Evaluating The Constructability Of Nudeck Precast Concrete Deck Panels For Kearney Bypass Project, George Morcous, Afshin Hatami, Micheal Assad

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

The first generation of precast concrete deck system, NUDECK, was implemented on the Skyline Bridge, Omaha, NE in 2004. The second generation of NUDECK system was developed to further simplify the system and improve its constructability and durability. The new generation consists of full-width full-depth precast concrete deck panels that are 12 ft long to minimize the number of deck panels and transverse joints, and consequently accelerate bridge construction. It also uses covered individual pockets and bundled shear connectors at 4 ft spacing to simplify panel and girder production and eliminate the need for deck overlay. Precast deck panels are …

BACKGROUND: Simple glycoside surfactants represent a class of chemicals that are produced from renewable raw materials. They are considered to be environmentally safe and, therefore, are increasingly used as pharmaceuticals, detergents, and personal care products. Although they display low to moderate toxicity in cells in culture, the underlying mechanisms of surfactant-mediated cytotoxicity are poorly investigated.

RESULTS: We synthesized a series of triazole-linked (fluoro)alkyl β-glucopyranosides using the copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne reaction, one of many popular "click" reactions that enable efficient preparation of structurally diverse compounds, and investigate the toxicity of this novel class of surfactant in the Jurkat cell line. Similar to …

Counter-Doped Jte, An Edge Termination For Hv Sic Devices With Increased Tolerance To The Surface Charge, Chih Fang Huang, Hua Chih Hsu, Kuan Wei Chu, Li Heng Lee, Ming Jinn Tsai, Kung Yen Lee, Feng Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a comparison of different techniques for SiC high-voltage devices is performed using numerical simulations. In particular, the method of counter doping (CD) introduced in the junction termination extension (JTE) region to create a multizone termination effect is investigated. Simulation shows that compared with the other edge termination techniques, CD-JTE greatly reduces the sensitivity of breakdown voltage (BV) to JTE doses and surface charges. The multizone CD-JTE with outer rings shows that for a 30-μm thick epi-layer, 90% of the theoretical BV is achievable with a wide tolerance of 11 x 1012 cm2 to the JTE …

Waste And Duplication In Nasa Programs: The Need To Enhance U.S. Space Program Efficiency, Bert Chapman Feb 2015

Waste And Duplication In Nasa Programs: The Need To Enhance U.S. Space Program Efficiency, Bert Chapman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The U.S. Government faces acute budgetary deficits and national debt problems in the Obama Administration. These problems have been brought about by decades of unsustainable government spending affecting all agencies including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. (NASA). An outgrowth of this fiscal profligacy is the presence of wasteful and duplicative programs within NASA that prevent this agency from achieving its space science and human spaceflight objectives. These problems occur due to mismanagement of these programs from NASA and the creation of these programs by the U.S. Congress and congressional committees. This occurs because congressional appropriators tend to be more …

Development Of Local Transient Heat Flux Measurements In An Axisymmetric Hybrid Rocket Nozzle, Christopher D'Elia Feb 2015

Development Of Local Transient Heat Flux Measurements In An Axisymmetric Hybrid Rocket Nozzle, Christopher D'Elia

Master's Theses

A method of performing local transient heat flux measurements in an uncooled axisymmetric hybrid rocket nozzle is presented. Surface temperatures are collected at various axial locations during short duration tests and post processed using finite difference techniques to determine local transient heat fluxes and film coefficients. Comparisons are made between the collected data and the complete Bartz model. Although strong agreement is observed in certain sections of the nozzle, ideal steady state conditions are not observed to entirely validate the Bartz model for hybrid rocket nozzles. An experimental error analysis indicates the experimental heat fluxes are accurate within ±5.2% and …

Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Bulk Organic Precursors And Disinfection Byproduct Formation For Advanced Oxidation Processes, Brooke K. Mayer, Erin Daugherty, Morteza Abbaszadegan

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are gaining traction as they offer mineralization potential rather than transferring contaminants between media. However, AOPs operated with limited energy and/or chemical inputs can exacerbate disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation, even as precursors such as dissolved organic carbon, UV254, and specific UV absorbance (SUVA) decrease. This study examined the relationship between DBP precursors and formation using TiO2 photocatalysis experiments, external AOP and non-AOP data, and predictive DBP models. The top-performing indicator, SUVA, generally correlated positively with trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids, but limited-energy photocatalysis yielded contrasting negative correlations. The accuracy of predicted DBP values from …

An Affordance-Based Methodology For Package Design, Javier De La Fuente Phd, Stephanie Gustafson, Colleen L. Twomey, Laura Bix Feb 2015

An Affordance-Based Methodology For Package Design, Javier De La Fuente Phd, Stephanie Gustafson, Colleen L. Twomey, Laura Bix

Industrial Technology and Packaging

The term affordance describes an object's utilitarian function or actionable possibilities. Product designers have taken great interest in the concept of affordances because of the bridge they provide relating to design, the interpretation of design and, ultimately, functionality in the hands of consumers. These concepts have been widely studied and applied in the field of psychology but have had limited formal application to packaging design and evaluation. We believe that the concepts related to affordances will reveal novel opportunities for packaging innovation. To catalyse this, presented work had the following objectives: (a) to propose a method by which packaging designers …

Biogeography-Based Optimization In Noisy Environments, Haiping Ma, Minrui Fei, Daniel J. Simon, Zixiang Chen Feb 2015

Biogeography-Based Optimization In Noisy Environments, Haiping Ma, Minrui Fei, Daniel J. Simon, Zixiang Chen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Biogeography-based optimization (BBO) is a new evolutionary optimization algorithm that is based on the science of biogeography. In this paper, BBO is applied to the optimization of problems in which the fitness function is corrupted by random noise. Noise interferes with the BBO immigration rate and emigration rate, and adversely affects optimization performance. We analyse the effect of noise on BBO using a Markov model. We also incorporate re-sampling in BBO, which samples the fitness of each candidate solution several times and calculates the average to alleviate the effects of noise. BBO performance on noisy benchmark functions is compared with …

Highly-Selective Chemiresistive Sensing And Analysis Of Vapors Using Functionalized Nanotubes, Deon Hines Feb 2015

Highly-Selective Chemiresistive Sensing And Analysis Of Vapors Using Functionalized Nanotubes, Deon Hines

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Specifically, the project involves the development of a diversified array of nanostructured gas-sensors comprised of selectively, novel surface-functionalized carbon nanotubes (for analyte selectivity by virtue of functionality). Harnessing carbon nanotubes with various electron withdrawing and donating groups help in determining their affinity toward certain prognostic gaseous markers thus increasing specificity of such created sensors. We have devised synthetic routes that have led to the facile production of covalently polyfunctionalized nanotubes in high yield. Seven carbon nanotube analogues were systematically considered and then chemically synthesized, from pristine single-walled nanotubes (SWNT's), for use as the main component of sensory units that was …

Estimation Of Outer-Middle Ear Transmission Using Dpoaes And Fractional-Order Modeling Of Human Middle Ear, Maryam Naghibolhosseini Feb 2015

Estimation Of Outer-Middle Ear Transmission Using Dpoaes And Fractional-Order Modeling Of Human Middle Ear, Maryam Naghibolhosseini

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Our ability to hear depends primarily on sound waves traveling through the outer and middle ear toward the inner ear. Hence, the characteristics of the outer and middle ear affect sound transmission to/from the inner ear. The role of the middle and outer ear in sound transmission is particularly important for otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), which are sound signals generated in a healthy cochlea, and recorded by a sensitive microphone placed in the ear canal. OAEs are used to evaluate the health and function of the cochlea; however, they are also affected by outer and middle ear characteristics. To …

Development Of Functional Interactions Among Cortical And Trabecular Traits During Growth Of The Lumbar Vertebral Body, Melissa Ramcharan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Variation in bone traits that contribute to increased fracture risk in the elderly is mainly established in adulthood. Previous studies have shown that in adults, cortical and trabecular traits are functionally related. How variations in traits develop to establish mechanical function in adult bone is not well understood. In this study, we examined temporal changes in the development of cortical and trabecular traits during growth in mouse lumbar vertebral body structures that have a wide range of genetic variants. We determined a sequence of events among traits that would suggest how functional bone structures developed. Examining bones in A/J, C57/BL6 …

Aerospike Rocket Motor Structural Webbing, Andrew Brock

Master's Theses

A labscale hybrid rocket motor test stand has been developed for research at Cal Poly. The primary focus of research using this rig has been the development of regenerative cooling techniques using nitrous oxide as coolant and oxidizer, as well as validation of technologies relating to the annular aerospike nozzle. In order to prevent undesirable deflection of the cantilevered spike, a structural stiffening web, referred to as “The Spider,” is proposed. The Spider resembles a three-spoked wheel, with the aerospike held by the inner hub and the chamber walls abutting the outer radius.

The Spider, placed upstream of the nozzle, …

A Low-Cost Loop Measurement Tool For Dc-Dc Converters, Shouee B. Lin Feb 2015

A Low-Cost Loop Measurement Tool For Dc-Dc Converters, Shouee B. Lin

Master's Theses

Loop measurements are very important in evaluating dynamic performance of DC-DC converters. In this thesis, a small loop measurement tool as a low-cost alternative to a network analyzer is proposed. The tool is particularly useful when a network analyzer is not always available for use, for example when engineers are working on-site with customers or when a network analyzer is not affordable due to their relatively high cost. The design, simulation, and hardware implementation of the inexpensive loop measurement tool will be presented in this thesis. Results from computer simulation and hardware prototype demonstrate the ability of the proposed tool …

Improved Colorization For Night Vision System Based On Image Splitting, Ehsan A. Ali, Samuel Peter Kozaitis Feb 2015

Improved Colorization For Night Vision System Based On Image Splitting, Ehsan A. Ali, Samuel Peter Kozaitis

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The success of a color night navigation system often depends on the accuracy of the colors in the resulting image. Often, small regions can incorrectly adopt the color of large regions simply due to size of the regions. We presented a method to improve the color accuracy of a night navigation system by initially splitting a fused image into two distinct sections before colorization. We split a fused image into two sections, generally road and sky regions, before colorization and processed them separately to obtain improved color accuracy of each region. Using this approach, small regions were colored correctly when …

The conventional phage display technique focuses on screening peptide sequences that can bind on target substrates, however the selected peptides are not necessary to nucleate and mediate the growth of the target inorganic crystals, and in many cases they only show moderate affinity to the targets. Here we report a novel phage display approach that can directly screen peptides catalytically growing inorganic nanoparticles in aqueous solution at room temperature. In this study, the phage library is incubated with zinc precursor at room temperature. Among random peptide sequences displayed on phages, those phages that can grow zinc oxide (ZnO) …

Non-Dimensional Approach For Static Balancing Of Rotational Flexures, Ezekiel G. Merriam, Larry L. Howell Feb 2015

Non-Dimensional Approach For Static Balancing Of Rotational Flexures, Ezekiel G. Merriam, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

This work presents a nondimensional method for statically balancing flexural hinges, including those with stiffness that varies with load. Using a set of non-dimensional parameters, it is shown that one can quickly design a balancing mechanism for an idealized hinge/torsion spring system. This method is then extended to load-dependent systems, and is demonstrated with the design of a balanced cross-axis-flexural pivot with stiffness that varies as a function of compressive preload. A physical prototype is built and tested to verify the design method. The prototype demonstrates an average stiffness reduction of 87% over an 80 degree deflection range. The method …

Dissertations

Hafnium-based high-x dielectric materials have been successfully used in the industry as a key replacement for SiO2 based gate dielectrics in order to continue CMOS device scaling to the 22-nm technology node. Further scaling according to the device roadmap requires the development of oxides with higher x values in order to scale the equivalent oxide thickness (EOT) to 0.7 nm or below while achieving low defect densities. In addition, next generation devices need to meet challenges like improved channel mobility, reduced gate leakage current, good control on threshold voltage, lower interface state density, and good reliability. In order to …
