Magnus Effect In Duct Flow, Jesse S. Batko, Cameron W. Clarke, Kenneth W. Smith Jr.

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The following research paper details the preliminary research carried out by this team. The project was originally conceived to determine if Magnus Lift could be utilized in an unconventional way to assist rockets during takeoff. Several conceptual designs were proposed, but the idea was scrapped when it became apparent that the team would not be able to generate the desired lift without inducing significant amounts of drag and additional weight on a rocket. Instead, the team focused on researching an interesting topic that hasn’t been previously explored: Magnus lift on a cylinder within a duct.

An experimental procedure that could …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research concerns the CONAE Microwave Radiometer (MWR), on board the Aquarius/SAC-D platform. MWR's main purpose is to provide measurements that are simultaneous and spatially collocated with those of NASA's Aquarius radiometer/scatterometer. For this reason, knowledge of the MWR antenna beam footprint geolocation is crucial to mission success. In particular, this thesis addresses an on-orbit validation of the MWR antenna beam pointing, using calculated MWR instantaneous field of view (IFOV) centers, provided in the CONAE L-1B science data product. This procedure compares L-1B MWR IFOV centers at land/water crossings against high-resolution coastline maps. MWR IFOV locations versus time are computed …

A Framework For Interoperability On The United States Electric Grid Infrastructure, Stuart Laval Jan 2015

A Framework For Interoperability On The United States Electric Grid Infrastructure, Stuart Laval

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Historically, the United States (US) electric grid has been a stable one-way power delivery infrastructure that supplies centrally-generated electricity to its predictably consuming demand. However, the US electric grid is now undergoing a huge transformation from a simple and static system to a complex and dynamic network, which is starting to interconnect intermittent distributed energy resources (DERs), portable electric vehicles (EVs), and load-altering home automation devices, that create bidirectional power flow or stochastic load behavior. In order for this grid of the future to effectively embrace the high penetration of these disruptive and fast-responding digital technologies without compromising its safety, …

Body Mass Bias Mitigation For Females In Military Physical Readiness Testing Through Load Carriage Implementation, Aaron Yeaton Jan 2015

Body Mass Bias Mitigation For Females In Military Physical Readiness Testing Through Load Carriage Implementation, Aaron Yeaton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The US Military requires specific fitness testing, known as the Physical Readiness Test (PRT), for its members to determine their overall fitness levels. The test currently being used has been shown to have bias towards heavier mass individuals of up to 20%. Prior research has been completed and several recommendations have been made to eliminate mass bias, but this has been conducted almost exclusively on males. There is very little data and research on military physical fitness testing for women besides combat specific evolution exercises. A possibility exists to eliminate the bias for females through implementing load carriage during PRT …

The Effects Of Chronic Sleep Deprivation On Sustained Attention: A Study Of Brain Dynamic Functional Connectivity, Yiling He

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is estimated that about 35-40% of adults in the U.S. suffer from insufficient sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation has become a prevalent phenomenon because of contemporary lifestyle and work-related factors. Sleep deprivation can reduce the capabilities and efficiency of attentional performance by impairing perception, increasing effort to maintain concentration, as well as introducing vision disturbance. Thus, it is important to understand the neural mechanisms behind how chronic sleep deprivation impairs sustained attention. In recent years, more attention has been paid to the study of the integration between anatomically distributed and functionally connected brain regions. Functional connectivity has been widely used …

Selection Of A Realistic Viscous Vortex Tangential Velocity Profile For Computer Simulation Of Vortex-Structure Interaction, M. N. Strasser, R. P. Selvam

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Structure loading by vortices is a relevant phenomenon in numerous fields of engineering significance. Computer modelling is a powerful tool that can be used to study the loading produced on structures by impacting vortices. Realistic simulation of vortex-loading of structures necessitates the use of a realistic vortex tangential velocity profile (TVP). The present study compiles measured TVPs from various types of experimentally-produced vortices as well as real-world tornado and hurricane vortices. The measured TVPs are compared with commonly-used, analytical TVPs. Analytical TVPs that realistically represent the range of measured TVPs are identified and selected for use in future computer simulation …

Efficient Calculation Of Large Finite Periodic Structures Based On Surface Wave Analysis, Xiaoyan Y.Z. Xiong, Ling Ling Meng, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha, Fan Yang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electromagnetic modeling of practical finite periodic structures is a topic of growing interest. Due to the truncation of infinite periodic structures, surface waves will be excited and localized near discontinuous interfaces leading to the edge effect. In this work, surface waves are numerically extracted and their magnitudes and decay rates are analyzed for different materials and geometries. Based on the exponential decay of the surface wave, a novel method is developed by connecting the solution to the large finite array problem with that to a relatively small one to achieve low complexity and memory consumption. The method numerically reconstructs …

Dispersion Characteristics Analysis Of One Dimensional Multiple Periodic Structures And Their Applications To Antennas, Zi Long Ma, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Shulabh Gupta, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a general characterization of one dimensional multiple periodic (MP) structures for electromagnetic transmission and radiation. Studies are conducted from three aspects: Firstly, the dispersion relations of non-dispersive (conventional) and dispersive (composite right/left-handed (CRLH)) materials are analyzed. Regarding each category of materials, detailed analyses for distributed layered media and lumped circuits are presented. Through studies, we found that the periodicity increase opens up multiple stopbands. According to our physical explanations and numerical results, the relation between stopbands and periodicity is clarified. Additionally, the periodicity increase also reduces the separation distance of space harmonic modes along the phase constant …

Thevenin Equivalence In Disorderless Quantum Networks, C. A. Cain, Cheng-Hsiao Wu Jan 2015

Thevenin Equivalence In Disorderless Quantum Networks, C. A. Cain, Cheng-Hsiao Wu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We outline the procedure of extending the Thévenin equivalence principle for classical electric circuits to reducing Aharonov-Bohm-based quantum networks into equivalent models. With examples, we show from first principles how the requirements are related to the electron band structure's Fermi level and the lattice spacing of the network. Quantum networks of varying degrees of coupling strength from four basic classifications of single and double entangled loops sharing symmetry and highly correlated band structures are used to demonstrate the concept. We show the limitations of how the principle may be applied. Several classes of examples are given and their equivalent forms …

Low Complexity Polynomial Expansion Detector For Massive Mimo Uplink With Multiple-Antenna Users, An An Lu, Xiqi Gao, Chengshan Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a low complexity polynomial expansion (PE) detector for massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) uplink transmissions is proposed. In contrast to most massive MIMO systems in the literature, where single-antenna user equipment's (UEs) are assumed, multiple-antenna UEs are employed in this paper. Furthermore, each link between a user and the base station forms a jointly correlated Rician fading channel. The PE detector reduces the complexity of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) detector by replacing the matrix inversion with an approximate matrix polynomial. In the design of the low complexity PE detector, the approximations of the moments of the …

Linear Precoding For The Mimo Multiple Access Channel With Finite Alphabet Inputs And Statistical Csi, Yongpeng Wu, Chao Kai Wen, Chengshan Xiao, Xiqi Gao, Robert Schober

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we investigate the design of linear precoders for the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channel (MAC). We assume that statistical channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitters and consider the problem under the practical finite alphabet input assumption. First, we derive an asymptotic (in the large system limit) expression for the weighted sum rate (WSR) of the MIMO MAC with finite alphabet inputs and Weichselberger's MIMO channel model. Subsequently, we obtain the optimal structures of the linear precoders of the users maximizing the asymptotic WSR and an iterative algorithm for determining the precoders. We show that …

An Efficient Linear Precoding Algorithm For Energy Harvesting Transmitter With Finite-Alphabet Inputs And Instantaneous Csi, Xiaodong Zhu, Weiliang Zeng, Chengshan Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper investigates the precoder design in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with energy harvester. The objective is to maximize the sum of mutual information (MI) over multiple time slots with causal knowledge of energy arrivals. Different from existing works, the system is considered with finite-alphabet inputs, and the transmitter is assumed to know not only the statistical channel state information (CSI) but also the instantaneous CSI of the current time slot at the beginning of each time slot. The optimal precoder design leads to an intractable multi- dimensional matrix optimization problem. We show that this difficult optimization problem can be …
