Web Archive Services Framework For Tighter Integration Between The Past And Present Web, Ahmed Alsum Apr 2014

Web Archive Services Framework For Tighter Integration Between The Past And Present Web, Ahmed Alsum

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Web archives have contained the cultural history of the web for many years, but they still have a limited capability for access. Most of the web archiving research has focused on crawling and preservation activities, with little focus on the delivery methods. The current access methods are tightly coupled with web archive infrastructure, hard to replicate or integrate with other web archives, and do not cover all the users' needs. In this dissertation, we focus on the access methods for archived web data to enable users, third-party developers, researchers, and others to gain knowledge from the web archives. We build …

Design And Implementation Of An Aircraft Human-In-The-Loop Engineering Simulator, Joshua Reed Apr 2014

Design And Implementation Of An Aircraft Human-In-The-Loop Engineering Simulator, Joshua Reed

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Simulation is a powerful tool for examining a dynamic system or process, but ensuring the model represents the real world sufficiently well for a given objective is difficult. This thesis will present and explain the methodology used to design a Human-In-The-Loop Engineering Aircraft Simulator. For aircraft simulation, numerical methods must be employed to perform the calculations required. The number of required calculations per second is computationally and resource expensive. Some existing aircraft simulations trade off mathematical accuracy of the model so available computing power can be used to run a human interface. Conversely, another simulator may have a very poor …

Cloud-Based Storage Applications For Smart Phones: Forensic Investigation Of Cloud Storage Applications, Radoslaw Ochrymowicz

Dissertations

The proliferation of smart phones across the globe, development of 4G network standards and its progressing implementation along with shift towards cloud computing bring risks to smart phone users who avail of these service. Security of cloud storage mobile applications should be essential to smart phone users. Enterprises’ move to huge data centres and availing of their infrastructure, platform and service is an advantage but poses a risk. Users use corporate resources managed and administered with security in mind of policy makers but it is still possible to use unsecure, designed for users services without business being aware of it. …

Gaming Against Plagiarism (Gap): A Game-Based Approach To Illustrate Research Misconduct To Undergraduate Engineering Students, Rami J. Haddad, Youakim Kalaani

Electrical & Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we discuss our experience using a set of games called "Gaming Against Plagiarism" to increase awareness in different types of research misconduct, and highlight the ramification of committing such misconducts among undergraduate engineering students. Gaming Against Plagiarism consists of three mini-games that address research misconduct. The types of research misconduct addressed are stealing, misquoting, patchwriting, insufficient paraphrasing, self-plagiarism, data falsification, and data fabrication. In these games, students are virtually put into situations involving research misconduct. The students either have to identify the type of misconduct or make an ethical decision by avoiding research misconduct. We assessed the …

High-Performance Doped Strontium Iodide Crystal Growth Using A Modified Bridgman Method, Emmanuel Rowe Mar 2014

High-Performance Doped Strontium Iodide Crystal Growth Using A Modified Bridgman Method, Emmanuel Rowe

Theses and Dissertations

The importance of gamma-ray spectroscopy – the science of determining the distribution of energy in a gamma field – can rarely be overstated. High performance scintillators for gamma-ray spectroscopy in Nuclear Nonproliferation applications and homeland security require excellent energy resolution to distinguish neighboring element and isotope lines while minimizing the time and exposure to do so. Semiconductor detectors operate by converting incident photons directly into electrical pulses, but often have problems of high costs due to constituent segregation and surface states as is the case for Cadmium Zinc Telluride. The ideal scintillator material for gamma spectrometer will therefore requires high …

Memristor-Based Neuron Circuit And Method For Applying Learning Algorithm In Spice, Christopher Yakopcic, R. Hasan, T.M. Taha, M. Mclean, D. Palmer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The learning of nonlinearly separable functions in cascaded memristor crossbar circuits is described and the feasibility of using them to develop low-power neuromorphic processors is demonstrated. This is the first study evaluating the training of memristor crossbars through SPICE simulations. It is important to capture the alternate current paths and wire resistance inherent in these circuits. The simulations show that neural network learning algorithms are able to train in the presence of alternate current paths and wire resistances. The fact that the approach reduces the area by three times and power by two orders of magnitude compared with the existing …

Through-Silicon-Via Inductor: Is It Real Or Just A Fantasy?, Umamaheswara Rao Tida, Cheng Zhuo, Yiyu Shi Mar 2014

Through-Silicon-Via Inductor: Is It Real Or Just A Fantasy?, Umamaheswara Rao Tida, Cheng Zhuo, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Through-silicon-vias (TSVs) can potentially be used to implement inductors in three-dimensional (3D) integrated systems for minimal footprint and large inductance. However, different from conventional 2D spiral inductors, TSV inductors are fully buried in the lossy substrate, thus suffering from low quality factor. In this paper, we propose a novel shield mechanism utilizing the micro-channel, a technique conventionally used for heat removal, to reduce the substrate loss. This technique increases the quality factor and the inductance of the TSV inductor by up to 21x and 17x respectively. It enables us to implement TSV inductors of up to 38x smaller area and …

Neural Correlates Of Spectral, Temporal And Spectro-Temporal Modulation, Anusha Mohan Mar 2014

Neural Correlates Of Spectral, Temporal And Spectro-Temporal Modulation, Anusha Mohan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Natural sounds are characterized by the distribution of acoustic power over different frequency regions and/or time. This is termed spectral, temporal or spectro-temporal modulation. The auditory system is equipped with banks of filters tuned to different spectral, temporal and spectro-temporal modulation frequencies (SM, TM, STM). The sensitivity of the peripheral system to these modulations can be measured by undertaking a linear systems approach. In addition to understanding the psychophysical sensitivity, studying the neural patterns of their processing is also critical. The current study is an attempt to understand the relationship between the behavioral and neural correlates of spectral, temporal and …

Viologen Oxidation Properties, Adam Read, Dr. William Pitt Mar 2014

Viologen Oxidation Properties, Adam Read, Dr. William Pitt

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The world always stands in need of a more efficient and low cost energy sources. Fuel cells present an environmentally friendly source of energy that could potentially replace the current fossil fuels that are now used. In addition fuel cells are normally light weight and have the ability to work in isolated regions where power is not easily accessible. Fuel cells have shown great potential but as of yet are not an economically favorable energy source due to high cost. One of the main reasons for this is the high cost of platinum which is commonly used as a catalyst. …

Encapsulating Liposomes For Stabilized Drug Delivery, Corbin Jacobs, Dr. William Pitt Mar 2014

Encapsulating Liposomes For Stabilized Drug Delivery, Corbin Jacobs, Dr. William Pitt

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Liposomes are tiny vesicles composed of materials similar to a cell membrane’s bilayer and “are useful for delivering anticancer agents to tumors and reducing the severe side effects of the agents.”1 Following synthesis, liposomes containing drug are administered intravenously. Fortunately, tumors have hyperpermeable vasculature which facilitates liposomal accumulation by their leaking out of the capillaries surrounding the tumor.2 Once near the tumor, individual cells will endocytose or engulf the vesicles as long as they are between 10 nm and 1000 nm.3

A2 Protein Incorporation Into The Qβ Virus-Like Particle, Derek Bush, Dr. Band Bundy Mar 2014

A2 Protein Incorporation Into The Qβ Virus-Like Particle, Derek Bush, Dr. Band Bundy

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Virus-like Particles (VLPs) are noninfectious synthetic copies of the outer protein shell of viruses. They are highly symmetrical nanostructures that self-assemble from approximately 200 copies of a single “coat” protein. This symmetry makes attachment of singular foreign entities to the VLPs difficult, which limits their current uses in medical and engineering applications. In this research project we have worked to demonstrate the insertion of a single copy of the “A2” protein into the VLP from the Qβ bacteriophage to serve as a possible location for future site-specific VLP modification. Ultimately we believe that this work will lead to the development …

Submicron-Resolution Photoacoustic Microscopy Of Endogenous Light-Absorbing Biomolecules, Chi Zhang Mar 2014

Submicron-Resolution Photoacoustic Microscopy Of Endogenous Light-Absorbing Biomolecules, Chi Zhang

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Photoacoustic imaging in biomedicine has the unique advantage of probing endogenous light absorbers at various length scales with a 100% relative sensitivity. Among the several modalities of photoacoustic imaging, optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) can achieve high spatial resolution, on the order of optical wavelength, at <1 mm depth in biological tissue (the optical ballistic regime). OR-PAM has been applied successfully to structural and functional imaging of blood vasculature and red blood cells in vivo. Any molecules which absorb sufficient light at certain wavelengths can potentially be imaged by PAM. Compared with pure optical imaging, which typically targets fluorescent markers, label-free PAM avoids the major concerns that the fluorescent labeling probes may disturb the function of biomolecules and may have an insufficient density. This dissertation aims to advance label-free OR-PAM to the subcellular scale.

The first part of this dissertation describes the technological advancement of PAM yielding high spatial resolution in 3D. The lateral resolution was improved by using optical objectives with high numerical apertures for optical focusing. The axial resolution was improved by using broadband ultrasonic transducers for ultrasound detection. We achieved 220 nm lateral resolution in transmission …

AMC produces kinetically rapid conditions for increased rates of mineralization of CO2, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and mercury (Hg) on fly ash particles. Control and AMC reacted fly ash particles were investigated for: change in carbon (expressed …

Statistical And Prognostic Modeling Of Clinical Outcomes With Complex Physiologic Data, Monica A. Puertas Mar 2014

Statistical And Prognostic Modeling Of Clinical Outcomes With Complex Physiologic Data, Monica A. Puertas

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Laboratory tests are a primary resource for diagnosing patient diseases. However, physicians often make decisions based on a single laboratory result and have a limited perspective of the role of commonly-measured parameters in enhancing the diagnostic process. By providing a dynamic patient profile, the diagnosis could be more accurate and timely, allowing physicians to anticipate changes in the recovery trajectory and intervene more effectively.

The assessment and monitoring of the circulatory system is essential for patients in intensive care units (ICU). One component of this system is the platelet count, which is used in assessing blood clotting. However, platelet counts …

Lead (Pb) Contamination Of Water Drawn From Pitcher Pumps In Eastern Madagascar, David Bradlee Akers Mar 2014

Lead (Pb) Contamination Of Water Drawn From Pitcher Pumps In Eastern Madagascar, David Bradlee Akers

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Access to safe water supply--a major determinant of public health--is less than 50% in Madagascar, and access to piped, treated water remains out of reach financially for many in the urban and peri-urban areas where available. The Self-supply option of the Pitcher Pump has been meeting the need for household water in coastal areas of Madagascar since the early 1960s and has proven a sustainable option for many. These pumps make use of leaded components in the construction, however, which may pose a health risk for heavy metal intoxication and therefore cause the water to be unsafe for drinking and …

Tunable Hyperbolic Metamaterials Utilizing Phase Change Heterostructures, Harish N.S. Krishnamoorthy, You Zhou, Shriram Ramanathan, Evgenii Narimanov, Vinod M. Menon

Birck and NCN Publications

We present a metal-free tunable anisotropic metamaterial where the iso-frequency surface is tuned from elliptical to hyperbolic dispersion by exploiting the metal-insulator phase transition in the correlated material vanadium dioxide (VO2). Using VO2-TiO2 heterostructures, we demonstrate the transition in the effective dielectric constant parallel to the layers to undergo a sign change from positive to negative as the VO2 undergoes the phase transition. The possibility to tune the iso-frequency surface in real time using external perturbations such as temperature, voltage, or optical pulses creates new avenues for controlling light-matter interaction. Cfd Black Liquor Bed Simulation, Benjamin Ohran, Dr. Larry Baxter Mar 2014

Cfd Black Liquor Bed Simulation, Benjamin Ohran, Dr. Larry Baxter

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The objective of this project was to further the understanding of the bed region of a black liquor recovery boiler. The net output of carbon dioxide from burning black liquor (a paper pulping by-product) is zero, making it a desirable alternative fuel source; however, there are other problems associated with burning black liquor such as boiler fouling, and emissions of pollutants. With the understanding gained from this project it will be possible to further improve the efficiency and emissions of black liquor boilers, making it a more viable fuel alternative.

Identification Of Markov Process Within A Wind Turbine Array Boundary Layer, Matthew Scott Melius, Murat Tutkun, Raúl Bayoán Cal Mar 2014

Identification Of Markov Process Within A Wind Turbine Array Boundary Layer, Matthew Scott Melius, Murat Tutkun, Raúl Bayoán Cal

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Markovian properties within a wind turbine array boundary layer are explored for data taken in a wind tunnel containing a model wind turbine array. A stochastic analysis of the data is carried out using the mathematics of Markov processes. The data were obtained using hot-wire anemometry thus providing point velocity statistics. The theory of Markov process is applied to obtain a statistical description of longitudinal velocity increments inside the turbine wake. Comparison of two- and three-scale conditional probability density functions indicates the existence of Markovian properties in longitudinal velocity increments for scale differences larger than the Taylor microscale. This …

Sustainable Energy And Nutrient Recovery From Swine Waste, Adib Amini Mar 2014

Sustainable Energy And Nutrient Recovery From Swine Waste, Adib Amini

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Swine production represents approximately 40% of the world's meat production, and swine wastes contain high concentrations of organic matter, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Swine production is intensifying as meat demand increases and concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are becoming increasingly common, making it difficult to treat the waste generated. A system for holistic treatment of swine waste produced in CAFOs was investigated in this study that sustainably generates energy and recovers N and P as saleable fertilizers. The system uses anaerobic digestion (AD) for methane production and solids stabilization, followed by precipitation of struvite (MgNH4PO4*6H2O) and recovery of N …
