Comparison Study Of Tensile Strength , Ductility, And Fracture Mode Of H11, Arp 2000, And Mp35n Connecting Rod Bolts For Use In High Performance Racing Engines, Megan Mccabe, Samuel Randall
Materials Engineering
Oliver Racing Parts (ORP) has historically purchased connecting rod bolts made of high strength, high cost, nickel-cobalt alloy, MP35N, and a medium strength, low cost, proprietary tool steel called ARP 2000. ORP has recently acquired capabilities to manufacture their own bolts. To determine the quality of their product as it compares to their previous supplier, ORP produced three different types of ⅜” diameter bolts: one set of bolts made of MP35N, and two sets of H11 bolts, designated H11A and H11B for their respective processing. The H11, ARP 2000, and MP35N bolts were tensile tested using a custom designed test …

Analysis Of A Parallel Machine Scheduling Problem With Sequence Dependent Setup Times And Job Availability Intervals, Ridvan Gedik, Chase Rainwater, Heather Nachtmann, Edward A. Pohl
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications
In this study, we propose constraint programming (CP) model and logic-based Benders algorithms in order to make the best decisions for scheduling non-identical jobs with availability intervals and sequence dependent setup times on unrelated parallel machines in a fixed planning horizon. In this problem, each job has a profit, cost and must be assigned to at most one machine in such a way that total profit is maximized. In addition, the total cost has to be less than or equal to a budget level. Computational tests are performed on a real-life case study prepared in collaboration with the U.S. Army …

Environmental Assisted Cracking Of Pipeline Steels In Co2 Containing Environment, Marina Cabrini, Sergio Lorenzi, Fabio Maria Bolzoni
International Workshop on the Environmental Damage in Structural Materials Under Static Load/Cyclic Loads at Ambient Temperatures
Buried pipelines are susceptible to Environmental Assisted Cracking (EAC) in three different conditions: Stress Corrosion Cracking in the presence of Carbonate-Bicarbonate (CB-SCC), Near Neutral Stress Corrosion Cracking (NN-SCC) and Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE). Both CB-SCC and NN-SCC involve in their mechanism the presence of CO2 and/or its dissociated species dissolved in moisture under the coating, while the generic term of HE refers to the phenomena of brittle fracture taking place for entry of atomic hydrogen inside the metal lattice, owing to the applied cathodic protection.
Historically the CB-SCC was the first established form of stress corrosion on pipelines in the 60s, …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Common Input Parameters In Tools For Modeling Energy In Homes, Sheikh Tijan Tabban, Nelson Fumo
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Energy models of buildings can be developed and used for analysis of energy consumption. A model offers the opportunity to simulate a building under specific conditions for analysis of energy efficiency measures or optimum design. Due to the great amount of information needed to develop an energy model of a building, the number of inputs can be reduced by making variable the most relevant input parameters and making the others to take common or standard values. In this study, an analysis of input parameters required by computational tools to estimate energy consumption in homes was done in two stages. In …
Gold Contamination In Non-Lead Surface Mount Solder Joints, Richard Alexander Garrison
Gold Contamination In Non-Lead Surface Mount Solder Joints, Richard Alexander Garrison
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
Abstract
Solder joints are critical to the reliability of circuit boards. If gold is introduced to the solder joint, brittle AuSn4 intermetallic compounds develop which affect reliability of that solder joint. To determine the effects of gold when dissolved into a non-lead solder joint, a process was developed in order to apply gold content onto SAC305 solder paste. The gold was transferred as a paste from a micropipette onto each individual solder bump. This process was designed to apply a range of gold content from 1.0 wt. % to 10 wt. % to each individual solder joint. The test board …
Improving The Mechanical Performance Of 3d Printed Parts Using Fused Filament Fabrication, Inderpreet Binning
Improving The Mechanical Performance Of 3d Printed Parts Using Fused Filament Fabrication, Inderpreet Binning
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
The 3D printing industry has seen rapid growth in the last 10 years and has been called the next industrial revolution. There are several different processes used in 3D printing, but the most popular process is called Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) or Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). This is the process where (most commonly) plastic filament enters a nozzle, is heated to a semi-liquid state, and then deposited into a pattern to create a print. One major drawback to this process is that the prints are anisotropic. This means that the strength of the print varies with the orientation that it …
Design & Analysis Of A Bicycle Towing Device, Austin Lynch, William Max Mcewan, Fredrik Stenson
Design & Analysis Of A Bicycle Towing Device, Austin Lynch, William Max Mcewan, Fredrik Stenson
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
A local businessman had the idea to build a device that allows a bicycle to tow another bicycle. He built a prototype to demonstrate his idea but he wanted help in developing a product that could fit more bikes, did not require a rear rack to operate, and be manufacturable at his facility. He also expressed interest in an economic evaluation of production and marketing of the device. An analysis of customer needs led to adding reduction of weight and ease of attachment to the design requirements.
This report is about improving the original design and presents the process of …

The improvement of the current assembly of the motor and casting components for the Haas UMC-750 5-Axis vertical CNC mill includes the evaluation, development and proposal of a new pair of material handling carts. To meet these deliverables, a student team began by assessing the assembly workstation, defining the problem to be solved, researching ergonomics in material handling equipment and drafting the final design of the improved cart models using SolidWorks. The final design considered the initial improvement request from the client, as well as better ergonomic features to enhance the safety of the operators. It was estimated that the …
Superalloy Metallurgy A Gleeble Study Of Environmental Fracture In Inconel 601, Alan C. Demmons
Superalloy Metallurgy A Gleeble Study Of Environmental Fracture In Inconel 601, Alan C. Demmons
Master's Theses
At temperatures above 0.5 Tm and in aggressive atmospheres predicting alloy performance is particularly challenging. Nickel alloys used in regimes where microstructure and properties are altered dynamically present unique requirements. Exposure may alter properties with unexpected early failure. The Gleeble is a valuable tool for investigation and simulation of thermo-mechanical properties of an alloy in various regimes up to the threshold of melting. In this study, four regimes of temperature and strain rate were simulated in an argon atmosphere to both investigate and document normal and abnormal failure modes. Commercial Inconel 601 was tested in selected regimes and in two …

Material Weakening Due To Corrosion In Hardened Bearing Steels, R.H. Vegter, M. Ersson, Bo Han
International Workshop on the Environmental Damage in Structural Materials Under Static Load/Cyclic Loads at Ambient Temperatures
In rolling and ball bearings, materials are designed to withstand extremely high loads for long operation times. Most bearing steels are hardened steels with high carbon content that typically can function up to the Very High Cycle Fatigue regime (>1010 load cycles). The loads under which this occurs are given by the fatigue limit, which is a parameter that does depend on the strength of the material, but is commonly seen as a fixed parameter Therefore, material weakening is playing an important role when components fail as a result of rolling contact fatigue loading. In this paper, the effects …

Mechanical & Chemical Driving Force Affecting Crack Nucleation, K. Sadanand, Asuri K. Vasudevan
International Workshop on the Environmental Damage in Structural Materials Under Static Load/Cyclic Loads at Ambient Temperatures
Load history has been known to affect fracture and stress corrosion behavior. The degree to which it affects depends on the severity of the load history. It is known that shop peening can retard the SCC lives markedly in steels. Similarly, prestraining can reduce the KIscc and plateau velocity in high strength steels.
These types of experiments are difficult to quantify their effects on the SCC behavior. One can analyze the prestarining effects in a better way by analyzing the effects of single overloads followed by constant applied load to study the behavior. Such experiments can be done by observing …

Benefit-Cost Analysis Of Commercially Available Activated Carbon Filters For Indoor Ozone Removal In Single-Family Homes, J. R. Aldred, E. Darling, G. Morrison, J. Siegel, R. L. Corsi
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study involved the development of a model for evaluating the potential costs and benefits of ozone control by activated carbon filtration in single-family homes. The modeling effort included the prediction of indoor ozone with and without activated carbon filtration in the HVAC system. As one application, the model was used to predict benefit-to-cost ratios for single-family homes in 12 American cities in five different climate zones. Health benefits were evaluated using disability-adjusted life-years and included city-specific age demographics for each simulation. Costs of commercially available activated carbon filters included capital cost differences when compared to conventional HVAC filters of …
Integration Of General Education Into The Senior Capstone Class In Engineering, Patricia Backer, Laura Sullivan-Green
Integration Of General Education Into The Senior Capstone Class In Engineering, Patricia Backer, Laura Sullivan-Green
Faculty Publications
Over the past few years, San Jose State University (SJSU) has mandated that all of the undergraduate degree programs including engineering degrees be set at 120 units. With the existing number of units for the BS engineering degrees, this mandatory requirement has led to new innovations in General Education (GE) at SJSU. We have created a two-course sequence to support the integration of upper division General Education into the engineering major. Advanced GE at SJSU is designed to help students become integrated thinkers who can see connections between and among a variety of concepts and ideas. In the College of …
Solution Casting And Mechanical Testing Of Arabinan-Cellulose Nanocomposites, Kevin Su, Alina Lusebrink
Solution Casting And Mechanical Testing Of Arabinan-Cellulose Nanocomposites, Kevin Su, Alina Lusebrink
Materials Engineering
The purpose of this work was to investigate methods to produce consistent, reliable, and testable thin films of arabinan-cellulose nanocomposites. Mechanical properties and composition of the Opuntia ficus-indica cactus spines served as motivation for this research. The high specific strength and stiffness, biodegradability, and sustainability of these spines inspired the creation of composites fabricated from the same materials found in cactus spines: arabinan and nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC). Arabinan serves as the matrix material and NCC as the reinforcement. To explore the feasibility of using a non-toxic solvent, different solution casting techniques with water as a solvent were investigated. Ultrasonication was …
Selection Of A Flexible Polymer To Protect Dry Carbon Fibers In A Cfrp Wallet Hinge, Evan Dowey, Matthew Johnson
Selection Of A Flexible Polymer To Protect Dry Carbon Fibers In A Cfrp Wallet Hinge, Evan Dowey, Matthew Johnson
Materials Engineering
Common Fibers, a company founded by Cal Poly alumni, produces carbon fiber wallets. The invention of their built-in fiber-matrix composite hinge reduces the need for extra complexity and added mass that is inherent with using standard metal hinges to join standard composite panels. Replacing the polyurethane tape on the wallet hinge allows for improved protection while maintaining flexibility and other performance properties is critical to the success of such a design. The most important material property in this project is the bond strength between carbon fiber and a variety of flexible resin candidates. The silicone and urethane based elastomer resins …
