Vibrator, as a crucial vehicle of oil and gas exploration, is challenged by the complex terrains. The probability of rollover accident is therefore high in bumpy terrain in which the drivers' life is seriously threatened. Finite element numerical analysis was used to study the injury of the driver's head, neck and chest in the rollover accidents of domestic KZ-28 type vibrator on different conditions. The injuries of three parts were evaluated based on the human injury criteria. Driver's safety on different rollover conditions was comparatively analyzed. The results indicated that the injury degree of human head caused by vibrator rollover …

Assessment Of Multi-Mode Spacecraft Micropropulsion Systems, Steven P. Berg, Joshua L. Rovey
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Multi-mode spacecraft micro propulsion systems which include a high-thrust chemical mode and high-specific impulse electric mode are assessed with specific reference to cube sat-sized satellite applications. Both cold gas Freon-14 propellant and ionic liquid chemical monopropellant modes were investigated alongside pulsed plasma, electrospray, and helicon electric thruster modes. Systems involving chemical monopropellants have the highest payload mass fractions for a reference mission of a 500 m/s delta-V and 6U sized cube sat for electric propulsion usage below 55% of total delta-V. For higher electric propulsion usage, cold gas thrusters delivered a higher payload mass fraction due to lower system inert …
Adaptive Control Of Uncertain Systems With Gain Scheduled Reference Models, Mehrdad Pakmehr, Tansel Yucelen
Adaptive Control Of Uncertain Systems With Gain Scheduled Reference Models, Mehrdad Pakmehr, Tansel Yucelen
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper develops a new model reference adaptive control approach for uncertain systems with gain scheduled reference models in a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) setting. Specifically, adaptive state feedback for output tracking control problem of MIMO nonlinear systems is studied and gain scheduled reference model system is used for generating desired state trajectories. Using convex optimization tools, a single Lyapunov matrix is computed for multiple linearization's near equilibrium and non-equilibrium points of the nonlinear closed loop gain scheduled reference system. This approach guarantees stability of the closed loop gain scheduled system. Adaptive state feedback control scheme is then developed, and its …
Adaptive Architectures For Distributed Control Of Modular Systems, Tansel Yucelen, Jeff S. Shamma
Adaptive Architectures For Distributed Control Of Modular Systems, Tansel Yucelen, Jeff S. Shamma
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We consider the distributed control of large-scale modular systems, i.e., systems consist of physically interconnected (and possibly heterogeneous) submodules that use local information to achieve a given set of global objectives. A graph-theoretic approach is used to model the unknown physical interactions between submodules and utilize an adaptive control algorithm to learn and cancel the effect of such interactions as well as the submodule-level modeling uncertainties asymptotically by allowing submodules to locally communicate with each other through the graph. The key feature of our framework is to bound the mismatch error between the actual and desired closed-loop modular system performance …

Control-Oriented Modeling Of Laser Metal Deposition As A Repetitive Process, Patrick M. Sammons, Douglas A. Bristow, Robert G. Landers
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) is an additive manufacturing process whose dynamics are driven by complex heat transfer and fluid flow phenomena. The LMD process, along with every additive manufacturing process, is fundamentally a two-dimensional process possessing both temporal (or spatial) domain dynamics and propagation of information from layer to layer. However, modeling the two-dimensionality of the process for use in control has received little attention. Here, a model aimed at capturing the important nonlinear two-dimensional physical processes of the melt pool shape, while maintaining simplicity, is presented. The model is expressed in a form that lends itself to the design …

Antenna-coupled Metal-Oxide-Metal (MOM) diodes have been demonstrated for sensing and proposed for energy harvesting at THz, infrared, and even visible frequencies. The design of the antenna allows engineering of the response of the device with respect to polarization, wavelength and angle of incidence. The classic understanding of the antenna coupled MOM diode is that the electric field generated by the antenna causes electrons to tunnel through the barrier oxide. This is supported by the fact that when the oxide separates metals with different work functions, a properly polarized field can produce an asymmetric tunnel current under zero bias. Losses in …

Fluid-Structure Interaction Simulations Of A Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle, Alex W. Byrd
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Interest in micro air vehicles (MAVs) for reconnaissance and surveillance has grown steadily in the last decade. Prototypes are being developed and built with a variety of capabilities, such as the ability to hover and glide. However, the design of these vehicles is hindered by the lack of understanding of the underlying physics; therefore, the design process for MAVs has relied mostly on trial-and-error based production. Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) techniques can be used to improve upon the results found in traditional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. In this thesis, a verification of FSI is first completed, followed by FSI MAV …

While catchphrases such as big data, smart data, data intensive science, or smart dust highlight different aspects, they share a common theme: Namely, a shift towards a data-centric perspective in which the synthesis and analysis of data at an ever-increasing spatial, temporal, and thematic resolution promises new insights, while, at the same time, reducing the need for strong domain theories as starting points. In terms of the envisioned methodologies, those catchphrases tend to emphasize the role of predictive analytics, i.e., statistical techniques including data mining and machine learning, as well as supercomputing. Interestingly, however, while this perspective takes the availability …
Bioengineered Hearts, Rivky Loeb
Bioengineered Hearts, Rivky Loeb
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Heart disease is one of the highest causes for fatality in the world. Although many such diseases can be treated by a heart transplant, this in itself can cause countless problems. Aside from the high demand for donor hearts, there is the risk of the patient’s immune system rejecting the transplanted heart. A bioengineered heart would reduce the need for donor hearts, and thus save countless lives. Finding a suitable scaffold, obtaining appropriate cells, and ensuring that the tissue will function properly are the main focuses in creating an artificial heart. While most of the studies done have been concentrated …
Computationally Efficient Representation Of Statistically Described Material Microstructure For Tractable Forming Simulations, Nicholas Landry
Computationally Efficient Representation Of Statistically Described Material Microstructure For Tractable Forming Simulations, Nicholas Landry
Honors Theses and Capstones
The purpose of this project is to reduce a large statistical distribution of metal microstructure orientations to a manageable distribution to be used in metal forming simulations. Microstructure sensitive simulations at the macro-scale are impractical, because with so many state variables associated with material microstructure data, these simulations are extremely computationally expensive.
The goal was to develop a framework to accurately model plastic material response while representing the material microstructure in a more compact form, reducing 106 or more microstructure orientations to a significantly smaller statistical distribution of representative orientations. This will significantly increase the computational efficiency and make the …

Physical vapor deposited two-dimensional (2D) materials span larger areas compared to exfoliated flakes, but suffer from very small grain or domain sizes. In this letter, we fabricate freestanding molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and amorphous boron nitride (BN) specimens to expose both surfaces. We performed in situ heating in a transmission electron microscope to observe the domain restructuring in real time. The freestanding MoS2 specimens showed up to 100× increase in domain size, while the amorphous BN transformed in to polycrystalline hexagonal BN (h-BN) at temperatures around 600 °C much lower than the 850–1000 °C range cited in the literature.

In view of the vast number of new nanomaterials (NMs) that require testing and the constraints associated with animal models, the majority of studies to elucidate nanotoxicological effects have occurred in vitro, with limited correlation and applicability to in vivo systems and realistic, occupational exposure scenarios.
In this study, we developed and implemented a chronic in vitromodel coupled with lower, regulatory dosages in order to provide a more realistic assessment of NM-dependent consequences and illuminate the implications of long-term NM exposure. When keratinocytes were exposed to 50 nm silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs), we determined that chronically dosed cells operated …

Comparison Of Role Of Nano-Sized Extra Supports On Pt-Based Catalyst For Propane Dehydrogenation And Wox-Based Catalyst For Propene Metathesis, Adisak Guntida
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In this thesis, the role of nano-sized extra supports was studied. The different types of nano-sized supports (ZrO2, TiO2, Al2O3, and SiO2) were physically mixed with WOx-based catalysts for propene metathesis reaction and Pt-based catalysts for propane dehydrogenation reaction as extra support. The dispersions of active sites were improved in both metathesis and dehydrogenation catalysts by the addition of nano-sized extra supports. The migration of active sites from the main catalyst onto the nano-sized extra support during thermal treatment via thermal spreading is a key for this improvement. The surface energy of nano-sized extra support and concentration of metal active …

Coke Deposition On Wox/Sio2 Catalyst Physically Mixed With Magnesium Oxide For Metathesis Reaction Of Ethylene And 2-Butene, Thidaya Thitiapichart
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The presence of MgO physically mixed with silica supported tungsten oxide catalysts was investigated in metathesis reaction using ethylene and trans-2-butene as feeds. Adding MgO could enhance the conversion of trans-2-butene and propylene yield, comparing with a catalyst mixed with SiO2 as a referenced one. However, the presence of MgO with silica supported tungsten oxide catalysts surprisingly elevated the coke deposition. The coke precursor was formed by MgO from isomerization of undesired products like C5+ and moved to deposit on the acid sites of silica supported tungsten oxide catalysts which is a coke site of the catalysts. Furthermore, the distance …

Effect Of Particle Size Of Silica And Sio2/Mao Ratios On Heterogeneous Metallocene Catalyst Performance And Polyethylene Properties, Chalermpong Ramrauytham
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The metallocene catalyst is one of the catalysts, used to produce polyethylene having narrow molecular weight distribution. So, the metallocene catalyst has been interesting in many researches. To activate metallocene catalyst in ethylene polymerization, methylaluminoxane has been used as cocatalyst because it makes high activity for metallocene catalyst. However, both of them are in solution form, which make fouling in reactor and not good morphology in slurry ethylene polymerization. This problem has been solved by heterogeneous metallocene catalyst. Silica is widely used for heterogeneous metallocene catalyst because of high surface area and good morphology. This research is aimed to study …

Effect of these parameters on the formation of methylaluminoxane which was used for the efficient activator for metallocene catalyst in ethylene polymerization, was focused. Benzoic acid and TMA were used as the reactants in this route. In the first part, the various TMA:BA ratios were investigated. It was found that TMA:BA= 2.4 was the suitable ratio to form MAO, which had the highest conversion of initial TMA and high activity. In the second part, the holding time of reaction was studied to improve the formation of MAO …

Impact Of Hydrotalcite Co-Catalyst On Metathesis Of Ethylene And2-Butene Over Silica-Zeolite Supported Tungsten Catalysts, Kriangkrai Aranyarat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Silica-zeolite supported tungsten oxide catalysts were physically mixed with hydrotalcite synthesized by co-precipitation method and investigated in the metathesis reaction of ethylene and trans-2-butene for propylene production. In this work, the effects of transition metal (a, b, c) doping on the hydrotalcite catalysts and N2-pretreatment on the catalytic properties of hydrotalcite mixed WO3-based catalysts were studied. The use of b-doped hydrotalcite with b/Mg-Al ratio 0.18 mixed with the WO3-based catalysts was found to increase the metathesis activity due to the higher amount of tungsten active species formed on the WO3-based catalysts and the higher isomerization activity of the b-doped hydrotalcite. …

Scheduling In A Textile Dyeing Factory, Nattakarn Uttamapinant
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The objective of this research is to develop a scheduling system for a textile dyeing factory in order to reduce production lead time and late deliveries. The factory has 9 un-identical groups of machines with capacities ranging from 10 kg to 800 kg. On average, it processes 140 jobs per week. It has a problem of late delivery caused by jobs that have different fabrics to be dyed to the same colors and must be dyed together in the same dyeing machine. Scheduling these jobs is complicated because a large portion of them will need re-dyeing and it is not …

The objective of this research is to improve efficiency of picking process to meet customer expectation, hence, increase customer satisfaction and trust. This research proposes three phases of methodology, which are define, propose and implement phase, to increase efficiency of picking process by controlling and minimising picking time. Define phase describes warehouse picking process activities and procedures and defines problems and their effects. Key performance indices are brainstormed based on the problems to identify factors that are able to indicate level of picking process efficiency. In propose phase, customer behaviours, customer types, and time expectations are observed. Opportunities for improvement …
Copper-Silver Conductive Film By Spray Pyrolysis Of Copper-Silver Amine Complexes, Walailuk Limkitnuwat
Copper-Silver Conductive Film By Spray Pyrolysis Of Copper-Silver Amine Complexes, Walailuk Limkitnuwat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Copper-silver conductive films were fabricated on glass and polyimide substrates by spray pyrolysis of copper-silver amine complex ink in nitrogen atmosphere. The conductive ink was synthesized by mixing of copper (II) acetate monohydrate, silver oxide, ammonia solution, diethanolamine and distilled water. The effects of molar ratio of copper to silver, spray pyrolysis temperature, sintering time and substrate used were studied. The conductive films obtained contained copper and silver nanoparticles. However, copper-silver alloy particles were not observed. Molar ratio of copper to silver affected copper and silver crystallite sizes. The particle packing density synthesized at 200 oC was more compact than …
