A New Approach For Efficient Analysis Of Large Finite Periodic Structures, Xiaoyan Y.Z. Xiong, Ling Ling Meng, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha, Fan Yang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Periodic structures have attracted much attention in the past decades due to numerous applications such as metamaterials, antenna arrays, frequency selective surface (FSS), photonic band gap (PBG) or electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structures, etc. Infinite periodic structures are impossible in a realistic fabrication. When truncating infinite periodic structures, discontinuities occur at the interface and surface waves will be excited according to mode conversion, which leads to the edge effect of finite periodic structures. The prediction of wave natures in the edge cells of finite periodic structures is an indispensable procedure during the design of finite periodic structures. The conventional element-by-element …

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Water pollution through natural and anthropogenic activities has become a global problem causing short-and long-term impact on human and ecosystems. Substantial quantity of individual or mixtures of organic pollutants enter the surface water via point and nonpoint sources and thus affect the quality of freshwater. These pollutants are known to be toxic and difficult to remove by mere biological treatment. To date, most research on the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater were based on the exploitation of individual treatment process. This single-treatment technology has inherent challenges and shortcomings with respect to efficiency and economics. Thus, application of two advanced …

Inverse Volume-Of-Fluid Meshless Method For Efficient Non-Destructive Thermographic Evaluation, Hussein Awad Kurdi Saad
Inverse Volume-Of-Fluid Meshless Method For Efficient Non-Destructive Thermographic Evaluation, Hussein Awad Kurdi Saad
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
A novel computational tool based in the Localized Radial-basis Function (RBF) Collocation (LRC) Meshless method coupled with a Volume-of-Fluid (VoF) scheme capable of accurately and efficiently solving transient multi-dimensional heat conduction problems in composite and heterogeneous media is formulated and implemented. While the LRC Meshless method lends its inherent advantages of spectral convergence and ease of automation, the VoF scheme allows to effectively and efficiently simulate the location, size, and shape of cavities, voids, inclusions, defects, or de-attachments in the conducting media without the need to regenerate point distributions, boundaries, or interpolation matrices. To this end, the Inverse Geometric problem …
Field-Limited Migration Of Li-Ions In Li-Ion Battery, Fuqian Yang
Field-Limited Migration Of Li-Ions In Li-Ion Battery, Fuqian Yang
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
The migration of Li-ions in lithium-ion battery cannot be simply described by Fick's second law; the interactions among ionic migration, field, and stress need to be taken into account when analyzing the migration of Li-ions. Using the theory of thermal activation process, the flux for ionic migration under concurrent action of electric field and mechanical stress is found to be a nonlinear function of the gradient of electric potential and the gradient of stress. Electric field can either accelerate or retard the growth of the lithiation layer, depending on polarity of the field.

Computational Strategy For Accelerating Robust Sound Source Detection In Dynamic Scenes, Kevin D. Donohue, Paul Griffioen
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Efficient sound source detection and location with microphone arrays is important for many applications, including teleconferencing, surveillance, and smart rooms. While the steered response power algorithms exhibit robust performance relative to other approaches, their applications are limited by the high computational load required. For dynamic auditory scenes, the entire space must be scanned at regular intervals due to moving sound sources switching between active and inactive states. This paper introduces a time segmentation and parallelization strategy to speed up the steered response power algorithm for dynamic auditory scenes with multiple speech sources. The primary application targeted by this work is …

Chalcopyrite CuInS2 (CIS) hierarchical structures composed of nanoflakes with a thickness of about 5 nm were synthesized by a facial solvothermal method. The thermodynamically metastable wurtzite phase CIS would be obtained by using InCl3 instead of In(NO3)3 as In precursor. The effects of the In precursor and the volume of concentrated HCl aqueous solution on the phases and morphologies of CIS nanocrystals have been systematically investigated. Experimental results indicated that the obtained phases of CIS nanocrystals were predominantly determined by precursor-induced intermediate products. The photocatalytic properties of chalcopyrite and wurtzite CIS in visible-light-driven degradation of …

The History Of Space Debris, Loretta Hall
Space Traffic Management Conference
This paper examines what space debris consists of and where it came from. In 1958, astronomer Clyde Tombaugh published the results of his research into the existence of natural debris near the Earth, concluding that no such debris existed. During the ensuing fifty-five years, man-made debris has been accumulating to the point that it threatens launches, active satellites, and the International Space Station. NASA reported that as of 2013, more than 21,000 pieces the size of a softball or larger were being tracked, as were about 500,000 pieces at least the size of a marble and “many millions” of pieces …

An Integrated Approach To Orbital Debris Research And Management, Marshall H. Kaplan
Space Traffic Management Conference
A viable space traffic management program faces a great barrier caused by the ever-increasing number and variety of orbiting objects ranging in size from a few microns to several meters. Although several international agreements to limit the growth rate of orbital debris are in place, the risk of damage and destruction to active satellites is continually rising. The urgency of this situation was highlighted by the 2007 Chinese ASAT test and the collision of Iridium and Cosmos satellites in 2009. Although many debris removal techniques have been posited none have been implemented. Unless a space debris reduction program is undertaken …

Weather Research Requirements To Improve Space Launch From Cape Canaveral Air Force Station And Nasa Kennedy Space Center, William P. Roeder, Lisa L. Huddleston, William H. Bauman Iii, Kelly B. Doser
Space Traffic Management Conference
Weather has a large affect on operations at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) and NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Weather is the leading source of scrubs and delays to space launch from CCAFS/KSC. Weather has an even larger impact on ground processing as space launch vehicles and payloads are prepared in the months before space launch. Many of those operations are very sensitive to weather. In addition, the weather in Florida is notoriously difficult to predict, especially during the summer when rapid deep convection can occur in minutes. Finally, the weather can be extremely subtle in this area during …
Calculation For Moment Capacity Of Beam-To-Upright Connections Of Steel Storage Pallet Racks, Tuo Wang, Xianzhong Zhao, Yiyi Chen
Calculation For Moment Capacity Of Beam-To-Upright Connections Of Steel Storage Pallet Racks, Tuo Wang, Xianzhong Zhao, Yiyi Chen
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Steel storage pallet rack structures are three-dimensional framed structures, which are widely used to store different kinds of goods. For the easy accessibility to stored products, pallet racks are not usually braced in the down-aisle direction. The down-aisle stability is mostly provided by the characteristics of beam-to-upright connections, and the characteristics of upright base connections. In this paper, calculation for moment capacity of beam-to-upright connections is carried out. A mechanical model is presented firstly. Based on the model, moment capacity is related to the failure capacity, directly determined by the failure mode, of the topmost tab of the beam-end-connector and …

Design Method Of Bending Load-Carrying Capacity For Sandwich Panels With Different Metal Panel On Both Sides, Yanli Guo, Xingyou Yao, Kai Liu
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
The sandwich panels, with plain and shallow grain pressed metal plate as the face sheets, and glass wools, rigid polyurethane foam, and rock wools as core materials, have excellent heat insulation and mechanical behavior, and been used as curtain walls for tall buildings in recent years in China. Since wind load and temperature action are the main actions for curtain walls, the sandwich panels are flexural members. In this paper, the design method and design formula of flexural load-carrying capacity and flexural deflection of a kind of sandwich plates with different metal panel on both sides are discussed and proposed. …

Study On The Flexural Capacity Of Cold-Formed Steel Joists-Osb Composite Floors, X. H. Zhou, Y. Shi, R. C. Wang, Y. J. Liu
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Two full scale specimens were tested to study the flexural capacity of cold-formed steel joists and OSB (Oriented strand board) composite floors. Test results indicated the composite floors had high bearing capacity and small deformation, and the screw spacing significantly affected the load-carrying capacity. The main failure modes were flexural and torsional buckling of floor joist, and the interactive buckling of compression flange, web and crimp. The wave length of bucking equalled to the adjacent screw spacing. Then the specimens were analyzed by commercial software ANSYS and the nonlinear FEM calculation results agreed well with the test results. Furthermore, detailed …

Finite Element Modeling Of New Composite Floors Having Cold-Formed Steel And Concrete Slab, Yazdan Majdi, Cheng-Tzu Thomas Hsu, Mehdi Zarei
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
In this research, the structural behavior of a new type of U.S. patented composite floor system is explored through finite element modeling. The new composite floor incorporates cold-formed (light-gauge) steel profiles as the joist on bottom, a corrugated steel deck as the formwork for concrete, a hat channel (furring channel) as the continuous shear connector and finally a concrete slab on top. All steel parts in the system are cold-formed and connected together by self-drilling fasteners. In this study, a comprehensive three-dimensional finite element modeling is performed for the composite floor system. A local bond-slip model is applied to simulate …

Innovative Cold-Formed Steel Framed Shear Wall Sheathed With Corrugated Steel Sheets: Experiments And Dynamic Analysis, Cheng Yu, Guowang Yu, Jie Wang
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Cold-formed steel framed shear wall sheathed with corrugated steel sheets is a promising shear wall system for low- and mid-rise constructions in high wind and seismic zones due to its advantages of non-combustibility, high shear strength, and high stiffness. However recent research projects showed that the corrugated steel sheathing demonstrated low ductility. This paper presents an experimental study aimed at improving the ductility of cold-formed steel shear walls sheathed with corrugated steel sheathing. A method of using opening in the sheathing is employed to improve the shear wall’s ductility meanwhile controlling the damage locations and failure mechanism. A total of …

Bond-Slip Characteristics Between Cold-Formed Metal And Concrete, Yazdan Majdi, Cheng-Tzu Thomas Hsu, Sun Punurai
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Composite action in systems consisting of steel and concrete depends on an effective shear-transfer mechanism between the two materials. Such mechanism for smooth steel surfaces inside concrete will be limited to the bond-slip behavior at the steel/concrete interfaces. This research investigates the bond-slip behavior of galvanized cold-formed (light gauge) steel profiles embedded in concrete. A new innovative pull-out test is presented and global bond-slip curves for different values of concrete strength are obtained from such tests. Next, through an innovative procedure, mathematical equations and a few points from the experimental global bond-slip curves are used to develop a bi-linear local …

Simplified Seismic Design For Mid-Rise Buildings With Vertical Combination Of Cold-Formed Steel And Concrete Framing, X. L. Yuan, L. Xu
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Presented in this paper is a practical approach for the seismic design of mid-rise buildings with vertical combination of cold-formed steel and concrete framing. In current design practice the presence of vertical irregularities on both mass and stiffness inherited in such building structures creates a challenge for the seismic design. Currently, a two stage lateral force procedure prescribed in ASCE 7 is prescribed for evaluating the seismic load if the lateral stiffness of the lower structure of the building is considerably more rigid than the upper one. In the proposed approach the requirement associated with the two stage analysis procedure …

Improvements To The Prediction Of Brace Forces In Z-Purlin Roof Systems With Support + Third Point Bracing, Michael W. Seek
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
The Component Stiffness Method is a displacement compatibility method used to analyze C- and Z- section supported roof systems. The method provides a detailed analysis of the flexibility in the roof system and the distribution of forces as they flow out of the system. Parametric studies of the equations for typical roof systems have shown that by ignoring the flexibility of some of the components, the method can be simplified with little impact on the anchorage forces calculated. Changes have also been made to the way in which cross section deformations are incorporated into the method. This paper focuses on …
