Development Of Anti-Fouling, Anti-Microbial Membranes By Chemical Patterning, Steven Weinman, Na Li, Viatcheslav Freger, Moshe Herzberg, Scott Husson
Chemical and Biomolecular Graduate Research Symposium
Over 1 billion people lack access to clean drinking water. Membranes are a tool that can help provide clean water to these people. However, treatment of impaired waters for beneficial use exposes the membranes to feed waters containing biological and abiotic species, which leads to fouling and loss of membrane productivity over time. Since reduction in flux due to fouling is one of the largest costs associated with membrane processes in water treatment, new coatings that limit fouling would have significant economic and societal impacts. Developing these advanced coatings is the focus of our work.

Dendrimer-Guest Interactions: Challenging Conventional Wisdom, Ryan S. Defever, Sapna Sarupria
Chemical and Biomolecular Graduate Research Symposium
Solutions to many future challenges - including water purification, drug delivery, and energy storage - will require innovative new materials. Dendrimers are a class of materials with wide-ranging applications whose behavior is not fully understood. In many potential applications, dendrimers interact with small molecules. Our work focuses on describing the fundamental mechanisms governing the interactions between dendrimers and hydrocarbons using molecular modeling and computer simulations. A common view of dendrimer host-guest interactions is that the guest molecules are encapsulated in protected interior voids within the dendrimer structure. Our results present an alternative picture and show that the association of a …

A Systematic Review Of The Critical Factors For Success Of Mobile Learning In Higher Education (University Students' Perspective), Muasaad Alrasheedi, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Arif Raza
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
The phenomenon of the use of a mobile learning (m-Learning) platform in educational institutions is slowly gaining momentum. However, the enthusiasm with which mobile phones have been welcomed into every aspect of our lives is not yet apparent in the educational sector. To understand the reason, it is important to understand user expectations of the system. This article documents a systematic review of existing studies to find the success factors for effective m-Learning. Our systematic review collates results from 30 studies conducted in 17 countries, where 13 critical success factors were found to strongly impact m-Learning implementation. Using these results …
Consolidation-Induced Solute Transport For Constant Rate Of Strain. I: Model Development And Simulation Results, Hefu Pu, Patrick J. Fox
Consolidation-Induced Solute Transport For Constant Rate Of Strain. I: Model Development And Simulation Results, Hefu Pu, Patrick J. Fox
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A numerical model, called CSTCRS1, is presented for coupled one-dimensional consolidation and solute transport under constant rate of strain (CRS) loading conditions. The consolidation algorithm accounts for vertical strain, general constitutive relationships, relative fluid velocity, changing compressibility and hydraulic conductivity during consolidation, and an external hydraulic gradient. The solute transport algorithm accounts for advection, dispersion, linear and nonlinear sorption, and equilibrium and nonequilibrium sorption. Soil compressibility is rate-independent and as such CSTCRS1 is more appropriate for less-structured soils. The model is based on a dual-Lagrangian framework that separately tracks the motions of sold and fluid phases. The development of CSTCRS1 …

Should Nuclear Energy Be More Heavily Incorporated By The United States?, Matthew Romer
Should Nuclear Energy Be More Heavily Incorporated By The United States?, Matthew Romer
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
America is involved in one of the biggest races towards electrical efficiency, cleanliness, and productivity. Nuclear energy is a major part of the U.S.’s non-‐carbon emitting electricity, and has strict regulations for management. However, this form of energy has been on the decline in the past couple decades due to cost and competition with cheaper, less clean methods. Is nuclear energy feasible enough to continue?
Bayesian Global Optimization Approach To The Oil Well Placement Problem With Quantified Uncertainties, Zengyi Dou
Bayesian Global Optimization Approach To The Oil Well Placement Problem With Quantified Uncertainties, Zengyi Dou
Open Access Theses
The oil well placement problem is vital part of secondary oil production. Since the calculation of the net present value (NPV) of an investment depends on the solution of expensive partial differential equations that require tremendous computational resources, traditional methods are doomed to fail. The problem becomes exceedingly more difficult when we take into account the uncertainties in the oil price as well as in the ground permeability. In this study, we formulate the oil well placement problem as a global optimization problem that depends on the output of a finite volume solver for the two-phase immiscible flow (water-oil). Then, …
The Effect Of Maximum Aggregate Size On The Shear Strength Of Geometrically Scaled Reinforced Concrete Beams, Derek Robert Daluga
The Effect Of Maximum Aggregate Size On The Shear Strength Of Geometrically Scaled Reinforced Concrete Beams, Derek Robert Daluga
Open Access Theses
Shear strength of reinforced concrete beams without web reinforcement has been reported to decrease with increases in depth. This is often referred to as a size effect. This reduction in shear strength has been reported to decrease with the use of web reinforcement and increases in maximum aggregate size. ^ The purpose of this study was to test two hypotheses 1) shear strength increases with increases in maximum aggregate size and 2) aggregate gradation affects this increase in shear strength. Maximum aggregate size is defined here as the size of the smallest sieve opening through which all aggregate particles pass. …

Overcoming Fundamental Barriers In Photovoltaic And Terahertz Generation, Chao Zhou
Overcoming Fundamental Barriers In Photovoltaic And Terahertz Generation, Chao Zhou
Open Access Theses
Several fundamental barriers limit the performance of opto-electronic conversion processes below 100%. Two specific examples of current technological interest include photovoltaic conversion of sunlight into electricity (i.e., solar cells), and terahertz generation from optical sources. In particular, solar cells are limited not only by the Carnot limit associated with the second law (approximately 86% at room temperature), but also by radiative recombination, non-reciprocity, carrier thermalization, and sub-bandgap losses. In the case of terahertz generation, the typical process of difference frequency generation relies on two input optical waves with only a small difference between them to generate the desired output; however, …
Comparison Of Sutures And Devices Used In Closure Following Partial Nephrectomy Suturing, Bikal Paka
Comparison Of Sutures And Devices Used In Closure Following Partial Nephrectomy Suturing, Bikal Paka
Masters Theses
Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) is an effective surgical procedure to remove a small renal tumor, while preserving the remainder of the kidney. However, it is a technically challenging procedure to maintain hemostatic condition on the kidney during LPN suturing. Three different experiments were conducted to explore the characteristics and limitations of the current mechanism for tissue approximation during LPN procedures.
During the first experiment, a standard suture anchor Hem-o-lok device, a standard stop knot, and three prototype devices were compared to each other based on the amount of tension that could be placed on a suture before there was a …

Model Reduction: Why It Is Possible And How It Can Potentially Help To Control Swarms Of Unmanned Arial Vehicles (Uavs), Martine Ceberio, Leobardo Valera, Olga Kosheleva, Rodrigo A. Romero
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many application areas, such as meteorology, traffic control, etc., it is desirable to employ swarms of Unmanned Arial Vehicles (UAVs) to provide us with a good picture of the changing situation and thus, to help us make better predictions (and make better decisions based on these predictions). To avoid duplication, interference, and collisions, UAVs must coordinate their trajectories. As a result, the optimal control of each of these UAVs should depend on the positions and velocities of all others -- which makes the corresponding control problem very complicated. Since, in contrast to controlling a single UAV, the resulting problem …
Optimizing Cloud Use Under Interval Uncertainty, Vladik Kreinovich, Esthela Gallardo
Optimizing Cloud Use Under Interval Uncertainty, Vladik Kreinovich, Esthela Gallardo
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
One of the main advantages of cloud computing is that it helps the users to save money: instead of buying a lot of computers to cover all their computations, the user can rent the computation time on the cloud to cover the rare peak spikes of computer need. From this viewpoint, it is important to find the optimal division between in-house and in-the-cloud computations. In this paper, we solve this optimization problem, both in the idealized case when we know the complete information about the costs and the user's need, and in a more realistic situation, when we only know …
Synthesis And Characterization Of A Lubricin Mimic (Mlub) To Reduce Friction On The Articular Cartilage Surface, Alexandra May Lawrence
Synthesis And Characterization Of A Lubricin Mimic (Mlub) To Reduce Friction On The Articular Cartilage Surface, Alexandra May Lawrence
Open Access Theses
The lubricating proteoglycan, lubricin, facilitates the remarkable low friction and wear properties of articular cartilage in the synovial joints of the body. Lubricin lines the joint surfaces and plays a protective role as a boundary lubricant in sliding contact; down-regulation of lubricin is associated with cartilage degradation and the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis. An unmet need for early osteoarthritis treatment is the development of therapeutic molecules that mimic lubricin function and yet are also resistant to enzymatic degradation common in the damaged joint. Here, we engineered a lubricin mimic (mLub) that resists enzymatic degradation and binds to the articular surface to …
Optimizing Electrode Thickness And Material For Laser-Induced Electrothermal Flow, Jian Wei Khor
Optimizing Electrode Thickness And Material For Laser-Induced Electrothermal Flow, Jian Wei Khor
Open Access Theses
In this article, the material dependence of electrothermal flow is studied to optimize an optoelectric particle manipulation technique called Rapid Electrokinetic Patterning (REP). REP utilizes a heat source to produce temperature gradients, which, in this study, are induced by the application of a 1064 nm cw laser. The simultaneous application of an uniform AC electric field assemble colloids on the surface of an electrode that can be moved by translating the laser. The temperature gradients produced from the heat source are crucial in REP as the higher the temperature gradient the faster the electrothermal flow. Thus, optimization of temperature gradients …

The purpose of this research was to develop a method for detecting premature failure in a v-belt using capacitance and resistance readings. Another goal of the research was to detect tension values on the belt using the same readings. Materials of current belts and possible materials for a prototype belt were tested. Materials were chosen, and prototype belts were built. Pulley system configurations were developed and built. Sections of the belt designs were tested for capacitance and resistance before and after various methods of damage. Capacitance was chosen as the better sensing method. Certain layered belt configurations and sheave configurations …

Thermodynamics And Kinetics Of Dna Nanotube Polymerization From Single-Filament Measurements, Rizal F. Hariadi, Bernard Yurke, Erik Winfree
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
DNA nanotubes provide a programmable architecture for molecular self-assembly and can serve as model systems for one-dimensional biomolecular assemblies. While a variety of DNA nanotubes have been synthesized and employed as models for natural biopolymers, an extensive investigation of DNA nanotube kinetics and thermodynamics has been lacking. Using total internal reflection microscopy, DNA nanotube polymerization was monitored in real time at the single filament level over a wide range of free monomer concentrations and temperatures. The measured polymerization rates were subjected to a global nonlinear fit based on polymerization theory in order to simultaneously extract kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. For …
