Electric Vehicle Sales For 2014 And Future Projections, Florida Solar Energy Center, David L. Block Apr 2015

Electric Vehicle Sales For 2014 And Future Projections, Florida Solar Energy Center, David L. Block

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The object of this research is to assess the current status and to predict the future penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) within the U.S. market. The prediction method is based on EV yearly sales giving the cumulative vehicles on the road for 2010 through 2014 and the growth rates for these five years. Using these growth values, the future ten year values are calculated. The EV sales results for 2014 in the U.S. show that 118,773 vehicles were sold as compared to 96,700 vehicles in 2013. This gives a one year sales growth rate of 23%. The total cumulative number …

Volume Component Analysis For Classification Of Lidar Data, Nina M. Varney, Vijayan K. Asari

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

One of the most difficult challenges of working with LiDAR data is the large amount of data points that are produced. Analysing these large data sets is an extremely time consuming process. For this reason, automatic perception of LiDAR scenes is a growing area of research. Currently, most LiDAR feature extraction relies on geometrical features specific to the point cloud of interest. These geometrical features are scene-specific, and often rely on the scale and orientation of the object for classification. This paper proposes a robust method for reduced dimensionality feature extraction of 3D objects using a volume component analysis (VCA) …

Density Functional Theory Simulations Of Mofs Encapsulated-Catalyzed Systems, Jiazhou Zhu, Rachel B. Getman Apr 2015

Density Functional Theory Simulations Of Mofs Encapsulated-Catalyzed Systems, Jiazhou Zhu, Rachel B. Getman

Chemical and Biomolecular Graduate Research Symposium

The research is mainly on Computational Design of Highly Selective Transition Metal Catalysts Encapsulated by Metal-‐Organic Frameworks for Butane Oxidation to 1-‐Butanol. Metal Organic Framework (MOF) grown over a heterogeneous catalyst. Pores of framework allow only certain molecules of correct size, orientation, or chemical properties to access catalyst. The framework will force molecule into desired orientation where only the terminal atoms will “see” the catalyst. In our simulation we would like to use the helium ring to simulate the MOFs pores, since He is inert and exhibits the no chemical reactivity. The reaction we are looking into is butane oxidation …

Fluids Dynamics & Heat Transfer Lab Design, Bruce Gerry

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

This project consists of the designing, building, and creation of instruction manuals for several labs in fluids and heat transfer fields. Labs for these fields tend to be large and hard to simulate as physical models. This project will solve that problem by creating simulations: in solidworks. Not only will simulations in solidworks make some concepts possible to demonstrate but, it will also expose students to useful software that will be used in the workforce.

How To Estimate Expected Shortfall When Probabilities Are Known With Interval Or Fuzzy Uncertainty, Christian Servin, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2015

How To Estimate Expected Shortfall When Probabilities Are Known With Interval Or Fuzzy Uncertainty, Christian Servin, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To gauge the risk corresponding to a possible disaster, it is important to know both the probability of this disaster and the expected damage caused by such potential disaster ("expected shortfall"). Both these measures of risk are easy to estimate in the ideal case, when we know the exact probabilities of different disaster strengths. In practice, however, we usually only have a partial information about these probabilities: we may have an interval (or, more generally, fuzzy) uncertainty about these probabilities. In this paper, we show how to efficiently estimate the expected shortfall under such interval and/or fuzzy uncertainty.

Which Bio-Diversity Indices Are Most Adequate, Olga Kosheleva, Craig Tweedie, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2015

Which Bio-Diversity Indices Are Most Adequate, Olga Kosheleva, Craig Tweedie, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the main objectives of ecology is to analyze, maintain, and enhance the bio-diversity of different ecosystems. To be able to do that, we need to gauge bio-diversity. Several semi-heuristic diversity indices have been shown to be in good accordance with the intuitive notion of bio-diversity. In this paper, we provide a theoretical justification for these empirically successful techniques. Specifically, we show that the most widely used techniques -- Simpson index -- can be justified by using simple fuzzy rules, while a more elaborate justification explains all empirically successful diversity indices.

Symbolic Aggregate Approximation (Sax) Under Interval Uncertainty, Chrysostomos D. Stylios, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2015

Symbolic Aggregate Approximation (Sax) Under Interval Uncertainty, Chrysostomos D. Stylios, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we monitor a system by continuously measuring the corresponding quantities, to make sure that an abnormal deviation is detected as early as possible. Often, we do not have ready algorithms to detect abnormality, so we need to use machine learning techniques. For these techniques to be efficient, we first need to compress the data. One of the most successful methods of data compression is the technique of Symbolic Aggregate approXimation (SAX). While this technique is motivated by measurement uncertainty, it does not explicitly take this uncertainty into account. In this paper, we show that we can …

Seismic In-Plane Response Of Reinforced Concrete Frames With Masonry Infill Walls, Rabab Abdel Karim Al Louzi Apr 2015

Seismic In-Plane Response Of Reinforced Concrete Frames With Masonry Infill Walls, Rabab Abdel Karim Al Louzi

Open Access Dissertations

Field data gathered after destructive earthquakes indicate that infill walls interact with reinforced concrete (RC) frames in buildings during an earthquake and could cause failure mechanism different than what the frames are originally designed for. A new method to identify the failure modes of RC frames with infill walls is developed. The method requires only the simple geometric and material properties of the elements involved in the frame- wall assembly. The approach checks various possible failure mechanisms, including those that may evolve depending on how the infill wall may fail during strong shaking, for example, the dynamically evolved captive column …

Near-Congruent Solidification Of Castings, Kevin J Chaput Apr 2015

Near-Congruent Solidification Of Castings, Kevin J Chaput

Open Access Dissertations

A study on the microstructure development of as-cast Cu-Mn alloys based around the congruent minimum at 34.6 wt % Mn and 873 °C was performed. Initially, this was to evaluate the alloy as an alternative to wide freezing range Pb and Sn bronzes that are plagued with porosity. The shallow minimum and associated narrow freezing ranges around the congruent point result in a completely cellular (non-dendritic) solidification morphology for a composition range ~3 wt % Mn about the congruent composition (C c). The degree of cellular solidification was found to depend on the mold material. Increased mold conductivity lead …

Investigations Of Carbon Nanotube Catalyst Morphology And Behavior With Transmission Electron Microscopy, Sammy M. Saber Apr 2015

Investigations Of Carbon Nanotube Catalyst Morphology And Behavior With Transmission Electron Microscopy, Sammy M. Saber

Open Access Dissertations

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are materials with significant potential applications due to their desirable mechanical and electronic properties, which can both vary based on their structure. Electronic applications for CNTs are still few and not widely available, mainly due to the difficulty in the control of fabrication. Carbon nanotubes are grown in batches, but despite many years of research from their first discovery in 1991, there are still many unanswered questions regarding how to control the structure of CNTs. This work attempts to bridge some of the gap between question and answer by focusing on the catalyst particle used in common …

Magnetic Manipulation And Multimodal Imaging For Single Cell Direct Mechanosensing, Robert L. Wilson Apr 2015

Magnetic Manipulation And Multimodal Imaging For Single Cell Direct Mechanosensing, Robert L. Wilson

Open Access Theses

The study of internal mechanics of single cells is paramount to understand mechanisms of mechanoregulation. External loading and cell-mediated force generation result in changes in cell shape, rheology, and the deformation of subcellular structures such as the nucleus. Moreover, alterations in the processes that regulate these responses have been further correlated to specific pathologies. Cellular deformation is often studied through application of forces in the environment of the cell, relying on strain and stress transfer through focal adhesions and the cytoskeletal system. However, the transfer of these external forces to internal mechanics can introduce uncertainties in the interpretation of subcellular …

Consolidation-Induced Solute Transport For Constant Rate Of Strain. Ii: Comparison With Incremental Loading, Patrick J. Fox, Hefu Pu Apr 2015

Consolidation-Induced Solute Transport For Constant Rate Of Strain. Ii: Comparison With Incremental Loading, Patrick J. Fox, Hefu Pu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a numerical investigation of one-dimensional large strain consolidation-induced solute transport for incremental loading (IL) and constant rate of strain (CRS) conditions. Solute transport accounts for advection, diffusion, dispersion, linear and nonlinear sorption, and equilibrium and nonequilibrium sorption, and is consistent with temporal and spatial variations of porosity and seepage velocity in the consolidating soil. Simulations were conducted using material properties for kaolinite clay and indicate that IL and CRS conditions produce significantly different responses during the course of consolidation, including applied stress, rate of settlement, excess pore pressure, and local strain. However, for a given set of …

Various three dimensional (3D) measuring or capturing devices are introduced to the society recently, and there are abundant possibilities that we can take advantage of this new technology. In this research, we worked on one useful application: to correct the distortion due to the curved shape of the pages of an open book in captured images using of depth information. This work is relevant to camera-based capture devices that can use a projector to cast structured light patterns to provide depth information. In order to improve the visual quality of captured documents, we established our algorithm from two perspectives. First, …

Architectural Techniques To Extend Multi-Core Performance Scaling, Hamza Bin Sohail Apr 2015

Architectural Techniques To Extend Multi-Core Performance Scaling, Hamza Bin Sohail

Open Access Dissertations

Multi-cores have successfully delivered performance improvements over the past decade; however, they now face problems on two fronts: power and off-chip memory bandwidth. Dennard's scaling is effectively coming to an end which has lead to a gradual increase in chip power dissipation. In addition, sustaining off-chip memory bandwidth has become harder due to the limited space for pins on the die and greater current needed to drive the increasing load . My thesis focuses on techniques to address the power and off-chip memory bandwidth challenges in order to avoid the premature end of the multi-core era. ^ In the first …
