Parameter Estimation For Towed Cable Systems Using Moving Horizon Estimation, Liang Sun, Jeremy Castagno, John Hedengren, Randall Beard

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a strategy for optimal estimation of parameters for towed cable systems using moving horizon estimation (MHE). The main contributions of the work include a novel formulation of MHE using a dead-band that explicitly rejects measurement noise, real-time implementation results, and the investigation of time-varying stochastic disturbances as well as unknown yet constant disturbances. Further analysis is conducted on the observability and sensitivity of key parameters to determine which parameters can be estimated by the proposed approach using real-time streaming data from experiments. In addition to the real-time results, an offline multiobjective optimization is conducted to reveal the …

Load Bearing Clip Angle Design, American Iron And Steel Institute Apr 2015

Load Bearing Clip Angle Design, American Iron And Steel Institute

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)

The report presents a comprehensive research project aimed at developing design methods for three limit states of cold-formed steel clip angles: shear, compression, and pull-over of the screw connections. For each limit state, a test program was conducted to investigate the behavior, strength, and deflection of the clip angles. The test results were compared with existing design methods for members similar to, but not exactly the same as, cold-formed steel clip angles. It was found that none of the existing methods worked well for the tested clip angles, therefore new design methods were developed for each of the three limit …

Gaussian Weighted Neighborhood Connectivity Of Nonlinear Line Attractor For Learning Complex Manifolds, Theus H. Aspiras, Vijayan K. Asari, Wesam Sakla

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The human brain has the capability to process high quantities of data quickly for detection and recognition tasks. These tasks are made simpler by the understanding of data, which intentionally removes redundancies found in higher dimensional data and maps the data onto a lower dimensional space. The brain then encodes manifolds created in these spaces, which reveal a specific state of the system. We propose to use a recurrent neural network, the nonlinear line attractor (NLA) network, for the encoding of these manifolds as specific states, which will draw untrained data towards one of the specific states that the NLA …

Various sounds will be generated using Mathematical programming; the types of sound will include single frequency, wide band and narrow band noises. Microphones …

Organic Solar Cell At Room Temperature, Deedra Zeeh Apr 2015

Organic Solar Cell At Room Temperature, Deedra Zeeh

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Organic electronics have become of great interest in the field of materials science research due to the potential for flexible electronic devices and low cost technologies. Difficulties emerge with creating a stable and efficient device, while still maintaining a simple and room-temperature production process.

With the advent of relatively stable organic semiconductors and graphene (or other nanotube or fullerene morphologies), it is possible to fabricate photovoltaic cells at near room temperature. By stacking these cells, devices of reasonable efficiencies >5% can be fabricated. Devices were created with a perylene-P3HT photoactive layer, polyaniline buffer layer, and PEDOT:PSS as the hole transport …

Analog Filter Design System Using Mathematica And System Modeler, Tatjana Samardzic

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Analog filters are an essential part of modern electronics; however, their design, realization and verification can be arduous and time consuming. This project describes a Mathematica and SystemModeler platform for automated, fast analog filter design and simulation. The platform consists of two key components: I.SystemModeler library of first and second order low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and band-stop filters based on some of the most popular filter topologies: Sallen-Key, Tow-Thomas, State Variable, Multiple Feedback, Bainter and Boctor circuits and II.Mathematica package based on Butterworth, Chebyshev and elliptic frequency response approximations and different filter topologies.

Mechanism And Kinetics Of Homogeneous Catalysis, Silei Xiong Apr 2015

Mechanism And Kinetics Of Homogeneous Catalysis, Silei Xiong

Open Access Dissertations

A model-based approach using a diverse set of data including monomer consumption, evolution of molecular weight, and end-group analysis was employed to determine each of the reaction specific rate constants involved in 1-hexene polymerization process catalyzed by a family of group IV single-site catalysts. The primary set of elementary reaction steps included initiation, normal propagation, misinsertion, recovery from misinsertion, monomer independent and dependent chain transfer. Robust determination of kinetic constants and reaction mechanisms for a series of Group IV amine bis-phenolate complexes led to the development of several structure−activity relationships.^ For some of the catalysts of the bis-phenolate family the …

Control Oriented Concentrating Solar Power (Csp) Plant Model And Its Applications, Qi Luo Apr 2015

Control Oriented Concentrating Solar Power (Csp) Plant Model And Its Applications, Qi Luo

Open Access Dissertations

Solar receivers in concentrating solar thermal power plants (CSP) undergo over 10,000 start-ups and shutdowns, and over 25,000 rapid rate of change in temperature on receivers due to cloud transients resulting in performance degradation and material fatigue in their expected lifetime of over 30 years. The research proposes to develop a three-level controller that uses multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) control technology to minimize the effect of these disturbances, improve plant performance, and extend plant life. The controller can be readily installed on any vendor supplied state-of-the-art control hardware.^ We propose a three-level controller architecture using multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) control for CSP plants that …

Alternative Sample Loading Preparation For Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry, Scott M. Husson, Brian Powell, Glenn Fugate, David Locklair, Joseph Mannion

Chemical and Biomolecular Graduate Research Symposium

This contribution describes a new sample loading method for Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS), which is used in nuclear safeguards and non-proliferation efforts worldwide and is known as the “gold standard” in isotopic ratio measurements of plutonium. TIMS analysis is used to determine grades of nuclear material and the extent of enrichment at production sites. The current sample loading method for TIMS analysis is known as “bead-loading”. While it provides the lowest detection limit of any known method for plutonium analysis, bead-loading is a difficult, time consuming, and expensive method that results in up to 20% sample loss. The major …

Micro‐Textured Boron Nitride Nanoplatelet Modified Polyethylene Films, Ozgun Ozdemir, Amod A. Ogale Apr 2015

Micro‐Textured Boron Nitride Nanoplatelet Modified Polyethylene Films, Ozgun Ozdemir, Amod A. Ogale

Chemical and Biomolecular Graduate Research Symposium

Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) micro‐textured films filled with boron nitride nanoplatelets (BNN) were produced by continuous melt extrusion. Nanoparticles displayed a significant extent of dispersion inside the matrix. The addition of BNN led to more than 10‐fold increase of the in‐plane thermal conductivity (TC) of the nanocomposite (7.7 W/m.K vs 0.3 W/m.K for pure LLDPE), and 1.3‐fold increase of through thickness TC. To increase the surface area available for convective heat transfer, micro‐textured films (T‐BNN) were produced from a micro‐patterned die. Nanoplatelets were aligned parallel to the film machine direction. Film stiffness and tensile strength are comparable to the …

Effect Of Co Adsorption And Coverage On Ethanol Production From Syngas, Anuradha Gundamaraju, Ming He, David A. Bruce

Chemical and Biomolecular Graduate Research Symposium

Concern over ever decreasing oil supplies, increasing levels of pollution and energy independence have been the primary driving forces behind significant efforts focused on the development of new technologies capable of increasing the production of alternative fuels. To-date, ethanol and to a lesser extent biodiesel have been the only alternative fuels or fuel additives to gain widespread use and be synthesized on a commercial scale. Currently, most of the World’s ethanol is produced from renewable biomass. The biomass feedstocks and fermentation broths used in ethanol production contain high amounts of water, and therefore, the energy efficiency of the process is …
