Development Of A "Multi-Cut" Payload For Use In Stratospheric Ballooning Missions, James Flaten, Joey Habeck, Noah Biniek, Steven Smeaton, Austin Langford, Jordan Diers, Isaac Krieger
2017 Academic High Altitude Conference
The ability to cut strings (AKA lines) during stratospheric ballooning missions has a wide variety of uses including, but not limited to, (a) flight termination (i.e. cutting payloads away from the main balloon), (b) cutting away excess lift balloon(s) to slow ascent rate (and possibly achieve float), (c) cutting away ballast weights to slow descent rate or increase ascent rate, (d) cutting away burst balloon(s) on descent to avoid parachute entanglement, and (e) cutting away payloads which are intended to return to the ground independently, for experimental purposes. We report on the development of a “multi-cut” payload box that uses …

The market for nano- and microsatellites is developing rapidly. There is a strong focus on 2D imaging of the Earth's surface, with limited possibilities to obtain spectral information. More demanding applications, such as monitoring trace gases and aerosols, or water quality still require advanced spectral imaging instruments, which are large, heavy and expensive.
In recent years TNO has investigated and developed different innovative designs to realize advanced spectrometers for space applications in a more compact and cost-effective manner. This offers multiple advantages: A compact instrument can be flown on a much smaller platform (nano- or microsatellite); a low-cost instrument opens …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
We report a low-cost compact diffuse speckle contrast flowmeter (DSCF) consisting of a small laser diode and a bare charge-coupled-device (CCD) chip, which can be used for contact measurements of blood flow variations in relatively deep tissues (up to ∼8 mm). Measurements of large flow variations by the contact DSCF probe are compared to a noncontact CCD-based diffuse speckle contrast spectroscopy and a standard contact diffuse correlation spectroscopy in tissue phantoms and a human forearm. Bland–Altman analysis shows no significant bias with good limits of agreement among these measurements: 96.5% ± 2.2% (94.4% to 100.0%) in phantom experiments and 92.8% …

Spatial domain multiplexing (SDM), also known as space division multiplexing, adds a new degree of photon freedom to existing optical fiber multiplexing techniques by allocating separate radial locations to different channels of the same wavelength as a function of the input launch angle. These independent MIMO channels remain confined to their designated locations while traversing the length of the carrier fiber owing to helical propagation of light inside the fiber core. As a result, multiple channels of the same wavelength can be supported inside a single optical fiber core, thereby allowing spatial reuse of optical frequencies and multiplication of fiber …

Application Of Voltammetry For Electroanalytical Measurement Of Concentrations In Lacl3-Mgcl2 Mixtures In Eutectic Licl-Kcl, Zhonghang Wang, Devin Rappleye, C S. Yang, Michael Simpson
Faculty Publications
For electroanalytical measurement of molten chloride salts, various voltammetry methods have been used on mixtures of MgCl2 and LaCl3 in eutectic LiCl-KCl. These salt mixtures are of primary interest to spent nuclear fuel electrorefining systems. MgCl2 is used as a surrogate for PuCl3, while LaCl3 represents rare earth fission product salts. Cyclic voltammetry scans with these salt mixtures exhibited extra peaks, presumably due to underpotential deposition of La(III) ions onto Mg. Quantitatively, the current contribution from each peak was best determined using normal pulse voltammetry and fit to the Cottrell equation. This yielded linear …

Silver Photo-Diffusion And Photo-Induced Macroscopic Surface Deformation Of Ge33s67/Ag/Si Substrate, M. Ailavajhala, M. Mitkova
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Ge-chalcogenide films show various photo-induced changes, and silver photo-diffusion is one of them which attracts lots of interest. In this paper, we report how silver and Ge-chalcogenide layers in Ge33S67/Ag/Si substrate stacks change under light exposure in the depth by measuring time-resolved neutron reflectivity. It was found from the measurement that Ag ions diffuse all over the matrix Ge33S67layer once Ag dissolves into the layer. We also found that the surface was macroscopically deformed by the extended light exposure. Its structural origin was investigated by a scanning electron microscopy.

Development And Characterization Of Oxygen Sensitive Microbial Biosensors, Jonathan Lee
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Research Publications
Microbial biosensors are useful in detecting suboptimal conditions in a bioreactor. This detection can help in development of improved mixing methods to reduce the occurrence of these conditions. In this research, the activities of 3 promoters known to have activity under anaerobic conditions, the gadB promoter, an FNR protein activated promoter, and the pfl promoter, were tested for activity under anaerobic conditions by connecting them to a green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene. Using two types of media, Luria-Bertani (LB) and Wilms-Reuss media, the activity of these promoters under aerobic and anaerobic conditions were tested. Results indicate that while the FNR …

Determining The Print Accuracy Of Four Three-Dimensional Printers, Kshiteej Dalal
Master of Technology Management Plan II Graduate Projects
Rapid prototyping [RP] or 3D printing [3DP] have existed for some time now. One of the major deficiencies of 3DP is the accuracy of the printed three dimensional parts. Even beyond that is the lack of studies that have been designed to measure the 3DP components. Measuring, verifying and determining the accuracy of 3DP parts is the focus of this study. As the accuracy is measured and approaches those of CNC machined parts, it will drive the development of additional additive manufacturing [AM] machinery. In this project a component is created in a solid modeling package. A solid model of …

Design Maps For Fracture Resistant Functionally Graded Materials, Muhammad Ridwan Murshed
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research is to generate design maps to identify functionally graded microstructures with enhanced fracture toughness. Several Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) with an edge crack and membrane loading are considered and the resulting J-integral values are computed numerically using Finite Element Analysis. In order to capture the resulting stress fields accurately, Barsoum elements are used in the vicinity of the crack tip and the simulations are carried out for several crack lengths (a) and material contrasts (κ). The averages of the J-integral values are used to determine the normalized Stress Intensity Factors which are then benchmarked with …

Generalizing The Quantum Dot Lab Towards Arbitrary Shapes And Compositions, Matthew A. Bliss, Prasad Sarangapani, James Fonseca, Gerhard Klimeck
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
As applications in nanotechnology reach the scale of countable atoms, computer simulation has become a necessity in the understanding of new devices, such as quantum dots. To understand the various optoelectronic properties of these nanoparticles, the Quantum Dot Lab (QDL) has been created and powered by NEMO5 to simulate on multi-scale, multi-physics bases. QDL is easy to use by offering choices of different QD geometries such as shapes and sizes to the users from a predefined menu. The simplicity of use, however, limits the simulation of general QD shapes and compositions. A method to import generic strained crystalline and amorphous …

Modeling Of A Roll-To-Roll Plasma Cvd System For Graphene, Yudong Chen, Majed A. Alrefae, Anurag Kumar, Timothy S. Fisher
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Graphene is a 2D carbon material that has extraordinary physical properties relevant to many industrial applications such as electronics, oxidation barrier and biosensors. Roll-to-roll plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been developed to manufacture graphene at large scale. In a plasma CVD chamber, graphene is grown on a copper foil as it passes through a high-temperature plasma region. The temperatures of the gas and the copper foil play important roles in the growth of graphene. Consequently, there is a need to understand the temperature and gas velocity distributions in the system. The heat generated in the plasma creates a thermal …

Cadmium zinc sulfide, CdZnS, is a promising material for the buffer layer of thin film solar cells because the alloy is considerably more cost effective and more optimizable than pure cadmium sulfide, CdS, in terms of band gap. The current fabrication methods of the buffer layer often require expensive equipment or produce undesirable impurities in the alloy. This study investigates a cost effective and scalable solution route method to synthesize the CdZnS buffer layer. Molecular precursors of CdZnS were dissolved in varying molecular ratios of cadmium and zinc in a mixture of hexylamine and propanethiol. The resulting alloys produced were …

Infant Exposure To Resuspended Particles From Carpeted Flooring: Experimental Chamber Study With A Simplified Mechanical Crawling Infant, Manjie Fu, Brandon E. Boor
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Airborne particles of biological origin – bioaerosols – are present everywhere, including the indoor environment where people spend considerable amounts of time, and exposure to such materials via inhalation can have a number of health implications. Bioaerosol dynamics can occur through a variety of mechanisms, among them resuspension of deposited particles due to human activity. Because the breathing zone of infants is at a much lower height than that of adults, there is reason to suspect that infants are exposed to greater concentrations of bioaerosols resuspended from the floor, though knowledge in this specific area is limited. To investigate, a …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Micro-Combined Heat and Power (micro-CHP) units locally generate electricity to simultaneously provide power and heat for residential buildings. Apart from the potential benefits of reducing carbon emissions and increasing robustness to brownouts and blackouts, micro-CHP systems can be controlled to meet energy demands. Micro-CHP systems consist of a prime mover that generates electricity, such as a fuel cell, an internal combustion engine, or a Stirling engine, and a waste heat recovery system that enables utilization of heat generated as a byproduct of electricity generation. Often, a thermal energy storage system is integrated with micro-CHP systems, thereby decoupling, in time, the …

Phosphor thermometry is a non-intrusive thermometry technique that allows for spatially and temporally resolved surface temperature measurements. The thermographic method has been employed in a number of applications that include combustion, sprays, and gas flows. In the current work, we investigate the implementation of thermographic phosphors in liquid flows, which is of interest in a wide range of applications in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermal systems. Zinc oxide doped with Zinc (ZnO:Zn) was the phosphor employed for experimentation due to its high emission intensity and insolubility. In order to explore this application, the phosphor powder was uniformly dispersed in …

Development Of Functional Requirements For A High-Capacity Airspace System, Noel J. Colon, Jeongjoon Boo, Steven J. Landry
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
NASA along with other researchers visualizes a future where more aircraft will transport passengers or goods around the world. Thus, they envision increasing air capacity from 10 to 100 times more than the current system without any reduction in efficiency or safety. Many models are being proposed that comply with the necessary requirements to form part of the method needed. However, knowing which of the proposed methods have the most desirable characteristics, such as efficiency and safety, are yet to be determined. For this reason, a standardized method to compare and assess them has to be developed, since is not …

47 to 53 percent of women over the age of 20 suffer from urinary incontinence, often caused by childbirth-related damage to the pelvic nerve. This uncertainty of when bladder voiding will occur causes social anxiety and can compromise quality of life. This study explores one method to restore the ability to sense the need to urinate and prevent unwanted voiding. We propose a device to measure pressure due to bladder content as the difference between pressure in the bladder and pressure in the abdominal cavity. Integrated circuits, biocompatible packaging, and wireless radiofrequency powering allow for a fully implantable device to …

The separation of harmful or valuable substances entrapped in porous media has applications in processes such as enhanced oil recovery, diffusion in tissue, and aquifer remediation. In this study the motion and removal rate of immiscible and miscible solutions have been analyzed to gain understanding of solvent effectiveness as it is diluted due to diffusion or mixing within porous materials. The extraction of oil using water, a surfactant solution of 4% CTAB in water, and a foam produced form the surfactant solution is observed using two dimensional flows between parallel slides containing cylindrical obstacles. The fluid motion is visualized. The …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Successfully distributing shelf food requires treatment to eliminate microorganisms. Current chemical methods, such as chlorine wash, can alter food quality while only being effective for a limited time. Cold atmospheric pressure plasmas (CAPs) can eradicate the microorganisms responsible for food spoilage and foodborne illness. Optimizing CAP treatments requires understanding the reactive species generated and relating them to eradication efficiency. Recent studies have used optical emission spectroscopy (OES) to determine the species generated in a sealed package that would hold food. In this study,we supplement the OES results with optical absorption spectroscopy (OAS) using the same gases (helium, nitrogen, compressed air, …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Currently available nanotechnologies are capable of creating various nanostructures in controlled dimensions such as particles (0D), wires (1D), membranes (2D), and cubes (3D) by exploiting “top-down” or “bottom-up” methods. However, there exist limitations to systematically construct hierarchical nanostructures with geometric complexities. This study is focused on developing a novel nanofabrication strategy that can rationally produce a set of hierarchical nanostructures configured with precisely engineered facets, tip shapes, and tectonic motifs. We aim to identify a collection of optimal materials, array layouts, basic components, and nanofabrication techniques for the production of hierarchical nanostructures by exploiting device-grade semiconducting silicon materials. To accomplish …

3d Modeling Of Murine Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms: Quantification Of Segmentation And Volumetric Reconstruction, Paula A. Sarmiento, Amelia R. Adelsperger, Craig J. Goergen Ph.D.
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) cause 5,900 deaths in the United States each year. Surgical intervention is clinically studied by non-invasive techniques such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. However, three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound imaging has become an inexpensive alternative and useful tool to characterize aneurysms, allowing for reconstruction of the vessel, quantification of hemodynamics through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, and possible prediction of aortic expansion and rupture. However, current analysis techniques for these images require the use of multiple software platforms for either modeling or simulation, prompting the need for alternatives to improve data processing. This study monitors the …

Atomistic Configuration Interaction Simulation Tool For Semiconductor Based Quantum Computing Devices, Jingbo Wu, Archana Tankasala, Jim Fonseca, Rajib Rahman, Gerhard Klimeck
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Solid-state devices are promising candidates for quantum computing applications due to obvious advantages in compatibility with semiconductor fabrication technologies and the extremely long coherent times of electron and nuclear spins in these devices. In such devices, electron interactions are crucial for single and two qubit gate operations. Thus it is essential to evaluate these electron-electron interactions accurately for precise qubit control. It is shown that Atomistic Configuration Interaction can be used to accurately determine electron-electron interactions in realistic semiconductor quantum computing devices. In this work, an online simulation tool on Atomistic Configuration Interaction has been implemented and published on nanoHUB.org, …
