Mammary Epithelial Cells Cultured Onto Non-Woven Nanofiber Electrospun Silk-Based Biomaterials To Engineer Breast Tissue Models, Yas Maghdouri-White

Theses and Dissertations

Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer affecting women in the world today. To better understand breast cancer initiation and progression modeling biological tissue under physiological conditions is essential. Indeed, breast cancer involves complex interactions between mammary epithelial cells and the stroma, both extracellular matrix (ECM) and cells including adipocytes (fat tissue) and fibroblasts (connective tissue). Therefore, the engineering of in vitro three-dimensional (3D) systems of breast tissues allows a deeper understanding of the complex cell-cell and cell-ECM interactions involved during breast tissue development and cancer initiation and progression. Furthermore, such 3D systems may provide a …

Effect Of Ionic Crosslinking On The Swelling And Mechanical Response Of Model Superabsorbent Polymer Hydrogels For Internally Cured Concrete, Qian Zhu, Christopher W. Barney, Kendra Erk Apr 2014

Effect Of Ionic Crosslinking On The Swelling And Mechanical Response Of Model Superabsorbent Polymer Hydrogels For Internally Cured Concrete, Qian Zhu, Christopher W. Barney, Kendra Erk

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The chemical and physical structure-property relationships of model superabsorbent polymer (SAP) hydrogels were characterized with respect to swelling behavior and mechanical properties in different ionic solutions (Na+, Ca2+, and Al3+). The model hydrogels were composed of poly(sodium acrylate-acrylamide) (PANa-PAM) copolymer with varying concentrations of PANa (0, 17, 33, 67, and 83 wt.%) and covalent crosslinking densities of 1, 1.5, and 2 wt.%. By synthesizing the hydrogels in-house, systems with independently tunable amounts of covalent crosslinking and anionic functional groups were created, allowing for the relative effects of covalent and ionic crosslinking on the properties of the hydrogels to be directly …

Droplet Evaporation On Heated Hydrophobic And Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Susmita Dash, Suresh V. Garimella Apr 2014

Droplet Evaporation On Heated Hydrophobic And Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Susmita Dash, Suresh V. Garimella

Birck and NCN Publications

The evaporation characteristics of sessile water droplets on smooth hydrophobic and structured superhydrophobic heated surfaces are experimentally investigated. Droplets placed on the hierarchical superhydrophobic surface subtend a very high contact angle (similar to 160 degrees) and demonstrate low roll-off angle (similar to 1 degrees), while the hydrophobic substrate supports corresponding values of 120 degrees and similar to 10 degrees. The substrates are heated to different constant temperatures in the range of 40-60 degrees C, which causes the droplet to evaporate much faster than in the case of natural evaporation without heating. The geometric parameters of the droplet, such as contact …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics in the spinal subarachnoid space (SSS) have been thought to play an important pathophysiological role in syringomyelia, Chiari I malformation (CM), and a role in intrathecal drug delivery. Yet, the impact that fine anatomical structures, including nerve roots and denticulate ligaments (NRDL), have on SSS CSF dynamics is not clear. In the present study we assessed the impact of NRDL on CSF dynamics in the cervical SSS. The 3D geometry of the cervical SSS was reconstructed based on manual segmentation of MRI images of a healthy volunteer and a patient with CM. Idealized NRDL were designed …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Flame-enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was investigated to improve the sensitivity of LIBS. It was realized by generating laser-induced plasmas in the blue outer envelope of a neutral oxy-acetylene flame. Fast imaging and temporally resolved spectroscopy of the plasmas were carried out. Enhanced intensity of up to 4 times and narrowed full width at half maximum (FWHM) down to 60% for emission lines were observed. Electron temperatures and densities were calculated to investigate the flame effects on plasma evolution. These calculated electron temperatures and densities showed that high-temperature and low-density plasmas were achieved before 4 μs in the flame environment, …

A 3-D Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model For Rectangular Cantilever Beams With An Arbitrary Force End-Load, Jairo Renato Chimento Apr 2014

A 3-D Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model For Rectangular Cantilever Beams With An Arbitrary Force End-Load, Jairo Renato Chimento

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation introduces a novel three-dimensional pseudo-rigid-body model (3-D PRBM) for straight cantilever beams with rectangular cross sections. The model is capable of capturing the behavior of the neutral axis of a beam loaded with an arbitrary force end-load. Numerical integration of a system of differential equations yields approximate displacement and orientation of the beam's neutral axis at the free end, and curvatures of the neutral axis at the fixed end. This data was used to develop the 3-D PRBM which consists of two torsional springs connecting two rigid links for a total of 2 degrees of freedom (DOF). The …

Modeling Replenishment Of Ultrathin Liquid Perfluoropolyether Z Films On Solid Surfaces Using Monte Carlo Simulation, M.S. Mayeed, T. Kato

Faculty Articles

Applying the reptation algorithm to a simplified perfluoropolyether Z off-lattice polymer model an NVT Monte Carlo simulation has been performed. Bulk condition has been simulated first to compare the average radius of gyration with the bulk experimental results. Then the model is tested for its ability to describe dynamics. After this, it is applied to observe the replenishment of nanoscale ultrathin liquid films on solid flat carbon surfaces. The replenishment rate for trenches of different widths (8, 12, and 16 nms for several molecular weights) between two films of perfluoropolyether Z from the Monte Carlo simulation is compared to that …

Variable-Cell Method For Stress-Controlled Jamming Of Athermal, Frictionless Grains, Kyle C. Smith, Ishan Srivastava, Timothy Fisher, Meheboob Alam Apr 2014

Variable-Cell Method For Stress-Controlled Jamming Of Athermal, Frictionless Grains, Kyle C. Smith, Ishan Srivastava, Timothy Fisher, Meheboob Alam

Birck and NCN Publications

A method is introduced to simulate jamming of polyhedral grains under controlled stress that incorporates global degrees of freedom through the metric tensor of a periodic cell containing grains. Jamming under hydrostatic (isotropic) stress and athermal conditions leads to a precise definition of the ideal jamming point at zero shear stress. The structures of tetrahedra jammed hydrostatically exhibit less translational order and lower jamming-point density than previously described maximally random jammed hard tetrahedra. Under the same conditions, cubes jam with negligible nematic order. Grains with octahedral symmetry having s > 0.5 (where s interpolates from octahedra [s = 0] to cubes …

Tuning And Optimization Of Silk Fibroin Gels For Biomedical Applications, Michael Marin Apr 2014

Tuning And Optimization Of Silk Fibroin Gels For Biomedical Applications, Michael Marin

Theses and Dissertations

Biocompatible and biodegradable porous materials based on silk fibroin (SF), a natural protein derived from the Bombyx mori silkworm, are being extensively investigated for use in biomedical applications including mammalian cell bioprocessing, tissue engineering, and drug delivery applications. In this work, low-pressure, gaseous CO2 is used as an acidifying agent to fabricate SF hydrogels. This low-pressure CO2 acidification method is compared to an acidification method using high-pressure CO2 to demonstrate the effect of CO2 mass transfer and pressure on SF sol-gel kinetics. The effect of SF molecular weight on the sol-gel kinetics is determined using the low-pressure CO2 method. The …

Simulation Of The Relaxation Potential Profile Of An Ac-Dc-Ac Test, Kerry N. Allahar, Michael F. Hurley, Erik D. Sapper, Darryl P. Butt

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The relaxation period of the accelerated ac-dc-ac test for coatings is associated with the transient electrochemistry that occurs when the immersed coated system is allowed to return to a stable open-circuit condition after being subjected to a cathodic potential. A mathematical model of the transient electrochemistry that occurs during this relaxation period is presented for coated aluminum. Expressions for the corrosion potential and corrosion current as functions of the local pH at the metal-coating interface were developed using reported experimental results. These expressions enabled the simulation of the transient electrochemistry under the constraint of balanced anodic and cathodic current densities. …

Eliminating Mutual Views In Fusion Of Ranging And Rgb-D Data From Robot Teams Operating In Confined Areas, Damian M. Lyons, Karma Shrestha Apr 2014

Eliminating Mutual Views In Fusion Of Ranging And Rgb-D Data From Robot Teams Operating In Confined Areas, Damian M. Lyons, Karma Shrestha

Faculty Publications

We address the problem of fusing laser and RGB-Data from multiple robots operating in close proximity to one another. By having a team of robots working together, a large area can be scanned quickly, or a smaller area scanned in greater detail. However, a key aspect of this problem is the elimination of the spurious readings due to the robots operating in close proximity. While there is an extensive literature on the mapping and localization aspect of this problem, our problem differs from the dynamic map problem in that it involves at one kind of transient map feature, robots viewing …

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

Across Africa and Asia, water resources are being affected by a complex mixture of social, economic, and environmental factors. These include climate change and population growth, food prices, oil prices, financial disruptions, and political fluctuations. The need to produce more food will have one of the largest impacts on water and will continue to reshape the patterns of agricultural water use in major food-growing regions. With this increasing demand on water for agriculture, from large-scale irrigation to intensification of rainfed systems, it is becoming increasingly important to ensure that water resources decision-making has access to information that captures the spectrum …

Shear Rheological Characterization Of Gel Healing Response And Construction Of Rheo-Piv System, Abhishek Deepak Bawiskar Apr 2014

Shear Rheological Characterization Of Gel Healing Response And Construction Of Rheo-Piv System, Abhishek Deepak Bawiskar

Open Access Theses

Thermo-reversible gels are solvent-filled 3D networks of polymer chains interconnected by physical (transient) crosslinks. On applying a high shear stress, the crosslinks are broken and these gels show a typical stress-strain behavior due to cohesive fracture of the gel. When heated above a critical temperature and cooled back to room temperature, all the crosslinks are re-formed. Interestingly, partial to full recovery of broken crosslinks is also observed by simply letting the gel stand at room temperature. In this study, the fracture and healing behavior of a model acrylic triblock copolymer gel has been characterized by shear rheometry. A mathematical model …

Phase Field Modeling Of Shear Yielding And Crazing In Glassy Polymer, Yunzhe Mao Apr 2014

Phase Field Modeling Of Shear Yielding And Crazing In Glassy Polymer, Yunzhe Mao

Open Access Theses

Glassy polymers are very important in industrial and commercial components manufacturing. For instance, it is used to manufacture polymer-matrix composites, the type of composite used in the Dreamliner 787. But this kind of material is also limited by its tendency to fail in brittle manner. In this study, we use phase field model to characterize the yielding condition of glassy amorphous polymer under a wide range of loading conditions. The main failure mechanisms in amorphous glassy polymers, such as poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA), are crazing and shear yielding. Crazing is formed because of the nucleation of micro-voids in the location of stress …

A Framework For Synthesizing Agent-Based Heterogeneous Population Model For Epidemic Simulation, Madih Sahar Apr 2014

A Framework For Synthesizing Agent-Based Heterogeneous Population Model For Epidemic Simulation, Madih Sahar

Open Access Theses

Social interactions play an important role in spread of a disease. In this thesis we propose a probabilistic approach to synthesize an agent-based heterogeneous population interaction model to study the spatio-temporal dynamics of an air-born epidemic, such as influenza, in a metropolitan area. The proposed methodology is generic in nature and can generate a baseline population for the cities for which detailed population summary tables are not available. The joint probabilities of population demographics are estimated using the International Public Use Microsimulation Data (IPUMS) sample data set. Based on the population density and the socio-economic status, the population is divided …
