Danger In The Training Gap, William Korner Jan 2015

Danger In The Training Gap, William Korner

Aviation / Aeronautics / Aerospace International Research Conference

Loss of Control in flight has accounted for the largest share of worldwide passenger deaths over the past ten years. Not Controlled Flight into Terrain, not equipment failure or malfunction, not even weather – but Loss of Control, in flight.

And there is a disturbing caveat to this fact: In every one of those accidents over the past ten years where there was a large loss of life – highly trained and legally qualified pilots were at the controls of the aircraft involved. Meaning these accidents should have been preventable – yet they were not, because the pilots in command …

Accidental Poison: Analysis Of 1,4-Butanediol In A Popular Children's Arts And Crafts Toy, Christopher R. Dockery, John H. Shugart, Jonathan D. Parker, William J. Lawson Jan 2015

Accidental Poison: Analysis Of 1,4-Butanediol In A Popular Children's Arts And Crafts Toy, Christopher R. Dockery, John H. Shugart, Jonathan D. Parker, William J. Lawson

Faculty Articles

A popular children's arts and crafts toy made international headlines when it was discovered that 1,4-butanediol had been substituted into some of its formulations. The chemical 1,4-butanediol rapidly converts to the date-rape drug g-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) upon ingestion and resulted in the accidental poisoning of some children. In this experiment, students extract 1,4-butanediol from commercially available toy beads (or prepared simulations) using their knowledge of pharmaceutical chemistry, solubility, etc. Using case studies available in the literature, students develop a quantitative analysis experiment for 1,4-butanediol extracted from the toy beads and, through approximation, relate the extractable amount of 1,4-butanediol to dose-response …

Use Of Advanced Traffic Signal Status Warning Systems For, Yi Qi, Bimin Mao

Faculty Publications and Scholarship

Signalized intersections are one of the most complicated and risky locations in the transportation network. If drivers make misjudgments and run a red light by mistake, it may put themselves and other road users at a great risk. To assist drivers in making the right decisions when passing through a signalized intersection, two Advanced Traffic Signal Status Warning Systems (ATSSWS), the Variable Message Sign (VMS) based warning system and the Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) based onboard driver warning system, were designed and tested by driving simulator-based experiments. The results revealed that both ATSSWSs can significantly reduce vehicles’ maximum deceleration rates, …

Dissertations

Road traffic accidents are a significant cause of deaths worldwide and there is a global focus on understanding accident contributory factors and implementing prevention strategies. Although accident statistics are steadily improving, effective prevention must be persistent, evidence based and properly resourced. This research aimed to extract fatal traffic accident prediction from UK STATS19 accident data using C5.0 and Chaid decision trees and Bayes net classification models. Data was grouped as either fatal or non-fatal. The class imbalance due to fatal accident infrequency was considered and data transformation and sampling techniques were applied to increase prediction likelihood. Chaid was used for …

Growth plate fractures account for nearly 18.5% of fractures in children. Depending on the type and severity of the injury, inhibited bone growth or angular deformity caused by bone forming in place of the growth plate can occur. The current treatment involves removal of the bony bar and replacing it with a filler substance, such as a free fat graft. Unfortunately, reformation of the bony bar frequently occurs, preventing the native growth plate from regenerating. The goal of this pilot study was to determine whether biodegradable scaffolds can enhance native growth plate regeneration following a simulated injury that resulted in …

Design, Fabrication And Characterization Of Mim Diodes And Frequency Selective Thermal Emitters For Solar Energy Harvesting And Detection Devices, Saumya Sharma Jan 2015

Design, Fabrication And Characterization Of Mim Diodes And Frequency Selective Thermal Emitters For Solar Energy Harvesting And Detection Devices, Saumya Sharma

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Energy harvesting using rectennas for infrared radiation continues to be a challenge due to the lack of fast switching diodes capable of rectification at THz frequencies. Metal insulator metal diodes which may be used at 30 THz must show adequate nonlinearity for small signal rectification such as 30 mV. In a rectenna assembly, the voltage signal received as an output from a single nanoantenna can be as small as ~30µV. Thus, only a hybrid array of nanoantennas can be sufficient to provide a signal in the ~30mV range for the diode to be able to rectify around 30THz. A metal-insulator-metal …

Analytical Report On Consumer Gasoline Choices, Michael Stanley Jan 2015

Analytical Report On Consumer Gasoline Choices, Michael Stanley

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

Most gas in the United States comes from the same few refineries, where different brands of gasoline are created as they are pumped into the fuel tankers, as opposed to individual retail facilities. Dr. Edward Murphy of the American Petroleum Institute explains that “base gas is a freely traded commodity that must meet certain government specifications. It flows through common pipelines into commingled storage tanks” (Blumberg). Although brands of gasoline have major differences, those differences are not due to origin or refining process, since they are processed from crude oil into gasoline together. The difference in the brands comes late …

Contact Analysis For Coupling Of Plates And Screws In Fracture Fixation Of Cortical Bone, Gaffar Gailani, Rachid Moumni, Malek Brahimi Jan 2015

Contact Analysis For Coupling Of Plates And Screws In Fracture Fixation Of Cortical Bone, Gaffar Gailani, Rachid Moumni, Malek Brahimi

Publications and Research

Internal fixation is a common treatment for bone fracture. Bone fracture occurs due to different reasons such as motor vehicle accidents, falling,…etc. The treatment is performed by fixing plate and screws to the fracture site. Lack of stability of the implants (plates and screws) may lead to delay in healing or failure of treatment. Micro-motion between the implant and the bone may cause formation of fibrous tissue around the screw which will lead to implant loosening. On the other hands, firm fixing of the conventional implants (Dynamic Compression Plates) may lead to delay resorption and delay in healing. Recently, Locked …

Fuel Cells As Electric Vehicle Range Extenders, Florida Solar Energy Center, R. Paul Brooker Jan 2015

Fuel Cells As Electric Vehicle Range Extenders, Florida Solar Energy Center, R. Paul Brooker

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Fuel cells were modeled as range extenders for electric vehicles. In this application, the fuel cell would supplement a medium sized (16kWh) battery in order to increase the range of the electric vehicle. The fuel cell range extender is compared to an internal combustion engine (ICE) based range extender in terms of vehicle fuel economy and cost per mile driven. Since the fuel cell is about 40% more efficient than the ICE, the fuel economy of a fuel cell range extender was estimated to be 68 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPGe), while the economy of an ICE range extender …

Sensible Air To Air Heat Recovery Strategies In A Passive House, Santiago Martin Rodriguez-Anderson Jan 2015

Sensible Air To Air Heat Recovery Strategies In A Passive House, Santiago Martin Rodriguez-Anderson

Dissertations and Theses

Due to rising energy costs and concerns about global climate change, high performance buildings are more in demand than ever before. With roughly 20% of the total energy consumption in the United States being devoted to residential use, this sector represents a significant opportunity for future savings. There are many guidelines and standards for reducing building energy consumption. One of the most stringent is the Passive House Standard. The standard requires that that air infiltration is less than or equal to 0.6 air changes per hour at a 50 Pascal pressure difference (ACH 50), annual heating energy is less than …

Static Conflict Detection For A Policy Language, Alix Trou, Robert Dockins, Andrew Tolmach Jan 2015

Static Conflict Detection For A Policy Language, Alix Trou, Robert Dockins, Andrew Tolmach

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a static control flow analysis used in the Simple Unified Policy Programming Language (SUPPL) compiler to detect internally inconsistent policies. For example, an access control policy can decide to both “allow” and “deny” access for a user; such an inconsistency is called a conflict. Policies in Suppl. follow the Event-Condition-Action paradigm; predicates are used to model conditions and event handlers are written in an imperative way. The analysis is twofold; it first computes a superset of all conflicts by looking for a combination of actions in the event handlers that might violate a user-supplied definition of conflicts. SMT …

The Effects Of Multiple Probes On The Hybridization Of Target Dna On Surfaces, Ryan C. Welling, Thomas A. Knotts Iv Jan 2015

The Effects Of Multiple Probes On The Hybridization Of Target Dna On Surfaces, Ryan C. Welling, Thomas A. Knotts Iv

Faculty Publications

DNA microarrays have disruptive potential in many fields including genetics and medicine, but the technology has yet to find widespread clinical use due to poor reliability. Microarrays work on the principle of hybridization and can only be as dependable as this process is reliable. As such, a significant amount of theoretical research has been done to understand hybridization on surfaces on the molecular level. Previous simulations of a target strand with a single, surface-tethered probe molecule have yielded valuable insights, but such is an ideal system and little is known about the effects of multiple probes—a situation that more closely …

Risk Perception In Aviation Students: Weather Matters, Ric Ferraro Phd, Darci Vandyke, Mary Zander, Krista Anderson, Bethany Kuehlen

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Sixty-three aviation major students and 71 non-aviation major students participated in an experiment concerning aviation experience and risk perception (Risk Perception Scale, RPS; Hunter, 2002). Non-aviation students rated three of the RPS risk scenarios (P2Fly, P2Life, P2 Base) as having higher perceived risk than aviation students with the exception of the weather risk scenarios (P2WX). Aviation students perceived the P2WX scenarios to be significantly more risky. These results have implications for how future pilots perceive risk.
