Simple Linear Interpolation Explains All Usual Choices In Fuzzy Techniques: Membership Functions, T-Norms, T-Conorms, And Defuzzification, Vladik Kreinovich, Jonathan Quijas, Esthela Gallardo, Caio De Sa Lopes, Olga Kosheleva, Shahnaz Shahbazova Mar 2015

Simple Linear Interpolation Explains All Usual Choices In Fuzzy Techniques: Membership Functions, T-Norms, T-Conorms, And Defuzzification, Vladik Kreinovich, Jonathan Quijas, Esthela Gallardo, Caio De Sa Lopes, Olga Kosheleva, Shahnaz Shahbazova

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Most applications of fuzzy techniques use piece-wise linear (triangular or trapezoid) membership functions, min or product t-norms, max or algebraic sum t-conorms, and centroid defuzzification. Similarly, most applications of interval-valued fuzzy techniques use piecewise-linear lower and upper membership functions. In this paper, we show that all these choices can be explained as applications of simple linear interpolation.

Synchrophasor Sensing And Processing Based Smart Grid Security Assessment For Renewable Energy Integration, Huaiguang Jiang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the evolution of energy and power systems, the emerging Smart Grid (SG) is mainly featured by distributed renewable energy generations, demand-response control and huge amount of heterogeneous data sources. Widely distributed synchrophasor sensors, such as phasor measurement units (PMUs) and fault disturbance recorders (FDRs), can record multi-modal signals, for power system situational awareness and renewable energy integration.

An effective and economical approach is proposed for wide-area security assessment. This approach is based on wavelet analysis for detecting and locating the short-term and long-term faults in SG, using voltage signals collected by distributed synchrophasor sensors.

A data-driven approach for fault …

Frito-Lay - Supply Chain Impact Analysis, Kerri Blosch, Vincent Phua, Jeffrey Silva

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

The snack food company Frito-Lay relies on Route Sales Representatives (RSRs) to stock and maintain shelves of snack foods in every store. Frito-Lay currently does not have a system which can accurately predict cannibalization, or the effects of a store opening or closing on other stores of the same chain in the area. The goal is to sort through 1900 stores in a given metropolitan area to see the effects of cannibalization. In order to tackle the problem, a Microsoft Access program was created to filter stores based on location or whether the store was open for the full three-year …

Explosive-Driven Shock Wave And Vortex Ring Interaction With A Propane Flame, P. Giannuzzi, M. J. Hargather, Graham Doig

Aerospace Engineering

Experiments were performed to analyze the interaction of an explosively driven shock wave and a propane flame. A 30 g explosive charge was detonated at one end of a 3-m-long, 0.6-m-diameter shock tube to produce a shock wave which propagated into the atmosphere. A propane flame source was positioned at various locations outside of the shock tube to investigate the effect of different strength shock waves. High-speed retroreflective shadowgraph imaging visualized the shock wave motion and flame response, while a synchronized color camera imaged the flame directly. The explosively driven shock tube was shown to produce a repeatable shock wave …

Liquefaction Potential Of Recent Fills Versus Natural Sands Located In High-Seismicity Regions Using Shear-Wave Velocity, R. Dobry, T. Abdoun, K.H. Stokoe Ii., R. E.S. Moss, M. Hatton, H. El Ganainy

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The liquefaction potential of clean and silty sands is examined on the basis of the field measurement of the shear-wave velocity, Vs. The starting point is the database of 225 case histories supporting the Andrus-Stokoe Vs-based liquefaction chart for sands, silts, and gravels. Only clean and silty sands with nonplastic fines are considered, resulting in a reduced database of 110 case histories, which are plotted separately by type of deposit. A line of constant cyclic shear strain, γcl≈0.03%, is recommended for liquefaction evaluation of recent uncompacted clean and silty sand fills and earthquake magnitude, Mw=7.5. The geologically recent natural silty …

Two different groups of Ossabaw miniature pigs were fed a high fat atherogenic diet for 4 months (Group I) and 12 months (Group II), respectively. Group I (6 pigs) underwent contrast enhanced computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) at baseline and after …

Moor Movement: Automated Docking On Drought-Stricken Reservoirs, Daniel Beck Mar 2015

Moor Movement: Automated Docking On Drought-Stricken Reservoirs, Daniel Beck

Landscape Architecture

Moor Movement establishes a mechanized docking system for unpredictable shoreline fluctuations on inland lakes and reservoirs. Due to climate change and warmer global temperatures, the threat of ocean level rise has initiated massive proposals to address the interface between ocean and man-made infrastructure. While this is a monumental problem, ocean level rise is not the only immediate threat. The recently declared emergency drought conditions in California are finally bringing attention to inland lakes and reservoirs. While ocean levels might rise 2-7 feet in 100 years, a lake could drop 100 feet in 5 years. What happens to access roads, marinas, …

Fail-Safe Test Generation Of Safety Critical Systems, Salwa Elakeili Mar 2015

Fail-Safe Test Generation Of Safety Critical Systems, Salwa Elakeili

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation introduces a technique for testing proper failure mitigation in safety critical systems. Unlike other approaches which integrate behavioral and failure models, and then generate tests from the integrated model, we build safety mitigation tests from an existing behavioral test suite, using an explicit mitigation model for which we generate mitigation paths which are then woven at selected failure points into the original test suite to create failure-mitigation tests (safety mitigation test).

Impacts Of Replacing A Tight Diamond Interchange With A Spui – A Wilsonville Interchange Study, Sina Vadaei

Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports

Tight diamond interchanges (TDI) and single point urban interchanges (SPUIs) are generally types of interchanges that can be used interchangeably in areas where right-of-way is constrained. There are limited amount of research conducted regarding the operational analysis and comparison of these two interchanges. The research that has been done regarding this topic are outdated and generally conclude that SPUIs perform better or about the same. Without knowing the true performances of the two interchange designs, it would make it difficult for engineers and planners to choose between the two interchanges.

This research study will use the current updated version of …

Microgrid Optimal Scheduling Considering Impact Of High Penetration Wind Generation, Abdulaziz Furreh Alanazi Mar 2015

Microgrid Optimal Scheduling Considering Impact Of High Penetration Wind Generation, Abdulaziz Furreh Alanazi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to study the impact of high penetration wind energy in economic and reliable operation of microgrids. Wind power is variable, i.e., constantly changing, and nondispatchable, i.e., cannot be controlled by the microgrid controller. Thus an accurate forecasting of wind power is an essential task in order to study its impacts in microgrid operation. Two commonly used forecasting methods including Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) have been used in this thesis to improve the wind power forecasting. The forecasting error is calculated using a Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and …

Solar And Conservative Energy, Md Zahidur Rahman, Jonathan Anspike Mar 2015

Solar And Conservative Energy, Md Zahidur Rahman, Jonathan Anspike

Publications and Research

In the solar power and conservative energy, our basic mission was to build things that don’t use any sort of fuel that harms the environment. One of the most well-liked ways of conserving energy is using solar panels. Solar panels capture light, and transforms that light into electrical. The first objective in this research was to build an electric car that uses solar panels. To do so we connected a solar panel to a motor which rotates a series of gears that turns the wheels. We used a lot of sunlight though to power the motor enough were the gears …

Detecting And Tracking Moving Objects From A Small Unmanned Air Vehicle, Patrick Defranco Mar 2015

Detecting And Tracking Moving Objects From A Small Unmanned Air Vehicle, Patrick Defranco

Theses and Dissertations

As the market for unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) rapidly expands, the need for algorithmsthat improve the capabilities of those vehicles is also growing. One valuable capability for UAVsis that of persistent tracking—the ability to find and track another moving object, usually on theground, from an aerial platform. This thesis presents a method for tracking multiple ground targetsfrom an airborne camera. Moving objects on the ground are detected by using frame-to-frameregistration. The detected objects are then tracked using the newly developed recursive RANSACalgorithm. Much video tracking work has focused on using appearance-based processing for tracking, with some approaches using dynamic trackers such …

Vision Based Multiple Target Tracking Using Recursive Ransac, Kyle Ingersoll Mar 2015

Vision Based Multiple Target Tracking Using Recursive Ransac, Kyle Ingersoll

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the Recursive-Random Sample Consensus (R-RANSAC) multiple target tracking (MTT) algorithm is further developed and applied to video taken from static platforms. Development of R-RANSAC is primarily focused in three areas: data association, the ability to track maneuvering objects, and track management. The probabilistic data association (PDA) filter performs very well in the R-RANSAC framework and adds minimal computation cost over less sophisticated methods. The interacting multiple models (IMM) filter as well as higher-order linear models are incorporated into R-RANSAC to improve tracking of highly maneuverable targets. An effective track labeling system, a more intuitive track merging criteria, …

Investigation Of Laboratory Test Procedures For Assessing The Structural Capacity Of Geogrid-Reinforced Aggregate Base Materials, Jaren Tolman Knighton Mar 2015

Investigation Of Laboratory Test Procedures For Assessing The Structural Capacity Of Geogrid-Reinforced Aggregate Base Materials, Jaren Tolman Knighton

Theses and Dissertations

The modulus of aggregate base layers in pavement structures can potentially be increased through the use of geogrid. However, methods for determining how much structural benefit can be expected from a given geogrid product have not been standardized. A laboratory testing protocol is therefore needed to enable evaluation, in terms of modulus or California bearing ratio (CBR), for example, of the degree of improvement that may be achieved by a given geogrid. Consequently, the objective of this research was to identify a laboratory test method that can be used to quantify improvements in structural capacity of aggregate base materials reinforced …

Highway Rail Crossing Prioritization, Bryan Gibson, Reginald R. Souleyrette

Kentucky Transportation Center Technical Assistance Report

Research team members at the University of Kentucky in the Department of Civil Engineering and the Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) worked with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) to develop a high-level mechanism for ranking highway-rail crossings for reconstruction and/or rehabilitation. The Highway Rail Crossing Prioritization implementation study yielded the Rail Crossing Improvement Priority (RCIP), which combined qualitative measures of crossing conditions with quantitative measures including proposed project costs and a valuation of the crossing based on rail and truck traffic. This effort provides a template by which further development can yield prioritization procedures for road-rail grade separation projects.
