Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Rainfall In The Gandaki River Basin Of Nepal Himalaya, Jeeban Panthi, Piyush Dahal, Madan Lall Shrestha, Suman Aryal, Nir Y. Krakauer, Soni M. Pradhanang, Tarendra Lakhankar, Ajay K. Jha, Mohan Sharma, Ramchandra Karki

Publications and Research

Landslides, floods, and droughts are recurring natural disasters in Nepal related to too much or too little water. The summer monsoon contributes more than 80% of annual rainfall, and rainfall spatial and inter-annual variation is very high. The Gandaki River, one of the three major rivers of Nepal and one of the major tributaries of the Ganges River, covers all agro-ecological zones in the central part of Nepal. Time series tests were applied for different agro-ecological zones of the Gandaki River Basin (GRB) for rainfall trends of four seasons (pre-monsoon, monsoon, post-monsoon and winter) from 1981 to 2012. The non-parametric …

Frameless Representation And Manipulation Of Image Data, Henry G. Dietz Mar 2015

Frameless Representation And Manipulation Of Image Data, Henry G. Dietz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Most image sensors mimic film, integrating light during an exposure interval and then reading the "latent" image as a complete frame. In contrast, frameless image capture attempts to construct a continuous waveform for each sensel describing how the Ev (exposure value required at each pixel) changes over time. This allows great flexibility in computationally extracting frames after exposure. An overview of how this could be accomplished was presented at EI2014, with an emphasis on frameless sensor technology. In contrast, the current work centers on deriving frameless data from sequences of conventionally captured frames.

Microscale Magnetic Field Modulation For Enhanced Capture And Distribution Of Rare Circulating Tumor Cells, Peng Chen, Yu-Yen Huang, Kazunori Hoshino, John X.J Zhang

Dartmouth Scholarship

Immunomagnetic assay combines the powers of the magnetic separation and biomarker recognition and has been an effective tool to perform rare Circulating Tumor Cells detection. Key factors associated with immunomagnetic assay include the capture rate, which indicates the sensitivity of the system, and distributions of target cells after capture, which impact the cell integrity and other biological properties that are critical to downstream analyses. Here we present a theoretical framework and technical approach to implement a microscale magnetic immunoassay through modulating local magnetic field towards enhanced capture and distribution of rare cancer cells. Through the design of a two-dimensional micromagnet …

Railroad Capacity Tools And Methodologies In The U.S. And Europe, Hamed Pouryousef, Pasi Lautala, Thomas White

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

A growing demand for passenger and freight transportation, combined with limited capital to expand the United States (U.S.) rail infrastructure, is creating pressure for a more efficient use of the current line capacity. This is further exacerbated by the fact that most passenger rail services operate on corridors that are shared with freight traffic. A capacity analysis is one alternative to address the situation and there are various approaches, tools, and methodologies available for application. As the U.S. continues to develop higher speed passenger services with similar characteristics to those in European shared-use lines, understanding the common methods and tools …

Comparison Of Aircraft Tire Wear With Initial Wheel Rotational Speed, Abdurrhman A. Alroqi, Weiji Wang Mar 2015

Comparison Of Aircraft Tire Wear With Initial Wheel Rotational Speed, Abdurrhman A. Alroqi, Weiji Wang

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The impact an aircraft has on its tires when it lands has been problematic practically since the invention of the airplane. Upon touchdown, the tires frequently smoke as rubber burns off and tire material is worn away while the tires slip up to a steady rolling speed. To minimise tire slip, torque or spin mechanisms could be added to each tire assembly to accelerate the tire to match the landing speed. Patents have been registered since the 1940s to improve tire safety and performance, decrease the substantial wear that results from every landing, and save airline companies the cost of …

The Fast Solver For Calculating The High Frequency Scattered Field From The Fock Current On The Surface Of The 3-D Convex Scatterer, Yu Mao Wu, Weng Cho Chew, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Mar 2015

The Fast Solver For Calculating The High Frequency Scattered Field From The Fock Current On The Surface Of The 3-D Convex Scatterer, Yu Mao Wu, Weng Cho Chew, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we first consider the Fock current from the 3-D convex cylinder. Next, on invoking the incremental length diffraction technique (ILDC), the resultant high frequency scattered fields are expressed in terms of the Fock current. We propose the NSDP method to calculate these scattered fields. Numerical examples illustrate that the proposed NSDP method for calculating the high frequency scattered fields could achieve the frequency independent computational workload and error controllable accuracy.

Accuracy Enhancement Of The Equivalence Principle Algorithm Based On The Meshless Spherical Surface, Xin Fu, Lijun Jiang, Zuhui Ma Mar 2015

Accuracy Enhancement Of The Equivalence Principle Algorithm Based On The Meshless Spherical Surface, Xin Fu, Lijun Jiang, Zuhui Ma

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conventional equivalence principle algorithm (EPA) employs cubical boxes to support equivalence sources. However, it introduces strong discontinuities. In this work, a spherical surface is employed as the equivalence surface in EPA to avoid singularities from non-smooth surfaces. Further to achieve high order accuracy, meshless samples are used for the integrals on the spherical surface to avoid the equivalence surface mesh discretization. Theoretically the accuracy of EPA can be significantly improved, which was further benchmarked though numerical examples. Various meshless schemes are also discussed to achieve the optimal solution based on the spherical equivalence surface.

Verification Of The Dissipated Energy Based Fatigue Model Using Field Data, Thomas Redles Mar 2015

Verification Of The Dissipated Energy Based Fatigue Model Using Field Data, Thomas Redles

Theses and Dissertations

Damage can be limited to the top layer in perpetual pavements through the use of a very thick surface layer or a binder-rich intermediate layer. To achieve this goal, tensile strains at the bottom of the top hot-mix asphalt (HMA) layer must be limited to below a certain value known as the fatigue endurance limit (FEL). In this thesis, a method for estimating the allowable strain in the asphalt layers of flexible airfield pavements is proposed based on the concept that HMA fatigue failure is associated with a significant reduction in HMA layer modulus, usually taken as 50 percent. Falling …

Creating A User-Friendly Personal Wine Collection Inventory Management System, Peter Loddengaard

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

This project set out to create a user-friendly wine collection management software. Existing systems were reviewed and discussions with collectors took place to establish the user requirements for this type of inventory management system. This led to the scope of the project being narrowed to making a wine bottle entry form that was quick and easy to use. The programming language, Ruby on Rails, was used to design this system, and learning the software was a large part of the project itself. It was established that four forms would be designed using combinations of two ergonomic factors: an “F” shaped …

Nebraska’S Natural Resources Districts: An Assessment Of A Large-Scale Locally Controlled Water Governance Framework, Ann Bleed, Christina Hoffman Babbitt Mar 2015

Nebraska’S Natural Resources Districts: An Assessment Of A Large-Scale Locally Controlled Water Governance Framework, Ann Bleed, Christina Hoffman Babbitt

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

In 1972 the State of Nebraska created the Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) to consolidate a multitude of single-purpose local natural resource districts into a more comprehensive, holistic, and efficient natural resources governance system. While consolidation and efficiency was important, so was the concept of maintaining local control. Thus, Nebraska rejected the governance framework of a single top-down state agency, preferring to create NRDs that are each governed by a locally elected board. The locally elected governing boards of the NRDs were given broad authorities over many of the state’s natural resources, including groundwater. Such a governance structure was, and to …

Experimental Investigation Of Stochastic Parafoil Guidance Using A Graphics Processing Unit, Nathan Slegers, Andrew Brown, Jonathan Rogers

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Control of autonomous systems subject to stochastic uncertainty is a challenging task. In guided airdrop applications, random wind disturbances play a crucial role in determining landing accuracy and terrain avoidance. This paper describes a stochastic parafoil guidance system which couples uncertainty propagation with optimal control to protect against wind and parameter uncertainty in the presence of impact area obstacles. The algorithm uses real-time Monte Carlo simulation performed on a graphics processing unit (GPU) to evaluate robustness of candidate trajectories in terms of delivery accuracy, obstacle avoidance, and other considerations. Building upon prior theoretical developments, this paper explores performance of the …

Dense Point-Cloud Representation Of A Scene Using Monocular Vision, Yakov Diskin, Vijayan K. Asari

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction system designed to support various autonomous navigation applications. The system presented focuses on the 3-D reconstruction of a scene using only a single moving camera. Utilizing video frames captured at different points in time allows us to determine the depths of a scene. In this way, the system can be used to construct a point-cloud model of its unknown surroundings.

We present the step-by-step methodology and analysis used in developing the 3-D reconstruction technique.

We present a reconstruction framework that generates a primitive point cloud, which is computed based on feature matching and depth …

Investigation Of Electromagnetic Velocities And Negative Refraction In A Chiral Metamaterial With Second-Order Material Dispersion Using Spectral Analyses And Dispersive Models, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Tarig A. Algadey Mar 2015

Investigation Of Electromagnetic Velocities And Negative Refraction In A Chiral Metamaterial With Second-Order Material Dispersion Using Spectral Analyses And Dispersive Models, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Tarig A. Algadey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In recent years, considerable research has been carried out relative to the electromagnetic (EM) propagation and refraction characteristics in metamaterials with emphasis on the origins of negative refractive index.

Negative refractive index may be introduced in metamaterials via different methods; one such is the condition whereby the Poynting vector of the EM wave is in opposition to the group velocity in the material. Alternatively, negative refractive index also occurs when the group and phase velocities in the medium are in opposition. The latter phenomenon has been extensively investigated in the literature, including recent work involving chiral metamaterials with material dispersion …

Automatic Registration Of Fused Lidar/Digital Imagery (Texel Images) For Three-Dimensional Image Creation, Scott E. Budge, Neeraj S. Badamikar, Xuan Xie Mar 2015

Automatic Registration Of Fused Lidar/Digital Imagery (Texel Images) For Three-Dimensional Image Creation, Scott E. Budge, Neeraj S. Badamikar, Xuan Xie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Several photogrammetry-based methods have been proposed that the derive three-dimensional (3-D) information from digital images from different perspectives, and lidar-based methods have been proposed that merge lidar point clouds and texture the merged point clouds with digital imagery. Image registration alone has difficulty with smooth regions with low contrast, whereas point cloud merging alone has difficulty with outliers and a lack of proper convergence in the merging process. This paper presents a method to create 3-D images that uses the unique properties of texel images (pixel-fused lidar and digital imagery) to improve the quality and robustness of fused 3-D images. …

Coming Up With A Good Question Is Not Easy: A Proof, Joe Lorkowski, Luc Longpre, Olga Kosheleva, Salem Benferhat Mar 2015

Coming Up With A Good Question Is Not Easy: A Proof, Joe Lorkowski, Luc Longpre, Olga Kosheleva, Salem Benferhat

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Ability to ask good questions is an important part of learning skills. Coming up with a good question, a question that can really improve one's understanding of the topic, is not easy. In this paper, we prove -- on the example of probabilistic and fuzzy uncertainty -- that the problem of selecting of a good question is indeed hard.

From 1-D To 2-D Fuzzy: A Proof That Interval-Valued And Complex-Valued Are The Only Distributive Options, Christian Servin, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva Mar 2015

From 1-D To 2-D Fuzzy: A Proof That Interval-Valued And Complex-Valued Are The Only Distributive Options, Christian Servin, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

While the usual 1-D fuzzy logic has many successful applications, in some practical cases, it is desirable to come up with a more subtle way of representing expert uncertainty. A natural idea is to add additional information, i.e., to go from 1-D to 2-D (and multi-D) fuzzy logic. At present, there are two main approaches to 2-D fuzzy logic: interval-valued and complex-valued. At first glance, it may seem that many other options are potentially possible. We show, however, that, under certain reasonable conditions, interval-valued and complex-valued are the only two possible options.

Adding Possibilistic Knowledge To Probabilities Makes Many Problems Algorithmically Decidable, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Mar 2015

Adding Possibilistic Knowledge To Probabilities Makes Many Problems Algorithmically Decidable, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Many physical theories accurately predict which events are possible and which are not, or -- in situations where probabilistic (e.g., quantum) effects are important -- predict the probabilities of different possible outcomes. At first glance, it may seem that this probabilistic information is all we need. We show, however, that to adequately describe physicists' reasoning, it is important to also take into account additional knowledge -- about what is possible and what is not. We show that this knowledge can be described in terms of possibility theory, and that the presence of this knowledge makes many problems algorithmically decidable.

Why It Is Important To Precisiate Goals, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen Mar 2015

Why It Is Important To Precisiate Goals, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

After Zadeh and Bellman explained how to optimize a function under fuzzy constraints, there have been many successful applications of this optimization. However, in many practical situations, it turns out to be more efficient to precisiate the objective function before performing optimization. In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this empirical fact.
