interface between a Drude metal and a dielectric medium. The excitation of polaritons is highly dependent on the dielectric properties of the metal, the thickness of the metal, and the optical properties of the dielectric material. First, plasmonic activity is assessed for several thicknesses of silver and nickel chromium under He-Ne incidence. Relationships between film thickness and metal dielectric function are explored in both cases. To manipulate the plasmonic activity at the silver surfaces, two methods are explored. Silver oxide was grown on the surface of the silver films, …

Bending Loss Mitigation By Surface Plasmon Resonance, Daniel Steven Spoor May 2016

Bending Loss Mitigation By Surface Plasmon Resonance, Daniel Steven Spoor

Graduate Theses - Physics and Optical Engineering

Surface plasmon resonance can be used to confine a wave within a thin metal film. The resultant wave is very well-confined by the extreme refractive index difference between the metal and the ambient medium. Such confinement can be used to guide waves under extreme conditions such as subwavelength channels or through extremely tight bends where radiation losses would normally dissipate the wave.

A nichrome thin film was deposited and etched as a shadow alongside a series of multi-mode SU-8 slab waveguides with extremely sharp angled bends. Light from a Helium-Neon laser was coupled into these waveguides and the power transmitted …
