Computational Modeling Of Drug Release From Nerve Guide Conduit Of Different Designs, Lokesh Shamkant Patil
Bioengineering Theses - Archive
Currently there are limited effective strategies and surgical methods for repairing gap peripheral nerve injuries. Autografts are commonly used but with major limitation in the availability of donor graft material and the painful sensations at donor site. These limitations call for the development of new, effective methods for repairing peripheral nerve injuries. The use of nerve guide conduits to facilitate nerve growth and repair have shown promising potential with minimum side-effects but still with limited success in a full functional recovery. The likely clinical outcome could benefit significantly with the use of engineering methodologies in the design, fabrication, surgical delivery …

Cross Wavelet Analysis Of Cerebral Hemodynamics In Young And Older Adults, Mrunmayee Sunil Gandhi
Bioengineering Theses - Archive
Measurement of cerebral autoregulation is important for the evaluation of a number of clinical disorders that affect cerebral blood flow. Cerebral autoregulation is a mechanism that involves dilation and constriction in arterioles to maintain relatively stable cerebral blood flow in response to changes of systemic blood pressure. Traditional assessments of autoregulation focus on the changes of cerebral blood flow velocity in response to large blood pressure fluctuations induced by interventions. This approach is not feasible for patients with impaired autoregulation or cardiovascular regulation. Therefore in this thesis, a non-stationary time-frequency analysis method, Cross Wavelet Transform is used, which assess autoregulation …

Simulation Feasibility Studies Of A High Density Fnirs Imaging System, Pallavi Natekar
Bioengineering Theses - Archive
Functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a technique that enables monitoring brain function, by detecting changes in near-infrared light absorbance resulting from changes in brain hemodynamics during periods of rest and activation. Although the technique has some advantages over other conventional functional imaging methods with its inherently high temporal sampling and detection sensitivity, the sparse spatial sampling of current fNIRS systems limits spatial resolution and requires help from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to attain spatial co-registration with anatomical structures. In this work we have performed simulations to test the feasibility of using a high density spatial sampling system as a …

Most of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems currently use manual entry or mass upload methods to enter data collected from warehouse operations. These methods are highly unreliable and prone to manual error affecting the data accuracy. Data accuracy and accurate real-time data are required by businesses for many critical decisions. Unreliable data becomes invalid and have a negative performance impact on ERP systems that can lead to economic loss to the organization. Automatic Identification (Auto-ID) technologies are used to track and collect data in real time or near real time. They can be integrated into ERP systems automatically to provide …

The only major concern regarding the …
Fabrication Of Superhydrophobic Polystyrene Surfaces With Tunable Adhesion By Modulating Strain Recovery Temperature, Prasha Sarwate
Fabrication Of Superhydrophobic Polystyrene Surfaces With Tunable Adhesion By Modulating Strain Recovery Temperature, Prasha Sarwate
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
In this work, different superhydrophobic structures were fabricated on the surfaces of polystyrene (PS) blocks, using oxygen reactive ion etch (ORIE) and controllable strain recovery. The PS used here is a thermal shape memory polymer (SMP). Microhills are first generated on the surface of a PS block by ORIE. The PS block is then heated up, which triggers the strain recovery. During this process of recovering its original shape, the PS block gradually reduces its lateral dimensions, while increasing its thickness. Using different recovery temperatures, the surface morphologies can be controlled, which provides an approach to adjust surface wetting properties, …

This study utilizes radar-based precipitation data from the National Weather Service West Gulf River Forecast Center to extract the depth-area-duration relationships via the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' software HEC-MetVue. Extreme storms from 1997-2013 were analyzed to determine the characteristics for synthetic design storms. Design storms of 10, 25, 50 and 100 year return periods were developed and simulated using the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' hydrologic modeling tool, HEC-HMS. Finally, flood frequency analysis using the existing method was carried out for comparison and hydrologic impact assessment. The depth-area-duration curves produced were converted to areal-reduction factors for comparison with Technical …
Strength And Stiffness Characteristics Of Lime Stabilized Soil In A Flexible Pavement Design, Andrew James Domke
Strength And Stiffness Characteristics Of Lime Stabilized Soil In A Flexible Pavement Design, Andrew James Domke
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Lime treatment has proven to be a useful tool for stabilizing expansive soils. Expansive soils cause major damage to flexible and rigid pavements every year, since seasonal changes in soil moisture creates cyclical changes in the forces acting on a pavement. The use of lime to stabilize soil can reduce the soil's swell potential and add strength and stiffness to a pavement's subgrade. Due to the improved physical properties, lime stabilized soil (LSS) can be considered as part of the structural pavement layers. Utilizing LSS as a subbase in the pavement structure can reduce the thickness of the more expensive …

Quantized Nonnegative Matrix Factorization, Ruairí De Fréin
Quantized Nonnegative Matrix Factorization, Ruairí De Fréin
Conference papers
Even though Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) in its original form performs rank reduction and signal compaction implicitly, it does not explicitly consider storage or transmission constraints. We propose a Frobenius-norm Quantized Nonnegative Matrix Factorization algorithm that is 1) almost as precise as traditional NMF for decomposition ranks of interest (with in 1-4dB), 2) admits to practical encoding techniques by learning a factorization which is simpler than NMF’s (by a factor of 20-70) and 3) exhibits a complexity which is comparable with state-of-the-art NMF methods. These properties are achieved by considering the quantization residual via an outer quantization optimization step, in …

Context-Aware Mobile Augmented Reality Visualization In Construction Engineering Education, Arezoo Shirazi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent studies suggest that the number of students pursuing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees has been generally decreasing. An extensive body of research cites the lack of motivation and engagement in the learning process as a major underlying reason of this decline. It has been discussed that if properly implemented, instructional technology can enhance student engagement and the quality of learning. Therefore, the main goal of this research is to implement and assess effectiveness of augmented reality (AR)-based pedagogical tools on student learning. For this purpose, two sets of experiments were designed and implemented in two different construction …

High Resolution Time-Resolved Imaging System In The Vacuum Ultraviolet Region, Yuseong Jang
High Resolution Time-Resolved Imaging System In The Vacuum Ultraviolet Region, Yuseong Jang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
High-power debris-free vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light sources have applications in several scientific and engineering areas, such as high volume manufacturing lithography and inspection tools in the semiconductor industry, as well as other applications in material processing and photochemistry. For the past decades, the semiconductor industry has been driven by what is called "Moore's Law". The entire semiconductor industry relies on this rule, which requires chip makers to pack transistors more tightly with every new generation of chips, shrinking the size of transistors. The ability to solve roadmap challenges is, at least partly, proportional to our ability to measure them. The …

Practical Implementations Of The Active Set Method For Support Vector Machine Training With Semi-Definite Kernels, Christopher Sentelle
Practical Implementations Of The Active Set Method For Support Vector Machine Training With Semi-Definite Kernels, Christopher Sentelle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Support Vector Machine (SVM) is a popular binary classification model due to its superior generalization performance, relative ease-of-use, and applicability of kernel methods. SVM training entails solving an associated quadratic programming (QP) that presents significant challenges in terms of speed and memory constraints for very large datasets; therefore, research on numerical optimization techniques tailored to SVM training is vast. Slow training times are especially of concern when one considers that re-training is often necessary at several values of the models regularization parameter, C, as well as associated kernel parameters. The active set method is suitable for solving SVM problem …
Complementary Layered Learning, Sean Mondesire
Complementary Layered Learning, Sean Mondesire
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Layered learning is a machine learning paradigm used to develop autonomous robotic-based agents by decomposing a complex task into simpler subtasks and learns each sequentially. Although the paradigm continues to have success in multiple domains, performance can be unexpectedly unsatisfactory. Using Boolean-logic problems and autonomous agent navigation, we show poor performance is due to the learner forgetting how to perform earlier learned subtasks too quickly (favoring plasticity) or having difficulty learning new things (favoring stability). We demonstrate that this imbalance can hinder learning so that task performance is no better than that of a suboptimal learning technique, monolithic learning, which …

Electrospinning is a widely applicable technique that generates non-woven fibers in the micro and nano range. In this project two of its applications are highlighted namely filtration media and enhancement of wettability. The first project demonstrates that electrospinning can be used to produce new fiber filtration media with controlled microstructure. The bimodal and unimodal orthogonal and random filters were made and characterized against their filtration efficiency and pressure drop. Figure of Merit (FOM) was also calculated and discussed. It is shown that the FOM increases when the electrospun fibers are arranged into alternating layers of aligned course and fine fibers. …

Between 20% to 50% of industrial energy input is lost as waste heat in the form of hot exhaust gases, cooling water and energy loss from generating equipment. Vibrations and variable heating are a common form of waste energy in motors, generators, power cables exposed to ambient temperatures, fuel exhausts from vehicles, and various types of heavy machinery. The recovery of even a fraction of this lost energy would have a transformational impact on the utility industry since the demand for energy is increasing and the impact of this demand on the environment is significant. Recent technical breakthroughs in new …

Timekeeping Issues In Ultra-Quality Metering Systems, David D. Haynes, Steven M. Corns
Timekeeping Issues In Ultra-Quality Metering Systems, David D. Haynes, Steven M. Corns
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The improvements made to smart metering systems in terms of performance and accuracy have in many cases created a gap in the requirements for timekeeping performance. When clock errors accumulate in different metrology systems, data collected from one system cannot be compared to data collected from another system. This paper recommends the use of a common time base for all data gathering systems, and that systems clocks are corrected with numerous minor corrections when possible, rather than major corrections. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper investigates the benefits that cooperative communication brings to cognitive radio networks. We focus on cooperative Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology, where multiple distributed single-antenna secondary users cooperate on data transmission and reception. Three cooperative MIMO paradigms are proposed to maximize the diversity gain and significantly improve the performance of overlay, underlay and interweave systems. In the paradigm for overlay systems the secondary users can assist (relay) the primary transmissions even when they are far away from the primary users. In the paradigm for underlay systems the secondary users can share the primary users’ frequency resources without any …

Array of atmospheric pressure surface discharges confined by a two-dimensional hexagon electrode mesh is studied for its discharge modes and temporal evolution so as to a theoretical underpinning to their growing applications in medicine, aerodynamic control, and environmental remediation. Helium plasma surface-confined by one hexagon-shaped rim electrode is shown to evolve from a Townsend mode to a normal and abnormal glow mode, and its evolution develops from the rim electrodes as six individual microdischarges merging in the middle of the hexagon mesh element. Within one hexagon element, microdischarges remain largely static with the mesh electrode being the instantaneous cathode, but …

Background: Extensive movement of fingers while playing video games, and while browsing or texting in a smartphone often result in medically recognized repetitive strain injuries such as "PlayStation thumb" or "Blackberry thumb". In order to understand the strenuous effects of these tasks, it is important to study the geometry of the movement of fingers (kinematics), corresponding muscle activities (physiology), and the overall posture of the tasks (ergonomics). There is almost no information available in the present literature regarding the finger kinematics of video gaming. Although texting and browsing tasks have been studied, a multifaceted approach including kinematic, physiological and postural …

The motion-adaptive radiotherapy techniques are promising to deliver ablative radiation doses to tumor with minimal normal tissue exposure by accounting for real-time tumor movement. However, a major challenge of successful applications of these techniques is the real-time prediction of target motion to accommodate system delivery latencies. Predicting respiratory motion in real-time is challenging. The current respiratory mo-tion prediction approaches are still not satisfactory in terms of accuracy and interpretability due to the com-plexity of breathing patterns and the many sources of variability across patients. In this paper, we propose a novel respiratory motion prediction approach based on future values of …

When a miscarriage occurs, it affects the entire family unit, making coping an important part of healing during this time. After miscarriage, women are at increased risk for developing mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. Miscarriage is seldom seen as a concern for the father of the lost child, and thus their feelings are often ignored. It is important for the nurse to know how to best help these men, women, and the rest of the involved family cope after miscarriage so they can move on in a healthy way. The following is a review of the literature to …
Efficient Anonymous Biometric Matching In Privacy-Aware Environments, Ying Luo
Efficient Anonymous Biometric Matching In Privacy-Aware Environments, Ying Luo
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Video surveillance is an important tool used in security and environmental monitoring, however, the widespread deployment of surveillance cameras has raised serious privacy concerns. Many privacy-enhancing schemes have been recently proposed to automatically redact images of selected individuals in the surveillance video for protection. To identify these individuals for protection, the most reliable approach is to use biometric signals as they are immutable and highly discriminative. If misused, these characteristics of biometrics can seriously defeat the goal of privacy protection. In this dissertation, an Anonymous Biometric Access Control (ABAC) procedure is proposed based on biometric signals for privacy-aware video surveillance. …
