Viability Of Bismuth As A Green Substitute For Lead In Jacketed .357 Magnum Revolver Bullets, Joel A. Jenkins
Viability Of Bismuth As A Green Substitute For Lead In Jacketed .357 Magnum Revolver Bullets, Joel A. Jenkins
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In seeking to develop environmentally friendly lead-free non-toxic bullets, the research ballistically evaluated the performance of copper-jacketed handgun bullets containing a pure bismuth core. The lead was first removed from 140 grain HornadyTM XTP® bullets of 38 caliber (.357 diameter) by melting. The empty jackets were then refilled with pure bismuth, including the forming of a correctly sized hollow-point cavity. Due to the lower density of bismuth as compared to lead, the bismuth-cored bullets consistently weighed 125 gains. Conveniently this allowed direct comparison to commercially available 125 grain HornadyTM XTP® lead-cored bullets of 38 caliber. Both bismuth-cored and …

Investigation Of Opuntia Ficus-Indica Mucilage Nanofiber Membrane Filtration For Water Systems, Rasudha Muppaneni
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This work investigates the fabrication, characterization and testing of Opuntia ficus-indica mucilage nanofibers to be utilized in water filtration systems. These mucilage nanofibers are formed using different polymers through a process called electrospinning. The polymers used to promote the formation of nanofibers are poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) and polystyrene (PS). The mucilage is a jelly like substance extracted from the pads of the cactus plant. It is a mixture of proteins, complex polysaccharides and monosaccharaides. It is an inexpensive, non-toxic, biodegradable and biocompatible material which is present in abundance. The mucilage extracted from the pads is mixed with acetic acid …
Can Passive Mobile Application Traffic Be Identified Using Machine Learning Techniques, Peter Holland
Can Passive Mobile Application Traffic Be Identified Using Machine Learning Techniques, Peter Holland
Dissertations
Mobile phone applications (apps) can generate background traffic when the end-user is not actively using the app. If this background traffic could be accurately identified, network operators could de-prioritise this traffic and free up network bandwidth for priority network traffic. The background app traffic should have IP packet features that could be utilised by a machine learning algorithm to identify app-generated (passive) traffic as opposed to user-generated (active) traffic. Previous research in the area of IP traffic classification focused on classifying high level network traffic types originating on a PC device. This research was concerned with classifying low level app …
Can Wikipedia Article Traffic Statistics Be Used To Verify A Technical Indicator? An Exploration Into The Correlation Between Wikipedia Article Traffic Statistics And The Coppock Technical Indicator., Cormac O'Connor
Dissertations
Recent studies have shown that, through the quantification of Wikipedia Usage Patterns as a result of information gathering, stock market moves can be predicted (Moat et al 2013). There was also research performed to determine the predictive nature of Wikipedia Data to predict movie box office success (Mestyan et al. 2013). The goal of any investor, in order to maximize the return of their investments, is to have an edge over other participants in the markets. Several tools and techniques have been used over the years to fulfil this, some proving to generate a consistent stream of income (Gillen 2012). …

The Sunswift Solar Car project has been running at UNSW Australia in Sydney for 20 years as of 2015. It is an entirely student-run endeavour which revolves around the design and development of a solar/electric vehicle nominally designed to compete in the World Solar Challenge rally from Darwin to Adelaide every 2 years. The student cohort is drawn from a range of schools, disciplines and backgrounds, and the team has been increasingly successful and high-profile particularly in its second decade. The excellent level of hands-on training that the project provides to students is not rewarded with academic credit yet many …
Analysis Of A Low-Angle Annular Expander Nozzle, Kyll Schomberg, John Olsen, Graham Doig
Analysis Of A Low-Angle Annular Expander Nozzle, Kyll Schomberg, John Olsen, Graham Doig
Aerospace Engineering
An experimental and numerical analysis of a low-angle annular expander nozzle is presented to observe the variance in shock structure within the flow field. A RANS-based axisymmetric numerical model was used to evaluate flow characteristics and the model validated using experimental pressure readings and schlieren images. Results were compared with an equivalent converging-diverging nozzle to determine the capability of the wake region in varying the effective area of a low-angle design. Comparison of schlieren images confirmed that shock closure occurred in the expander nozzle, prohibiting the wake region from affecting the area ratio. The findings show that a low angle …

Techniques For Aerodynamic Analysis Of Cornering Vehicles, James Keogh, Tracie J. Barber, Sammy Diasinos, Graham Doig
Aerospace Engineering
When a vehicle travels through a corner it can experience a significant change in aerodynamic performance due to the curved path of its motion. The yaw angle of the flow will vary along its length and the relative velocity of the flow will increase with distance from the central axis of its rotation. Aerodynamic analysis of vehicles in the cornering condition is an important design parameter, particularly in motorsport. Most racing-cars are designed to produce downforce that will compromise straight-line speed to allow large gains to be made in the corners. Despite the cornering condition being important, aerodynamicists are restricted …

Excessive mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) emission is a critical component in the etiology of ischemic injury. Complex I and complex III of the electron transport chain are considered the primary sources of ROS emission during cardiac ischemia and reperfusion (IR) injury. Several factors modulate ischemic ROS emission, such as an increase in extra-matrix Ca2+, a decrease in extra-matrix pH, and a change in substrate utilization. Here we examined the combined effects of these factors on ROS emission from respiratory complexes I and III under conditions of simulated IR injury. Guinea pig heart mitochondria were suspended in experimental …

Prostate cancer is detected by excess PSA in the bloodstream, a protein the prostate overproduces when tumors are present. In this paper, we designed an origami paper analytical device, specific to PSA using gold nanoparticles which provide a colorimetric, qualitative, inexpensive, disposable design to detect PSA. Our device separates the sample laterally to prevent back-mixing and vertically to enable addition of novel particles. The design was optimized for channel thickness, size, proper heating, type of paper involved, and amount of sample solution needed. We are currently concept-testing of PSA qualitative detection via sandwich assay to target detection levels < 100ng/mL.

Low Power Real-Time Video And Audio Embedded System Design For Naturalistic Bicycle Study, Janardhan Bhima Reddy Karri
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
According to NHTSA Traffic Safety Facts [9], bicyclist deaths and injuries in 2013 are recorded as 732 and 48,000, respectively. In the State of Florida the safety of bicyclists is of particular concern as the bicycle fatality rates are nearly triple the national average. Further Florida ranks #1 on bicycle fatality rate in the nation for several years. To determine the cause of near-misses and crashes, a detailed study of bicyclist behavior and environmental conditions is needed. In a Florida Department of Transport (FDOT) funded project, USF CUTR has proposed naturalistic bicycle study based on ride data collected from 100 …

The static and dynamic magnetic responses of patterned ferromagnetic thin films are uniquely altered in the case of aperiodic patterns that retain long-range order (e.g., quasicrystals). We have fabricated permalloy wire networks based on periodic square antidot lattices (ADLs) distorted according to an aperiodic Fibonacci sequence applied to two lattice translations, d1 = 1618 nm and d2 = 1000 nm. The wire segment thickness is fixed at t = 25 nm, and the width W varies from 80 to 510 nm. We measured the DC magnetization between room temperature and 5 K. Room-temperature, narrow-band (9.7 GHz) ferromagnetic resonance …

Many crop production management decisions can be informed using data from high-resolution aerial images that provide information about crop health as influenced by soil fertility and moisture. Surface soil moisture is a key component of soil water balance, which addresses water and energy exchanges at the surface/atmosphere interface; however, high-resolution remotely sensed data is rarely used to acquire soil moisture values. In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to quantify the effectiveness of using spectral images to estimate surface soil moisture. The model produces acceptable estimations of surface soil moisture (root mean square error (RMSE) = …
