Orientation Error Analysis And Compenstation Of Orthogonal Array With Two-Dimension Vector Sensors, Peng Han, Chao Ren, Zhongge Zhang, Grant L. Steven Jan 2015

Orientation Error Analysis And Compenstation Of Orthogonal Array With Two-Dimension Vector Sensors, Peng Han, Chao Ren, Zhongge Zhang, Grant L. Steven

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the application of underwater target orientation using two-dimensional differential pressure vector sensors, both the elements of the vector sensors and the compensation algorithm will introduce target orientation errors. In this paper, simulation results of these target orientation errors reveal that channel response inconsistency errors contribute much more influence on the orthogonal array compared with the SNR, the target incident angle, and the unit location displacement. Based on this observation, a compensation algorithm for orientation estimation error is proposed and testing results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Random Walk Based Capacitance Extraction For 3d Ics With Cylindrical Inter-Tier-Vias, Wenjian Yu, Chao Zhang, Qing Wang, Yiyu Shi Jan 2015

Random Walk Based Capacitance Extraction For 3d Ics With Cylindrical Inter-Tier-Vias, Wenjian Yu, Chao Zhang, Qing Wang, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Three-dimensional integrated circuits (3D ICs) make use of the vertical dimension for smaller footprint, higher speed, lower power consumption, and better timing performance. In 3D ICs, the inter-tier-via (ITV) is a critical enabling technique because it forms vertical signal and power paths. Accordingly, it is imperative to accurately and efficiently extract the electrostatic capacitances of ITVs using field solvers. Unfortunately, the cylindrical via shape presents major challenges to most of the existing methods. To address this issue, we develop a novel floating random walk (FRW) method by rotating the transition cube to suit the cylindrical surface and devising a special …

Real Time Anomaly Detection In Wide Area Monitoring Of Smart Grids, Jie Wu, Jinjun Xiong, Prasenjit Shil, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The real time anomaly detection in wide area monitoring of smart grids is critical to enhance the reliability of power systems. However, capturing the features of anomalous interruption and then detecting them at real time is difficult for large-scale smart grids, because the measurement data volume and complexity increases drastically with the exponential growth of data from the immense intelligent monitoring devices to be rolled out and the need for fast information retrieval from those mass data. Most of existing anomaly detection methods fail to handle it well. This paper proposes a spatial-Temporal correlation based anomalous behavior model to capture …

Fast And Accurate Emissivity And Absolute Temperature Maps Measurement For Integrated Circuits, Hsueh Ling Yu, Yih Lang Li, Tzu Yi Liao, Tianchen Wang, Yiyu Shi Jan 2015

Fast And Accurate Emissivity And Absolute Temperature Maps Measurement For Integrated Circuits, Hsueh Ling Yu, Yih Lang Li, Tzu Yi Liao, Tianchen Wang, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The comparison of temperatures (temperature correlation) obtained by measuring instruments and by thermal simulation is commonly necessary. Currently the way in which thermal maps are obtained by infrared thermographer yields inaccurate results since the emissivity values of all elements in an IC are ignored and measurement method assumes a constant emissivity. Without the correct settings of emissivity in infrared thermographer, the temperature variation could reach up to as high as 300 %. Coating black paint on the IC surface is a widely used method to assume the IC with constant emissivity and simplify the measurement procedures. Coating a uniform black …

Opportunistic Through-Silicon-Via Inductor Utilization In Lc Resonant Clocks: Concept And Algorithms, Umamaheswara Rao Tida, Varun Mittapalli, Cheng Zhuo, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

LC resonant clock is an attracting option for low power on-chip clock distribution designs. However, a major limiting factor to its implementation is the large area overhead due to the conventional spiral inductors. On the other hand, idle through-silicon-vias (TSVs) in three-dimensional integrated circuits (3D ICs) can form vertical inductors with minimal footprint and little noise coupling with horizontal traces, particularly suitable for the application of LC resonant clock. However, due to the strict constraints on the location of idle TSVs, the use of the TSV inductor is limited by the constrained choices of its location, inductance and quality factor. …

Propulsion Theory Of Flapping Airfoils, Comparison With Computational Fluid Dynamics, Doug F. Hunsaker, W. F. Phillips Jan 2015

Propulsion Theory Of Flapping Airfoils, Comparison With Computational Fluid Dynamics, Doug F. Hunsaker, W. F. Phillips

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

The thrust, required power, and propulsive efficiency of a flapping airfoil as predicted by the well-known Theodorsen model are compared with solutions obtained from grid- resolved inviscid computational fluid dynamics. A straight-forward summary of Theodorsen’s flapping airfoil model is presented using updated terminology and symbols. This shows that both axial and normal reduced frequencies are of significant importance. The axial reduced frequency is based on the chord length and the normal reduced frequency is based on the plunging amplitude. Computational fluid dynamics solutions are presented over the range of both reduced frequencies typically encountered in the forward flight of birds. …

Direct Strength Method For Steel Deck, American Iron And Steel Institute

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)

With the proposed reorganization of the AISI S100 Standard, the Direct Strength Method (DSM) will take a position of equal footing with the Equivalent Width Method (EWM) for calculating strength. The majority of previous DSM studies focus on C and Z profiles while little study of panel sections, especially steel deck sections, has been performed. A study was undertaken to determine and compare the behavior and usable strength of existing floor and roof deck sections with both DSM and EWM. The Cornell University – Finite Strip Method (CUFSM) was used for the elastic buckling analysis, taking into account the wide, …

Recent advances in electrodes for noninvasive recording of electroencephalograms expand opportunities collecting such data for diagnosis of neurological disorders and brain–computer interfaces. Existing technologies, however, cannot be used effectively in continuous, uninterrupted modes for more than a few days due to irritation and irreversible degradation in the electrical and mechanical properties of the skin interface. Here we introduce a soft, foldable collection of electrodes in open, fractal mesh geometries that can mount directly and chronically on the complex surface topology of the auricle and the mastoid, to provide high-fidelity and long-term capture of electroencephalograms in ways that avoid any significant …

Skin-Like Electronics For A Persistent Brain-Computer Interface, Woon-Hong Yeo, Yongkuk Lee

Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Publications

There exists a high demand for a continuous, persistent recording of non-invasive electroencephalograms in both clinical and research fields. Head-cap electrodes with metal conductors and conductive gels are widely used and considered as the gold standard for such measurement. This physical interface, however, is poorly suited to uninterrupted, long-term use due to the uncomfortable rigid electrodes, skin irritation due to the gel, and electrical degradation as the gel dries. These issues can be addressed by using a newly developed, dry form of electronics. Here, we briefly review a class of soft electronic technology in the aspects of mechanics, materials, and …

Young's Modulus Of [111] Germanium Nanowires, M. Maksud, J. Yoo, C. T. Harris, N. K. R. Palapati, A. Subramanian

Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Publications

This paper reports a diameter-independent Young’s modulus of 91.9 ± 8.2 GPa for [111] Germaniumnanowires (Ge NWs). When the surface oxide layer is accounted for using a core-shell NW approximation, the YM of the Ge core approaches a near theoretical value of 147.6 ± 23.4 GPa. The ultimate strength of a NW device was measured at 10.9 GPa, which represents a very high experimental-to-theoretical strength ratio of ∼75%. With increasing interest in this material system as a high-capacity lithium-ion battery anode, the presented data provide inputs that are essential in predicting its lithiation-induced stress fields and fracture behavior.

Double Vault Composting Latrines In Rural Paraguay : Feasible Construction And Optimal Use, Paul T. Pebler Jan 2015

Double Vault Composting Latrines In Rural Paraguay : Feasible Construction And Optimal Use, Paul T. Pebler

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Water resource depletion and sanitation are growing problems around the world. A solution to both of these problems is the use of composting latrines, as it requires no water and has been recommended by the World Health Organization as an improved sanitation technology. However, little analysis has been done on the decomposition process occurring inside the latrine, including what temperatures are reached and what variables most affect the composting process. Having better knowledge of how outside variables affect composting latrines can aid development workers on the choice of implementing such technology, and to better educate the users on the appropriate …

Electrochemical Processes In Microfluidics Systems Under Ac Electric Fields, Ran An

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Alternating current (AC) electric signal has been widely applied in microfluidic systems to induce AC electrokinetic behavior. AC electrokinetic phenomena including AC electrophoresis, AC dielectrophoresis, AC electroosmosis flow and AC electrothermal flow are widely applied in (bio)particle sorting, separation and concentration and micropumps. However, numbers of non-ideal AC electrokinetic behaviors have been reported: human erythrocyte deformation in AC dielectrophoresis system has been observed; flow reversal in AC electroosmosis flow pumps has also been reported. In this dissertation, a systematic study on human erythrocyte crenation in AC dielectrophoresis system was firstly conducted. Multiple possible physical mechanisms inducing cell crenation including temperature, …

Numerical Investigation On Charring Ablator Geometric Effects: Study Of Stardust Sample Return Capsule Heat Shield, Haoyue Weng, Alexandre Martin Jan 2015

Numerical Investigation On Charring Ablator Geometric Effects: Study Of Stardust Sample Return Capsule Heat Shield, Haoyue Weng, Alexandre Martin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Sample geometry is very influential in small charring ablative articles where 1D assumption might not be accurate. In heat shield design, 1D is often assumed since the nose radius is much larger than the thickness of charring. Whether the 1D assumption is valid for the heat shield is unknown. Therefore, the geometric effects of Stardust sample return capsule heat shield are numerically studied using a material response program. The developed computer program models material charring, conductive heat transfer, surface energy balance, pyrolysis gas transport and orthotropic material properties in 3D Cartesian coordinates. Simulation results show that the centerline temperatures predicted …

Contours For Planar Cracks Growing In Three Dimensions, Louis Milton Brock Jan 2015

Contours For Planar Cracks Growing In Three Dimensions, Louis Milton Brock

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

A three-dimensional dynamic steady state analysis for extension of a semi-infinite plane crack is considered. Fracture is brittle and driven by loads applied to the crack surfaces. An analytical solution is obtained, and examined in light of two criteria: energy release (rate) and strain energy density. Introduction of a quasipolar coordinate system allows, for each criterion, generation of a nonlinear first-order differential equation for the distance from the origin to any point on the crack edge. These in turn give insight into the crack contour generated by the crack edge. In particular, for loading by compressive point forces, the equation …
