A Sensor Ontology For The Domain Of Firefighting Robots, Amy Renae Wagoner Apr 2014

A Sensor Ontology For The Domain Of Firefighting Robots, Amy Renae Wagoner

Open Access Theses

Fires create thousands of dollars in damage and thousands of deaths each year. Firefighters risk their lives everyday and are often killed in action. Firefighting robots may be able to reduce the loss of lives and damage due to fires. Robots are often used for redundant tasks that require the consistency and efficiency of a machine. They are especially optimal for tasks that require strength that exceeds that of a typical human being or for environments that are hazardous to people. Robots' metallic exteriors are far more durable and easier to replace than flesh and blood, thus they are ideal …

Effect Of Multivalent Ions On The Swelling And Mechanical Behavior Of Superabsorbent Polymers (Saps) For Mitigation Of Mortar Autogenous Shrinkage, Qian Zhu

Open Access Theses

The chemical and physical structure-property relationships of model superabsorbent polymer (SAP) hydrogels were characterized with respect to swelling behavior and mechanical properties in different ionic solutions (Na+ , Ca2+ , and Al3+ ). The model hydrogels were composed of poly(sodium acrylate-acrylamide) (PANa-PAM) copolymer with varying concentrations of PANa (0, 17, 33, 67, and 83 wt.%) and covalent crosslinking densities of 1, 1.5, and 2 wt.%. By synthesizing the hydrogels in-house, systems with independently tunable amounts of covalent crosslinking and anionic functional groups were created, allowing for the relative effects of covalent and ionic crosslinking on the properties of the hydrogels …

No And No2 Modeling For Diesel Oxidation Catalyst At Different Thermal Aging Levels, Keqin Zhou Apr 2014

No And No2 Modeling For Diesel Oxidation Catalyst At Different Thermal Aging Levels, Keqin Zhou

Open Access Theses

Different DOC modeling methods are analyzed and compared. Detailed reaction mechanisms of DOC reaction are discussed and a new NO and NO2 modeling technique is proposed. Experiments are conducted measuring downstream DOC NO and NOx . DOC out NO and NO2 concentrations are modeled as a function of DOC temperature. A robust model is built such that with the input of real time NOx and DOC temperature information, DOC-out NO and NO2 concentrations can be precisely predicted.

As is true with many catalysts, the DOC thermally ages as it operates, which reduces the thermal effectiveness level of the catalyst. This …

A Gpr-Gps-Gis-Integrated, Information-Rich And Error-Aware System For Detecting, Locating And Characterizing Underground Utilities, Shaui Li

Open Access Theses

Underground utilities have proliferated throughout the years. The location and dimension of many underground utilities have not always been properly collected and documented, leading to utility conflicts and utility strikes, and thus resulting in property damages, project delays, cost overruns, environment pollutions, injuries and deaths. The underlying reasons are twofold. First, the reliable data regarding the location and dimension of underground utility are missing or incomplete. Existing methods to collect data are not efficient and effective. Second, positional uncertainties are inherent in the measured utility locations. An effective means is not yet available to visualize and communicate the inherent positional …

Development Of A Spring-Based Automotive Starter, David H. Myszka, Jonathan Lauden, Patrick Joyce, Andrew P. Murray, Christoph Gillum

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Automotive starting systems require substantial amounts of mechanical energy in a short period of time. Lead-acid batteries have historically provided that energy through a starter motor. Springs have been identified as an alternative energy storage medium and are well suited to engine-starting applications due to their ability to rapidly deliver substantial mechanical power and their long service life. This paper presents the development of a conceptual, spring-based starter. The focus of the study was to determine whether a spring of acceptable size could provide the required torque and rotational speed to start an automotive engine. Engine testing was performed on …

Effect Of Co Adsorption And Coverage On Ethanol Production From Syngas, Anuradha Gundamaraju, Ming He, David A. Bruce

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

In the future, the availability of reliable alternative fuels will be crucial for any country to become energy independent. One such alternative is ethanol as it can be used both as a fuel and as a fuel additive. Most of the ethanol produced in the world today is derived from biomass. The biomass feedstocks and fermentation broths used in ethanol production both contain high amounts of water and therefore, the energy efficiency of the process is lessened by product separation processes (azeotropic separation of water and ethanol) that are non-trivial and highly inefficient (due to the evaporation of water). An …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Extractive Scintillating Resin For Ultra-Trace-Level Quantification Of Uranium In Aqueous Media, C Duval, V Bliznyuk, A Seliman, T Devol, S Husson

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

The detection and quantification of radionuclides in aqueous media is of interest to both the Environmental Protection Agency, for matters of public health, and international organizations like the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization, that use environmental samples to investigate claims of illicit nuclear activities. The current method of quantification involves batch style analytical techniques which utilize bulky instruments. Portable, flow cell detectors utilizing extractive scintillating resin with physically sorbed extractants and fluorophores have been developed; however, this resin shows poor long term stability as the active components leach from the resin over time. There is a need to develop chemically …

Effect Of Surface Parameters On Interfacial Water Film Behavior, Brittany Glatz, Luke Rhym, Sapna Sarupria

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

Vapor-to-liquid and liquid-to-solid transitions on mineral surfaces are the primary pathways for phase transitions in atmospheric water. These phase transitions affect the microphysics of clouds and have significant effects on the weather and climate. Our overall goal is to elucidate the mechanisms through which surfaces affect these transitions, and develop predictive abilities to correlate surface properties to the thermodynamics and kinetics of the phase transitions. In this work, we use molecular dynamics simulations to study the structure, and dynamics of water near kaolinite-like surfaces. Kaolinite is the most abundant mineral dust in the atmosphere. We specifically investigate the effect of …

In this study, unique heat treatment processing techniques coupled with innovation in elemental alloying produced distinctive magnesium (Mg) based alloy systems. The MgZnCa system was used as the underpinning system where four groups of novel alloys were …

Numerical Examination Of The Nonlinear Dynamics Of A Hybrid Acousto-Optic Bragg Cell With Positive Feedback Under Profiled Beam Propagation, Fares S. Almehmadi, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee Apr 2014

Numerical Examination Of The Nonlinear Dynamics Of A Hybrid Acousto-Optic Bragg Cell With Positive Feedback Under Profiled Beam Propagation, Fares S. Almehmadi, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In standard weak interaction theory, acousto-optic Bragg analysis typically assumes that the incident light and sound beams are uniform plane waves. Acousto-optic Bragg diffraction with nonuniform profiled input beams is numerically examined under open loop via a transfer function formalism. Unexpected deviations in the first-order diffracted beam from the standard theory are observed for high values. These deviations are significant because the corresponding closed-loop system is sensitive to input amplitudes and initial conditions, and the overall impact on the dynamical behavior has not been studied previously in standard analyses. To explore the effect of such nonuniform output profiles on …

Design Of A Uv Curing Cartridge For 3d Inkjet Printing, Richard Wiswell

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

In printing multi-layer electronic circuits, each layer must be formed as a continuous pattern in high resolution from ink jetted liquid droplets and be in precise alignment with the other layers, precluding substrate removal for UV curing. This research seeks to determine the optimal method for in-situ UV curing of the ink jetted material in a single pass. The inkjet replacement cartridge designed for this purpose was constructed of aluminum, fit into the printer head assembly in good alignment with the other ink cartridges, and contained a UV LED for in-situ curing and a cooling fan to maintain safe operating …

Avida Checkpoint/Restart Implementation, Nilab Mohammad Mousa

McNair Scholars Research Journal

As high performance computing centers (HPCC) continue to grow in popularity, issues of resource management and reliability are becoming limiting factors in scheduling long-running jobs. One of the factors is time. Efficacy of Avida, the platform of research for digital evolution, is limited by the allocated time available on HPCC. Saving the state of the software at a point and restarting the execution from the paused state will allow for better resource utilization, as well as help reduce restrictions that constrain the potential of the software. This research examines whether or not Berkeley Lab Checkpoint/Restart (BLCR) can be integrated with …
