The Estimation Of Modal Shift Potential For A New Form Of Dial-A-Ride Service, Banihan Gunay, Kadir Akgol, Ingmar Andréasson, Serdal Terzi

Journal of Public Transportation

The concept of a dynamic and flexible Intelligent Subscription Bus Service (I-Service) was developed, and two integrated questionnaires were conducted among the commuters of a large university campus. To determine travel times to the campus by I-Service, a digital urban road network map with travel time databases was produced, and software was developed to calculate optimum routes using these databases. Travel times for each participant were determined by the shortest travel time principle. The proposed hypothetical service was introduced to participants, and anticipated advantages for each participant were reported back to them by means of a second questionnaire to determine …

Magnetic Bearing For Bently Nevada Rk4 Rotor Kits, Sean Fowler, Garrett Olson Jun 2016

Magnetic Bearing For Bently Nevada Rk4 Rotor Kits, Sean Fowler, Garrett Olson

Mechanical Engineering

Active Magnetic Bearings (AMB) are contact free bearings that support loads by magnetic levitation. This is accomplished by generating magnetic forces with electric current through a series of electromagnets surrounding a suspended rotor mass. Along with a set of electromagnets, an AMB assembly also consists of power amplifiers for each electromagnet, a controller, and proximity sensors. The proximity sensors provide rotor position feedback to the control system, which modulates power to the amplifiers [4]. Magnetic bearings are used in several industrial applications today, including but not limited to compressors, turbines, pumps, motors, and generators. Advantages of their utility include very …

El Capitán: Cal Poly Rose Float Digital Drive System, Gregory Raffi Baghdikian

Computer Engineering

In today’s world of smartphones, self-driving cars, and internet-connected coffee makers, it seems as if computers are contained in everything around us. These “embedded systems” have become critical components of our lives, improving everything about the things they control, from cost, to speed, to simplicity. One area that embedded systems has hardly gained a foothold is in the world of floatbuilding. Most of the floats in the Tournament of Roses Parade, including the one built jointly by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly Pomona, are technologically very simple, using mostly analog components and rudimentary discrete digital logic to …

Optical Bistability In A Vcsel Coupled To Serially-Connected Pin Photodiodes Quantizer Device, Sanaz Faryadras Jun 2016

Optical Bistability In A Vcsel Coupled To Serially-Connected Pin Photodiodes Quantizer Device, Sanaz Faryadras

Graduate Theses - Physics and Optical Engineering

In this work we investigated the structure and performance of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL) which will be used in building an optical quantizer. In any p-i-n structure, capacitance is the most important factor in deciding the highest modulation speed. Therefore, components with smaller capacitance would show higher switching speed. A novel electrical quantizer was constructed using two identical 850 nm Finisar VCSELs, which could manifest electrical switching up to 1.4 MHz. Also, a new electrical quantizer was built with two Eudyna PIN photodiodes (PD-PD), which works at higher frequencies up to 8 MHz, comparing to previous works. The …

Calcium Phosphate As A Key Material For Socially Responsible Tissue Engineering, Vuk Uskoković, Victoria M. Wu Jun 2016

Calcium Phosphate As A Key Material For Socially Responsible Tissue Engineering, Vuk Uskoković, Victoria M. Wu

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Socially responsible technologies are designed while taking into consideration the socioeconomic, geopolitical and environmental limitations of regions in which they will be implemented. In the medical context, this involves making therapeutic platforms more accessible and affordable to patients in poor regions of the world wherein a given disease is endemic. This often necessitates going against the reigning trend of making therapeutic nanoparticles ever more structurally complex and expensive. However, studies aimed at simplifying materials and formulations while maintaining the functionality and therapeutic response of their more complex counterparts seldom provoke a significant interest in the scientific community. In this review …

Surface Modification Of Polycrystalline Diamond Compacts By Carbon Ion Irradiation, Madhu S. K. Mutyala, Lianyi Chen, Ting Chiang Lin, Benjamin R. Maier, Beata Tyburska, Kumar Sridharan, Kornel Ehmann, Xiaochun Li

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Selective modification (e.g. defect creation and amorphization) of diamond surfaces is of interests for functional diamond-based semiconductors and devices. Bombarding the diamond surface with high energy radiation sources such as electron, proton, and neutrons, however, often result in detrimental defects in deep bulk regions under the diamond surface. In this study, we utilized high energy carbon ions of 3 MeV to bombard the polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) specimen. The resultant microstructure of PDCs was investigated using micro Raman spectroscopy. The results show that the carbon bombardment successfully created point defects and amorphization in a shallow region of ∼500 nm deep …

Why I Don't Weld In Computer Labs, Mark Deegan Jun 2016

Why I Don't Weld In Computer Labs, Mark Deegan

Level 3

Until very recently, like many people in DIT, I had never even seen a welding laboratory. To listen to me now, you’d swear I was raised with a welding torch in my hand. That’s not the case, but when I moved jobs in September 2015, I discovered that DIT runs evening courses in welding, so I decided to sign up. Way back, when I was in college, the greatest threat to life-and-limb was either an alcoholinduced idiot injury, or at worst, the risk of burning myself with a soldering Iron. They get pretty hot, sometimes as hot as 215°C. That …

Factors Influencing Demand For Buses Powered By Alternative Energy Sources, Janer Galván, Victor Cantillo, Julian Arellana Jun 2016

Factors Influencing Demand For Buses Powered By Alternative Energy Sources, Janer Galván, Victor Cantillo, Julian Arellana

Journal of Public Transportation

Transit buses consume high amounts of fossil fuels, with the consequent release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In recent decades, much effort has been concentrated on the development of cleaner fuels to mitigate this externality. However, market shares for cleaner-fueled buses are still modest, which is why it is relevant to evaluate the aspects influencing their acceptance. This article presents an econometric model to evaluate factors influencing demand for transit buses in Colombia powered by cleaner fuels. For this purpose, a stated preference survey was applied to public transportation entrepreneurs. Results suggest that the target population considers acquisition cost …

A Composite Index For Evaluating Transit Service Quality Across Different User Profiles, Juan De Oña, Rocio De Oña, Francisco Diez-Mesa, Laura Eboli, Gabriella Mazzulla

Journal of Public Transportation

This paper evaluates the quality of service of the metropolitan Metro of Seville (Spain) across different user profiles, as determined through cluster analysis. Service quality evaluation is performed using a composite index that combines the user point of view with the service operator point of view. The combination of these two types of service quality measurement fulfils the need to provide a reliable measurement tool for transit performance. Six user profiles were identified, and it was ascertained that they have different opinions about the service, with heterogeneous gaps between the points of view among the six user profiles.

Examining Bus Lost Time Dynamics For A Bus Rapid Transit Station, Ankit Kathuria, M. Parida, Ch. Ravi Sekhar, Manu Pathak Jun 2016

Examining Bus Lost Time Dynamics For A Bus Rapid Transit Station, Ankit Kathuria, M. Parida, Ch. Ravi Sekhar, Manu Pathak

Journal of Public Transportation

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems are considered to be the most effective alternative for solving urban transportation problems for both developed and developing countries. The conventional approach to estimate dwell time (DT) is based on traditional DT models derived for normal bus stops, but not for modern BRT stations. BRT stations are different from bus stops in terms of length of platform, multiple loading areas, and number of passengers handled. Therefore, understanding dwell time dynamics, including the recently-introduced component of Bus Lost Time (BLT), is important to improve the operations of BRT systems. This research introduces various possible scenarios of …

Complex Filters As As A Cascade Of Of Buffered Gingell Structures: Design From From Band-Stop Constraints, Samuel Robert Johnston

Master's Theses

This thesis presents an active Complex Filter implementation that that creates a transfer function with with a single real pole and a complex zero. The two-input/two-output network developed in in this thesis responds differently based upon upon the relative phase difference of of the two inputs. If a negative ninety-degree phase difference occurs between the two inputs, the filter will exhibits a bandstop response. While a positive ninety-degree phase difference exhibits a bandpass response. This topology is relatesd to to Gingell’s RC-CR polyphase topology but because of of the use of of op-amps, can be cascadedd without without suffering loading …
