The Brain’S Response To Music Using Fmri, Todd Harris, Dr. Travis Oliphant Jan 2014

The Brain’S Response To Music Using Fmri, Todd Harris, Dr. Travis Oliphant

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While it is obvious that hearing a sound produces measurable changes in the brain’s auditory cortex, it is less clear how a compilation of tones, beats, and rhythms affect other areas. In this study I use fMRI to observe which structures in the brain become active in response to music in three male subjects. My results show that different music pieces have unique and measurable affects on the brain. A strong determining factor on the effect that music has is the familiarity of the music to the listener. Results show that familiar music reduces overall brain activity while stimulating a …

The treatment of wastewater or sewage is a multi-step process. One of the steps involves the treatment of the organic mass collected during the treatment process. There are several different methods of treating this organic mass or sludge. At the Springville Wastewater Treatment Facility, the sludge is decomposed under anaerobic conditions into simpler forms of organic solids for safe disposal. Two different types of bacteria are used to decompose the sludge. The products of the sludge decomposition are methane, carbon dioxide, water, and simpler organic solids. The amount of methane produced by the bacteria depends on the system used and …

Study Of The Effect Of Wind Speed On Evaporation From Soil Through Integrated Modeling Of The Atmospheric Boundary Layer And Shallow Subsurface, Hossein Davarzani, Kathleen Smits, Ryan M. T Tolene, Tissa Illangasekare

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

In an effort to develop methods based on integrating the subsurface to the atmospheric boundary layer to estimate evaporation, we developed a model based on the coupling of Navier-Stokes free flow and Darcy flow in porous medium. The model was tested using experimental data to study the effect of wind speed on evaporation. The model consists of the coupled equations of mass conservation for two-phase flow in porous medium with single-phase flow in the free-flow domain under nonisothermal, nonequilibrium phase change conditions. In this model, the evaporation rate and soil surface temperature and relative humidity at the interface come directly …

Our daily lives are dependent upon petroleum. This is evident in the fact that 26.4% of the United States’ energy consumption is used directly for transportation in the form of liquid fuels.1 To prevent shortages in gasoline, jet fuel, home heating oil, and other petroleum products, alternatives will be needed to supplement the rising world demand. As a citizen that will raise a family during a time when alternative energy sources will need to be implemented, I have a keen interest in how we will meet our energy needs and where we will get those resources. One alternative is the …

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A comprehensive laboratory investigation was conducted to study volume change behaviors of five different types of expansive clayey soils sampled from various regions in Texas, USA. The laboratory test results, which were presented in an earlier paper, are analyzed here to evaluate existing correlations that can be used to predict swell and shrink-related displacements in these soils. The test database is also used to develop newer and practical models for predicting volume change-related soil properties. Models developed here used soil plasticity and compaction properties as independent variables. Newer models, that rely on seasonal compaction moisture content variations in the subsoils, …

Impact Of Structure, Material Properties, Temperature Curling, And Trafficking On Load Transfer Efficiency, Charles Cunliffe Jan 2014

Impact Of Structure, Material Properties, Temperature Curling, And Trafficking On Load Transfer Efficiency, Charles Cunliffe

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the impact of structure, material properties, temperature gradient and trafficking on load transfer efficiency of rigid airfield pavements. The current FAA mechanistic design procedure for rigid pavements assumes constant stress-based load transfer efficiency (LTE (S)) of 25% at the joints. The design procedure assumes the material properties remain constant throughout the life of the pavement. Furthermore, the design procedure does not directly consider the effect that temperature induced slab curling can have on joint LTE (S). Analysis is conducted from full scale accelerated pavement test data from the National Airport Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF) operated by the …

Microstructure And Magnetic Properties Of Bulk Nanocrystalline Mnal, Anurag Chaturvedi, Rumana Yaqub, Ian Baker

Dartmouth Scholarship

MnAl is a promising rare-earth free permanent magnet for technological use. We have examined the effects of consolidation by back-pressure, assisted equal channel angular extrusion processing on mechanically-milled, gas-atomized Mn-46% at. Al powder. X-ray diffraction showed both that the extruded rod consisted mostly of metastable τ phase, with some of the equilibrium γ2 and β phases, and that it largely retained the as-milled nanostructure. Magnetic measurements show a coercivity of ≤4.4 kOe and a magnetization at 10 kOe of ≤40 emu/g. In addition, extrusions exhibit greater than 95% of the theoretical density. This study opens a new window in …

The Developing Length Of Electro-Osmotic Flow, Joseph Scott Tenny, Dr. Daniel Maynes Jan 2014

The Developing Length Of Electro-Osmotic Flow, Joseph Scott Tenny, Dr. Daniel Maynes

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Recent advancements in technology have created the need for increased understanding of fluid flow in microtubes with a diameter of a 100μm or less. These types of flows can occur in many practical applications, one of which is a concept proposed for DNA analysis called “lab on a chip.” At this physical scale, the pressures required to drive the flow of the fluid are often too large for any type of potential application. An alternative approach to driving the fluid through a microtube is to use electro-osmosis. This type of flow uses an applied voltage potential to drive the fluid …

A Glycosaminoglycan Based, Modular Tissue Scaffold System For Rapid Assembly Of Perfusable, High Cell Density, Engineered Tissues, Ramkumar Tiruvannamalai-Annamalai, David Randall Armant, Howard W. T Matthew

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research Publications

The limited ability to vascularize and perfuse thick, cell-laden tissue constructs has hindered efforts to engineer complex tissues and organs, including liver, heart and kidney. The emerging field of modular tissue engineering aims to address this limitation by fabricating constructs from the bottom up, with the objective of recreating native tissue architecture and promoting extensive vascularization. In this paper, we report the elements of a simple yet efficient method for fabricating vascularized tissue constructs by fusing biodegradable microcapsules with tunable interior environments. Parenchymal cells of various types, (i.e. trophoblasts, vascular smooth muscle cells, hepatocytes) were suspended in glycosaminoglycan (GAG) solutions …

While it is increasingly recognized that three-dimensional (3D) cell culture models recapitulate drug responses of human cancers with more fidelity than monolayer cultures, a lack of quantitative analysis methods limit their implementation for reliable and routine assessment of emerging therapies. Here, we introduce an approach based on computational analysis of fluorescence image data to provide high-content readouts of dose-dependent cytotoxicity, growth inhibition, treatment-induced architectural changes and size-dependent response in 3D tumour models. We demonstrate this approach in adherent 3D ovarian and pancreatic multiwell extracellular matrix tumour overlays subjected to a panel of clinically relevant cytotoxic modalities and appropriately designed controls …
