Toward Mining Massive And Multi-Dimensional Data For Extreme Hydrometeorological And Climate Event Analyses, Ling Qiu, Francisco Munoz-Arriola, Carlos M. Carrilo

UCARE: Research Products

This poster presents the research on the main patterns of spatial distribution and temporal variability of precipitation and temperature in the Missouri River Basin (MRB). MRB has 117 million acres in cropland, produces of 46%, 22%, and 34% US's wheat, corn, and cattle, respectively. Also, MRB is known for intense weather and extreme climate variability. The approach is to identify different patterns of spatial distribution and temporal variability of precipitation and temperature through the use of a Principal Component Analysis. We have found that precipitation and temperature are the ideal meteorological variable to test spatiotemporal variability of extreme events using …

Cost Effective Manhole To Pipe Connection, Utkarsh Shekhar May 2016

Cost Effective Manhole To Pipe Connection, Utkarsh Shekhar

Master of Technology Management Plan II Graduate Projects

The manhole to the pipe connection is an important part of the sewer system. Any problem in the seal connecting the manhole to the pipe results into either inflow of ground water into the sewer system or outflow into the surrounding environment. The inflow of ground water on one hand increases the volume of wastewater being sent to the wastewater plant and on the other hand, the outflow leads to the contamination of the surrounding soil. Hence, the durability and longevity of the manhole to the pipe connection is crucial.

The manhole to the pipe connection generally fails due to …

Microstructure And Rheology Of Carbon Nanotubes At Air-Water Interfaces, Charles D. Young May 2016

Microstructure And Rheology Of Carbon Nanotubes At Air-Water Interfaces, Charles D. Young

Honors Scholar Theses

This work characterizes the material properties of carbon nanotubes at air-water interfaces for potential use in creating stable emulsions. Properties such as length, aspect ratio, contact angle, microstructural ordering, surface pressure, compression and shear elastic moduli, stresses, surface viscosities and non-linearity are explored. Challenges such as deviation from a classical analysis of monolayers are encountered in the form of aggregation, mechanical contributions, and interface relaxation. These factors are taken into account to explain experimental measurements and trends. Ultimately, existing models for more homogeneous systems are resolved with observations to offer insight and areas of promise moving forward.

Comparative Study Of Dimension Reduction Approaches With Respect To Visualization In 3-Dimensional Space, Pooja Chenna May 2016

Comparative Study Of Dimension Reduction Approaches With Respect To Visualization In 3-Dimensional Space, Pooja Chenna

Master of Science in Computer Science Theses

In the present big data era, there is a need to process large amounts of unlabeled data and find some patterns in the data to use it further. If data has many dimensions, it is very hard to get any insight of it. It is possible to convert high-dimensional data to low-dimensional data using different techniques, this dimension reduction is important and makes tasks such as classification, visualization, communication and storage much easier. The loss of information should be less while mapping data from high-dimensional space to low-dimensional space. Dimension reduction has been a significant problem in many fields as …

Research hypothesis:

Production of biogas can be enhanced through manual introduction and constant stimulation of key microbial consortia that are responsible for degradation of an organic waste of interest. Bacteria in sediments fromLogan Lagoons have a hidden potential to degrade a wide variety of wastewater contaminants and can serve as a universal inoculum for anaerobic digestion and substrate-adaptation studies. To test the hypothesis, microbial consortia isolated from Logan Lagoons sediments will be analyzed for the specific hydrolytic or methane producing activity and tested for the capabilities to withstand preservation at varying conditions. Increase in production of biogas with addition of …

A Graph-Based Bandit Algorithm For Maximum User Coverage In Online Recommendation Systems, Mahmuda Rahman, Jae C. Oh May 2016

A Graph-Based Bandit Algorithm For Maximum User Coverage In Online Recommendation Systems, Mahmuda Rahman, Jae C. Oh

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

We study a type of recommendation systems problem, in which the system must be able to cover as many users’ tastes as possible while users’ tastes change over time. This problem can be viewed as a variation of the maximum coverage problem, where the number of sets and elements within any sets can change dynamically. When the number of distinctive elements is large, an exhaustive search for even a fixed number of elements is known to be computationally expensive. Many known algorithms tend to have exponential growth in complexity. We propose a novel graph based UCB1 algorithm that effectively minimizes …

Hybrid Sulfur Process For Solar Production Of Hydrogen, John Jacob Isenhower, Katherine Cross Henderson, Nicholas Joseph Eigenbrot May 2016

Hybrid Sulfur Process For Solar Production Of Hydrogen, John Jacob Isenhower, Katherine Cross Henderson, Nicholas Joseph Eigenbrot

Senior Theses

Lowering dependence on fossil-based fuels has become a major area of focus in research, especially in transportation fuels. One particularly interesting field is that of hydrogen production. Hydrogen is promising because it has the potential to emit no greenhouse gases when used as fuel and is an excellent vessel for energy storage. Because traditional methods for its generation are inefficient and require nonrenewable fuel use, researchers have begun to focus on thermochemical cycles.

Thermochemical cycles are systems that require heat transfer intrinsically and do not consume fossil fuels nor emit greenhouse gases if renewable energy is used for heating. The …

Satellite Retrievals Of Karenia Brevis Harmful Algal Blooms In The West Florida Shelf Using Neural Networks And Comparisons With Other Techniques, Ahmed El-Habashi, Ioannis Ioannou, Michelle Tomlinson, Richard P. Stumpf, Sam Ahmed

Publications and Research

We describe the application of a Neural Network (NN) previously developed by us, to the detection and tracking, of Karenia brevis Harmful Algal Blooms (KB HABs) that plague the coasts of the West Florida Shelf (WFS) using Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) satellite observations. Previous approaches for the detection of KB HABs in the WFS primarily used observations from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Aqua (MODIS-A) satellite. They depended on the remote sensing reflectance signal at the 678 nm chlorophyll fluorescence band (Rrs678) needed for both the normalized fluorescence height (nFLH) and Red Band Difference algorithms (RBD) currently used. …

Nonlinear Modal Interactions In Parity-Time (Pt) Symmetric Lasers, Li Ge, Ramy El-Ganainy May 2016

Nonlinear Modal Interactions In Parity-Time (Pt) Symmetric Lasers, Li Ge, Ramy El-Ganainy

Publications and Research

Parity-time (PT ) symmetric lasers have attracted considerable attention lately due to their promising applications and intriguing properties, such as free spectral range doubling and single-mode lasing. In this work we discuss nonlinear modal interactions in these laser systems under steady state conditions, and we demonstrate that several gain clamping scenarios can occur for lasing operation in the PT -symmetric and PT -broken phases. In particular, we show that, depending on the system’s design and the external pump profile, its operation in the nonlinear regime falls into two different categories: in one the system is frozen in the PT phase …

Nonlinear I/O Characterization With The Time Domain Electromagnetic Simulations, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Huan Huan Zhang, Ying S. Cao, Ping Li May 2016

Nonlinear I/O Characterization With The Time Domain Electromagnetic Simulations, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Huan Huan Zhang, Ying S. Cao, Ping Li

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Computational electromagnetic algorithms are indispensible to today's electromagnetic compatibility. However the nonlinear I/O modeling and its hybridized simulation with electromagnetic solvers were less addressed. In this paper, we discuss two major solutions we proposed for nonlinear I/O modeling. When the details of the circuit are given known, the SPICE circuit model can be employed in the simulation. However when the detail of the nonlinear I/O is not known, which happens often, a parametric macro model is first developed to replace the I/O before the hybridized characterization. The proposed techniques are mostly suitable for time domain based computational electromagnetics systems.

Cyclic Loading Behavior Of Cfrp-Wrapped Non-Ductile Reinforced Concrete Beam-Column Joints, Ali S. H. Zerkane

Dissertations and Theses

Use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) material has been a good solution for many problems in many fields. FRP is available in different types (carbon and glass) and shapes (sheets, rods, and laminates). Civil engineers have used this material to overcome the weakness of concrete members that may have been caused by substandard design or due to changes in the load distribution or to correct the weakness of concrete structures over time specially those subjected to hostile weather conditions. The attachment of FRP material to concrete surfaces to promote the function of the concrete members within the frame system is …
